a very good game that doesn't cost much

I had the same feelings about this game as starcrossedlady, but I started playing because it was cheaper and to try it out. The beginning of Prophecies is a bit different then the later stages, so if you are bored or don't think it's fun in the beginning, keep playing until you level up a bit more and/or reach later stages of the game. I really like the fact that are so many different aspects of the game--guilds are/can be just a tiny part of it. Armor, pets, and weapons can all be customized and unique (okay the pets can't be customized but you can have unique pets). There are specialists that focus on different areas like farming, and a very large variety of skills--some can only be found on bosses (where you have to "cap" or capture them), or in certain towns. The two bad things I found were that when I only had Prophecies, (the original, stand alone product), I felt like I needed Factions/Nightfall to complete my Guild Wars experience. There are some things that are found in Factions/Nightfall that will help your characters, like extra skills, different armor sets (just to look different), and heros, which level up with you and are better than the NPCs that are standard at towns. Also, there are a lot of immature people that play, but that is not the fault of the game--I found that there was a lot of kids age 8-15 playing. In harder areas of the game you need to have communication and cooperation with all the members of your party, and one of the six or eight players could ruin it for the whole team.
Overall I think the game is really good esp for people that want a "full" gaming experience.

This game offers user friendly commands and "easy to get into" atmosphere. The best of all, the game has a built-in guide to help you to move the story along. I know, some people would say "What is a point playing an RPG game if you cannot explore yourself? That is fun of the game." That is understandable, I like to help people who still like playing with other people online, but do not have a lot of time like before. Yet, still achieve some kind of accomplishment each day. I felt this game delivers this aspect. The graphics are very nice. The sounds are good as well, but not the best I have heard. The music is excellent to provide that "Fantasy-like" feeling.
I am a gamer on consoles and pc for a long time now. As I get older, I get more "time concious" because of work and family and less time for myself. I cannot play online games that require too much exploring with no sense of direction anymore (ex. Everquest and WoW)

Free online and great fun

First of all, yes the online play will be free! Big thanks to these people, the price of paying for an online game subscription is ridiculous.
This is a review of the october world preview.
The graphics were decent and I had no trouble playing it with a simple GFX5200/ATI9000 on medium to high detail.
I tried various classes and combination of classes for 3 hours each, I think there is still some power balancing to be done. There were a few bugs but it was good enough for a beta preview to be almost at a perfectly playable level. The main drawback was the lack of a structured systyem to explain what to do and where to go for a quest. The crafting system was interesting and I like the spell system too.
I found that leveling was much to quick for a game which allows you only to get to level 20. Within 3 hours I could easily go from lvl 15 to 17.
Overall I am preording this game.

Things I love most about Guild Wars is:

1) Free online gaming (wow, what a concept).
2) competitive but fair gameplay--the "loot" is equally split among the party so no one will feel bad about not having what they want; or argue over items.
3) players are quite friendly and eager to help "newbies"; unlike some OTHER online games.
4) easy to use in game controls (mostly)
5) combat, quests become tougher as you get higher in levels.
6) you can play at your own leisure, solo (with henchmen or heroes) or with friends.
7) though complex, the one can pick up the game quick.
(for instance, there's a lot of in-game things not explained in manuals liek crafting, salaving parts. You either experiment, or ask other players for help).
8) there's always something new to do/discover even at level 20.
9) the professions seem equal in strength and weaknesses (through observation mostly, I have yet to advance the other characters)/
10) it's a richly developed world where cooperative play is fun.

things I don't like about it? minor, very minor.

sometimes the camera angles get on my nerves.
the music/sound quality isn't so good. I often have my computer playing other music while I play.
gameplay does get somewhat recycled, though the replay factor is high. It's not boring, like others. It does become more challenging.
sometimes the map doesn't show the correct area on which the final destination of reward is.
Missions don't always tell players where they need to go--very frustrating. One can spend an idiotic amount of time just running in circles. [though, that's probably just me]
okay, someone else brought this up...the henchmen could be a little stupid. They don't use their skills as often as I like (for example, the healer monk doesn't heal often enough).
Though this game is built on how you use your skills, good items help tremendously. The monsters seem to have better skills...(sometimes). I looked it up, Life Syphon doesn't seem to be a skill/spell players can capture or use. (though, I have yet to discover this).

minor quibbles for a terrific game.

other than that? It's a fantastic game to which I will buy the add-ons.

Plan on not doing anything for the first few weeks you own this game...

There is only one word that can sum up this game. Endless. There is no possible way that anyone could ever run out of things to do. Sure, I've only had the game for about 2 weeks and I've sacrificed sleep, work, school, chores, and spending quality time with my wife and family... and sure, that might be reason enough to NOT buy this game... BUT OH MY LORD! This game is sooooo awesome. "Highly Addictive" would be an understatement. After spending time with the family, I typically play from about 10:00 PM to 4:30 AM... But I'm finally starting to get back to normal or at least off my initial high from this game; and I can now sleep at night after only a few hours of play time (1:00 AM).

I have only one or two negative things to say about this game. And from the 5 star review you can see that they are minor issues. First the ability to craft items is limited. Second, the guild halls that are available are not customizable (I think they're fixing this in the upgrade version, however).

