I recently bought this game when i got my new home computer. It was recommended to me by friends who thought this would be a great game to start out with.

Alone,on myst island, you must discover the locationn of "linking books". These linking books transport you to other "ages" where you are in search of red and blue pages. The pages must be returned to their books in the island library- each time you do this, you learn more and more of the story.

Artius has entrapped his two sons inside the books where they cannot escape. His sons had betrayed him and Artius himself is nowhere to be found. The search for the pages is the main point of the game and the puzzles vary in difficulty. A nice feature was the "help" options which gave you hints on solving things or the out right solution, if you were stuck.

Like all good stories, this ended with a plea for you to be available to help Artius locate his wife, catherine...and now for the sequel...

All in all, i enjoyed this game, and its puzzles. It was a point and click mouse game but the puzzles and the storyline were the best parts.

Warning!!! Do Not Buy This Buggy/Crashing Stupid Game

If a point and click slide show that crashes your computer every 5 mins is your definition of fun then this game is for you. Also Riven does not appear to run on XP at all. Waste of money, time and software. Eating chalk is more fun than this

Entertaining, visually splendid, remarkably frustrating

Playing Myst reminded me of the episode in
"Red Dwarf" (British sci-fi comedy series)
in which the crew discovers that they're actually
ordinary people who have been playing a virtual
reality sim-game in which they play space travelers.
The attendant is stunned to discover that they've
been playing the intro sequence the entire time.

"But didn't you find the microdot that explains
the secret mission?"
"_What_ microdot?"
"On the wall over Rimmer's bunk, the 'i' in his
swimming certificate! The dot over the i is a microdot.
It's a dead giveaway, innit -
Rimmer can't swim, and he's got a swimming certificate?"

That's about as obscure as most of the puzzles, IMHO.
Gorgeous to look at, wondrous to walk through, but if
it weren't for online tips and tricks, I'd never have
left Myst Island.

Grows on you like a freshly bought Chia pet!!!

Man, what a weird and interesting game. I recently bought my first computer, and this was one of the first games I purchased, due to word of mouth. I figured that, since eight years have passed since its creation and my purchase, that it would go in the "old school game" file...you know, the kind where they're fun and amusing, but you've played better.

At first, I was ready to throw this into the trash bin. After experiencing the frenetic joy of "Half-Life" and thinking that no game could get mellower than "The Sims", I was caught off guard by the mechanics of this game. I spent the first couple of days just wandering around the island, figuring out what in the name of Myst was going on. It got almost to the point of frustration.

Then, slowly but surely, everything started coming together. I sat up in my chair. My mouse clicks were with more confidence. I realized that high school diploma served a purpose after all. The logic of the puzzles was coming to me, and by the end of the game, I was zooming, realizing that my ACT score of 29 was finally deserved.

The aspect of "Myst" that boggles my mind is the complete lack of action. There are no deaths, there are no weapons, there is no score, there is no time limit. You have enemies, but they pose no threat to you during the game. There is no action. There IS, though, a high amount of book reading and star gazing. Sound boring? You bet it does.

Yet...there is suspense. Watching a fuzzy transmission makes my palm sweat. There's something about a barren, silent environment that creeps me out.

Overall, "Myst" features beautiful visuals, impressive gameplay, and an interesting storyline. While playing it, you may be saying, "So?" But then, you can't stop thinking about it whenever you leave it.

Masterpiece is right

When I picked up Myst III (to be played who knows when - I have a five-year backlog) the package also contained Myst and Riven. I first play Myst about 10 years ago, so I decided to load up and play it. The Masterpiece Edition is updated with better graphics and some hints but no new content and ran in Windows 2000 with the Windows98 compatibility mode with no problems. Because I replayed the game in about ten hours or so it is difficult to meaningfully comment on gameplay. Secret doors and the infamous underground railway give most players the hardest time and I will admit having problems on the railway. Anyone having problems can google for hints and tips.

Regardless of difficulties, Myst is one of best games ever made especially for casual players. I rarely give five stars.

This is a great game

I've been aware of Myst for around 10 years now, but never got to play it until now, when I bought this 1999 Masterpiece Edition. But for many years I saw pictures of this game like in magazines and I thought the game was worth buying for just the graphics. Well it has much more than just graphics going for it. Never having played the original from 1993, what I do know is Masterpiece Edition has improved graphics and features. It's nice to see a Rated E game that's fun to play. It's the kind of game even recommended to those who think video games have contributed to the downfall of American society. It's also truly a recommended game if you are sick and tired of those slasher or shoot 'em up games. The game is stuffed with puzzles where you have to open up secret passages, look for clues, activate a spaceship, a tree elevator, or whatever, in order to look for missing pages from a book. The only drawback is some of the quests are a bit on the tedious side. But to make things easier, just write down clues on paper, writting some of this stuff on paper would help save time (some of it is crucial). This package also comes with a screensaver with soundtrack CD. If you like the music from the game enough, then you have this CD to hear the music on a regular CD player. As for the game itself, the graphics are wonderful, and in many places are quite realistic (of course there are other scenes that look obviously like computer graphics). I'm glad to to finally get Myst, and I look forward to getting the sequels.

Frozen Myst

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 2 / 3

I recently purchased Myst Masterpiece as part of the Myst Trilogy. I'm a relative newcomer to adventure gaming, and the many favorable customer reviews I'd read really piqued my interest. I figured it was about time I bought the games considered to be such adventure classics.

I'm sure Myst Masterpiece will be an enjoyable game if I can ever get it to stop freezing my entire system. Everything locks up with alarming frequency, leaving me no other option than to turn my computer off and back on.

Meanwhile, if I haven't done recent "save," many of my game accomplishments become freeze casualties. This necessitates my starting over from the point at which I last saved the game.

I've done everything I can think of to correct this problem, including many uninstall/reinstalls. Nothing I've tried has helped.

Unfortunately, I haven't succeeded in getting help with this issue from Ubi Soft. I've spent a lot of time exploring their online Support Center, and I have yet to see the freezing problem mentioned anywhere.

I'd been hoping that the revamping of Myst into Myst Masterpiece would preclude the existence of major glitches, but I guess it hasn't. So...although the jury is still out on my opinion of the game as a whole, I give its performance two out of five stars.

I'm looking forward to actually being able to play the game with a degree of continuity someday.

This game is awesome and an intrigue at the same time. The story is absolutly fantastic and the remastering of the ambiance is surrealisticly moving. I never saw such an amazing game that is nonviolent and coherent. It is hard to find such a grandious game like Myst because it is not very contemporary to see companies that dedicate their precious hour to create a very astounding and educational game. I play this game all the time and I feel pretty confortable with it, even though I finished it. But the end was an enigma because there is no end. That's cheesy and redundant because I was relating this game to our life and as a human we all die. I think that if the producers were aiming to make this game to look real, they should interconnect it with a normal human life. I hope that you find this game as something you cherish rather than value it as a simple and ordinary game. If a person buys this game and don't like deep observational and mysterious games please don't buy it because myst is a game of discovery and the quest for the truth. I hope you enjoy the game as I did. BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Masterpiece edition has more color.

I originally played this, buying it many years after it came out, and it seemed a little washed out. I went on to buy the Masterpiece Edition, and the colors are so much more vivid! It seems like a little bit different game with so much more color. The library is reddish, instead of brown. While it may be an old game, it's much better in richer color.
