Best Adventure game played Since The Longest Journey

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 8
Date: July 02, 2006
Author: Amazon User

This is definitely the best adventure game i had played since 1999's The Longest Journey. It is a real story telling and exploring game. The best part of this game (and what makes it great) is its engaging story that make you have the feelings you get from an intense and heartpounding movie. It's a must have. If you can (better say you should), buy the first game too, The Longest Journey, which is one of the greatest games ever made. Play TLJ first, and it will increase even more the great experience you get From Dreamfall.

This game is going to have a sequel where the history will be finished. This was said by it's autor and director Ragnar Tornquist on his web page.

This game is very flexible too, i installed it on my laptop which only have a 32MB ATI Raedon 9000 and runs ok at 600 X 800 setting and normal details. The gameplay was not affected on this settings.

Best game I've ever watched

I've played the previous games in this set and enjoyed them. However, this game is not a game you play, so much as a game you WATCH. If I ever have a bunch of time to waste again, I am going to total how much time is spent watching this movie, uh, I mean game, and how much you actually DO something. Waaaaay too much diaglogue.

I agree with some other gamers that the controls are bad at best and hard to get use to. Fighting was something I came to dread, it was so awful to manipulate your character. I usually had to fight each bad guy at least twice before I survived the ridiculousness of it all.

On the plus side, the visuals, music and voice-acting are really wonderful. The story line is OK and the few puzzles in the game are easy to a little-bit-harder-than-easy.

A fun time waster, in all.

Good Sequel with a few buts

It leaves you in the lurch as far as endings. Definitely the middle of a trilogy. Worth having on its own despite that failing. Some of the puzzles are annoying instead of clever. The imagery is as good as the last one. The one thing I dislike about this game is that, unlike the first game (The Longest Journey), you can die and have to revert to a saved game. I'd still recommend it if you have the first game.

Confusing but Good

This is the second game in a series, and even though I never played the first one, I was intrigued when I saw this game.

I thought that the graphics were very good, and the concept is interesting. The only complaint I have is that the controls are sometimes hard to use, and require a long time to get used to them.

I appreciated the length of the game; I find that too many PC games are over before they really begin.

I also enjoyed the character shift in the game. You get a chance to play as each of the main characters, which I thought was cool, and I liked seeing the multiple worlds the story takes place in.

Overall, I liked the game and would recommened it to anyone looking for a good role-playing game.

Dreamfall will change The Longest Journey forever

Before you buy this game, I highly suggest that you download the demo (Google it)! It's 2 GB, but it's well-worth finding out whether you like the controls, the graphics, and the gameplay overall. It's also a good test to see whether your computer works with it. This is a suggestion you should follow before you buy any computer game because it's more than likely that they have a demo for it.

Technical Problems: The installation is rather lengthy and involves you having to switch between all 6 discs before the installation is complete. This isn't really a big deal, but it can be inconvenient for some. Also, if you have a nVidia GeForce 6200, 7300, or 7400, you are most likely going to an encounter a horrible displaying error when you first start the game (images do not display correctly). If you are part of the 7000 series, there is a patch for this (search for it online). If not, go to the directory where you installed the game and open prefs.dat with Notepad. Then change "fullscreen 1" to "fullscreen 0". This will force the game to run in a window. You can also specify the height and width of the window, so it can almost be like a fullscreen. Other than, there are no other technical problems.

Gameplay: The overall feel of the game is very different from the original Longest Journey. As a person who is somewhat experienced with FPS games etc., I enjoy the new 3D motion rather than point-and-click. Even so, as many others have mentioned, navigation takes some getting used to and cannot help but be a little bit unsmooth in comparison to other 3D motion games. It may help to go to Settings and change the mouse sensitivity etc. to match your natural mouse movement. Dreamfall also includes a few fighting scenes, which are not at all present in Longest Journey, and it does add a little bit of excitement, but the fighting is very clumsy--when you press an attack or defense button, it seems to take forever to register, therefore resulting in very slow fighting. Aside from that, the types of puzzles in Dreamfall are rather similar to Longest Journey, except they involve more action, movement, and quick-thinking. In fact, you can die in Dreamfall (though you can load a recently saved game, but that does involve a lot of periodic saving), whereas in Longest Journey, you could not. This makes the game a lot more stressful, but also challenging. Some example tasks in the game include:

- Sneak and hide to avoid lethal robots and bodyguards.
- Match symbols to unlock things.
- Get into a room or an area unnoticed.
- Find people or items.
- Fight an enemy.

