This game had awesome potential but i think they rushed the development. Unlike most MMORPG's, all people are human in this. They make up for this by having 2 classes u can be at a time. (You can change your second class about 3/4 through the game.) I do not have a credit card so I bought this over World of Warcraft because this game doesn't ask fo any personal information except your email address. At this point of the games surreal economy everything costs lots of gold pieces (the currency) so it encourages farming (going out by yourself and killing for no point except getting rare items and gold). The developers are working on this but it is still a problem.

I think this is the best PvP MMO in a really long time. However, it will take lots of time to get any good items for your PvP character because they are rare and expensive when you unlock them in a rpg character.

If you plan on wasting a lot of time on an MMORPG over the summer or something, just buy a different World of Warcraft. I beat this game in under a month, my first character, in 90 hours where i had no idea what i was doing.

For the casual gam person this is definitley for you because of the no monthly charge.

BTW to stingy adults buying this: the gaming community is very immature as many pre-adolescents bought this because they couldn't afford any other MMORPG!!!

Massive Multiplayer Online Game with no monthly fee. Great graphics which pale in comparison to the incredible gameplay. Much like chess. Simple to learn. A long while to master it. It's far far funner as well.

Developed by the top programmers that left Blizzard who were responsible for StarCraft and the Diablo series of games it transcends the limitations of both.

This game transcends old boundaries which is why I would rate it six stars. I played the free alpha preview a couple months back and it was better than most games at full release. It truly is wondrous.

Free trial Oct 29-31. The client is small enough to download with a modem and is actually not horrifyingly annoying at that speed as it's somehow somewhat small. Better if you have faster access of course.

If you preorder the game you can participate in their free beta events the first weekend of each month.

They will have nonmandatory expansions released twice a year or so.

Guild Wars is my favorite game. I have logged over1400hours in 3 months. HOWEVER, I was scammed into buying a used copy for my third account. After two weeks without my knowledge, Arena.net transfer back the ownership to the original owner because the seller and original owner requested them to do so. I had done nothing to deserve this except leave my guild -it was supposed to be amicable. The Arena.net people say they do not honor used account transfers. Therefore, BUYER BEWARE. You could lose the use of the account and all your stuff with absolutely NO WARNING! Arena.net, the makers of Guild Wars, do not care IF YOU CAN PROVE LEGITIMATE PURCHASE OR NOT. PLEASE DO NOT SUFFER MY FATE. Do noT buy used. I am also aware now that what happened to me was not an isolated incident. Please spread the word. Thank you.

Before I star I'm going to state that the whole reason I had started this review was because of I. B. Cooper's review. It was nearly a complete lie! He has obviously not even gotten out of the starting area. There ARE dwarves, there ARE cities, more than 30, and the story line is NOT depressing until once you get into the mountains. The game picks up with you being any one profession (Elementist, Warrior, Ranger, Mesmer, Monk, or Necromancer) and then you can choose a secondary profession to which allows you to use another profession's skills. While you are doing this you are in a time called "pre-searing". After you have gone through this "tutorial land" you are transported two years into the future where the enemy, Char, have attacked and your home is destroyed. You slowly pick up a skills and a guild which can help you. You progress into the Shiverpeak Mountains where there ARE dwarves. After you move through there you land in Kryta where you find the White Mantle, an army who controls most of that area and helps you through. The game gets about twice as long as that including about 20 missions and hundreds of side quests. There are so many variables in here down to the color of you 100 gold armor or 15,000 gold armor, ranging from the color pink, to black. There are staffs, rods, axes, canes, hammers, swords, and bows of every kind going from a Fiery Dragon Sword to a Life Stealing Chaos Axe. That's not all! It ranges from PvE(player vs Enviroment) to PvP (player vs. player). The PvE lets you combat LOTS of different races of enemies including dwarves, undead, dragons, scorpians, and minotaurs of all levels. In the PvP you can have a guild battle where you go with your guild into battle with another guild. In PvP there is also the Hall of Heros (HoH) where there is a constant tournament to earn the favor of the "gods". Having favor of the gods allows you to go into the Underworld or Fissure of Woe. Combined together the Underworld and Fissure of Woe make a map as bigger than the starting zone. This game is very amazing and fun. I would recommend this to any person of any age as I have seen kids at the age of 8 play to adults at the age of 55 play! I never like any RPGs(Role Playing Games) until i found this. You just need a guild to help explain things to get you started in the game. If you do get it and need help you can add me to your friends by the name "Fare Hangora". YOU MUST GET IT!

