Disney and Square = Nine Hours No Sleep.

Allright, so I almost slept on this, one because I don't find final fantasy games the best thing since sliced [bread], but there was a couple I did like, basically the old school ones, final fantasy three for the snes, and two wassn't bad, seven was my favorite psx, and x, I dunno about x, anyways, this game perfectly blends, Legacy of mana like gameplay elements, basically meaning unlike most annoying ff games, your fighting in real time, you can attack as fast, as many times as you'd like, you can run from enemies instead of face them, cast spells on the fly, the only bad thing to me about this is, some of the bosses are going to destroy you, because they're powerfull, and while your say, pulling up the items menu, they nailed you three times, it's a very fast paced game, but that isn't so bad, there is a definate challange here, which is by no means, a bad thing, Donald and Goofy, are basically brilliant usually, the A.I. is top notch, they don't just follow in a straight line, they'll run alongside you, they'll follow you, if they fall off a cliff, they'll be back, they're great aides in battles, and you'll need them, the boss battles are TOUGH, but that's allright, because they're also BEAUTIFULLY ANIMATED, top notch, it's like your watching a Disney film, but your taking part, the FF charactors basically just make cameos, also a lot of disney cameos, sometimes they assist you, there is a ton of disney charactors who will fight alongside you througout the game, there are summons, for example SIMBA can help you along, he's the first summon you'll get, I don't know the rest because I played the first night for nine hours, I haven't done that since FF3.
It's an interactive movie, but it isn't like FFX every five minutes a cinema, so it's like your never playing anyways..Sora's voice as haley joel osment, is very impressive, perfect fit..i'll give you one spoiler, this is reason enough to buy the game, in azkhaban(aladdins world.) your going to face a giant tiger head, that animates so incredibly you'll wonder if it's really the PS2. Cerebus(will astound you.) just, if your a fan of disney at all, even if you don't like roleplaying games, you owe it to yourself to buy this game, it's the PS2 Game of the year, aside from Vice City of course. I've Spoken.

Captivating...

Years ago, I had wondered to myself what would happen if Disney and Square were to merge their efforts. Kingdom Hearts is the answer to my question. A visually stunning game, Kingdom Hearts is a world-hopping adventure in which a young boy, Sora, sets out to explore what lies beyond his own home. Along the way, various characters of Final Fantasy and Disney fame wander into his life and aid him in his quest. The story and plot are wonderful and never ceased to entertain and amaze me. The game does, however, suffer from some mechanical problems. The camera is not nearly as intuitive as it should be. While playing, I sometimes found myself fighting an enemy that I could not see and trying to manually maneuver the camera so I could see what I was doing. Controlling the camera with the shoulder buttons while frantically mashing buttons to defeat enemies is difficult, to say the least. That leads me to another problem. While I have no big problems with the battle mechanics, the in-battle menus are terrible to deal with. I faced a huge learning curve with those menus while trying to move Sora with the analog stick and go through the menu with the D-pad. Also, you cannot enter the main menu while in battle, so if something isn't stocked in your character's battle menu, it's inaccessible. The characters that join your party and follow you around frequently get in your way, which poses problems when trying to deal with the more platform type elements, such as jumping, climbing, etc. Although I've mentioned many flaws, they are more than overcome by the various Disney elements and the strong Final Fantasy undertone that flows throughout. I enjoyed seeing my favorite characters from the Final Fantasy series, though I have some serious qualms with the voice-actors chosen to portray them. My aversion to the voice-acting is a personal bias however, and the voice acting is actually well above par. Though the game's appearance is obviously Disney, the storyline is pure SquareSoft. The protagonist is faced with love, loss, hatred, friendship, and adventure, which are all staples of the Final Fantasy series. I believe that this game will appeal to someone who is more interested in a visual adventure with a captivating story and doesn't place the emphasis on battles.

Kingdom Hearts: An Excellent Game!!!!