It should be noted that whenever you walk from one section of a world to another, which is rather often in your tasks, a black loading screen that says "Dreamfall" comes onto the screen for about 3 seconds. This is a little bit annoying, but not a major problem.

Dialogue/Cinematic Scenes/Graphics/Soundtrack: Just as in the Longest Journey, voice acting is superb and dialogue is well-written. It's also interesting to see the different reactions you get when you make different choices in what you tell Zoe to say (though this does not affect the storyline significantly). However, it can be lengthy (though perhaps more interesting than in Longest Journey), but you can skip through each line using the spacebar, as to not waste time. On the other hand, there are A LOT of cinematic "movie-like" animations. Though these scenes are truly amazing in terms of graphics (which are absolutely breathtaking in Dreamfall) and cinematography (these people are seriously movie makers rather than game makers), they can be lengthy or cumbersome, especially if you're watching it a second time around because you died or something. Usually, you can skip these scenes with the spacebar too, but towards the very end of the game, where there's a lot of animation, you can't skip through it. :( Another thing worth mentioning is the soundtrack, which is so amazing and perfect for the scenes that I almost want to buy it if it were available by itself.

Storyline: I don't know why some people seem to think otherwise, but Dreamfall's storyline GREATLY surpasses The Longest Journey's. To be honest, The Longest Journey's storyline wasn't really all that unique or different--it just felt like another fantasy book, describing "The Chosen One's" journey. However, in Dreamfall, the storyline is much more complicated and interesting. The storyline immediately starts off with a very puzzling mystery, keeping players intrigued the entire game, whereas in the Longest Journey, the story seemed to take FOREVER to get to the really good parts. Unfortunately, Dreamfall keeps players in suspense even until the very last second of the game. The cliffhanger is a huge disappointment and almost nothing seems solved or answered. What's worse is that the next sequel is barely in pre-production! It'll be another few long years before the next one comes out. The unsatisfying ending is the ONLY reason why I would say, "Maybe hold off on buying the game for another year or so." (If you want to find out more about the sequel to Dreamfall, check Dreamfall Chapters on Wikipedia or Google, but there's not much information yet).

Atmosphere/Mood: As mentioned before, Dreamfall has a lot more stress and anxiety in the gameplay than the Longest Journey. That, in combination with the storyline (which is good, but also depressing), gives Dreamfall a dark and somber feeling, whereas in the Longest Journey, it felt a lot more optimistic and happy. All of the characters seem to have lost hope and inspiration--everyone is disillusioned, which makes players feel the same. Essentially, Dreamfall will change your view of The Longest Journey storyline significantly--after you've played it, there's no going back.

OVERVIEW

Strong points: Graphics, soundtrack, artistic cinematography, dialogue, storyline, most of the gameplay.

Needs work: Sometimes the "movie" element surpasses the "game" element, though not so significantly that I don't think it's a fantastic game. The cliffhanger is seriously the biggest disappointment. Fighting and navigation is too clumsy and unsmooth. The loading screen is annoying. Technical problems need to be fixed and/or addressed.

My opinion: It's definitely worth the money for everything it offers and it's certainly one of the best adventure games I have ever played. If you're into The Longest Journey or are at least somewhat interested, I definitely recommend that you play this game at some point. However, it's up to you to decide if you can deal with the cliffhanger and keep in mind that it WILL change how you see and feel about The Longest Journey forever.

And please note that there is also the "Game of the Year Edition," which includes The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, and the Dreamfall soundtrack for only $24.99--this is the best buy for gamers who have not played The Longest Journey or Dreamfall yet.

EXTRA TIPS FOR GAMEPLAY

* Hints: Check out the Universal Hints website (Google for it).

* Press spacebar to skip through dialogue and animated scenes.

* Wait for the credits to end of the game and you will see an interesting movie clip that relates to the story, though isn't 100% essential to it.

* Go to Wikipedia after finishing the game to read about interesting plot holes, storyline predictions, and facts.

Was waiting so long for this game to come out and it's finally available ! The final product is different from what I expected having played the prequel: The Longest Journey. But different is also good, and maybe even better !

Pros:
* Mindblowing storyline
* Incredible soundtrack and voice-acting
* Excellent visuals
* Great controls (using a gamepad)

Cons:
* Multiple loading screens for each location (luckily waiting time is only a matter of seconds)
* Some puzzles are rather easy
* Simplified combat scenes

A State of Idioticy

I think this is one of the worst adventure games I have ever played.

