Could of been so much! Control? What Control?

I saw this game linked as a FPS not a TPS(Third Person Shooter) and I had visions of Painkiller but with Zombies! What I got was... well OK at first and then of course I died 15 times and could not even get to the first cut scene... So no saving as well... The save system SUCKS! So here is my take on the basic Good, Bad and Ugly:

Good:
1. Lots of weapons to use!
2. Plenty of Zombie Action
3. Cut Scenes are great looking (HDTV that is)

Bad:
1. Save system... Or lack there of
2. Frustrating to no end when doors don't open when you stand in front of them like GTA. What's with that?
3. Load times can be long but this is a big game with big maps
4. Come on! 25 Zombies in a crowded hallway leading to a Save area? Reset to start! Ugh!
5. One save slot? Lame!
6. Lame Control System! You are looking at a crowd of Zombies coming at you... You switch to your gun... yea that will work! Wrong! You get eaten.. What happened? Your camera view happen to pivot the wrong way and you are aiming at.... NOTHING! By the time you turn around... crunch. Too late... Reset to start... Again!
7. Your cell phone rings... and rings... and rings...
8. Forget saving others... I can't even keep myself alive!

Ugly:
1. Saves.. Good Luck!, like you would even ask?
2. Aiming... Again Good Luck! You never know where you'll be pointing that weapon. Then your dead, again and again....
3. Text is very small even on HDTV (Try mine, 103" baby!)
4. Doors do not open (Sorry but had to repeat that)
5. Graphics (Not cut scenes) could be better for HD. Come on this is a 360 now...

Conclusion: I would have given the game 4 stars for fun except that with all of the bad and plain UGLY points it just takes them away because of the frustration factor. I want to have fun not get frustrated... I have been a gamer for what now... 23 years? And this was a big disappointment. by the way, the 103" HDTV is a projector/screen supporting 720P. Can't afford 70K for the new Panasonic 103" Plasma but then again who can?
Rent this first and if you can get past the bad and ugly, then enjoy. You know you've got a dud when you find yourself putting Call of Duty 2 back in for the 99th time because it's just sooooo much fun. Will someone ever come out with a decent 360 title? So far Call of Duty 2 is the only game that actually rocks the 360. Everything else is either like this title: "Could have been so much.... blah blah..." or just plane stupid...

A Good Game With Typical Capcom Flaws (also about the "Blurry Text")

First of all, I think that this is a very good game that could have been a great game with a better save system. You can read the other reviews to see why. Much like Devil May Cry 3, this is a very unforgiving game. If you mess up, prepare to spend 5-15 minutes running back through the level to get to where you were prior. Honestly, I don't know why developers still make games like this; it makes old fogeys with full-time jobs and responsibilities (like me) cry when I only have half an hour to play and have to spend it on the "run of shame" to the same boss fight I already lost. At least you can go out, "level up" Frank, and then save your game and start the story over but keep your new levels and moves. This can be very helpful, let me tell you. But even with the terrible save game system, Dead Rising is an excellent game that harkens back to George A. Romero's "Dead" films. If you're itching to kill hundreds and hundreds of zombies then I highly recommend this title.

If you don't care about the "blurry text" problem that people are experiencing, then please stop reading as the rest of this review is about this subject.

I noticed in a lot of reviews that people were not able to read the "blurry text" in the game on standard-definition televisions. I found this very interesting, because I have a standard definition television and the text, while small, was not blurry or impossible to read. And I think I've figured out why. The sad fact is that most people do not calibrate their televisions. The brightness is set too high and this causes the whites to wash out and "bleed" into adjacent areas. You can see this very well in any game that uses bright foreground objects against dark background objects or vice versa. Well, the Dead Rising text is so small that the "bleed" will make the text unreadable. I tested this theory and sure enough, when I turned up my television brightness past a certain point I could not read the text. So if you are experiencing blurry, unreadable text I suggest that you please try turning down the brightness (sometimes called the "picture") on your television. 90 percent of televisions sold today are shipped out with cruddy, overbright pictures and inaccurate colors in order to make them "stand out" on the showroom floor. However the picture quality suffers and this is a perfect example of it.

Sorry to spend over half the review on the blurry text issue, but it's a shame that some people are not able to play this game for such a minor issue.

