So near but yet so far...

...To getting 5 stars! This is in many respects an excellent game! I am a big fan of the regular Dragon Warrior series, and one of the big features of that series were the well-conceived battles. They aren't quite as interesting in DWM, because there is a maximum of 3 foes at any one time, allowing for less complexity. However, there are many compensating features--the monster breeding, the tournament levels, and, particularly, the random dungeon layouts. And the game does not end at the end--far from it! Far off in the distance is the possibility of defeating the master trainer, and farther still the possibility of collecting all the monsters.

And it is in that last area, alas, where the game's fatal flaw resides. The final monster is generated by a complex, multi-generational breeding process. And two of his many ancestors that cannot be bred can be found only in a couple of dungeons that can be accessed only by winning, on three diferent occasions, five consecutive games of rock-paper scissors against other characters. Think of it--that means you would have to try an average of 729 times before doing this! And to add insult to injury, you have to suffer having the instructions read to you each and every one of those 729 times! A true masterpiece of playtesting stupidity. However, there's enough else in the game to warrant 4 stars. Just don't say I didn't warn you.

Am I the only one?

I was a bit surprised when I went to check the reviews for this game and discovered that it was receiving glowing reviews. I was like, "Am I the only onw who doesn't like this game?" I played this game and I found it fairly boring. I like the Dragon monster, but I found it very hard to progress in the game because it took like 100 battles to get one monster to the next level. And if I'm not mistaken you have to give up some monsters at some point, and some monsters get less useful and more and more weak. I don't know, that's just my personal experience; while playing Dragon seemed to get weaker. And I didn't want to give him up because I *love* dragons!

Yes I am a Pokemon fan. But strangely I did not think this was a rip-off. I do like the Pokemon games like fifty times as much, but this game was not a clone of Pokemon I don't think. Maybe Pokemon gave the creators of this game inspiration, but I don't think they were trying to rip Pokemon off.

This game is pretty good at the start. It has an interesting storyline in which the sister is kidnapped by monsters and you must save her. It's actually a very boyish game in my opinion, especially considering the character desines. But I'm a girl and found the character desines to be pretty cool, so it's not like girls CAN'T enjoy these games. But the gameplay gets old. Like I said, the monsters get harder and harder to level up. Seriously you need like a thusand exp. points and you're getting like 20 or so at a time! Maybe there's a path I didn't discover or something. I don't know. But I found that the game was kind of fun at first, but got old later. And you practically HAVE to trade in your first monsters for stronger ones, unlike in Pokemon where you can pretty much use the same ones all the way through.

I had really, really wanted to like this game. But I found the masters in the Star Tournamnet or whatever impossibly hard. And as I said earlier, the game was funner in the beginning but it went downhill. I didn't really like the battles and I felt the names were uncreative. And when you lose you lose like all your items! The replayability isn't as good as Pokemon either; I think you start out with the same moster and it's hard to get a diverse team.

Don't yell at me, but it is my opinion that Pokemon is much more well-thought out and has a much better replayability. Those games don't push you into trading in your early Poemon for better ones, and the character desines are more creative.

I don't hate this game. I'm not organizing a club that is pro-Pokemon and anti-DragonWarriors. I'm not destined to hate anyone who likes this game. I just don't like it much and feel that there isn't much creativity here. Not the most horribl;e game ever made but definitely not in the Top Ten.

Great Dragon Warrior/Quest Spinoff

I found this game great fun when I first got oh, back in 5th grade or so. I was very into the Dragon Quest/Warrior series and I wanted to try out this one. I found this game a lot of fun from when I picked it up and I couldn't put it down. The system is quite similar to Pokemon but not as complex really and this one I found to be more fun. It was pretty straight forward, you did quests, then tournaments etc, but I found that to be very fun. The monsters in this game were a bit repetative because of the fact they would take a monster then change it's color and make a new monster with some additional attributes, but other than that I thought the game was great fun.

