Fantastic first person shooter

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 5

I don't know what systems people are running this game with. I have a measly 350 PII 96MB ram & a Voodoo 2 card, and I experience no problems, no choppiness, no net lag. All these people with their 600 PIII's need to check their machines out. On the other hand, this game is the most fun addictive 1st person shooter I have ever played. The AI on the 'bots is just terrific. The level designs are great, the weapons are way cool. Get this game at once.

State of the art coding. BRILLIANT GAME.

I have never spend much time playing games, until I started playing UT. This game is now my personal record, I have been playing it for months, I bought hardware just for it, I installed ISDN just to get better pings. And I didn't even play much. Yes, it is that good. :) Unreal Tournament has smooth character models, stunning environments and wonderfully detailed levels that just lay waste to the competition. (That includes Quake 3). The audio in UT is spectacular. The sound of guns firing all over the place will have you on the edge of your seat.Your teammates also have excellent voice quality. After you give your orders to them they talk to one another about the orders. They also do a good job bragging about how they killed an opponent. Not at all repetitive like Q3's. The AI is my personal favorite area. Artificial Intelligence is an important factor to any game. No one wants to play a game with ridiculously idiotic opponents or even too hard. Just when you think the bots could not be any smarter, they are! The enemy bots have some wonderfully smart patterns.Your team can occasionally win the game without you having to do anything. Now that's a good AI. Some things they can do is group together and attack in formations, give warning when they see enemies and when they neutralize the enemy; they do a nicely choreographed victory dance. UT brutally kills the competition in IA, it completely humilliates games like Daikatana and Quake 3 whose braindead bots are sometimes quite pathetic. Multiplayer code is extremely solid and lag-free if you find a decent server and have a reasonable connection (Very good with 56k, perfect with ISDN or cable). You can even enjoy it with a 28.8 modem. The unique double-action weapons are also excellent. You have lots of flexibility, again, I have to compare it to Q3's boring and much more limited weapons.

A good game needs to merge its elements into one seamless experience. A game with excellent graphics, sound, AI, and multiplayer will surely be fun to play; and Unreal Tournament offers it all! Epic has done a great job merging all the game elements into one fantastic gaming session;

You need reasonably fast hardware, (I personaly have a Celeron@450, 128 MB and a Voodoo 3 3k and it runs very smoothly).

This is simply a brilliant piece of coding. If you even remotely enjoy these games, you will love it. Especially when you start playing with people in your area and your friends.

When it comes to which game you should use your hard earned money to buy, make it Unreal Tournament!

Chugs along fine on 'dated' systems..

I bought this with the intention of having another game that ran so-so on a system that was top of the line 2 years ago. What I got was a *finished* game, that ran fine on my pii@300, with 128 megs of ram and an old voodoo 2 card.

UT amazed me at what thought was put into the game; at all levels. From level design, to alternate modes of firing a weapon, to all the different types of gameplay available. But to top it off, the way it was presented out of the box. No problems getting sound or video drivers to work, no crashing. What a relief. It's almost like a *gasp* console video game.

Check out the game by all means. Nothing says fun like playing capture the flag in outer space.

My thoughts on UT vs. Q3

The graphics on Q3 seems to be slightly (reads very, very slightly; asymptotically so) superior than UT, but that is where the positive comparisons for Q3 stops. UT's map is a lot more creative (including such settings as a moving train, underwater base, and an old wooden ship), and the variety of options other than deathmatch (capture the flag, assult, etc.) puts Q3 to shame.

If you appreciate long lasting playability and can only buy one game in this genre, UT, I submitt, should be your choice.

