I found this game somewhat disappointing. This is the first time I have ever played a metal gear game and found it lacking. I found the star wars game bounty hunter, which is another shoot the place up game, longer, graphically more impressive and faster moving.

The Best Version of an already Great Game

If you haven't played this game before, you don't know what you're missing. Metal Gear Solid is a video-game superstar, a true original. The story follows super-agent Solid Snake as he infiltrates an oil tanker to uncover a hidden weapons program, and then another agent Raiden visits the site where the tanker sank and further unravels the conspiracy. The game focuses on stealth, as you sneak past the guards on to rescue the president and save the world. And yet there are strong elements of action, puzzle, exploration and pure experimentation that make Metal Gear such a wonderful experience.

The original MGS2 was a masterpiece, and it is included, every part of it, within this new version. The plot is Hollywood-quality, the graphics are still amazing, the music and sounds are all top notch, but what I remember the most is the incredible detail in the game, from the realistic way in which guards and items react, to what you can try or what you can use, it always seems to be in the game. There are dozens of ways you can hide from the guards, distract them, or take them out. Most every object in the game has a purpose and use in the game, but you aren't required to use everything to succeed. This isn't the kind of game that forces you to play it's way. Like Grand Theft Auto or Tony Hawk, Metal Gear offers an open world that you can go back to and experiment over and over. Play your way, and the game gives you the tools to do it.

"Substance" refers to the extra missions that make up the meat of this new version. These missions are very clever and satisfying. They break down Metal Gear into its essence with short objectives and tiny areas that you can play quickly, concentrating on your performance. They are usually puzzle-oriented, and rarely focused on pure-action (put action is in there). VR missions take place in small virtual-reality levels and focus on game fundamentals with simple, focused missions. Alternate missions take place on the Tanker or Plant from the main game, have broader missions objective and free you to experiment in your methods, kinda like playing the main game.

In these missions you work on improving your scores and getting First Place in each level. Bonuses like "Stealth" and "No-kill" add to the challenge by rewarding you for playing a certain way. You can also play through these missions as different characters, like Raiden in a Ninja suit, or Snake in a Tuxedo, ala 007. Each character's missions rearrange the targets and increase the difficulty of the missions, so you can play through your favorite missions again in slightly remixed versions. Overall, there are over 500 missions! Specifically, they are:

WEAPONS TRAINING: VR Missions focusing on specific weapons and their strengths. For example, the pistol levels are mostly stationary target ranges, the automatic rifle missions are mostly run-and-gun, the Nikita missions have you guiding missiles through mazes, etc.

STEALTH MISSIONS: Pure Metal Gear, these VR missions require you to move from start to finish without anyone seeing you. They usually focus on specific tactics, like hanging from rails or crawling in air ducts.

ELIMINATION: These are repeats of the stealth VR missions, except you must eliminate all the guards to win. This is different from later elimination missions because no one can see you doing it, not even your victims, so you end up playing like a silent assassin.

1ST PERSON: These VR missions take place exclusively in 1st person mode, so the controls are different and the radar is often missing. Mission objectives alternate between killing all the guards (watch out for the cloaked guards!) and bomb disposal. The best missions take place in the dark.

VARIETY: Some truly outlandish missions that defy words. Protect a bag of curry with a sniper rifle, boss-battle with a giant guard with Godzilla fins in his back. My favorite is the sneaking mission with a bunch of Zilla-sized guards. Very cool.

BOMB-DISPOSAL: Alternate missions that take place on the tanker and Big Shell, these bombs in tricky locations, and you have to find them before time runs out, while guards are patrolling around you. Two different kinds of bomb detectors give some variety, and later levels are a huge pain.

ELIMINATION: Unlike the elimination mode in VR, in these missions you can go postal and kill all the guards in a blaze of glory, without worrying about hiding.

HOLD-UP MODE: This mode has you take out each guard by sneaking up behind them and holding them up, one-by-one. It surprising fun, one of my favorite mission types.

PHOTOGRAPH: This sounds simple- sneak around and take a digital picture - but there is usually some sort of mystery or puzzle involved, like "Take a picture of the murderer" kind of thing, where they give you visual clues and you have to figure out what to take a picture of. Nice, if not very exciting.

SNAKE TALES: You play these missions as Snake, in Big Shell, as an answer of sorts to all the complaints about Raiden in the original game. No radar or Codec either, so the levels are very difficult. My only complaint is that these Tales recycle a bunch of existing Alternate Missions, just strung together with a plot, and the plot itself is told entirely through text, so I wasn't that interested or excited by it.

BOSS SURVIVAL: Play one boss after another until you die or you defeat them all. This features all the bosses in the game, seven total.

SKATEBOARDING: Yep, just like it sounds. There are two levels, one for Snake and one for Raiden, and you complete tricks and objectives, much like Tony Hawk. Not nearly as good or detailed as THPS, but still good.

This is better than the original. The missions are awesome. You also have a skateboarding mission. The missions themselves are fun enough to be its own game. Mix the mission and the original game and you have an awesome Playstation 2 game.

Awsome game

The orginal game of Metal Gear Solid 2 was fun, don't deny it. But now that Substance is out, I'm going to warn you, stick with the orginal.

The Original Game: 4/5
Great stuff. Although there are many cut scenes, your bound to have fun with this stealth title.

The Extras: 3/5
The skateboarding is horrible, so don't even mess with it. However I must say that the huge amount of VR Missions prove for a good time.

Control: 4/5
You'd be suprised at some point in the game how easy it is to be stealthy. Pop around corners, freeze enemies in their tracks. It's all pretty easy to manuver!

Sound: 4/5
Top notch. Whenever enemies notice you, the music that plays can give you a start, and make you feel like your really in a chase. The opening theme song is lovely, and the voice overs are awesome. Really dramatic stuff.

Overall: 3/5
The game is alright, just take out Snake Tales and Skateboarding. I honestly think your better off paying 10 bucks for a used copy of the orginal game instead of this!

Pointless.

This is a pointless release. The VR Missions aren't even fun. There's not much to say about Substance other than that it's...pointless.

I LOVED MGS2 and thought this was a GREAT addition. For any TRUE Mgs fan this is a no brainer. The extras here are pretty darn good! Yeah the skateboarding is VERY gay but the game's extras are WELL worth the price here. The new Snake Levels are WELL worth the price.
