Another great Unreal game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

I will just be brief. My system specs area 300mhz pent2, 160 megs ram, Voodoo3 3000, 40kbs internet connection. The game has excellent graphics and gameplay. The diffrent types of games are a refreshing change to the usual capture the flag and deathmatch. I think you will find the "assault" game great. My average ping times are around 250, so they got the code right this time. If you are a fps fan and like games like "Tribes" where team play is important, you will like this one. Can't compare it to "Quake", because I have never played Quake before. There is no need to with this game.

Totally Unreal!

This game is incredible. There are so many different skin pages to choose, it hurts! The weapons are all either new or souped up from Unreal, like the IMPACT Hammer and the Redeemer. This game is the ultimate experince in bringing down challenging AI opponents. You can even talk to your enemies!

Great single player, on-line via modem has flaws

Unreal Tournament satisfies gamers who like to frag and not think too much. It's a different goal than Half-Life, but UT beats the pants off Quake 3 Arena, it's competition in this category.

The addition of quality bots to UT makes all of the difference. It's easy to design a bot that can slaughter human players with ruthless digital efficiency, but that's no fun. UT's bots have different play styles and they can automatically change their skill level to match yours. In on-line games, this means that you can play to your heart's content without hanging around waiting for other human players to join the server.

UT looks great, and there are some terriffic map designs, including a speeding train and an oil rig. Again, much better map design than Quake 3.

On-line play is easy to join, but modem players are at a disadvantage on-line. You have to "lead" with your gun to compensate for lag, which makes simply running around an easy way for DSL and cable modem players to avoid being killed. Also, there are some maps that encourage all of the players to congregate in one large room with rocket launchers, which unfairly favours higher bandwidth connections at the expense of modem players.

I love playing UT both in the missions with bots, and on-line. It looks great, and the game is nicely balanced. It loses one star for on-line modem play limitations.

Best First-Person Shooter Made

Unreal Tournament had a very disappointing single-player mode, in that you rise up through a tournament which is identical to multiplayer mode, except the computer decides who you fight and where (and you can't cheat). Then, at the very end, you face Xan on a ship, and he is nearly impossible to beat.

That aside, UT stands as the greatest FPS game ever made for its multiplayer. You cannot cheat per se; rather you use "mutators," which are small programs which affect gameplay. The Unlimited Ammo mutator gives everyone, including the computer-controlled bots, unlimited ammo, so while your ammo never runs out, once one of them gets their hands on a rocket launcher, it's all over. Another favorite is Matrix-Moves, in which you can run up walls, double jump, do front, back, and side flips, and even freeze in mid-air.

The game features your basic Deathmatch as well as team deathmatch, in which you shoot on sight. There is also Capture the Flag, where you have to take the enemy's flag to your own base. We also have Domination, where you must hold certain areas for a set amount of time. In Last Man Standing, you have "lives" rather than a time or kill limit. Finally, there's Assault, where you must complete variable objectives in so much time, and, upon completing those objectives, switch sides and prevent the computer from doing the same.

If that's not enough, you can download Mods which add new play modes, or totally change the game into something new. Of course, there are also skins and voice packs, so you can customize not only your character, but the bots as well.

In short, you can literally tweak your character (and the computer's) and the entire game play to your liking. Not only that, in my opinion, the gameplay is tighter than Quake 3 Arena.

Takes the FPS to a new level

If first person shooters are your thing, UT is next level. Great graphics and cool characters. Definitely for MATURE audiences though. Very gory and the language is pretty raw too. There's team play with Capture the Flag and Team Assalts and there's the good old fashioned Deathmatch. On line play is great too. Overall an A+ for this game.

Head Shot!

...there I was, approaching the enemy base to grab their flag. I leap over the wall, grab their flag, and furiously try to escape by leaping back over the wall, hopping like mad...and then my sys admin puts a bullet in my head. My body falls over and my head bounces away...

This scenario is not all that uncommon in "Unreal Tournament". This is easily the most addictive, and fun, FPS game of all time. There are five modes of play: Capture the Flag (described above), deathmatch, assault, domination, and team deathmatch. The weapons are incredibly well-balanced and varied. For example, there is a sniple rifle for you campers out there. There's the flak cannon for those who like close-up combat. Then there is the Redeemer, a guided nuclear missile which destroys anyone within its considerable blast radius.

The maps are gorgeous, as well. The Capture the Flag map "Facing Worlds" is well-rendered with the earth in the background, while the deathmatch map "Phobos Moon" has weapons and hazzards galore. The AI of the bots is adjustable to your skill level. Experienced bots will give you a challenge, and Godlike bots will have you for lunch.

The strength of UT lies in its multiplayer mode. There is nothing quite like stalking a friend, taking him out with a rocket launcher, then seeing his body parts bounce away while you merrily taunt him. Of course, be prepared for him to return the favor! When you and several friends are playing at the same time, you will never want to stop playing. Capture the Flag mode involves not just skill, but strategy as well. But for an old fashion frag-fest, deathmatch will do quite nicely.

The system requirements may be a bit steep (my PC has a 500 MHz chip and I still have occasional framerate issues), but the problems are minor. There is occasional bad language and gratuitous, over-the-top violence and gore. In other words, don't let your pre-teen child play this game. But for adults, this is one computer game that will have you and your friends talking about and dying to play for a very, very long time.

Unsurpassed in its field

Everything about Unreal Tournament simply exudes quality. Graphically, the game is beautiful and runs well on my P2-350 with a RivaTNT card. The textures in particular look stunning at the higher detail levels. However, what really sets UT above the competition (such as Quake 3) is the gameplay. The weapons, for example, are far more imaginative and interesting than Q3's. Each weapon is unique and has two modes of fire, giving UT a good sense of variety. The highly customizable bots play well at reasonable difficulty levels. If you play on servers that support ngWorldStats, you can view detailed statistics about the matches you play and the players you encounter, including their weekly and quarterly rating and rankings. But most importantly, the game is still supported by a thriving online community. A plethora of mods and maps are available for download, and one rarely has a problem locating an active game to join.

Unreal Tournament is an excellent value for the price. These days, you encounter so few games that get so much right and so little wrong. Unless first person action games don't interest you, you really can't go wrong with UT.

My guilty pleasure...

Quake 3 may be a bit better for solo deathmatches... that's a matter of opinion. But for team play and wacked environments, UT is the bomb.

Where this game really shines is in team play, particularly capture the flag and assault. It's wicked fun with stunning visuals... a real adrenalin rush.

I just wish I was actually good at it...

The new definition of FPS

Unreal Tournament is the new model for what a FPS should be. The graphics are great, the sound is amazing, the level design is absolutely top notch and very creative. Perhaps the best part of Unreal Tournament is the number of options that you have out of the box. As your skills improve, the game can continue to challenge you on single player with adjustable AI. Of course the multiplayer is where the game truly shines. Getting online is simple, so you will be fragging your friends in no time. If you like this type of game and have not played it yet, you are missing one of the best games to come out in recent years.

The only FPS wrth buying since Half life

After buying half life at xmas 1998- i searched the games market for another FPS worth purchasing. After mixed reviews i bought Opposing Force and later regretted it and then decided that i would buy either QIII or UT. I went for UT and i believe it was the right choice. The depth of this game is amazing, the detail is fantastic and the maps are varied and distinct. UT reeks of pure class. The CTF, Assult, Domination and LMS mods are the icing on an already brilliant cake! Superb
