I was a bit surprised when I went to check the reviews for this game and discovered that it was receiving glowing reviews. I was like, "Am I the only onw who doesn't like this game?" I played this game and I found it fairly boring. I like the Dragon monster, but I found it very hard to progress in the game because it took like 100 battles to get one monster to the next level. And if I'm not mistaken you have to give up some monsters at some point, and some monsters get less useful and more and more weak. I don't know, that's just my personal experience; while playing Dragon seemed to get weaker. And I didn't want to give him up because I *love* dragons!

Yes I am a Pokemon fan. But strangely I did not think this was a rip-off. I do like the Pokemon games like fifty times as much, but this game was not a clone of Pokemon I don't think. Maybe Pokemon gave the creators of this game inspiration, but I don't think they were trying to rip Pokemon off.

This game is pretty good at the start. It has an interesting storyline in which the sister is kidnapped by monsters and you must save her. It's actually a very boyish game in my opinion, especially considering the character desines. But I'm a girl and found the character desines to be pretty cool, so it's not like girls CAN'T enjoy these games. But the gameplay gets old. Like I said, the monsters get harder and harder to level up. Seriously you need like a thusand exp. points and you're getting like 20 or so at a time! Maybe there's a path I didn't discover or something. I don't know. But I found that the game was kind of fun at first, but got old later. And you practically HAVE to trade in your first monsters for stronger ones, unlike in Pokemon where you can pretty much use the same ones all the way through.

I had really, really wanted to like this game. But I found the masters in the Star Tournamnet or whatever impossibly hard. And as I said earlier, the game was funner in the beginning but it went downhill. I didn't really like the battles and I felt the names were uncreative. And when you lose you lose like all your items! The replayability isn't as good as Pokemon either; I think you start out with the same moster and it's hard to get a diverse team.

Don't yell at me, but it is my opinion that Pokemon is much more well-thought out and has a much better replayability. Those games don't push you into trading in your early Poemon for better ones, and the character desines are more creative.

I don't hate this game. I'm not organizing a club that is pro-Pokemon and anti-DragonWarriors. I'm not destined to hate anyone who likes this game. I just don't like it much and feel that there isn't much creativity here. Not the most horribl;e game ever made but definitely not in the Top Ten.

Good, but could be better

First off, I have to say that this is one of the best games I've played on Game Boy Color. Make that THE best game I've played on GBC. So why did I give it four stars? Read on...

The battles are very easy to understand, and spell effects are awesome. However, the text keeps flying across the screen, unless you set it as the slowest it can go. Since you can carry around three monsters, three enemy monsters can attack you at a time. This can get really exciting, as one enemy monster heals another, or gets confused and kills their ally...

Breeding is great fun! I had lots of fun, picking out monsters, etc., until I finally had a team of three super-monsters! Ok, so...what am I supposed to do with these other monsters I've collected? You can only have three with you at a time, and if you leave your monsters at the farm, their Wildness goes up, which makes them not listen to you. So, you'll end up just collecting hordes of monsters that you never use, just so you can rack up the number of monsters you've collected. Also, it was pretty discouraging, when I'd acquire a new monster, but find I had no use for it.

"Quests" are fun. They mostly consist of you trying to find a monster for so-and-so to open a Traveler's Gate with. You can find and fight more monsters in the Traveler's Gates.

Arena battles are awesome. I really had great pride when my monsters defeated the other guy's.

The monsters actually follow you around on-screen! And EVERY SINGLE monster looks different, too..unlike Pokemon, where your Jigglypuff looked exactly like your Charmander.

The storyline is fun, the graphics are fine. All in all, DWM is a great game that just needs a little trimming around the hedges.

Has enough in it for the die-hard Dragon Warrior Fan

In my opinion the Dragon Warrior series has been the best rpg series ever. What they lacked in graphics, they soared in gameplay, storyline, and most of all FUN!

Is this game worthy of the Dragon Warrior name? The answer is yes. It's got the same music, monsters, and spells from the original series. The main problem I had with this game was the overwhelming similarity to pokemon. You are a monster tamer who controls your monsters and pits them against other groups of monsters in an arena and in the outside world. The other problem I had was that movement in this game was too structured. You are only allowed to move around a castle-tree and through warp tunnels to specific outside areas where you move through until you find a boss and kill it.

Outside of these shortcomings, this game kicks .... You refine characters by breeding them with other monsters until you create the perfect monster. Every monster gets up to 8 spells. Like the other dragon warrior games, there is a lot of level-gaining to improve your characters. I've been waiting many years for a dragon warrior game for gameboy. And after playing this, I am not disappointed.

This game has made quite a few ripples in the video game lake. Many of the respected gaming magazines have critiqued it saying it was, to quote Nintendo Power, "Another Poke'mon rip-off". Hehe. I almost laughed out loud. In case you don't know, NP is a die hard poke'fanatic magazine that used to be worth reading. Anyhoo, The game is actually a very good game. I've heard it take beef for it's graphics, and compared to poke'mon, etc... From a person who got dang far in the poke'mon blue game (the elite four) this game is much more of an RPG and more strategy is required. The graphics are quite a bit better than poke'mon, and, unlike poke'mon, there is less-self serving purpose in DWM. I like the design of poke'mon, but it comes short. Everytime I play it, and start liking it, I'm then jarred with the cheezy it'l-please-a-7 year old story and dialogue. Come on! The point of poke'mon is to "Be the best master of all time" for heaven's sake! Whereas DWM is to rescue his poor lil' sis (and catch a few monsters on the way). The art is done by my favorite artist, Akira Toriyama, artist and creator of Dr.Slump, Dragonball, SandLand and many others. The monsters are in very nice color too (especially my favorite monster, Pizzaro). However, a word of caution, the game can get very tedious for a true dyed in the wool RPG fan (much like myself). Hours spent on just leveling up. Parents, this is not for the younger ones, considering the strategy involved that poke'mon simply does not require. A poke'person would likely yawn and fall asleep to this game.