Absolutely Fraggin' Amazing

Me and my freinds as a group of 3d shooter gamers got quake 3 and UT at the same time when they came out and played them on our network and against people on the internet. When we first got q3, we saw the levels looked incredibly neato, with smooth graphics. After admiring the levels for a little bit, we got into the gameplay, shot around a little, got bored with the generic kill-die-kill-die gameplay and the incredibly unappealing and usually ugly weapons that all had frustrating shortcomings, but once we switched to UT we had tons of fun and discussed why we liked it better. This is what we came up with: Instead of all the guns having a problem for balance, all of the UT weapons were sadistic, but were different in what way. It's hard to hate a UT weapon if you use it right. Also, the guns look cool. Who wouldnt want a shock rifle or rocket launcher from UT hanging on the wall? Most importantly, the variation of gameplay options, massive amount of available maps, and the nearly endless gameplay modifications and mutators make sure there is always something new to do in UT. In the interest of fairness, we always give new q3 downloads a try and see if anything is coming out on the q3 front, but we would pretty much have to be devout quake fanboys with cable modems not to say that UT won every last one of us over, beating out q3 hands down. Buy it, you will appreciate the leap forward in rocket launcher technology!

THE BEST FIRST PERSON SHOOTER... PERIOD.

HISTORY:

Since ID games invented this genre with Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, there have been many entries into this market that have proven to be unworthy contenders. While most games had impressive graphics (for their time), they lack in playablity.

For the longest time, one of games that stood out as achieving a balance between innovation and playability was Duke Nukem 3D. What made this game a multi-player frag feast was that besides having a unique style and great attitude, it had cool weapon set and almost perfect balance. This is almost the central component of a good first person shooter (FPS). What this led to in Duke Nukem was almost infinite frag variability and a whole lotta of fun...

Several years after that the action-game market remain without any new titles that captured the multiplayer crown from Duke Nukem, but then finally in the Winter of 1999 along games the new master of the FPS arena...

HAIL TO THE KING BABY!

Unreal Tournament is the new king of this genre. It has a perfect weapon set that is completely balanced. Unlike Quake, where the guy with the rocket launcher has traditionally had the upper hand, UT has some great frag alternatives like the now classic "head shot".

In the end this balance leads to better game play because it fosters equal opportunity fragging with everyone having a fair chance to kill, instead of just the guy with the biggest gun. Because as we know once has the RPG, he keeps the RPG for awhile, and that is inheritly unfair.

In addition the game has well designed, and well thought-out levels especially for deathmatch. UT also offers some great alternative multiplayer games including the awesome Capture the Flag.

So heres to Unreal Tournament, the best FPS, and in my humble opinion THE BEST GAME to come along in a long long time. I suppose it will reign supreme for awhile, until perhaps Duke Nukem Forever makes its long overdue appearance on the store shelfs.

P.S. Don't forget to download the latest patch from Epic games...and also the get the Bonus Pack 1, its got some great new levels and play options.

Having played everything from PONG to BALDUR'S GATE and owned everything from Atari 2600 to VIC20 to Commodore 64 to Amiga to Playstation to PC I know a great achievement in gaming when I see it. Unreal Tournament is quite an accomplishment for no other reason than stealing the thunder from Quake 3 Arena. It betters QUAKE in everything but graphics. It's a pretty close call in visuals too! Play it offline by yourself or go online and gun down a few strangers, either way it's one heck of a good time.

First person shooter (fps) is the name given to 3D games in which you are looking thru the player eyes. You see your weapon (and a big variety here) and the game world in front of you (and an amazing variety of levels here too). UT takes a cue from multiplayer-type games and brings human-like intelligence into your computer. The computer players act like real people so you don't even have to own a modem to enjoy the multiplayer experience. However, many fans of UT swear by it's multiplayer element, which I must say, is the best in the business. On or offline we're talking about a game that has claimed 2 of my mice (er, mouses...er, mices...oh bugger!).

Be sure to check the internet for fan sites full of downloadables. New levels, skins, etc. There are several official addons from the developers that are freely downloadable! These add new levels including some that were available only on the beta versions.