All the great things about MMO's with out the monthly fee

This company has finally done what needed to be done to online gaming for a long time. They have provided a quality product with out a monthly fee.

I started playing right when the game first hit the shelves and since then I havent noticed any substantial slow down or anything that would detract from the game.

This game is a great experience, its easy to learn and you are not always looking over your shoulder for those PK (player killers) players that just want to spoil the game for everyone.

the combat system is top notch alowing for dodgeing, archery, magic and sword and sheild all in one package.

I would definatly recomend buying this game if you are even remotly intrested in MMO's (Masive Mult-player Online games)

I just finished the second short beta on this game and it looks very promising. It's improved over the first beta. The graphics are outstanding, no question about it. Because it's a beta, I'm impressed all around and giving 5 stars.

I have these concerns that I hope are addressed in the final shipped product:

1. The camera manipulation took some getting used to which isn't a big deal, but there seem to be a few non-intuitive aspects such as camera drift after running using the mouse. Perhaps I missed the control to deactivate this but I don't think so. It would be better if the camera remained stationary unless specifically moved by the player. I have always felt that one draw-back of full 3D games is non-intuitive camera controls. I'm not saying GW has non-intuitive controls, but I think there's a little room for improvement.

2. The number/frequency of items dropped by creatures may not be enough to maintain interest for some players. There are players who like that "cornucopia of items" you see in games like Diablo II when you kill a monster. It does add to addictiveness, a lot. It may be worth considering increasing this. The final product may have other game aspects that offset this and a few days on a beta perhaps isn't enough to say definitively how it will play out, but it's something to consider.

3. The monsters shouldn't appear on the mini-map so far ahead (i.e. prior to encounter). It detracts from the exploration side of the game a bit. Have them appear and stay on the mini once they have been encountered, not before.

4. Monsters don't stand out enough from the background. Even at great distance, they should be more apparent. The colors between background and monsters have this chameleon effect and make them visually difficult to pick out sometimes. I'm not sure what to do about something like this but I did notice it quite a lot.

5. The frequency of monsters seems a bit low and leveling seems a bit slow at lower levels. These two may be related. While the world is beautiful and really well done, combat is where it's at to keep people coming back. The combat needs to happen more often. This may address my concern with the leveling.

6. Combat seems a tad slow-paced. Again, this may very well be a non-issue with the final game. I'm biased to an extent in that I think a click-fest is just fine. Fast paced combat sequences are preferable in my opinion, though perhaps not in the opinion of others. With a game like Diablo II at one end and Never Winter Nights on the other, Guild Wars seems to occupy a place in-between, but leaning toward NWN. I would recommend leaning more toward Diablo II a bit in the "fast-paced" area of actual combat.

These are post-beta observations and suggestions. The game looks fantastic. I'll be buying the final version for sure. A free on-line game is definitely a superior business model to the monthly payment style, so kudos to that aspect.

MMPORG without the dweeb factor

Guild Wars is the first of the MMORPG to eliminate most of my complaints about the form. First of all there is no monthly fee, a huge plus if you are like me and the ammount of time you have for playing any gien week veries greatly.

Secondly the other issue I have with a lot of MMORPG is the other players, Guild wars stops a lot of the annoying behaviour of players from other games. When on a mission you only see players in your party, but you can see and interact with all the other players in towns & outposts. There is no stealing from other players and if you wish to fight other humans on line you can do so in the arena.

There is a promise of more content modules being avilable in the future, but if you want to still play in the existing areas you will not be forced to buy the updates to play.