Fun but the save system sucks

My only major gripe with Dead Rising is the save system used in the game. There is only one save slot and no auto save feature. My advice when playing the game is to find out where the game save spots are and save your game often. Maybe it's just me but I got pretty frustrated when my character would die and without an auto save feature I was left starting the game over from the beginning. The game is a bit on the short side also. Overall the game is fun the graphics are pretty good especially considering the amount of zombies that are on the screen at one time. Rent or borrow before you buy.

killing zombies with a bunch of stuff.. how could you screw that up, right?

oh boy. dead rising.... this game looks so fun, doesn't it? going around in a mall killing a bunch of zombies, it's a no-brainer. the problem is in the execution. the game starts off great, with you flying into a city that's been overtaken by zombies. you're a photojournalist and just want to cover the story. but you wind up having to fight off the zombies. very cool, and the way they do objects here is a great idea. you can pick up, say, a soccer ball which awesomely bounces off multiple zombies, injuring them. or break a potted plant over that zombie's head. the problem is, as fun as it sounds, it just isn't fun when you actually do it. for one thing, you have to go into an aim mode to use a gun or throw something. this would be OK except instead of fluidly going into aim mode in the direction you're facing (like a good game would have you do), you seem to move slightly to the left and then have to move your controller around to find the enemy again. unforgivable!!!

as far as the graphics, they're very nice. however, the text on the screen is very small. this might not be a problem if you have a newer TV with good clarity. mine is older and i had to get close to the TV to read the text. which brings me to the next issue with dead rising... it has a bunch of stories and quests and stuff. to me, this doesn't make much sense. if i wanted stories and quests, i could have played Oblivion. it's obvious they should have done quests in a simplified manner, by pointing out where to go on the map with an arrow and having you fight through zombies to get there. that would have provided simple honest fun. instead, they give you like a quest journal and a freakin' map!! i don't want to press an extra button to follow a map around in a game like this. they should leave the maps to silent hill or world of warcraft.

another thing - they have voice acting in the cutscenes, and then when you start playing, the characters only talk in text. HUH?! this is 2007, this is the powerful 360, and you're telling me we're still using TEXT instead of VOICE?! it screams "this was a rushed game."

there are too many complications to getting into the zombie-killing fun. if they had simplified this game and improved the controls, i would have liked it. but i got bored before 30 minutes of gameplay.

oh yeah, how could i forget the save system!!! as you can see, everyone hates the save system, and for good reason. i'm not the kind of person who has to save whenever i want, but in place of that i at least want a good checkpoint auto-saving feature. instead, when you die here, you have to go way back before the part you were playing, to the dialogue etc. before it. that is really annoying to me. every other game out there has a good checkpoint auto-save system but this one. again, it screams "this game was rushed."

Dead Rising is DOA.

I can't understand how such a cool concept for a game, with such great graphics, and from a first rate game developer by the name of Capcom is so utterly bland, and frustrating.

When I first learned you could help survivors in the mall escape the zombies, I thought it would be cool. I was wrong. The survivors you help escort from one area to the next are completely useless, and do everything in their power to get themselves killed. If anyone has ever played the Resident Evil Outbreak games(single player not online) and remembers the horrible AI of the group your in....well Dead Rising is like that, only worse.

I played Dead Rising on my 27" Sony Vega TV which is not High definition. The text that comes up when you talk to people in the game is simply unreadable. I was able to decipher some of the words by squinting and getting real close to my tv to read it, but if I play the game from 4 feet away, the words are so small it causes serious eyestrain to try to make the words out. The words are so small in the game I almost laughed, until I realized this isn't a joke, and you can't change the text size in the options. This alone is a great reason to avoid the game like the plauge.

The sad thing is, this game will probably sell may units, just because it's a new 360 title, and it doesn't deserve a purchase, IMO it's not even worth renting.
I was really looking forward to this release, and I have to say I have never been this disappointed with a video game. I will trade this title in soon to get the most credit for it, and find a video game that is worth my time.

Best Zombie game since Resident Evil 4

I love zombie movies and I love zombie games and this is awesome. It is pretty much Dawn of the Dead, but I guess they didn't have the license.

I never got tired of finding new ways to kill zombies and the replay value is high. I actually restarted the games 3 times just to do things better and quicker once I got the hang of it.

This is the first 360 game I haven't sold back to buy a new one. I will keep this gem.

This game is AWESOME!