UT is a game you will return to again and again. Many of the levels I have played so much I know every nook and cranny! At the price being asked here you have no reason not to check out this masterpiece of gaming!

Hope to see you in my gunsights (virtual gunsights that is).

Who knew shoot-em-ups could be so much fun!

Okay, I'll admit it. I got a little left behind at some point. I never was real into the first-person shooters like Doom or Quake. I just thought they were somewhat mindless, and vastly preferred adventure and RPG type games that had good plots and didn't rely so much on quick fingers and killing people.

Well, I have to say, I've been converted by this game. I probably would never have even tried it had I not been surrounded by guys playing it at work. Didn't want to be left out, so installed it on my system, apologized ahead of time for my pitiful relexes, and jumped right in.

Was I ever surprised! The team play features make this so much more fun, and greatly help someone who is quite new to this genre. I love that you just respawn when you die, it makes it so much less frustrating for a new player to not have to keep starting over from the beginning. As anyone knows, learning HOW to play games often is a big hurdle, and can take away from the enjoyment of a game if it is made difficult enough that experienced players get a lot out of it. Unreal Tournament does a great job of giving you a game that many levels of players can enjoy at the same time. By playing with a team, it can help develop a new player even more, as your team members can take up the slack while you are learning the ropes, and help you out in terms of where to go...it helps so much to have someone to follow when you are trying to return the flag on a big, confusing map!

The single-player game is quite good, and I am now working my way up through that to improve my playing with the rest of the guys. The only one I'd complain about is Assault which really becomes too hard too fast for me to really be successful. But I imagine most players don't have a problem with it, and thankfully the bots are so good in this game, they often can handle the fight even without me.

The maps are gorgeous, and even better, there are lots of other maps out there to get. Other mods are great fun to play with, I particularly like playing with relics. I've become a real master at grabbing the skull and then going in and letting myself get killed (I'm good at getting killed) to take out a whole slew of enemies. Whether it's sitting in the sniper's nest and getting to hear that "GODLIKE" call, running in, grabbing the flag and making it back alive with 4 enemies after you, scoring an ultra kill, or what not, it's all great fun.

I did try internet play just for the heck of it, to see how it did over my yucky internet connection (I get maybe 28 kbps out in the country) and was pleasantly surprised. There were still a number of annoying pauses, but the game was still quite playable and I had the thrill of actually beating a rather good player in a one-on-one Capture the Flag. Consider me hooked!

As a graphic artist who works in 3d, I found that curiousity soon lead me towards 3d games. Upon picking up the demo for UT (which is AVAILABLE FOR FREE ON THE INTERNET) I was FLOORED by the way my computer which was set up primarily to run regular 2d graphics handled this game! From the moment I appeared in the game I could hear the crisp sound of the enemy running all around me in DOLBY SURROUND SOUND...I could hear as the spent shells fell to the ground and I could hear my team members shouting for orders...then...I decided to gamble on the online part of the game...I entered a multiplayer game and all I can say is I walked away shaking...it's the closest I've ever been to REAL war...everything from the graphics to the little things like how your team members can wave to you from afar made this game a keeper in my book. Another cool option is the ability to save your scores and rankings to compare against others in your local area (via internet) or against others throughout the world.

BUY THIS GAME....you shall NOT be disappointed.

(I give it a four simply because there's ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT IN ANY GAME)

The best game I have ever played!

Many people have put down just because fo their Quake-based bias. Not that all Quakers are but, it is often the case (although it has gone the other way as well) Some one said "Unreal Tournament, on the other hand, chugged even on 512x384 with lowest detail settings, and had choppy net play." which is HIGHLY unusual as I can run it in 800x600 at lightening speed on my horrible video card and p2 450 w/128RAM. and netplay is EXTREMELY fast even on my horrible ISP/56kmodem. The modes and levels are excellent and highly original. finding secrets is somewhat challenging but not especially and quite a treat. the shield belt in DMGalleon for instance. All in all an excellent game