Kingdom Hearts is an excellent game! I love eveything about it! I think the way the creaters combined popular Squaresoft and Disney characters gave it an interesting and cute touch. I thought that the graphics were excellent! Every Disney character looked as if it was just drawed. Also, the voice-overs were great! All of the characters sounded like their original voice, and the setting was exactly the same! The other characters, and the storyline of the game was also very original. My favorite character in the game would have to be Leon (Squall)-(Final Fantasy 8)! He was really cool (not to mention HOT!!!) The classical music and the theme song-Simple And Clean, was also great. Overall, I thought that Kingdom Hearts, was a fabulous game, and hope there will be a sequel!!!!!

More Kingdom Hearts Please

I have been playing video games for years and I am not easily impressed anymore. This game was one that didn't let me down in any area other than, I wanted it to last forever. It grabbed onto me and pulled me into it.
I was never a Final Fantasy Fan because of the RPG game play, but I loved the graphics and ideas (didn't know about their characters at that time). I was never a Disney game fan because though Disney had awesome characters, the games had always lacked big time in what makes a game good and fun to play.

I took my chances and bought Kingdom Hearts and now I am really depressed. Kingdom Hearts let me down because the sequel wasn't soon enough and I can't wait for it! The only game that satisfied me after Kingdom Hearts was Grand Theft Auto Vice City. Now I'm depressed twice.
It's going to be tough to survive until the rest of the stories come out:)

Kingdom Hearts is an awesome game that I will keep in my collection forever. It Rocks and it raised the bar on what gamers want.

Thankfully...it's as good as I hoped

Admit it. When you first heard about Square and Disney working together on a game...you were a bit skeptic. I'm a huge Square fan, and know that so-called "kiddie" games can be just as good as the "mature" ones. But I'm man enough to say it...I was a little scared. There was always that thought in the back of my mind...what if? Thankfully, that little thought was nothing more than that. A thought. Realistically, this game is wonderful.

Graphics...top-notch. Disney, while maybe not always delivering in gameplay, always delivers with the artistic look. It looks make you feel like you're in the middle of the "Magical World of Disney" which is exactly what they were shooting for, and that makes the graphics all the more better...if that's the right term. But...there is one exception in this catagory...and that's the ever so-complained about Gummi Ship segments. It looks more like top-notch PS1 graphics, and top-motch PS1 graphics really can't compare with even middle of the road PS2. To me, that's just inexcusable.

The controls are pretty comfortable, though can be a bit awkward at times. Moving with the left thumbstick and scrolling through your action menu with the right feels very smooth, but that leaves camera rotation to the L and R buttons, and that DOESN'T feel too smooth. And the jumping can be a bit awkward at times as well, but that's because of the platform type jumping in the game, and really, how many games have got platform jumping down-pat? Mario...and then...hmmmmm...I dunno. Other than that though, the controls are pretty good.

The sounds...superb. I read an article saying that Disney is the best thing to ever happen to video game voice overs, and I must say...I agree. The FFX ones were pretty good, but seemed a bit...awkward at times (Sometimes, monotone doesn't work Yuna.) Kingdom Hearts gets it down. My only complaint...is that, me being a big fan of Disney movies, you can tell that some of the characters aren't voiced by the real actors. I'm sure few of them were, but I don't want to be able to tell it, y'know what I'm saying? And since this is a Squaresoft game, I don't need to comment on the music score...but I will anyways. Wonderful. Really sets the mood for each area superbly.

And, now what you've been waiting for...gameplay. Great. Very innovative for a RPG. A smooth combonation of real-time fighting and standard RPG menu actions. One of the best platform/RPG blends I've ever played. While Goofy and Donald are not playable characters and completely A.I. controlled, they're not stupid A.I. If someone needs healing, they'll get it. While they're not as goos as if they were controlled by a human player, they won't lead to you demise (often.) The story is good, especially seeing as how it mainly focused around jumping around Disney movie to Disney movie. But...as I mentioned before...there's the Gummi Ship. While I do give Square and Disney credit for trying to incorporate a little mini-game into travelling from place to place...it doesn't work out too well. It tries hard though. But it only comes off as a bad Starfox clone. But thankfully, the Gummi Ship segments don't last too long, and it's back to the funfun.

