As Real as they have made them

This game offers an adult action gamer everything they could ask for. A very diverse selection of weapons and a solid action packed story. You play Mullins a mercenary for hire whom has to recover some stolen nuclear warheads. Your travels bring you to all corners of the globe to battle terrorists. The best part of the game are the superb graphics and AI especially on higher difficulty levels. The Gouhl redering system also alows hit specific damage (ie. shoot them in the head they are dead, in the hand they drop the gun in the leg they hop around holding it in pain.) Each mission is introduced fully by a excellent animated cutscene and the player truly feels immersed in the game from start to finish. If you love action games and shooters you should consider Soldier of Fortune, in fact it should be #1 on your game list.

Would you like to know why you should get this game.

The 3dmr is primarily a single player map review site so I onlylooked at the single player aspect of the game there. Once the map and mod community gets going, you can find user made expansions at the 3dmr, I'll be sifting through the garbage so you won't have to.

I'll take a look at the multiplayer aspect of SoF here. There are many different ways to play, including Standard, Cap the flag, realistic and assassin. The later without a doubt being the most innovative. The other 3 are pretty self explanatory, so lets talk about assassin. Basically, the rules go like this: You spawn on a server and you are given a target. Your sole mission and only way of scoring is to kill this player. Killing others will only lower your score. When you kill this guy, he is assigned to kill you from then on and you are given a new target. If you keep killing your targets you could have the whole server of full of people trying to kill you. If you kill the people trying to kill you, you get points and you get them off your back. This really has to be experienced. It's a bit slower than regular death match because you don't shoot everything that moves, but it's so much more fun. Quake3 is so boring.

I would say this game is better than Half-Life in many respects. As a former console gamer, I know the joy of precise body hit mechanics from playing Goldeneye. There is nothing like aiming a perfect head shot and being rewarded by the enemy actually dying immediately as a result. The gore is there as you know, but I don't feel that it's some kind of gimmick. I think it's a natural development from allowing precision when shooting. You will not be dissapointed with this game. END

Soldier of Fortune demo in review

Well, I'd agree that this game qualifies under the category of "mindless shooter" but it still appears to be a winner in that category. The graphics are as close to perfect as they come, and that's using the Quake 2 Engine (HEAVILY Modified). The death animations are gruesomely realistic, as are your foes' responses when you shoot them in the leg with a pistol (They hop around screaming, grabbing leg) or when you take them on in the head at point-blank range with a shotgun (A bloody stump, spurting blood remains as the body crumples into a gory heap). If you have EAX or A3D enhanced audio, you'll be amazed by how the sound is projected to where it's actually coming from (Behind and to the left actually sounds like behind and to the left). If you have a geForce based graphics card, you'll be pleased to know that this game actually utilizes what it can do and then some. So if the demo is any indication, this game is a must-buy!

First Person Action Returns from a long hiatus

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 6 / 8

With a long list a horrible First Person Action games including the never to be released Dikatana, the sad Kingpin, and the horrific Blood II, it's a pleasure to see a really find, hardcore, and all together viciously wonderful first person shootem up game come across my computer screen.

Soldier of Fortune, which uses a totally revamped version of the Quake II engine and which is co-produced and released by Activision and Raven Software, is not mearly a combination of previous action games. It in fact takes the game type to a whole new level by adding in some serious real world guns and putting you in real terrorist situations. Although you have to handle them with very rambo-like tactics, the action is fast paced and the cutscenes weave in nicely with the shooting down of the bad guys. However, is it too much to ask to have their lips move when they talk?

The skizy: you are a member of the Army Special Forces, sent in to stop a terrorist who has stolen nuclear weapons and who plans to use them in a few special locations. However, the bad dude who leads the terrorists doesn't plan to be taken down easily. So your job is to follow him and take him down along with his compatriots and recover the nukes.

Although the story runs a tad thin in some places, the graphics are stellar. When you shoot someone in the arm, you really hit their arm, and laugh at them as gibblets (individual body parts) fly all over. What also makes this game great is that the AI, which is usually what makes or breaks a game like this, is beautiful. When you're shooting a guy and aiming for his upper body, he will duck or hide near the adjacent wall, only to peer out and take a couple of quick shots.

The downsides: some missions can get real tough real fast, and with a multitude of badies who all have itchy trigger fingers, one level can go from being a half-life like map with few enemies to a UT type map with a deathmatch like feel to it. However, you got the guns, use'em.

Hardware: Plain an simple, you must have an accelerator card to play this game. The graphics do not look nearly as good with only software rendering. Besides you get to see more of the blood that way. Also the higher resolutions can quickly chew on the memory card so it's best to have a computer with a fast cpu. IF you have a computer lower than 300 Mhz, don't expect the card to make up the difference. The sound in this game is very good. Each gun has it's own firing sound which seperates it from its bretheren and the music, that rockish techno beat stuff can really get your heart pumping. But it get's even crazier when you turn it off. Recommend that you have a good sound card if you want to hear all the bells and whistles.

What else is there to say: If you don't like blood, DON'T GET THIS GAME, it's right up there with Kingpin level on the gore factor. Also, don't expect much replay value, like most regular shootem up's (not including Half-Life) once it's beat, it's shelfed.

The Highs: Great graphics, AI system is strong, very detailed locals, and the wonderful sniper rifle...ooo!

The Lows: They don't move their mouths, low replay value, didn't get much from Multiplayer, No action plot will ever beat that of Half-Life.

What does it all mean: If you have all the rambo movies, love continuous action, are a gun freak, and just love action games, there is none better. If you're looking for replay and multiplayer value, stick to Half-Life and Unreal Tournament.