Best game since final fantasy

I beaten this game, it was so easy and fun, i got every monster from the ???? family, and darkdrium took me a long time to get, hes the best monster in the game, at lvl 80 when he could of reached lvl 99, i got him to all stats at its maximum level.

i also laughed at slime family, its funny cus when you beat them, they still smile, and if u injure them, just my personal opion about the slimes
-healer:first boss and heals and easy to beat
-dragon: second boss and has some powerful attacks when you have crudy monsters, like fireair and stuff
-golem: third boss with passionate power, has a strong attack called strongD and others like surge and stuff.
-fourth could be an option, cus its a madcat or a madknight, you can choose to sacrifice that dragon to open the portal to the madknight boss, hes hard cus he can do major damage like massacre.
-Battlerex: 5th boss, strong and way better looking and sexier then the dragon boss, he withholds a strong axe and chop you to pieces, scary.
-facetree: 6th boss, extremely easy cus it uses stupid atacks likepoisonair and physical attacks that do nothing.
-Gigantes: 7th boss thats really easy to beat because of the strong willing power and major brain damage, does have a high attack, but its dumb.
-Orochi: 8th boss, has 5 heads and its a weird looking dragon, easy to kill
-Kingslime: huge gigantic slime with a crown, does alot of healing and smash attacks, easy though
-bigeye: 10th boss, easy because of its huge ability of healing, doesnt do much but physical attacks, easy enough to beat.
-servant,centasaur, evilarmor: combined together to attack feroiusly with quad hits and major damage with blizzard and many bizzare moves.
-akubar: easy enough to say, 12th boss, kill it with everything you got
-jamaris: easy biurd to kill, does quadhits, 13th boss
-skydragon: 14th boss, a flying dragon with fire atacks like blazemost and fireair.
-durran: 15th boss with powerful magic attacks, but also the 15th boss, has 2 servants, sort of hard to beat and a ninja who is very hard to beat, can't even catch this weird monster, its supposed to be you but in the future as a ninja who does wind spells and hugs blasts of magic.
- the rest of the bosses are from the boss family starting with dracolord and ends with deathmore, i dont know why you dont fight darkdrium, hes the ultimate and rarest you have to have watabou who is also very rare easy to beat,
- next after you beat that you verse your very own sister milayou, with a rainhawk, metalking and coatal
- after comes the last boss in the game, the old grandpa who is a weird freak guy who is very weird, has a powerful divinegon though, takes forever to kill i do about 1040 damage with twinhits and takes about 5 hits with that to kill him, he also has a rosevine which is my second monster besides the darkdrium, and lastly has the goldslime which u have to get to face him, last monster is a eyeder of my threesome, okay.

i really think if you like this game, go and get final fantasy and lors of the rings the third age. okay theress my review and ejoy it.

Dragon Warrior Monsters (2000.) The first game in the Dragon Warrior Monsters series.

Over the years, the Dragon Warrior series has been one of the finest RPG series out there. Perhaps one of the greatest things about the series is the sheer variety of monsters that you get to fight against. At long last, we are given a way to control those ever-so-cool monsters! For this entry in the Dragon Warrior series, the series ventures into Pokemon-esque territory. Read on for my review of Dragon Warrior Monsters.

PROS:
-THERE ARE TONS OF MONSTERS, AND A TON OF DIVERSITY BETWEEN THEM ALL. The monsters in this game fall into many different species, and no two monsters are exactly alike. The total number of monsters in this game dwarfs that of the early Pokemon games.
-THE GAME FEATURES CHARACTERS/MONSTERS/ETC. DESIGNED BY AKIRA TORIYAMA, OF DRAGON BALL FAME. Akira Toriyama is a creative genius, and his creations in this game stand as solid proof of it.
-CATCHY MUSIC AND GRAPHICS. The music is diverse enough to always fit the mood of the location that you're currently exploring, and the graphics are cool enough to draw in older gamers, while at the same time, cute enough to draw in younger gamers.
-YOU CAN BREED MONSTERS. In this game, you can get a male and female monster together and have them give birth to a new monster altogether! This is one of the greatest features of the game, period.
-THE LAYOUTS OF THE MONSTER WORLDS ARE RANDOMLY GENERATED. This means that almost every time that you go into one of the monster worlds, you're going to be in for somewhat of a surprise. This will keep you coming back to the worlds rather frequently.
-MUCH MORE OF A "TRADITIONAL RPG" FEEL THAN OTHER MONSTER-ORIENTED GAMES. The best way to describe the overall atmosphere of this game would be "Dragon Warrior meets Pokemon", and that's a good thing. You've really got to play the game to appreciate it.
-LOTS OF HIDDEN STUFF. In addition to the standard levels that you can go to, there are many hidden ones that you can unlock, as well, by performing certain tasks.

