The only complaint I have is that the gamecase wasn't in such great condition. otherwise the gamedisc, coverart and manual were in great condition. Overall very good.

My favorite Metal Gear Solid game, yes even with Raiden.

As I stated above, this is my favorite game in the Metal Gear Solid series. It be due to the fact that it was also my first. My friends all raved about the original Metal Gear Solid, and they said Sons of Liberty was too.. Well, I had bought a Playstation 2 already so that I could play GTA III, so I figured I'd at least look into this, and I'm glad I did.

The graphics are top notch, some of the best you'll see on a Playstation 2. The art design is very clean looking, but dark and gloomy at the same time, there's something about it I find appealing.

The soundtrack is awesome, I just love it. Its a legendary soundtrack in gaming now, and rightfully so. Its fast paced and very suspenseful, I couldn't imagine Metal Gear Solid without it.

The game play is classic stealth at its finest. While Tenchu was really the first stealth game, this is the series that really made the genre explode. It keeps that polished game play here and improves on it. As good as the stealth is, its not the main focus of the game. The main focus of the game is storyline. Many will love the storytelling, others will hate it, but I was one of the people who loved it. In my opinion this is the game in the series where the wacky storytelling is at its wackiest and finest. Seriously, the last 20 minutes or so are so insane, they remind me of the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey. For those itching for more Metal Gear Solid there's some added content in Substance. There's the VR missions, Snakes Tales, and the MGS Skateboarding game.

Overall, if you enjoy stealth game play, and at the very least don't mind a storyline, you might enjoy this. I'm aware however, of the enormous amount of hate this series receives, and so apparently this game won't be for everyone. Those who do try it, don't go in expecting to hate it, give it a chance, you might end up loving it as much as I did.

One of the GREATEST games of our time!!!

Right! The title is true! It's even better than MGS3! The game really great and I thank Konami and Hideo Kojima for all the hard work and time they dedicated to create this wonderful game.
You play as Solid Snake(who I really love playing as) and Raiden(someone I don't think anyone would like at all). Each of them are similar and different in every way. Now, let's go to the review:

Story: 5/5
The story of the game is easy to understand. It has a very good plot and it has some movie elements crammed in the game.

Gameplay: 5/5
A very fun game. Once an enemy spots you, your radar becomes jammed and an alert screen will replace the radar, and you run as fast as you can and look for a crate, wall, or fence to hide behind. You wait till they've given up searching for you, but if you are spotted again while in EVASION or CAUTION mode, you will return to ALERT mode. Once they've given up, you equip your SOCOM or M9 and tranquillize or kill patrolling guards. Once they're all dead, you go on and continue on your path. That's just a bit of all the fun in the game.

Graphics: 5/5
The best graphics that you'll ever see in a video game yet. blood and waterdrops are very realistic and when you see gunshots shooting out of the gun it looks like it shoots out in the real way.

Sound: 4.5/5
Hearing was never like this in a video game. You could really hear what the characters are hearing when you go into FPV and intrusion mode. Plus, with the directional mic item accquired in the game you will hear realistic sounds.

Replay: 5/5
This game is long including VR missions and Snake Tales. If you're an expert at stealth-action games you'll be able to finish the game in a week. But if you're new to these games you might be finishing this in a month I think.

Overall: 6/5
This game you should buy NOW!!! Once you've read my review, you'd be going crazy and if you're a kid, I think you would be forced to whine and panic around just to get this game, so come on. Get you carkeys, turn on the car, and drive to the nearest game shop and look for the game. If you can't find it anywhere, well, you're just too slow and REALLY unlucky, so come on and get this game, NOW!!!

Well, that's it, that's my review. Now I know you're feeling crazy inside, so just calm down and drive relaxingly to the game store. THE END

If you don`t have MGS2:Sons Of Liberty and want to play MGS2,just go for this one;Substance, afterall it contains the entire Sons Of Liberty game along with a couple of extras:
Here is what you get if you buy MGS2:Substance :

*VR Missions(digital-style mini-missions)-7/10
*Snake Tales(All the games boss fights which star Solid Snake)-7/10
*SNAKEboarding mode(Raiden/Snake on a skateboard)-7/10

Its a good update and all,But its nowhere near as good as Metal Gear Solid 3:Snake Eater`s update "Subsistence" as you get much more worthy contents, the main game "Snake Eater" has a new low angle 3D camera,MG1 and MG2,Online play, secret theater and demo theater modes-all for only 30$.

This is more like the conclusion of mgs 2:sons of liberty.what i mean by that is its pretty much the hole story with alot of extras but if you already have the original copy then yes this still worth buying but i might suggest selling the original.Unless you like colect or somethin like that but this is a great add to the series.

Classic MGS

I think the best way to approach a massively hyped up game like MGS2, is to ignore the hype. I know people who bought this game and were really dissapointed, basically because they had been lead to believe it was going to be the best thing ever. I however was completely amazed by this game, it was a big surprise and it is definetely one of my favourite games of all time.

