Not exactly disappointing

I loved Kingdom Hearts. LOVED. And at the end, I cried and wondered if the three would ever be reunited. Then, they finally announced that there would be a sequel! And so, I waited. And the release was delayed. So I waited! And the release was delayed. And then FINALLY, it came out! I rushed out and of course bought it the day of the release and sat down, hoping for a fantastic game. The graphics were stunning and the new characters intrigued me. However, the prologue, which was just a long elaborate chapter of the beginning, was 2 and a half hours long, just to finally -really- start the game. Some people liked the battle systems better on this game, but I didn't. I guess that's because I was comparing it to the original though and I expected something just like the original. Honestly, it's not very tough. I started on the Standard mode, but got stuck at Shan-Yu, so I restarted the game on Easy and had to waste about 1 hour on the beginning (bless them for giving me the option Skip Scene!). So now, in only a few days, I'm past 4 or 5 levels, only getting Game Overs for running out of Morale or Time, which I HATE. The Morale in Mulan made me CURSE and SCREAM and WHINE. But that's just a little annoyance.
Complimenting the game, of course the graphics are fantastic and the story is interesting enough that I haven't quit in the middle due to the frustrations. I'm not yet sure if I like the theme song better than 'Simple and Clean', but it is very nice. The beginning sequence is also much longer and much more confusing but I love it (especially the staircase part, those who have played it know of what I speak.).
All in all, the game is a WHOLE lot of talking and not a whole lot of fighting and exploring. It just depends on what you like. My loyalty to Sora and the rest of the Kingdom Hearts crew makes me love the game but sometimes I wish it was a little more like the first game...

OKAY, UPDATE.

I just finished the game. The ending was fantastic, although extremely short. It was more than enough though. Having played the whole game, I can give a more accurate review.

SUPERFICIAL RATINGS
Graphics: 20 out of 10. What else could you expect? Technology advanced make for amazing looking games. The facial expressions when the characters were speaking in semi-cinematic scenes were extremely good, especially Sora's. When he cried, I wanted to cry with him.

Sound: 9.5 out of 10. The music was very similar to the first game. I personally enjoyed it; the revamped Disney music was cute and memory-bringing. Atlantica's musicals were also rather cute, although only 2 out of the 5 songs were in the original movie. The theme song is very lovely, though the words are slightly harder to understand than Simple and Clean. But, the theme song did pull at my heart at the end as the ending wrapped up. The sound was all in all, very good quality.

GAMEPLAY RATINGS
Battle controls: 9 out of 10. This is just a personal preference. The Reaction Command took a little bit of time to get used to. Sora is unbelievably strong and the controls usually just mean MASH BUTTONS WILDLY. I never understood how Limit Commands worked.

World/Walking controls: 9 out of 10. The camera was slightly easier to use and you are less likely to have your vision line behind a tree or cliff and end up dying because you can't see anything.

Gummi ship: 10 out of 10. Not much to say except it's more difficult and more fun this time!

Difficulty: (varies) The game seemed a lot easier than the first. BUT. I played it on Easy, so... It took me 22 hours to complete it on Easy while it took me about 50 to complete the first game on Easy. That's to say, this game seems to be a lot quicker play than KH1.

SO, MY TOTAL OPINION.
At first, the game disappointed me a litle. However, halfway through when the story really unfolded, it redeemed itself. Unlike Final fantasy X-2, it gave us a beautiful, perfect ending. I couldn't have asked for a better sequel.

But you know what?

THE ENDING LEAVES ROOM FOR ANOTHER ONE!

Whoo, 4 more years of waiting, HERE I COME!

ANOTHER UPDATE: I just wanted to say I would have liked to have seen more of Roxas than just a long prologue. I adored Roxas' character, he was adorable and spirited and mysterious, but once he's gone, he is -gone-. And also, I LOVED Axel! Definitely a favorite. Would liked to have seen more of him too. *teardrop*

And also, how many Ansems are there exactly? So far, I'm counting 4...