CONS:
-WHEN YOU BREED MONSTERS, THE MONSTERS YOU USED TO CREATE THE EGG ARE GONE FOR GOOD. Admittingly, this isn't that big of a deal, but it's bound to frustrate younger, inexperienced players.
-THERE IS A HUGE BUG IN THE COMBAT SYSTEM. If you assign a monster to attack a rival monster that has already been defeated, that attack just goes to waste! I thought this bug had been worked out of all the RPGs of today. Apparently I was wrong.
-IF YOU DIE, YOU LOSE ALMOST ALL OF YOUR ITEMS. This can become frustrating when you've accumulated a good deal of recovery items, or found a lot of items in the Monster World that you wish to sell for a profit.
-THE COVER ART IS TERRIBLE! While the original Japanese version of the game featured awesome cover art by none other than Akira Toriyama himself, the American version of the game features a rather poor piece of three-dimensional artwork that looks more like it belongs in a candy bar commercial.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a damn good game, despite a few minor flaws. Is it a Pokemon rip-off? No. It's something more than that, and you've got to play it to appreciate it. The Dragon Warrior series usually features nothing but excellent games, and this is no exception. Got a Game Boy? Don't even think about passing this game by if you're an RPG fan.

toooooooooooooo easy

Although this game is one of my favorite of all time(despite the horrible grapics outside of battle)it was just too easy. At least in dwm2 you had a hard time after completing the regular quest. After starry night in this game it was simply going through warpholes and beating bosses. I beat starry night, the master monster tamer, beat every warphole and got watabou all in under 25 hours. Let me gove every body a hint breed breed breed until you can get a Goldslime and a Jamyrus throw in any other monster and then go to the slime warp got to warp 25 and beat on metabbles you get 22,000 experience per its too easy easy easy easy.

Ultimate game in the history of history of the universe!!!

It is the ultimate game! The only bad part of it is that the game is not long enough to have more fun. It is a challenging yet fun game. The only game that I can think of that is better is Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 and Halo. It also holds some of the cooling looking guys in the world! While walking around, you look so cool with those guys following you around. I am like a DWM freak and have been playing the game for over six years now.

I've played my fair share of video games, but this one stands out. There are a lot of good GB and GBA games: Pokemon, Metroid, Legend Of Zelda, Super Mario, Kirby, etc. When you look at RPGs for Game Boy, you think Pokemon, Golden Sun, but now look at Dragon Warrior Monsters. Don't Judge a book by it's cover. A lot of people who have a grudge against pokemon would think this is a copy game. WRONG! This game requires mind power and a lot of work. Try to get the strategy guide, it will really help make it a great experiance(it is now very expensive but it is worth it all the way; try looking on ebay). Play this game and I promise you, ya won't be disappointed.

Great game, but could've been better

I'm a die-hard fan of the Dragon Warrior series to the point where i contacted Square-Enix via instant messenger and told them of my ideas for Dragon Warrior Monsters 3. Due to copyright issues, i wasn't successful. After having played Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Tara's Adventures, I desperately wanted this game. I managed to get a used version, and as of now have put a total of 55 hours into the game. This game is a very long game. It's not hard, but a majority of the time spent in this game is for training. The goal of this game is to rescue your sister Milayou who was kidnapped by Warabou some stupid looking monster. In order to save you sister, you must get and train an army of monsters and win all the classes especially the S class to enter the tournament where if you win, you get to make a wish (which is obviously to save your sister). This is how I rated this game:

GRAPHICS:10/10
MUSIC:10/10
REPLAY VALUE:1/10
GAMEPLAY:5/10
OVERALL:3/5

However, this is one of many games that has a very bad replay value. However you don't have to re-play this game, you could just either train or compete again in anything. The only problem with this gamne is there are no other side quests like in Dragon Warrior Monsters 2. That makes the game boring while you train. the only problem that got me away from this game. Well that's all I gotta say.
