Now as a disclaimer I must say a few words about Star Wars games and Lucas Arts in general. Not since "Rescue on Fractulus" for the Commodore 64 has Lucas Arts produced a play-worthy game. George Lucas is to gaming like Pablo Picasso is to dinner napkins. Rebel Assault (parts I and II) both kept me from holding a normal, healthy relationship with anyone or even maintaining any semblance of self control. I shuffled around like a 90 year old geezer for 7 months after sitting through all 14 hours of gameplay combined (hey, impressive Lucas...14 hours (probably the same amount of time Lucas had to cut from his last film full of Jar Jar-isms "Meesa box of chocolates" and what he felt to be those Jar Jar for the academy award moments "Meesa tinkin dis be da startin of dee bootifu fwiendship". I'm just surprised anything Lucas has touched since 1995 doesn't have Jar Jar Binks winking at me in every game, tripping over stuff with a little "Go boom-boom!" action. Let's not mention "Masters of Teras Kasi" Was it just me...or did Darth Vader look like "Granny Vader" doing the bed-pan shuffle over to a "Chewbacca" character more to the likeness of Harry and the Hendersons...let's all have a moment of silence for that Lucas stamped and approved piece of rot. Oh, oh, oh and then 'The Phantom Menace" "RPG"? Pfft...I tell you that game induced absolutely no enjoyment and to this day I feel fortunate to have walked away from that one suffering only from mild dizziness (controls were nightmarish) and vomiting (voice acting was worse, I had to check the back of my control book 'yes, I bought the game and I'm sorry' to make sure Sean Connery wasn't reading for Cal Gon--oh, I mean Qui Gon Jinn) I'm getting so angry just thinking about it I can't even type any further.....OK I'm back. This brings us to Jedi Power Battles (which I did give 4 stars) This game does to a decent degree establish the feeling that, "Yes, you are a jedi" and more importantly, "Yes, that IS a lightsaber in your hand, not some teras kasi glow stick" You run, jump and attack with possibly the best control Lucas has ever, ever achieved. I keep referring to Lucas directly, but there is no way he could have been that involved. "Mr. Lucas...sir, we--we have the prototype up and running for when you'd like to see it" Lucas: "Let me see...hmm, mmm, hmmmmm...First of all, why isn't Jar Jar on the cover, and why isn't everyone in the game stooped over like a gorilla, fudge up the graphics a little more...I can still tell what most everything is supposed to be in this game, have Obi Wan run like a moron, and hell..dress some monkeys up like people and send them to my office for a meeting...have my seceratary send in cookies and punch. And for heaven's sake..put Binks on the Jedi council and give him a saber!" You know what I mean? Lucas is a dink that stumbled on to a great idea back in the seventies and has beat on it like a Ton-Ton. I really, really think the game is good though. Worth addding to your library for any Star Wars fans out there. My only problem with this game is the fact that if you are supposed to be a Jedi...what's with all the hacking and chopping up of the innocent? Don't get me wrong, there is a great deal of joy one can evoke from bopping Anakin over he head over and over and over again but isn't there some Jedi Code of Honor...or did that get thrown out with the good version of the script for the Phantom Menace?

Don't waste you money on this turkey

First off, I love Star Wars. I loved Episode One. I Loved Episode One Racer. I hated Jedi Power Battles. The creators of this game had such a great concept and idea for this game, but in the end it suffered the fate that so many movie to video game ports do... what to do between the events of the movie. 9 times out of 10 the answer is to fill space with inane Super Mario Brothers running and jumping.

In this game you're a Jedi Knight! You have a lightsaber! But for some reason you can't manage to go near the edge of a platform, without losing your balance and falling to a grisly death. Lame. The programmers concentrated too much on ridiculous ways of killing a Jedi, and not enough on cool ways to kill a Jedi. Î'll admit the music and sound is great. The characters look great holding their lightsabers, but for pete's sake these are Jedi Knights, the most legendary warriors in the galaxy, they gotta have more than 3 moves! Also, the film versions of the lightsabers pretty much went through those droids like butter, what's up with having to smack them 7 or 8 times to kill them. I think a more interesting approach would be to increase the quantity of the droids attacking, rather than how many whacks it takes to kill each one. The Jedi don't have enough fluidity in their attacks. There are long awkward pauses between each strike, wheras a real Jedi should be carving a swath of destruction through dozens of these droids with little effort.

Most of the graphics are poor. Much has been said about the lack of depth cues for those ridiculous jumps. Second that.

The control is just sad. You can't change direction without your character having to do a wide 180º, this causes much difficulty when trying to climb trees by hopping on (cripes) giant toadstools (this is Super Mario!). The aforementioned lack of combo movement and attack style are also upsetting.

There are a few saving graces, playing cooperatively with a friend is cool. It adds a little excitement and feeling of teamwork, one guy backs you up while you run in and waste the droids. The first few times that you deflect a blast right back down the attackers throat you'll be thoroughly impressed with yourself. This looks and feels great. And the CG at the opening is pretty well done also.

Overall, I'd reccomend you rent, not buy this one. Or even better yet just play it with someone who was unfortunate enough to buy this, thus avoiding dropping any money on this waste.

i rented this game becasue i am a big star wars fan and i have also played the many other lucus-arts games. i found out with in 5 min this game would be lame as heck the graphics "big" surprize were lame and the game play and story line are identical to that of "star wars phatom menace" excpet that you are a jedi and you have a light saber o what joy i thought instead of shooting robots i get to cut them in half!

to sum it up this game was extremly boring from the start the only way i'd buy this game is if i had NOT seen the movie and had not played phantom menace

Brilliant!

Any Padawan who loves light-sabre swinging will love this title.
It has many many special moves and combinations that evolve as you make your way through several cool scenarios mastering the ways of the Force. Try bouncing blasters....it's the coolest!

I agree with Blah. I had looked forward to another Episode I game, but I was disapointed. I liked the ability to change my character ( when I was allowed), and I liked being able to play with another Jedi. But the Jedi Power Battles did not have the same thought, detail and contol as found in the first Phamton Menence game. If the next Episode I game is like the Jedi Power Battles, I would strongly advise anyone to rent the game first so as not to be disapointed. Maybe the lack of sales of the next game will put the programer / designers back on track. Programers take note: look at the first Phamtom Menence game and put BACK the game's contol of the characters, put back the background detail, put back the interaction between the characters and also put back the ability to save the game at different places. Also, the cheap 'Donkey Kong' sound effects are out of place in a Starwar's game - get rid of them. Please improve the next game as I really do like playing the Starwars game series. The ability to change the story by having the possibility of saving Qui - Gon would be fun!

This is the only best StarWars game for the Playstation! It is very smooth and follows the movie very well. The SOUND EFFECTS are AWESOME and also the MUSIC. The control is okay, jumping is a little tricky, other-wise a great game.

After several disappointing star wars titles for the PSX, LucasArts finally comes through with Jedi Power Battles. I really like the fact that it plays like an old SNES game. The only bad point of this game is some of the controls. Sometimes it is hard to judge where you should jump. I would say the highlight is deflecting the shots with the lightsaber. This never seems to get old. All in all a good game, despite the controls. Recommended.
