Fantastic Game!

I think Myst is one of the most intriging computer games out there. The worlds are so realistic that I found myself completely detached from the outside world many times! The storyline is wonderful and I loved the idea of traveling to different worlds through a book. The Quicktime works excellent and in sync with the rest of the game, and the music is really amazing. The puzzles are VERY hard and it took me a very long time to solve a few (especially the underground maze in the spaceship world!) I plan to buy Riven very soon and have heared it is even better! I love the strategy involved and the in depth logic! And for all the Myst and Riven fans out there, I heard about a third game called Myst 3: Exile set to be released Spring of 2001!

An Engrossing Challenge

I've just completed the Myst Masterpiece Edition game, and found it thoroughly engrossing. While not familiar with the original edition, certainly the Masterpiece Edition boasts arresting visuals and haunting music. The major part of Myst's draw is its puzzles, some of which are fiendishly difficult, but this edition has a digital guide which can step in with some assistance when needed. While making too much use of this feature would undoubtedly take the fun out of the game, every now and then it can help keep you from becoming totally stuck and frustrated. This game tests your powers of observation, memory, intuition and reasoning in an entertaining context, and solving one of the game's tough puzzles on your own is a satisfying payoff.

must-have software, even if you play few games

I have little time for computer games these days, but Myst is a must have piece of software for all home computers. If you haven't played an adventure game since the old text-only days of the 1980's, then you will be in for a hugh shock playing Myst on modern equipment!

Great Game!

Myst Masterpiece Edition was great. The graphics were great as well as the audio. It started out as very confusing at first because of the lack on information given in the beginning. But then that just adds to the fun of the game. I did have two complaints about the game however. The first was the odd (and sometimes confusing) slide-show style gameplay. If you were not familiar with your surroundings it was easy to get confused. Sometimes by clicking to the side you would turn 90 degrees and other times a full 180 degrees. My other complaint was the lack of difficult puzzles. After catching on to the main theme of the game I beat in a very short time, much shorter than I had expected. (About 4 1/2 hours total playing time.) However it was a great game to play and despite the short time I had fun while I was playing.

First of all to those who do not have the patience to play a true strategy game without stuff blowing up every second and a half don't bother.

You will need to set the Windows compatibility mode up to handle this game if you have anything other than Win 95 or 98. I have played this and Riven without an issue on an XP Pro machine after setting up the mode and have had no issues at all.

Comments by those that call this game boring are in need of Ritalin and/or an addtional few years of true life experience aside from hanging out at the drug store threatening the elderly and practicing their graffiti skills.

The Myst trilogy is a set of classic games that require a skill that seems to be severely lacking these days, independent thought. So, if you would like to be challenged with something other than a grumbling alien shooting snot colored laser beams or the cliched wizard mumbling poorly written text then this is your game.

Now if URU could have held up it's end of the bargain I would be happy, but all good things....

Best game ever!

I first bought Riven, and I started to play fine. Then I noticed that there was Myst, where everything began. It is not that you must buy Myst first, however you enjoy Riven and Myst 3 ( which I did not buy yet) much better if you follow the sequence.

I was surprised and very pleased with the puzzles. It was very hard to stop playing, since you really enter the atmosphere of the island. This version has a help system that give tips for the puzzles, which is very useful for first-time gamers and makes you understand the spirit of the game.

But don't use it too much, otherwise you loose part of the thrill..

For the game I can finally say, take your time, don't rush, enjoy every mystery and every sight, make your personal notes for the puzzles and play it. It does worthy it!

The original Myst has stumped the most intelligent players. This version will give you hints and solutions to the puzzles if you get stuck. You won't be needing outside help with "this" Myst.

Wow, what a improvement.

When myst came out a while back, I was totally amazed. This amazing and incredable game brought me to another time. It seemed like the future with these wonderfully eye-pleasing graphics and plesent sound. The puzzles contained in it were difficult but not impossible like some other games i've played, and they were not child-like either. Above all else, the game was fun. I thought "wow, what a game".

When Riven came out a few years later I thought "Yea" because another one of these excellent games would be out but then I was crushed. The puzzles were impossible, the graphics were terrible, and the sound was choppy and staticy. {and its not my computer, I have a good one.} I even got so frustrated I bought the hint guide hoping for an answer and to this day, i still can't beat the game. After that pitiful display, I lost all my faith in Myst.

I decided to try Myst again and to my dismay, it wouldn't work on my advanced computer. {At that time it was with WIN 98 and PIII 600}. I didn't know what I would do without Myst. Later on, I was walking around in a store and I found this Myst Maspterpiece edition. I check the requirements and it fit my system. I was amazed. I bought it, ran home, and installed it. I couldn't believe it. It was the same old myst I installed so long ago, but it was better. The walkaround graphics are just mind blowing. I couldn't believe it, but they took a perfect game, and made it better.

If you are a true Myst fanatic, you need this incredable improvement. If you are about to try Myst, this is the perfect way to bring you into it. Just don't buy Myst III, it sucks as much as riven, but the graphic requirements are so much steeper and the game has more bugs then the rainforest.

It's a-ight.

Long version:

*Installs game on to computer running XP, plays for a bit*
Game locks up.
*control-alt-delete*
Computer locks up.
*Hard shutdown*
Repeat about five times.
*sets game down for a few days, deletes several gigs of music files in some attempt to appease the computer gods*
*tries again*
Compter locks up.
*Uninstalls game*
*Uninstalls QuickTime 9*
*Installs game and Quicktime 4*
*beats game*

It lost a star for several reasons:
1. Almost killing my crappy computer.
2. The bad acting (I know they probably couldn't afford the best and Achenar/Atrus weren't that bad, but Sirrus- yeesh!) and weird mid-Atlantic, pseudo-British accents.
3. Installing AOL on my computer.
4. Having a twist that you could see from a thousand miles away. But maybe you are supposed to see it from a thousand miles away.
5. The brothers' endings were really corny and didn't really reflect their personalities. *SPOILER* It seems like Achenar would rip out a page and burn it in front of you before torching the library and Sirrus would say "Thank you. Unfortunately, I have to make sure there's no way that you can threaten me," before taking the books to the furnace.
*END SPOILER*
6. Not a lot of replay value unless you just want to look at the pretty landscapes.
So, except for #1, nitpicks, really.

I liked how technically, you could beat the game in about 5 minutes. Very "Wizard of Oz" and it added that extra touch of realism since you didn't have to explore anything, the gameplay was more like a bonus.

I liked the real ending. It didn't really bother me that it was just a shill for Riven, which is weird for me. I liked that you don't get some kind of reward except the ability to explore the Myst worlds because how hollow would that be? The game has themes of the evils of greed and lust for power. How are you supposed to be rewarded? Money? Power? A high score? Come on. The point of the game is to explore and discover. Having a traditional ending would likewise mess up the game.

I thought the graphics were okay especially when you consider that this game was made what, 15 years ago? But I don't play a lot of software games so I have low standards. It certainly didn't feel like a slideshow.

I liked how the game was kid-safe yet wasn't dumbed down or cutesy. I don't mind violence, swearing, or sex in video games but it's nice to have the anti-Grand Theft Auto. Oh yeah, the hints were good too. They really made the game playable for people not used to this type of game.

Summary:
A good kid-safe game for non-gamers who want a puzzle, but you might have to fiddle with your computer to get the game to work.

VERY FUN AND INTRUIGING!

This game is great. It makes you use your imagination and think a lot. I didn't understand the concept at first, but once you get the hang of it it becomes easier. I am not saying the levels get easier. I really recomend it to everyone who has an imangination and has a lot of time on their hands, because once you start you won't want to stop.