If you've played games like Starwars Galaxies (I have) there are more in-game things you can do as far as crafting items or even building homes and guild halls... In my opinion, it saddens me to see that this game lacks the ability to "alter" the world outside the major cities. The reason for this is clear, however, when you leave a town or an outpost in this game, you will never bump into other players (unless you left with them in a group). The areas surrounding cities are all run on a per-group/person basis. This allows for no interference of quests and the in-game storyline.

I cannot recommend this game more -- the price you pay for any online game should be all you ever have to pay. The fact that guild wars allows you to play online with such amazing graphics, with any friends from around the world is truly -- awesome. I convinced 5 of my friends to join this game with me *and now they're addicted* and I'm convincing more people by the day. I hope I convinced you.

I could spend days just wandering the first level, which is before the big attack. The graphics are awsome. Considering there are no online fees, it is a fabulous bargain.

The first level can be played with minimal fighting and lots of interaction, or it can include lots of fighting. Moving on to the second level increases the risk and fighting.

This is a game of groups, so it helps if you can meet up with others with whom to explore and fight.

Number one....make sure your computer meets the requirements to run this game. This isn't for your old Compaq with Windows98. Tried to run it on a Dell computer(2002) with on board graphics, but constantly got the blue screen of death. We are now running it on a Pentium3 with 512 megs of ram, and a GeForce 4 video card. This met the minimum requirements of the game and it has performed well. The kids like it and that's really what counts. No monthly fee to play. I can't comment on any aspects of the game but like I said....the kids are playing it daily.

Guild Wars takes MMO to a new level. If you think this game is not free, you are terribly wrong. This not as tedious as some MMOs, for example you can be killing the same **** chicken over and over again just trying to level up, this game has plenty of enemies so you can't just keep on killing the same thing over and over again. There are a good amount of professions to choose from. Once you play for about 5min-10min you get to choose a second profession, which is awesome since you dont have choose one profession and stick with it. PVP on this game is at its best. You get to choose between PVP or PVC (Player VS Character) as I like to call it. The difference is that in PVC you fight for your country literally the country you live in. The country is always shown. One pretty unique is you get to have a guild. The graphics are great and enviroments are beautiful. This game is awesome and breaks the boundaries of what MMO is even though there is one thing I didn't like, this game is still truly amazing.

Good: This game is free
You get to make your own guild
Graphics are gorgeous
No tedious creature killing
Fun to level up
PVP and PVC is awesome
Good amount of professions

Bad: 20 is the maximum level!

A Great Game for MMORPG Lovers!

This game is really great.

I have played various MMORPGs since 1998 and I will not lie to you by saying that the Guildwars is the best game of them all (in my opinion, Everquest was the all time winner), but this one should be certainly listed among the greatest MMORPGs. The idea is revolutionary. MMORPGs with no monthly-payments! This idea alone lures many gamers, including me, because I did not want to pay hundreds of dollars on the game that I might not have a chance to play intensively. Also, the game has many advantages that all great MMORPGs share. The game has, so far, no hacks/"trainers" like old Diablo I & II, Neverwinter Nights (NOT MMORPGs) were swarmed with (I hated them!). So with no one carrying around godly plates and godly weapons, you can actually enjoy growing the characters till their limit levels (lvl20). and some people actually profit from "farming" and then selling items on the ebay. Also, the idea of ability to re-assign attribute points at anytime is greatly favorable in the game because you don't have to regret later on for your character's weaknesses.
Also, NCSoft, just like other great companies that hosted UO, WOW, EQ, AC, etc, prepares a various events during some special holidays by modifying the gaming environment and handing out special collectible items. (treat or trick candy, jack-o-lantern helm given out during the halloween and some more on christmas and more coming!)

Enough said, there are still few downsides on this game.
1) The game is broken into many tiny zones and you cannot actually see other people (unless grouped) in the hunting zones. This means that you will, at maximum, see only about 8 other people in the hunting zone. So if you want a social life in MMORGs, this is not that good game to go with, because of this limitation.
2) You can only level up to 20, which takes only about 2-3 days if you play intensively. Most of MMORGs take years of playing to be a high lvls... this one is not. Everybody is lvl 20 at the end.
3) There isn't that many inventory of weapons, armors, and etc. Although # of spells are more than enough, there that many intriguing items. Most best items that you can find during the game could be easily gained by just doing a simple manufacturing by NPCs (easy easy). So, if you want a cool armor/weapon, this game is not that much of graphical.

However, don't weigh these downsides too much. The biggest advantage of this game, no free subscription fee, outweighs them all.

If you are young and don't have a constant income, or if you don't want to pay monthly bills on games because your girlfriends/boyfriends/parents/grandparents might think that it is the stupidest way to spend money,,(or simply poor),,,,,, GET THIS GAME!
However, if you are rich rich and have a super computer that can run other MMORPGs with no problems, you should consider getting other games.
So this game is for light-gamers and for budget-gamers in my humble opinion. just like my current self.

If you like cheating this game is not for you. No hacks, and very very very little lag.
