Multiplayer is a BLAST!!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

Don't believe the "con" above that says the multiplayer game is not satisfying. I'm here to tell you that it is an absolute, heart-pumping, blast!

The CD came with Interplay's MPlayer setup, but GameSpy has since acquired all of the MPlayer functions. After downloading GameSpy (which is a top-notch multiplayer client, IMHO) and getting everything set up (relatively painless) I've practically become addicted to the online game.

You will find people you like playing with and people you don't, as with any game. But the game itself (especially the "capture the flag"-type game is a totally rewarding experience. In the games where you find yourself outnumbered, say 4 to 1, you start to feel like Rambo... You start to analyze the terrain, looking for ambush spots, laying out homing mines, etc. I can't even begin to do justice to the excitement of the multiplayer game.

JUST GET IT AND GET ONLINE! ;-)

Game that doesn't take itself seriously, but very addictive!

In the spirit of Mario Brothers and Donkey Kong spin-offs, Interplay has released a very entertaining title that gives you a cartoon-like feel. Even with that feeling, you can't set this game down. It's one of those games with an amazingly simple concept that still gives you weeks of fun. And don't expect amateur graphics when I describe the cartoon atmosphere, the colors are brighter (which is different than most games today) but still stand on their own merit.

My best comparison would be the PC Games Black & White and Rainbow Six meet each other. The scenarios & cartoonish artwork provided are precursors to the ones you experience in Black & White. I am NOT a fan of "shoot 'em up" games, but I loved the first-person shooter aspect of this game. The controls are rather easy to learn and the combination of weapons and extra accessories make the game very fun to play. The multi-player addition is also entertaining but perhaps not as fun as some games. This is one of the few "shoot 'em up" games that might be more fun in the stand-alone version (vs. the PC) than the multi-player mode. The multi-player configuration is still entertaining enough to keep you hooked.

A quick note on some of the earlier reviews. The overall rating of this game has been lowered because it made the mistake of being released too early in order to capture the holiday shoppers. Three patches have since been released and cleared up most of the technical issues involved. I haven't had any crashing problems as of late. This is a game I delved into not expecting to enjoy but was utterly surprised. A keeper for anyone that would like to spend their free time with an entertaining PC game.

Very Entertaining

The most memorable game I've played

I've played some of the big titles like Half-Life and Serious Sam. They're great games that deserve their notoriety, but I had more fun playing this lesser known gem.

The first thing you notice with Giants is the lush colors and gorgeous soundscape. The visual environment is easily the most inviting I've seen in a game -- so much so that I was compelled to find a vantage point and just look around for a while. The sounds are enchanting and complement the visuals and action perfectly.

The weapons aren't the hose-em-all stuff found in games like Serious Sam (don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing with those too), but they fit the game and have lots of play value. And getting right down to it, how can any gun compare to a giant that can pick up human-sized enemies and throw them as a weapon?

You play three three kinds of beings in Giants. The first is a Mecc (a humanoid extraterrestrial), the second is Delphi the Sea Reaper, and the third is Kabuto the Giant monster. Each being has several missions, and the missions for the Meccs and Delphi culminate in a fort-building mission that requires destruction of a sea reaper facility.

I enjoyed building the forts. It can be a bit frustrating to see your fort demolished by sea-reapers (not nearly as catastrophic as some StarCraft missions), but you gain a lot of control once you realize how to place your turrets.

Delphi is probably the most low-key of the characters, but she's still fun. Going from the Mecc's shooting and flying to Delphi's magic and swimming was a nice change of pace, and I like how the change doesn't disrupt the feel of the game.

Stomping around as Kabuto and eating your enemies is great fun. And as if being a Giant weren't cool enough, you get to grow bigger by eating smarties. Being big is your weapon, and it's arguably the funnest weapon in the game.

If you think you can deal with the lack of in-game saves, do yourself a favor and check Giants out. I just ordered my second copy of the game and can't wait to play it again.

Graphics 5/5 The Graphics in this game are quite frankly some of the most amazing I have ever seen. This game truly takes advantage of the wonderful Unreal engine.

Sound 5/5 The sound was original and memorable, and I especially liked the voice acting for Sappho and Baz. The weapons sound great and sometimes they even have a good twist of humor.

AI 4/5 The enemies were well done but sometimes a tad stupid and the problem is there is only one diffuculty setting. In other aspects they were quite adept at taking cover and sniping.

Replay Value 5/5 This game I could probably play in a airplane restroom for months at a time and still enjoy myself.

Weapons 5/5 Creative but conventional the weapons were fun to use and sometimes I would just shoot them off for fun. I especially like the sniper rifle and tornado spell.

Gameplay 5/5 With above elements mixed together this is like three great games in one well priced package.

Overall 5/5 I Love this game.

I don't have time to go down the pub for beer!

I have noticed something about reviews for games of an exellent quality either they get great reviews or people that have a problems installing or running the game slate it without realising that it is not the fault of the games company but the fact that they cannot check all hardware configs and these guys have just had an unluckly time as there config wasn't looked at.