- Here in this site there are alot of idiotic reviews mention about the unique, creative and wonderful and etc. etc.. story. Especially the one that appears on the top of the reviews Foolishness!! This is a complately non creative - rip off - story full of HQ clichees and some banal romantism so you may be impressed only if you're a pre-teen or a quite low-intelligent adult female (or male)

- camera view and controls are abysmal !!
- gameplay (actually there is no gameplay) is terribly dull, repetetive and boring
- the score is limited repetetive and played by a fake orchestra, the pop songs are some crapy dawson's creek populism.
- graphics are simply OUTDATED areas are limited character and face animations are pathetic, some fools who dont have any clue about todays standarts call this game stunning, and I say Bull S!!! even HL2 or Oblivion cannot be called stunning
- and the way too short: 10 hours. And finally after 10 hours of non sense THERE IS NO ENDING!!!

TLJ was great, this game is an overblown crap. Some call it state of art and I lough with my a.. The real interactive movie-game if you are looking for one is probably The Indigo Prophecy

Dreamfall: The talking can drive you to sleep

I will start with the postive. The graphics are ok. and the story up to a point is ok. Unfortunately thats the nice things out the way. Onto the talking, oh my sweet potatoes,' it twice made me fall asleep and I found myself wishing that someone would kill off the characters because they just wouldn't shut up and let ME play the so called 'Role Playing' game that I paid good money for. There were a few puzzles that you have to de-code, as it were, along the way, but my [...] could have done it with one hand tied behind her back and singing the german national anthem in greek. The voices were so bad, Mike Yarwood would look good next to them and as for humour, think of the worst comedian you have ever seen, times that by three and then eat a bowl of maggots to enlargen the situation, thats how funny it was. This whole 'game,' if thats what it was, which is very debatable, reminded me of a story being narrated by a little known actor onto a disc and being read to you like you were a child, the only thing that says it isn't is the 16 age group stamp on the box cover. 16 AGE GROUP, it had some kissing and a couple of bad words, WOW! In this day and age kids know more than I do, it could have been a 7 age group. I sum up the game like this, I feel that the makers came up with a great idea for a game, they started it and spend hours pondering over the graphics and then, all the money went, like Brittany Spears virginity overnight, but by this time the game had to be made and they carried on, little money was spend on the fighting parts, which was dreadful, little money was spend on the actors voices, if of course they were actors', my granny has a better voice than these ones and shes 92, no money at all was spent on the ending, which is just dire, to a point where after spending at least, ooh lets say four hours playing the game, YES it was that short, I just wanted to put a hammer to the disc, it actually took longer to load the game to my hard drive, than to play it, ok so thats NOT really true, but it felt like it, but back to the ending, I reckon that even the makers got bored and decided to end it before one of them died of boredom. It ended very badly and I hope that they don't make another one, because I would rather have my eyelids pulled off and stuck up my rectum than play this game again, or another of its 'brother' products. All in all, I wouldn't have brought this game if I could turn the clock back. If you have any sense, unless of course, you are in a DREAMFALL world already and they have already got you, RUN and don't look back!

Game Controls ruin this gaming experience

I was so excited to play this game. While I think the storyline is good and the graphics awesome, the awkwardness of the controls makes this game a chore. I can't count how many times my character has gotten killed because I couldn't smoothly navigate out of danger's way. This control clunkiness has kept me stuck in certain sections of the games for hours (if not days because I've had to "walk away"). On two occasions already (I'm only half way through the game), it's taken me 10 plus minutes to get up a staircase. Ridiculous. Several times now, I've considered abandoning Dreamfall because of the frustration factor. Don't buy unless you have a gamebox or the equivalent or a joystick for PC.

Not really a game, more of a fairytale

As with the rest of the reviews, I'll note that the gameplay itself was dreadful. The setup with keys and mouse was very difficult to control and counterintuitive but, once you got used to it, wasn't really a gamebreaker for me. There isn't a gamebreaker really, though perhaps something comes close.

The greatest strength and grandest flaw in the game is the plot. It is the former because the writing truly is fantastic and the voicing is superb. Towards the end you really do feel like you have a stake in the various characters and their respective fates. It is the latter because at the end, without giving anything away, there is very little resolution to the story. When the credits started rolling I was crestfallen, it was difficult to believe the game was over because there were more questions than at the beginning and frustratingly few answers. Grrr.

As someone blessed/cursed with an abysmally short memory I will probably forget my disappointment quickly and remember the wonder I felt throughout many portions of this movie. And that is what this is, it barely qualifies as a video game as it is more of an interactive film. Frankly, the tale spun here is light years better than the vast majority of films being produced by the movie industry; though, admittedly, that's not saying much.

Conclusion: PLAY the game BUUUUTTTTT be prepared for massive disappointment perhaps tinged with mouse hurling rage at the "conclusion".