And also, I would like to see more of Hayner in the next Kingdom Hearts! Cause I'm sure there will be another. Let's see Hayner, Pence, Olette, and Setzer go on an adventure! (Though it was odd that Setzer, a gorgeous 20-something -man-, wants to steal a title from a bunch of bright eyed -kids-.)

Oh, and I suggest to get the little Kingdom Hearts mangas. I've only read the first one, but it was just adorable.

And despite the briefness of the ending, it was good. Just as a wrap up to the game though there was a huge HUGE HUGE loose end: WHERE DID PETE AND MALEFICENT GO? Ugh. TIME FOR ANOTHER SEQUEL!)

And again I cry:

FOUR MORE YEARS OF WAITING, HERE I COME!

-w00t-

SquarEnix does it again!!!

Kindom Hearts II is the sequal to the hit classic Kingdom Hearts. KH 2 takes place right after the GBA game Kingdom Hearts chain of memories. Furtunatley you don't need to have played Chain of Memeories to really understand what is going on. Of course it doesn't hurt to have played (like having to play Enter the Matrix to help you understand the second the movie) KH 2 has Sora, Donald, and Goofy returning to once again fight the Heartless and some new enemies.

Sound 4 stars ****

The sounds and music help makes this game come to life with wonderful voice acting. Even though some of the disney characters aren't done by the original acters. You can recognize some of the original scores from the movies. The theme song is also done really well. Sound effect are amazing help to bring to life the action that is happening in the game.

Graphics 5 stars *****

KH 2 takes full use of ps2's graphic engine even though we are going to to next gen of consoles the ps2 still have some life in it and KH 2 shows it. Character are represented with beautiful graphics and are sometimes better than on DVD and Video. Even though there are a few jaggies it doesn't take away from the game at all. It makes me wish I had a HDTV to take advantage and see what it can really do.

Gameplay 4 stars ****

The control are a big improvement from the first Kindgdom Hearts. You can pull back and control the camera with the right analog stick which comes in handy when fighting a few tough boses. The L1 button is used to pull of some quick magic and items instead of scrolling through the menu. The triangle button is now in command of reaction commands the help counter the heartless or pulling of your limits and changing into Soras new forms, allowing you to pull it off in a pinch. But it still remains a button masher press "X" until it dies, but now its press triangle too.

Replayabitly 3 stars ***

There are 3 modes from KH 2 beginers mode, stardard, and hard.
Basically if you played the 1st Kindgom Hearts, you won't be playing beginners at all and you can play it on hard to see how Hardcore you are and for bragging rights. Also like the first Kingdom Hearts theres a secret ending you get for doing everything in the game. But can't be unlocked in Begeners mode so fair warning if you start on beginners and you want to see the special ending you will have to play it in standard or Hard.

Overal 4 stars ****

Kingdom Hearts 2 is a game for all ages adult and Kids. Sora, Goofy, and Donald provide some comedy momments to give kids some laughs while the story is a little on the dark side to keep it intresting for adults. With Sora's new weapon forms it adds more strategy to the game. Basically if you like Kingdom Hearts you will also love Kingdom Hearts 2.

K2--Awesome Game but...

I just finished beating KH2. It took me about a week and a half. Compared to how long it took me to beat the first one, this is pretty surreal. Still the gameplay is much easier. I'm glad the makers chose to make it more user friendly. It could have been a little more difficult though. Gameplay is improved.

Positives: Awesome graphics. Great fighting scenarios. Cool new worlds like Steamboat Willie. Inventive enemies.

Negatives: A little too easy. A little too long to get into gameplay. Too much talking, not enough fighting. I felt like i was watching a movie instead of playing a game half of the time.
Anti-climatic. I cried at the end of Kingdom Hearts. Part 2, I was still moved, but not as much. CONFUSING STORY LINE. I'm still not sure exactly what happened. And can someone tell me what happened to Malificent and Pete? They had a story line right? I suppose that will be KH3.

Could've been great, might've been...

