Plenty of flaws but still a good game.

It is a good game. I've taken an interest in alternate history and that's why I bought this. First of all, I noticed the name Dream Catcher appearing when I started the game. I was a bit nervous because I played From Dusk Til Dawn which is also Dream Catcher and it was so horrible I stopped playing. In this game, you play as Lieutenant James Anderson. World War 1 never ended, lasted for 50 years. The character models are ok but they're nothing special. The graphics are excellent. There is also great atmosphere. You see bodies and wrecked tanks on the battlefield, even old fashioned cannons. Now onto the bad things. There are bugs. In some levels you can get shot through the wall by enemies. You can barely aim the rocket launcher at the enemy helicopters(not a bug but pretty annoying). Plus the game is very difficult, large waves of enemies can kill you in a second. I hope there will be other alternate history games but hopefully with less flaws. That's not to say this game is not worth getting but the problems need to be fixed.

Ironstorm - 50 years of WWI Combat Shooter

I was very compelled to write a review regarding this game. This 3d shooter stands above the rest of the games of its type by rewriting an alternate history for the story plot. The game asks the question: "What if WWI never ended and instead continued to be fought in the trenches for more than 50 years? Spanning from 1914 to 1964, Ironstorm combines all the weaponry and technology from the WWI, WWII, Vietnam era and other unseen inventions that would have been created if WWI did in fact continue on for so long. The graphics of this game are superb and the background lanscaping makes the feel of a worn torn alternate era. The sound is decent and the gameplay is good. The player can alternate from first person 3d shooter view to a 3rd person view. The game requires much more than just run and shoot up the baddies. In fact it requires quite a bit of crawling around and infiltration. There are no cheats for this game available except thru a downloadable trainer. I only gave this game 3 stars because it is very clear that 4X stuidos and Dreamcatcher co. rushed this game to the stores without testing out all the bugs just to make a quick buck. In fact the newest patch 1.02 does not fix most of the major bugs but it does fix some minor bugs for those people who experience game crashes if they own a usb keyboard or mouse. But even after installing the newest patch, the game will still crash back to desktop everytime (1 min of gameplay before it crashes). Another problem that I have experienced is a sound problem. Sometimes the gameplay will be choppy and the sound for the game will be nonexistent if you hit escape and try to save your game. It really is disappointing however to see such a great game with a good concept go to waste because of so many bugs that have yet to be corrected. My advice for those people who are thinking of buying this game are:
1) Wait for the next patch (current patch is 1.02) and hopefully the game crashes and sound issues will be corrected.
2) Wait until the game comes out with a newer version at retail stores.
3) Wait until this game drops in price. Current price I purchased it for was 34.99. Maybe the game will lower its price even more because of the gameplay issues.

This game is good because of 2 main reasons, unlike other shooters it has 3rd person view(you can see behind player) and it also has amazing levels. Heres my scale.

Gameplay = 7/10
Graphics = 8/10
Sound = 10/10
Value = 7/10
Tilt = 10/10

Have fun!=)

I bought this game (original-off-the-shelf) and went home to load it up. Installed great and when I went to play it... it would not work. I am serious! I spent hours going through the readme files with a fine tooth comb and they will tell you in the same file that THEY KNOW the game will not run with the majority of sound and video cards on the market. I patched the game and even installed it's included safe mode drivers (Yes it comes with a safe mode version- so what does that tell you!) and it still didn't work. I patched it- nothing! Wrote customer support and they said that they are aware; and I quote, "Like yourself, we are very disappointed at the problem you are experiencing and are working hard to correct this". So the bottom line is that they realeased this product loaded with bugs. It is a waste of money for people to buy it!

Great concept game

A lot of reviewers had complaints about this game that I never saw. I hesitated in buying this game because of some of the reviews, but I went ahead because I had wanted it since I first came across it in the store. I installed it on my PC and then loaded the patch available at the manufacturer's website. I never had any problems with the engine or crashing. Everything in the single player mode ran smoothly. I never really tried out the multiplayer.

I thought this game was awesome. I wish the battlefield action had extended later into the game, but the levels were very well done. There was a wide variety of action, from trying to assault a bombed-out church and enemy trenches to sneaking around a giant armored train. The weapons and technology were really innovative conceptually if not in actual game play. The guns and fortifications were exactly how I would imagine them to be if WWI were still going on 50 years later. The story was kind of broken up, but still very interesting. All in all, I'd say I got my money's worth and then some since this game was so cheap by the time I bought it. Iron Storm had a lot of great things going for it, but my favorite feature was being able to switch your view back and forth between 1st and 3rd person perspectives. I gave it 4 stars, but would in reality give it 4.5 if possible.

It is very good, but a few glitches....

First of all, this game is very well done and it is a challenge campared to Medal of Honor.

1:Very good graphics-Graphics are very good with a small glitch but otherwise good.
2:Very good sound-The sound is very realistic.
3:Very good enemy AI-The enemy AI is very good, and they will fire upon you if they see you.
4:Very good weapons-You get different weapons as the game goes on, and the enemy gets tougher.
5:6 long levels- The levels are extremly long and are a challenge.