But hey, that's just my word on the matter.

cool in some ways

dragon warriors is not the same as pokemon its much easy to play in two ways 1- is much fun and you have to play with 5 bootons the only thing that is difficult is that you have to chose the eggs of the monsters, but i think that its an excellent rpg(if you cant buy pokemon by this game)i strongly suggest it.

4.5 stars - Excellent game

Dragon Warrior Monsters (2000.) The first game in the Dragon Warrior Monsters series.

Over the years, the Dragon Warrior series has been one of the finest RPG series out there. Perhaps one of the greatest things about the series is the sheer variety of monsters that you get to fight against. At long last, we are given a way to control those ever-so-cool monsters! For this entry in the Dragon Warrior series, the series ventures into Pokemon-esque territory. Read on for my review of Dragon Warrior Monsters.

PROS:
-THERE ARE TONS OF MONSTERS, AND A TON OF DIVERSITY BETWEEN THEM ALL. The monsters in this game fall into many different species, and no two monsters are exactly alike. The total number of monsters in this game dwarfs that of the early Pokemon games.
-THE GAME FEATURES CHARACTERS/MONSTERS/ETC. DESIGNED BY AKIRA TORIYAMA, OF DRAGON BALL FAME. Akira Toriyama is a creative genius, and his creations in this game stand as solid proof of it.
-CATCHY MUSIC AND GRAPHICS. The music is diverse enough to always fit the mood of the location that you're currently exploring, and the graphics are cool enough to draw in older gamers, while at the same time, cute enough to draw in younger gamers.
-YOU CAN BREED MONSTERS. In this game, you can get a male and female monster together and have them give birth to a new monster altogether! This is one of the greatest features of the game, period.
-THE LAYOUTS OF THE MONSTER WORLDS ARE RANDOMLY GENERATED. This means that almost every time that you go into one of the monster worlds, you're going to be in for somewhat of a surprise. This will keep you coming back to the worlds rather frequently.
-MUCH MORE OF A "TRADITIONAL RPG" FEEL THAN OTHER MONSTER-ORIENTED GAMES. The best way to describe the overall atmosphere of this game would be "Dragon Warrior meets Pokemon", and that's a good thing. You've really got to play the game to appreciate it.
-LOTS OF HIDDEN STUFF. In addition to the standard levels that you can go to, there are many hidden ones that you can unlock, as well, by performing certain tasks.

CONS:
-WHEN YOU BREED MONSTERS, THE MONSTERS YOU USED TO CREATE THE EGG ARE GONE FOR GOOD. Admittingly, this isn't that big of a deal, but it's bound to frustrate younger, inexperienced players.
-THERE IS A HUGE BUG IN THE COMBAT SYSTEM. If you assign a monster to attack a rival monster that has already been defeated, that attack just goes to waste! I thought this bug had been worked out of all the RPGs of today. Apparently I was wrong.
-IF YOU DIE, YOU LOSE ALMOST ALL OF YOUR ITEMS. This can become frustrating when you've accumulated a good deal of recovery items, or found a lot of items in the Monster World that you wish to sell for a profit.
-THE COVER ART IS TERRIBLE! While the original Japanese version of the game featured awesome cover art by none other than Akira Toriyama himself, the American version of the game features a rather poor piece of three-dimensional artwork that looks more like it belongs in a candy bar commercial.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a damn good game, despite a few minor flaws. Is it a Pokemon rip-off? No. It's something more than that, and you've got to play it to appreciate it. The Dragon Warrior series usually features nothing but excellent games, and this is no exception. Got a Game Boy? Don't even think about passing this game by if you're an RPG fan.

Very fun and addictive Pokemon clone

The Dragon Warrior franchise makes its way to Gameboy Color with a fantastic game that adds to an already fun epic Dragon Warrior RPG. This game is far different than Dragon Warriors of the past, because now in this game, you are a lone adventurer, who can find, capture and tame up to 3 monsters at once to fight for him (like Pokemon). You can get 100s of more monsters, but you can only have 3 in your party at a time, the rest must sit "on the bench." You can train your monsters by walking around the world, fighting monsters, fighting in competitions of 3 battles or fighting other trainers who wander around like yourself. The sheer depth of this game is amazing, because when you capture monsters, tame them and raise where they will have unique skills, then you pair off mature male and female monsters to have a "wedding" and create a baby monster with all of the skills as the parents. That is pretty much the plot, unfortunately the world which you must roam around to train your monsters is not really a world, its more like a random maze. Literally random, each time you enter the world, its different. With all of that being said, this game like all Dragon Warrior games is fun and highly addictive, however the graphics are very poor.