But enough of that... My machine works fine with GIANTS... 700mhz PII, 128mb RAM and a GeFore DDR ram video card...

This game is cool and the cut scenes for the meccs and seareaper missons are brilliant... its a shame they waver on the giant...

The extra modes of play... not just shooting and midless killing but a race game and base building help to keep up the intrest. And it has to be the best looking game I have seen for ages... Well the smarties and Vimps are a little ugly but...

I think this game is well worth purchasing and I only gave it 4 stars out of 5 because no game is perfect and there are them few niggles with no funny intros for the Giant... And sometimes some worlds slow down (I think this was due to bad level optimisation.)

Also getting Multiplayer to work was a chore... but it works fine now... and please update the patch now... although it doesn't need it to play it fixes a load of problems.

I would actually say the multiplayer is well balanced (due to what has been said in ealier reviews. The guy must have been useless as the other two characters or something.) As Kabuto can kill the Gyrocopter easily... and the meccs are no problem to pick up and chew to death. I haven't played as delphi multiplayer yet... I hope its as enjoyable as the Mecc and Kabuto.

Overall graphics are spot on.

Gameplay is wide and varied if a little lame for kabuto and the delphi reaper ski.

Guns for Meccs are cool.

Base building is easy and fun.

Buggy and unfinished...but a heckuva lot of fun

First: My review system was a P3-450, 96 megs of SDRAM and a RIVA TNT2 card. Well, well, well. This game certainly is a conundrum. I wanted to love it, and indeed, contained inside this ambitious design are some jaw-dropping moments, side-splitting humor, and genuine fun the likes of which I've not experienced since classics like Half-Life. Unfortunately, along for the ride are some game destroying crash bugs and glitches. Well, that's life, but it leaves you wondering what this game could have been.

I'd read many glittering reviews of this game's graphics. "The bump mapping is spectacular!" they'd say, and when I saw the 3d-rendered menu I was indeed impressed. However, when the first mission loaded up, I was disappointed to see that the character models were somewhat primitive, the view range was limited, and there was no bump mapping to be seen. Of course, my system is to blame for this: my old TNT2, being based on five generation old technology, just isn't cutting it anymore. The bump mapping effects, in particular, seem to be reserved for Geforce cards. However, I still consider my system to be a decent gaming platform, and I'm sure not everybody out there has a P4 with Geforce2 Ultra and 512 MB RDRAM, so I felt I needed to mention it. Interestingly, other, older games run faster and look better on my computer than Giants does. Could be driver optimizations for the Geforce2, who knows. Suffice to say you're looking at 700 MHz and a Geforce to really enjoy this game.

Wellll, onto the gameplay. This is where Giants really shines. When playing as either the Meccs, Reapers, or Kabuto, the game offers three very different play styles, all of which are equally fun. The game's narrative is tied together by genuinely hilarious in-engine cutscenes, featuring some of the best writing and voice acting I've ever seen in a game. The funniest cutscenes feature the Meccs and the native smarties that populate the island. Both the Meccs and the smarties are for some reason British, lending a Monty Python-ish feel to the game.

Example (not verbatim): The Meccs, after blowing up a prison, go to look for their friend Timmy, a smartie. They find a injured smartie there who says Timmy was his 'singing partner'. SMARTIE: Yes, we sung many a song before they took him...those were the days. BORJOYZEE(Timmy's grandfather): Now listen, you, tell me where they've taken him or you'll be feeling the end of my stick! SMARTIE: Oh, yes, was that another song? There were so many.. Borjoyzee hits him viciously with his stick on his exposed brain while the Meccs wince.

Anyways, I suppose you had to be there, but rest assured, the entire first third of the game is hilarious. However, when you get to Delphi (the sea reaper)'s missions, the humor takes a turn for the worse, as if the writers had run out of ideas. And by the time Kabuto rolls around, the cutscenes stop almost entirely, except for the intro to his missions and the final cutscene.

And even getting to Kabuto or the Reapers is near impossible with the game in its current state. With no in-mission save, and some missions lasting more than an hour, the game would be hard to begin with--but not only that, there are vicious crash bugs that kick you out of the game entirely. This happened to me five times on one particularly hard Mecc mission, and I was almost ready to uninstall it in disgust when I finally beat the mission.

There are also some other aspects that suggest the game was sent out unfinished, such as a Delphi mission where you are supposed to steal a Reaperski, but can build one at your base!!! and the varying quality of graphics and objectives between missions. It's really a shame, this could have been one of the best games ever with a little more time. Shame, Interplay, shame. Let the developers do their jobs.

This game is a great experience, and with a little spit and polish could be one of the all time greats. If you've got the patience and horsepower to see it through, you're in for a wild ride.

I heard terrific things about Giants: Citizen Kabuto and was sadly disappointed when I finally purchased and played it for myself. The most obvious annoyance was the lack of an in game save option. I just don't have patience to play the same mission over and over. And over. If you believe patience is a virtue, you can develop it playing this game. As for me, I couldn't even stand to finish it.

Awesome Game