As many have, when I first heard of KHI I was half-excited, half-skeptical. Square, whom had seemed to me guaranteed to produce games that most people could enjoy well into their lives, paired with Disney, who was good for distracting children with bright colors and "shallow end of the pool" story depth? And like most, as soon as I started playing I was absolutely hooked. The world this introduced was amazing, it was promising, and the disney elements didn't detract from it much. As soon as I heard there'd be a sequel, I restlessly awaited till I could find out how it all tied up and everyone got home.

It ended up being that Chain of Memories told how it tied together and, unfortunately, in CoM that was where the story depth ended. What I found in II instead were shallow plots, characters who were given meaningless personality traits for specific scenes then had them taken away for others, painful PAINFUL complete reusage of scenes and storylines from the movies they based the worlds on. It was... yes... Self Insert Mary-Sue Fanfiction Extravaganza, in a videogame. Oh Sora, how everyone loves you! Even though you aren't even a definable character anymore, and apart from your directly ripped from movies moments of endearment, you just fight monsters for them. This game is a direct disgrace to the art of making deep, real characters, and even to the characters in KHI and CoM.

I do believe the hope of people who played KHI was that KHII would be more down Square's path, visiting square worlds and such... I'm not sure anyone realized just how much originality Square put into the first, and in retrospect it seems clear to me that in this case it was Disney evening it out by making II a complete "kid-friendly"(which apparently means plotless now, instead of 'no violence and sexual anything'), mindless romp of nostalgia throughout their movies, with some of Square's graphic originality and fame to help sell it.

Musicwise, the game has a few good songs, including the patentedly addictive main song ("Sanctuary/Passion" by Utada Hikaru), rather similar to the first in this aspect. In most aspects it was a pretty good listen so I don't have many qualms here... the voice acting was alright considering, notably Doug Erholtz did a fine job of Leon... in fact most of the problem was not the talent of the voice actors, but the lines they had to say. And most assuredly during the course of the game you will find yourself wanting to mute it just so that you don't have to hear any conversation between your main three character or, indeed, all of the people who will inevitably shout "Sora! Donald! Goofy!" whenever you arrive.

As far as game mechanics go... the Gummi Ship battles are still fun enough, synthesis is pretty nifty, and Atlantica is no more annoying than all the other cruddy worlds you have to go through. If anything it was just trying to cash in on the rhythm game craze... I'm fairly certain that no world you previously visited has been revisited here in the state you knew it as, except Olympus Coliseum maybe and even then not for long. It's just a shame the story has done nothing to improve the general public's fear of sequels.

It is possible to make a sequel and have it be good(sometimes even better than the first!), but this definitely isn't such a case. Save your money and play through Chain of Memories, it's more interesting.

Dissapointed?

I've gotta say, I'm upset. About 4 years of waiting...Not as good as I hoped. It was a great game, I love the new battle system, but the story wasn't deep and Kingdom Hearts 2 seemed to be an Action/RPG compared to how the original was a Strategy/Action/RPG...
There were a lot of unexplained moments and some of the worlds like Agrabah and Space Paranoids seemed to be forced into the game.
And the attack of Technology...Wow...WOW. I won't say anything in particular mostly to avoid spoilers, but the game seems to be trying to be like the beginning of Final Fantasy 7.
The music is still great. In no way does Sanctuary top Simple and Clean but it describes the game perfectly. The music for Twilight Town seemed to grab the sense of confusion and innocence by the throat and put it into music. I loved how they just slightly changed the Hollow Bastion music to suit the new kind of "This is home" feeling. (Travese Town went out for pizza or something and hasn't come back..)
Overall, a really fun game just not as good as the original. And it's not 60 hours long as some have said.
Happy Otakuing and waiting another 5+ years for Kingdom Hearts 3!

Entertaining for kids under 10 only--sadly lame

I had just finished playing KH ast week and was so happy that there was a KH II, but I was completely appalled by how horribly lame and ugly this game is.

Nearly all the fun stuff in the first KH is gone.