My only problem with the game is when you get to certain points you can't go on and you have to figure out how to get past it. It can be very frustrating but if you think(or look online), you will get passed it.

I would rate it a 4 star, but when I get stuck, it takes a while to figue out.

Alternate History In 3-D

IronStorm is a fantastic alternate history based game where you take on the role of Lieutenant James Anderson as he tries to bring "THE WAR" to an end. What would happen if WWI never came to a close? Iron Storm helps you to find out!

Graphics: Absolutely fantastic I have not seen graphics done to this intense level in an FPS, on such a grand scale, since Half-Life was first released. The smoke in this game is just absolutely fantastic, you will fall in love with the graphics with the introduction movie which is done with the game engine.

Sound: While the voice acting is a bit rugged overall it is well done and rather appropriate for each particular situation. The sound effects in general are stunningly well done, however certain aspects (particularly weapon sounds) come off a bit weak. Surround sound helps alot with this particular game.

Game Play: The sneak missions are incredibaly difficult to play through while everything else is relatively difficult but not too difficult to keep you from playing through the game. There are a few areas where things need to be changed but hopefully they will be updated with a patch by Dreamcatcher.

AI: the AI is marvelously done and results in some nail biteing action and some very difficult situations that you will have to get yourself out of.

Replay Value: Relatively high. With a single player game that is worth playing through more than once and a multiplayer game that is fantastic (although rather laggy at the moment with a small amount of community support) Iron Storm is sure to give you hours of replay time.

Overall I would definately say this particular game is worth its price, especially if an SDK is released so that modifications can be made. I can see IronStorm building up a community to rival even that of Half-Life and its respective modifications (IE Counter-Strike).

fun , but glitchy

I really did enjoy this game , it has a great feel , doesn't call for an ultra high end pc , it isn't too terribly difficult (but I did get stuck in a room or 2) . . it had some minor sound and video glitches that were tolerable.the guns are great , the levels are well planned , the ai seemed to be ok , too . . .well worth $5 , but don't bother spending $20 for new..

A SERIOUS FPS FOR SERIOUS GAMERS.

The people who actually lived through it called it not WWII but "The War". What if The War had never ended; what if it kept going on its youth grinding path for decades, absorbing lives and destroying dreams, and, eventually, becoming an economic entity of its own? Well, that would have been an alternative world in great need of heroes.

You will be fitting the well-used boots of James Anderson, an officer on the Allied side, sent deep behind enemy lines with the core objective of disrupting and disabling the Russian weapons program. Things, of course, do no go as planed. They rarely do in games with good stories.

The atmosphere is bleak and grey and the level design is exceptional. The environments clearly depict a grim world where the shadow of war has set in the land and in deep the hearts of people. Shell-torn houses, muddy ditches and endless trenches are all that is left of Europe after 2 generations of endless warfare. Alternating between drab outdoor vistas, claustrophobic trenches and war-delapitaded buildings helps submerge the player in the game world, and makes him feel like he's the one creating the story.

The set of weapons is excellently balanced, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. A lot of FPS games get ruined by badly designed, ineffective or overly-effective weapons. IRON STORM's weapons should be taught in game-designer seminars! Sniping is highly encouraged, however, when in close and confided spaces nothing beats a shotgun's deadly spread.

Where it looses the 5th star: for starters, the controls are not remapable! I prefer using the arrow-keys (instead of the WASD-configuration), and customizing the keyboard controls to conform with my habits. However, whenever this was attempted the game...crashed - unacceptable for a game of this caliber.
Moreover, the game setting just begs for a multiplayer. However, the lag is totally atrocious and renders the multiplayer practically useless.

Now, this is a beautiful but in no way an easy game. There are snipers everywhere and you are all alone (frankly though, this not as bad as it sounds given that the quality of squads' AI has not improved over the years). On top of that, there is an endless number of nerve-racking German K9 units, tough enemy infantry, hidden bunkers, elite gunmen and ever-changing objectives from headquarters: all will stand in your way to victory. Bravery is rewarded - but, sometimes, a full frontal attack will only make sure you will be reloading again and again. Sneaking your way through heavily guarded areas is, in many instances, the only way to stay alive and fight another day...

All in all, although not perfect, it does come close. This is a serious FPS game for serious gamers.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

It had potential....

I really liked this game the first time I played it. The graphics are good, the battles are fun, and it is really challenging. The second time I played it however, it had lost almost all of its fun. This is one of the most scripted games I have ever played. The same things happen in the single player every time you play because the AI is incredibly scripted. The gameplay is diverse, but it just has no replay value at all. The multiplayer is quite bad as it is very laggy and the maps are not good at all. If you played a demo version and want to play the rest, then by all means buy this game, beat it, then sell it. If you have beat it once, you will never want to play it again. The developers could have made it so much better by just trying to make the gameplay a little less linear.