Revuman, Peace!

Spectacular Game... If you can run it

Soldier of Fortune is an engrossing, realistic, violent, and ultimately completely satifying FPS. While the gameplay itself offers little in the way of new ideas, it still proves to be a very fine example of the genre.

What raises the bar, however, is the exceptional detail provided by the modified Quake II engine which utilizes the GHOUL system for pinpointing 26 areas on the enemies' bodies for each of which there is a different reaction. A gut shot will cause intestines to spill out, a small caliber head wound will eject part of the brain, and shots to several areas on the arms and legs will causes the extremities to detach. The game is not for the faint of heart but does provide a password lock for gore. The absence of gore makes the game no less entertaining, but does detract from the uniqueness.

The only reason this game does not deserve five stars stems from the misleading system requirements. Unless you have a 400 or 500mhz processor and a darned good graphics card don't expect results to be pretty or fast-paced(the 233mhz on the box is bare minimum and lags often even at low detail settings.)

That said, if you can run it and don't mind some gratuitous violence this is one great game.

I'm not really a fan of games like Quake, but I'd heard so muchabout SoF that I HAD to download the demo (90MB!). Once installed itBLEW me away. Great graphics, great sound, it had everything I was looking for. There's one minor thing I don't like about SoF, and that's the Multiplayer Option, the servers are too slow. And sometimes the loading takes really long. But if you're looking for a great game, buy it. And I'm sure Raven or Activision will solve the MultiPlayer problem soon. So all I can say is, BUY THIS GAME :)

This is a First person Shooter, and I love it.

First thing I have to say is Everyone who mentions Half Life in a review is a moron. I admit that game is good but if you like it so much what are you doing playing a new game. Sorry if this offends you but this game is not supposed to be Half Life. Thank you.

Second I love this game. The Graphics and the story is pretty good. The GHOUL system is great because you can shoot different parts of the body. I love when I play games and shooting a guy in the head will cause more damage then a shot in the arm. that is just common sense. but what if I shoot them in the foot? they will still be hurt and probably hop around like mad in Real Life as in This game.

The Story is great. you have to see it to understand, but yes it is the usual mad guy who wants to blow up the world. The Problem is that that story is used alot in HollyWood but not nearly enough in Games.

The Sound is ok. But nothing special.

And Finally The gameplay makes you feel like A soldier of Fortune, not a Infinate strength grunt. You play this game alone, there is no help from a partner (in the Single player). Also you can have only a number of Guns in your back pack and a number of items. Plus there are many different factors on the skill levels. each level is progressivly harder. And then there is the Sound issue. If you shoot rockets at everyone won't they notice? well not in most games. but in the hardest two difficulties you will notice you have to try to be quiet (which is hard but possible) That is what makes this game, the innovation in Gameplay. Look beyond the Blood and see innovation which have never been done before....thanks.

Just plain fun!

Okay, let's cut the hype. This ain't Half-Life. Comparing this game to Half-Life is ludicrous. If this game is hamburger, then Half-Life is fillet mignon.

That said, it is an utterly fun game to play. Aside from the gore-point system, there really isn't much innovation in the game, but what it does do -- which is to provide a fun diversion where you blow the living **** out of enemies -- it does really well.

And don't get suckered into believing that this is a realistic shooter like Rouge Spear or SWAT 3. It isn't. Sure, your enemies can get killed by a well placed bullet to the head, but you, personally, walk around as through you were wearing an invisible tank. And that's just fine, because realism isn't what this game is about. This game is about being some sort of latter-day Rambo. On that level, it delivers in spades.

And yes, the game IS intended for mature audiences. And mature, as always, means having the sort of "maturity" where you smirk everytime you take some poor animated saps leg off at the hip. In otherwords, it's a game for the demented teenager that resides in (at least some of) us.

So yeah: but it, play it, have fun. It ain't fillet mignon, but sometimes you're just in the mood for some quick and cheap junk food.

GAME OF A LIFETIME

This is a truly terrific game. It's graphic description of combat violence is what makes it such a great game. Though the violence is too graphic in some situations, it is still a fun game to play because it is real. No demons, aliens, or anything like that. It is people vs. people. Realistic weapons and items along with great AI for the enemies makes this my GAME OF A LIFETIME. If you're considering buying this game for yourself or for another, buy it. The parental lock makes it so the player can still play this realistic game without all of the carnage included. John Mullins is God

SoF is by far the greatest 3D shooter to come out since Half-Life. No 3D shooter even comes close to beating it out except for the already mentioned Half-Life. The game plunges you right into the action, you don't have any long introduction or anything, you bust out into the sewers and blow the snot out of a New York subway gang.

The violence level in this game is a major plus. You can blast your enemies anywhere and they will do anything from having their heads explode to grabbing their manhood and moaning, all in an extremely realistic manner. They even limp around if shot in the leg, which was a really cool effect considering that that is how it should be. Then if you shoot them in the arms or legs with a big weapon, they will no longer be attached to the enemies torso. Unforunately, gibbing left something to be desired, but it is made up for with the exit wounds!

The multiplayer game is SLOW, and the long load times make this a game that surely is not for the multiplayer fanatic. The single player game is on the edge of perfection. While not as deep as Half-Life, this is a very realistic story about 4 missing nukes and a personal vendetta that really seems to be at the end but then you are in a whole new level, with a long load time as usual, but it is well worth it!

Overall, this is a game that no gamer should be without. This game truly shines in single player and if you ever get into multiplayer after the load times, the realistic deathmatch mode is great.