--treasure chests litter the ground like birthday gifts, there's no challenge to get to them
--nice graphics, only too bad most of the beautiful background is just that-background, places where the character can't go. The designers might as well have drawn nothing outside the programmed path.
--horribly simplified and dumbed down-when wanting to explore an area away from the main task, as you could in the first KH, KH II comes up with a prompt telling you what the primary task is, locking out the other areas.
--Sora's fun abilities are locked into the Drive characters--so abilities like high jump have to have the Drive character enabled to use, and then only for a limited time. (Not that it matters--there are no longer any challenging areas to get to for treasure chests.)
--Boss battles aren't challenging and are too heavily prompted. I played the game at medium mode, not having to repeat even one boss battle, they were that easy.
--Moving from world to world via gummi ship, you are forced to play a boring rocket-ship shooter sequence to open the next world, but the graphics shift seemingly at random and you have no control over which way the camera is facing. If I wanted to play Space Invaders I would have bought Space Invaders.
--Too many cutscenes, that cut game play off, unexplored areas get locked out after some of them, so if you venture into the cutscene area first, you can't get back to other areas. I think there was more cutscene time than play time.
--Information tags are attached to items for seemingly no good reason. Items that never come up in the game play have green triangle information lights appear over them and meaningless factoids appear related to these. Why?
--The plotting/writing was horrible! Visiting Hollow Bastion, Leon reveals an army of heartless threatening the city. Sora promises that he, Donald and Goofy will help protect the city. Several minutes later, they are leaving the city, just because the found the path to the next world? Huh? What happened to protecting the city?

If you are under 10 and want an easy, pretty game--you'll enjoy this. Anyone who likes a challenge and a well-written, well-thought out game will not.

Just wow

First I'll start with the negative. I'm not thrilled about the "push this button now" system in battles. Aside from that, this game is brilliant. It looks almost next gen. These graphics are some of the best I've ever seen on the PS2. It is absolutely beautiful. And the music? OMG. This game needs to win some kind of video game award for it's music. Everything about this game is just perfect. Except for Cid's voice actor. That's terrible. But other than that, this is better than KH1.

once upon a time there was a god of games it has returned better than it's predecessor. THe original was known as kingdom hearts and now it has become even greater with new kick a** graphics, gameplay, and many other improvements over it's former godly self. It has reached a whole new level and really pushes the potential of the pS2's hardrive. With all new experiences and new characters it really changes things. It also allows you to run into some familiar characters and places with new twists. If you don't own this title yet then you should buy it and bow before the new king of games. Here is my review. I give this masterpiece a 5/5

May you ward off the darkness and Keep your hearts on the path of light.

I'm going to state the cons first then what I liked.
1. Playing as Roxas NO! No! No! He was boring. The first part while you play him before you get Sora is so drawn out and boring!
2. I didn't like Space Paranoids. I think they could have put something else in.
3. When I first heard they were going to put Yuna, Rikku, and Paine in I was excited but boy was I disappointed. They are in fairy size and annoying! Why do they want to mess with them like that? Why!!
4. Gummi routes are better than before but still don't like them.
5. You used to explore different places on a world now it is pretty straight forward Did not like this!!
6. Twilight Town mini games ugh!!

What I liked:
1. Playing as Sora !!!
2. The different worlds Port Royal (Annoying sometimes-getting the medallions from the pirates, could only beat them in the moonlight but still good-Jack Sparrow & other characters, the story), Disney Castle (Short but good-The faith reaction command was the key to getting Minnie where she needed to go), Timeless River-Good, The land of the dragons-Pretty good,Twilight Town-o.k. but hated the mini games, The pride lands-pretty good. Halloween/Christmas town-Good
3. Liked the reaction commands-Triangle button
4. Liked the different forms could use Valor, Master, Wisdom
5. Loved the Atlantica mini games after I figured out how to do them! Always like the 100 acre wood mini games!
6. The bosses were harder in the first KH but I'm not complaining
7. Loved the Santuary song
8. The ending was So-so. Liked parts when everyone reunited but to me was kinda of short.
All in all I still liked it no matter the cons. I'll always buy Kingdom Hearts if they make it I'll buy it!! Sora is one of my all time favorite game characters the second is Lara Croft!! It is well worth the money. I still cried at the ending. I'm sad that Tarzan couldn't be in this one I liked that world. Oh yeah glad Mickey was more in this one!! Still a very good game!