This is truly the best MMORPG to ever be made. This is because first of all it is free after u buy it. No annoying monthly fees like WOW or everquest. Think about it with WOW and everquest you aren't just spending $50 on the game. You are spending much more than that. Those games could come out to cost a couple hundred dollars if u play them for a while. Having no monthly fee is huge. Also there is so much depth to guild wars and yet, it is so simple to use. Spells are as easy as point and click same with attacking. After a day of playing the game you will know exactly how it works and feel that you know everything. Another thing Like about this game is the portals. Games like WOW have you wandering from place to place. If you are in one city and your friend is in another you have to walk to the city he is in. In guild wars if your friend is in one city and you are in another and you want to play with each other you can just warp there. Its as easy going to the map and saying where you want to go. Also when out in the wild you only see who is in your party. That's good because certain areas don't become clogged with people. In the towns and cities there is all the people. If i have any complaint it is the physics. You can't jump off of acliff or slid down a steep hill. That can be bad because if you are running and you are stuck because you are on a short cliff consider yourself dead. Which leads me to my next thing. This is not a game for lone wolves. You cannot go out by yourself against a lot of monsters and expect to survive. You are pretty much unable to hold your own against large groups of enemies like in diablo and other games . I like this because it encourages you to form parties which is more fun. All in all this is a great game. If you don't like MMORPGS try this one you may find you like it. If you do like them you won't be dissapointed.

If you love MMORPGs, then this is certainly the game for you. The player character is widely customizable and the gaming environment is massive in size.

The reason I rated the game lower is because, unless you have a group of friends you always play with, you spend too much time trying to find a party to play with. Then, you can't always trust them not to leave you behind or share the loot.

If gaming companies came out with a single player (with or without Net play available) RPG with the huge customizability of the player character and the massive size of the playing environment - well, I'd buy it.

When you look back at some of the first MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games) it's incredible to see how far they've come along. There really wasn't too much hype coming from the release of this game, but I can assure you Guild Wars, although it shares many qualities of a fantasy online RPG, distinguishes itself from others. With a unique skill system, beautiful graphics, a dual profession system, and for the first time, no monthly fee, this game was almost made to be a sure hit. The game starts you off in the city of Ascalon, pressed by hard times by the war against the ferocious creatures known as the Charr. Your hero must rise to the challenge of opposing these creatures and save your homeland from complete destruction; however, your journey takes you outside of the realm of Ascalon where you'll visit neighboring cities, explore vast jungles, and even walk Hell's Precipice! The storyline itself is riveting from start to finish, I never found myself not wanting to know more as the game progressed. Intricate cutscenes and storyline missions keep you wanting more. One of the game's most unique systems is how you can choose one primary class (warrior, necromancer, monk, ranger, elementalist, or mesmer) as well as possess the skills of a secondary class from the above list. Although you must use the same armor as your base class, it gives the game just that much more depth. With over 150 skills per profession, the character build possibilites seem almost endless. However, each player can only limit themselves to the use of 8 skills at a time, which provides a more strategic side to this RPG. The game world itself is gorgeous, characters are presented in high detail the lush land of Tyria is one you'll enjoy exploring. Ah, that reminds me, you'll be able to venture with allies to your chosen destinations. You begin only being able to venture with three other teammates but as the game progresses and becomes more difficult you can team up with up to 7 other allies; furthermore, there is also the option of using henchmen at no hiring fee. Now, crossing over to the PvP part of the game. It's just as encouraging to play as the PvE portion of the game is. It's fast, high action scenarios cause you to work cooperatively with your teammates. I won't get too much into that part of the game as there's lots to learn about it, but much of the style of play is introduced in the PvE portion of the game. If you're a newcomer to MMORPGs, here's one you might as well give a shot, with no monthly fee there's no real necessary attachment to it, for longtime MMORPG fans here's a game that delivers, it does a fantastic job at putting out all the stops to win you over, although it's not perfect, it sure does it's best to become so.

A bit about the story...

"Ascalon is at war, fighting the Charr invading from the North. The fight is not going well, but the Great Northern Wall always protects Ascalon from the worst of the threat. However, the Charr find a way past the wall, and increase their attacks. It is in this setting the player begins a new character and completes initial training quests."