Overall...this is easily the best RPG to hit the states this year (FFX was released last December, remember?) It could be one of the best RPG's of the next-gen era...except for the Gummi Ship. Even so, I highly recommend this game. Check it out...odds are you'll like it...

Amazingly Addictive!

If you're thinking of buying this game - go for it! It's a fantastic game. You should be warned, though, that this game is seriously addictive. You may very well find yourself playing for hours and hours on end. Of course, that is the sign of a great game. After all, who needs sleep? *wink*

The thing I like the most about Kingdom Hearts is that there are all sorts of games within the games. There are quests, and puzzles, and good old fashioned combat. They do an excellent job at keeping you guessing and keeping you entertained. To my surprise, I also found wandering around in all of those familiar Disney worlds very compelling. Since we've all know those Disney characters so well, it lends the game a level of depth that you don't experience with most other games. It makes it so much easier to be swept into the game because of it - and so much more fun.

The only problem I had with Kingdom Hearts is that you can't jump through the cut scenes. For the most part, it's not a big deal, since the cut scenes are great. However, if you keep losing to a boss, and have to refight them over and over, the cut scene becomes annoying. Luckily, the ablility levels of the bosses are well balanced - so I've found it challenging to fight them, but not impossible to win.

Overall, it's a great game, and would get my vote for the best game of 2002. Rent it or buy it the next chance you get - and happy gaming!

Another Square masterpiece!

What can I say? Square has another masterpiece here. Simple as that! This game just plain rocks...and it's one of the best they have made! Kingdom Hearts plays like a 3D pumped up version of Secret of Mana....alot of button smashing and timing things correctly..some of the bosses aren't pushovers either and this game isn't kiddy it may have Disney characters but it's pretty tough in parts...you'll see alot of your fave Final Fantasy characters and all of your fave Disney stars....calling upon Simba as a Guardian Force is just downright COOL...or you summon the Genie...and Dumbo...it's all just fantastic! The graphics and voice acting are superb! Be forewarned this isn't a child's game challenge wise...if you think it is buy and play it on expert....you won't get far. Kingdom Hearts rocks and this is a game everyone Disney or RPG nut should experience! This game is not by far a let down....it really is FUN!

Just plain awesome!

This game rocks like heck! You play as a kid named Sora. You find Donald and Goofy. You're with them for the rest of the game, kicking Heartless butt. You go to different Disney worlds, from Atlantica, to Halloween Town, to Neverland, (which is my favorite, cuz you can fly!) You get Disney heroes to join your party, like Tarzan and Peter Pan. The graphics rock for a game that came out in 2002. In general, YOU NEED THIS GAME!

Such a GOOD GAME!

Now, when this game first came out, i though "oh GREAT another STUPID DISNEY GAME!" BUT is was 100 Percent WRONG! this game has beautiful graphics, a magnifisent plot, great characters and music, etc...

This game seems very well thought out, i mean, the worlds, plot, and detail will make you FAINT!

The Bosses aren't too hard, and aren't too easy either. they are just right. The only boss that is almost impossable without the ultima weapon is Sephiroth. he's still very hard with the ultima weapon, but worth the fight.

Play this game, and this game alone. Kingdom hearts 2 is terrable. and Chain of memories... well, it's ok... but very stupid.

Wow. Just wow.

I first bought this game because I had played it at a friend's house and thought it was pretty cool...and cute the way that Squaresoft mixes Final Fantasy (though I've never played those games) and Disney. However, when I finally got to seriously playing this game, it was just amazing. The storyline is superbly explained (a 14 year old boy named Sora lives on Destiny Island with Kairi, Riku, and a few characters from Final Fantasy. one day, there's a storm and everybody disappears, including Riku and Kairi. Sora sets out to find them, and along the way, makes new friends and discovers a ton of things), the graphics are really nice, the controls are easy to use, and the gameplay is hard but not impossible. Also, the cutscenes (mostly the one at the end) are really touching/moving, especially coupled with the music (the music is really nice in the starting cutscene). This game is a must-buy and I really can't wait for the second one!