Okay, first you can totally believe the hype that surrounds this game!
If you like horror based games (RE, AITD, etc...) this is a great game for you, but even if you don't like horror games, you will find plenty to challenge and thrill yourself with while playing through this game.
The mall and surrounding area that you can explore is huge, which is where it seems games are going (Huge maps, lots to explore, tons of enemies, hundreds of weapons - we've seen it before, but not quite like this).
The battle axe, shotgun, chainsaws, and katana are the best weapons in the game. I also like the idea of being a journalist and having to take pictures. It's fun to look back at the the photos and reflect on things that you did in the game that you snapped pictures of. I love this concept, but sometimes I get so into what I'm doing I forget to snap pictures.
It would be interesting to see other games using the journalist/camera/take pictures idea.
Maybe a crime scene investigator or something like that. Imagine a creepier version of Seven (the movie) in a video game, that would rock!
I've even read online that if you kill the population of this town (53,000-ish) you unlock a tank!
I'm almost through the game, and I've spent plenty of time killing zombies, but I'm barely hitting the 4,000 mark.
(!)
To kill 53,000 would take a while and probably be boring to accomplish, but hey, you do get a frickin tank!
The replay value is extremely high, alternate endings, different outcomes, unlockables, etc... (Thanks Capcom!)
There are missions and survivors to rescue, but there's also tons of fun areas to explore and plenty of time to fart around the mall.
Walking between stores and dressing your character as a child or a woman is fun at first, but once this game grips you, you'll forget about shopping and you'll get locked into an addictive game that you'll be thinking about and planning what to do next, even when you're not playing it.
I've caught myself at work thinking about where to go, who to rescue, etc...
Also, if you're a horror fan like me (I love the Romero movies, and zombie movies in general), you'll find yourself getting hooked from the start, with plenty of surprises around the corners.
I've noticed that during intense sequences, my heartrate goes up, my hands get sweaty, and sometimes I found myself standing in the middle of a sea of zombies armed with only one baseball bat, when it finally breaks and there's nothing around the immediate area to defend yourself with, I usually started running and squirming like a little school girl to get away from the zombies, fleeing to a nearby sporting good store for a fresh baseball bat or the nickknack shop for a sword or axe.
Once I'm armed again, it's back to slaying zombies. FUN!
Great game!
I also like the idea of using time and having to check your wristwatch, it kind of drives the whole game and makes you have to hurry to the next area or safe zone to see what happens next. Great concept!
You won't be let down, it's fun, addictive, and best of all creepy.
YES, thank you Capcom, may I have another?
Bring on the horror games and more zombies please!
RE5 is going to be so awesome, I can't wait!
Dead Rising is simply an amazing game!
Worth every penny of $60.
But it now, you can thank me and Capcom later...

Save your money!!!

Don't get me wrong...I love the thought of a zombie game for XBOX 360 but I have to say that I was disappointed with this one. The graphics are outdated and you can't read the text in the game itself. I couldn't believe it. Trust me ya'll skip this one and keep your money in your pocket. I suppose I give more power to those that love it...old schoolers! LOL!

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!!!

Great premise, terrible execution. Text in game is WAY too small to read. Sucks all of the enjoyment out of playing. Avoid this game and save your money!

MUST. KILL. ZOMBIES...

What is it with Capcom and zombies? First Resi and then this: except this time out we have a in-no-way-mimicking-THAT-famous-mall-based zombie film game, with thousands of zombies intent on killing you and some other hapless human survivors. Actually, this is nothing like Resi: there's no "find object A and then insert it into socket W which in turns opens door H to give you passage B..." hokum. With Dead Rising, you can stand around whilst watching the zombies stagger around, or play the good samaritan and rescue everyone, or try to solve the various cases that come your way...or any combination of the three.

THINGS I LIKE ABOUT THIS GAME.
-The zombies. They're the real star of the game. There's thousands of them. The screen oozes zombies. And because, like proper zombies, they move so slowly, there's no slowdown of the image. Neat little touches abound: some push shopping carts around, some stagger around like your drunk dad at a BBQ, some groan and mumble...they're like psychotic playmates in a giant fairground.
-Pictures. as your character, frank, is a photographer, he gets to take loads of snaps of what's going on. So, you can earn points by shooting gory goings on, humourous scenes (such as zombies wandering around with buckets stuck oin their heads), even some smut (if you're that way inclined. Photo opportunities present themselves with a little yellow sign over the heads of survivors: be quick on the trigger and you earn mega points. Best of all, you can take the choice of either saving the survivors that accompany you when they are attacked...or simply stand back and take loads of tasty snaps of their suffer-filled final moments. Great touch.
-There is a 72 hour time limit in the game. Three days in which to solve the mysteries of the zombies arrival. Start the game agian, and you can follow a different strand of the story, or choose a new story altogether.
-Great detail. Humourous shop names, lots of detail in the shop layouts; well-realised backgrounds, although they have the Capcom pre-rendered hallmark. There are criticisms of the small text, especially with non-HD TV.. To this I'd say: get a bigger TV, or an eye test. I've had no problems so far with my 32in. conventional TV.

THINGS I DON'T LIKE ABOUT THIS GAME.
-It's very difficult to follow more than one story at a time and rescue the survivors. It's frustrating to see the time allowed to solve one case drip away whilst trying to rescue some screaming civilian.
-Which brings me to that old favourite NPC AI. Like in so many other games, the AI is rubbish. Call a survivor you are trying to rescue over to you, and they somehow manage to stumble into the clutches of the one straggling zombie dude who happens to be wandering in their way. Instead of running from zombies, they also seem intent on picking fights with the very biggest mobs of zombies, who in no time swarm around the survivor. It's generally at this point that I abandon them. this is a big drawback to the game, but these kinds of problems are hardly new in games, are they?

Overall, a fine game, let down by poor NPC AI
