What most shooter games aspire to be!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

I must say that all the other first person shooter games get lost in the wrong details. Compared to Rogue Spear or Special forces, this game is what shooters should be about: Blowing bad guys away. However, keep in mind that this game should not be given to the youngsters unless you install the violence controls. If you don't wallow in minutae that seems to be the trend, you will love this game for what its for: entertaining carnage. I must say that the only downside is that it is a monster on your hard drive. Be prepared to give up 500mb of space at least!

Modern Day Quake---real original (not!!!)

This is one of the worse games ever. It is nothing but a modern day quake, full of blood, powerful weapons, and "reloading." IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A RAINBOW SIX OR DELTA FORCE TYPE GAME THIS IS NOT IT!!! This game has no tactics except firing first. There are tons of "hidden" B.S. passage-ways and other items which make this nothing more than a quake or doom with modern weapons. I found this to be a very poor excuse for what was advertised.

A good first person shooter

i don't know why everyone claims this game is gory - it's not much different than any other shooter. Basically, this game is what you'd expect - it's a newer shooter than some, so it took all the best parts of those and added a few, nicer things. Nothing radically different - it's just a nice, incrementally better shooter.

Not quite in the same league as Half Life

Soldier of Fortune is a smart, graphically good looking and easy to get into game but doesn't quite come up to the masterpiece that is Half Life. It's not as smooth and the levels are too short to get completely involved in the atmosphere of a particular location.

It's more like the old "Operation Wolf" arcade came but in first person. The most enjoyable part is being able to use the sniper rifle to dispatch baddies from a distance is great fun.

The best part of the game is the variety in the locations. You start off in New York, move onto a train traversing Russia at night, end up in Kosovo. There's a consistent plot between each scene too.

Small downside on the speed of your machine. Having the video card is okay but the 22KHZ 16-bit sound can be really jerky on a slower machine (Celeron 300A) with just a normal sound card. Which is a shame because the dynamic music really adds to the atmosphere.

The violence isn't *that* bad really!

Good Game, Bad Speed

So, your thinking of buying SoF! Big mistake unless you have a 500mgh Pentium Prossessor. I'm informing you to this because I too was exited about buying this game. I love buying thimgs from amazon.com, and I thought "of course this is good". I was wrong! The system requirements stated 200 pentium or higher. I met all the requirerments and still when I got SoF home it paused every minute. I couldn't even enjoy the things the "Good" reviews said, because all that was pointless with the SoF speed! Am I being too harsh? I don't think so! Now, I have a SoG Cd Lying on the floor, possibly never to be used again. Remember, Im not saying that SoF isn't good for everyone. It is ezellent if your computer can handle it. I recomend Pentum (or Athalon) 500mgz. Sincerely The Critic

This is the best. Blow arms, legs, heads, and you know whats off. This is a great shooter. There is no better action 1st person shooter on the market thats for sure. Though it does lack a good overall story line, and is a fairly easy and short game to beat its still a whole lot of fun. Lots of weapons and enemys and inocents too. Though your not supposed to shoot civies I like this game because unlike rogue spear you dont fail the mission for shooting them. Overall I give SOF 6 Stars this is one to have!

Excellent piece of gaming!

Ugh. I think I'm going to be sick. I mean REALLY sick, as in blowing chunks all over the toilet sick. Why? I just got back from a round of Soldier of Fortune, on my PC. While the whole "modern mercenary shooter" feel is original and somewhat fun, this game is just disgusting. It has tested my commitment to defend violent video games. You thought Quake was gross? Half-Life made you squeamish? Then do NOT check out this game. Why is this game such a hit? Poor story, stupid looking enemies, a handful of ethnic classes to mow down at your pleasure (the KKK would especially like the Sudan level), and a bunch of "classic" blood-boiling "puzzles" (Walk into room, mow down enemies, find switch, hit switch, walk out of room, mow down enemies in hallway, walk into previously closed door, now open and spilling out enemies, mow them down, walk through door, etc.) It's simple what makes this game sell. Violence. While Half-Life was backed by a great story and creepy atmospheres, and Quake had a weird pseudo-satanic feel to it and a pulse-pounding style of gameplay that made it great fun to play, Soldier of Fortune has violence. That's it. I swear, the writers for this game were probably upset because they had to take fifteen minutes to slap together a crappy plot when they could've been thinking of more sick gruesome ways to push the envelope. These include: Heads exploding completely, heads exploding into raggedy chunks of flesh, intestines spilling out, backs of heads torn open like a xmas present, groin shots (which I'll admit, are sometimes funny), arms getting blown off, legs getting blown off, ALL limbs getting blown off (including head) before the body hits the ground. Keep in mind that whenever you do any of these the enemies scream with agony as they spurt blood like a supersoaker. It's just plain DISTURBING. Despite all this, the violence isn't the problem, it's the violence coupled with lack of a story that makes this game just plain bad. If they made a Saving Private Ryan type FPS with this kind of engine and limb-loss programs, it could be very fun. Think of it: the ramp in front of you hits the sand and you and the other 50 grunts crammed into the transport spill out onto Normandy Beach. Machine gun fire zings through the air, and you look over just in time to see the transport to the left of you explode from a direct mortar hit. Well, for those of you who think that kind of game would kick ass, it's time to start crying, because for now all we have is crap-ass Soldier of Fortune. *sob*.

Awesome! Very educational. Tastes good. Smells like fresh roses on a rainy day. This is the best first person shooter since Half-Life! The second level is really nasty. this is still a great game. I like to smell paint. -Tom, John