I owned MGS1 for the PS1, and to be honest thought it was a little over-rated, it was a great game, but people claiming it to be the best game ever, made me anticipate too much from it. I went into MGS2 not expecting too much, but I was completely blown away by the game. Great additions were the aiming in first person, which meant much greater accuracy when shooting, and generally the gameplay is superb. Collecting the Dog Tags was also a great addition, and adds longevity to the game (I have completed it about 10 times), the boss battles are also amazing, though there are fewer than the other games in the series. In particular the battles with the harrier, Vamp and the final bosses are great. So far so good, in fact there is very little wrong with the game, I only have two minor problems. Firstly you don't get to play as Snake enough, only a slight problem but Raiden is a bit of an (...), and most people agree Snake should have been the main playable character. The biggest problem though is the plot.

Up until about an hour from the end of the game the plot maves along nicely, with a couple of nice twists along the way, then it all goes to pieces. There is a ridiculously long cut scene (about an hour), near the end where you lose all idea of what is going on. I wont explain it here, mainly because I cant, I have completed the game loads of times and still can barely comprehend it now. The good thing is, when you have completed the game once you can skip the cut scenes, and you will want to at the end. While I did eventually grasp the plot at the end, it was just stupid, and were I reviewing this game out of 10, it would only get 9, just because of the plot.

Luckily for Hideo Kojima, the daft plot doesn't ruin this as a gaming experience, it is a fantastic game and highly recommended to any gaming fan. This review is not of the Substance version, but for some reason I can't find the original PS2 version on Amazon anywhere.

The sequel to the original rocks!

INTRO: With the mass popularity of the original game, it was a no-brainer that there would be a sequel. A little bit after Sons of Liberty was released, a version called Substance was released with more extras.

GAMEPLAY: (Like my Dark Cloud 2 review, the gameplay will be divided into sections.)

THE MAIN GAME: Just like the original, you have to be stealthy and sneaky. This time, there is more ways to be that way. Like hiding in lockers, setting off fire extinguishers, hanging, or disguising yourself.

There is more enemy activity, too. If they see you, they have to use their walkie-talkie to alert people. So, if you defeat the soldier before he calls them, you are OK, but they will conduct a search if you interrupt the call.

You can also hold up a soldier. Sneak behind them, pull out your gun, and Snake/Raiden should say, "Freeze!" and you can collect the soldier's dog tag this way.

The weapons are more advanced. Now you can shoot your gun in first person and you even have a tranquilizer.

You play as two characters throughout the game. Snake, who you play as briefly, and then Raiden (pronounced RIE-din) who I think is pretty underrated.

VR MISSIONS: You can practice your skills with a bunch (and I mean a BUNCH!) of VR missions with many different characters. One of my favorites is Variety mode, where one of the levels involves sneaking past Godzilla-sized enemies!

SNAKE TAILS: Play through 5 different missions involving Snake. Has nothing to do with the main plot.

SKATEBOARDING: A fun little skateboarding game.

SPECIAL: Everything else. Some of the stuff in Special you unlock. Like Boss Survival, which has you battling all the bosses!

GRAPHICS: The graphics look great. All the characters are very smooth and detailed.

MUSIC: A very powerful music score.

SOUND/VOICES: The sound is great, so are the voices.

STORY: A fine, yet somewhat confusing story, packed with plot twists.

OVERALL: One great game to add to your collection. Can't wait for MGS4!

Explosive Sequal to the Original

MGS2 remake, Substance, while having its flaws is most definitely one of the greatest games available on the PS2. The stealth action genre has many copycats (all well recieved by critics though). This time around we control a new FOX Hound infiltrator codenamed Raiden (real name Jack), and while it's a disppointment for Snake fans, Raiden controls just about the same and you'll soon get over it. Let's see why this is a great game...

Eyes and Ears: 4.5/5: While the graphics are definitely a huge step above MGS1 on the PSOne, the sound is conventially the same (or tweaked to a level but I didn't notice: the gunshot sounds, intense music, noise collision detection, and voice acting are just as fantastic as they were in the first game). Framerates are still smooth and while the cutscenes in the game are greatly acted with stellar dramatic animation, they are WAY TOO LONG, but more on that later. The camera work never hinders the action or the gameplay, because you have the free movement of looking wherever you want, but even as you move about, it's still very well placed. My only gripe with the visuals were the mostly plain colors used throughout the game. See, because of the story, there's only 2 places in the entire game you play through(you control Snake on a ship as an intro to the game, but it's short) so variety in areas is lacking, but the actual content of the game will soon get your mind off it.

Hands: 5/5: Again Hideo Kojima has made certain to give us super tight controls so navigation through this game is never a problem. Given all the control options there are, it's important that it's all responsive. Unfortunately, with so much there comes a learning curve, so make sure to read over the instruction manual before starting the game (thankfully a new feature in the game is a small tutorial of every available action move), but if you don't the new substance remake has a huge set of customizable virtual training missions, so get some practice if you've never played a MGS game before. This is also a fun extra after you've beat the game... time yourself and see how fast you can get through the training missions.

Brains: 5/5: While many complain that the story is a little too complex to comprehend (I admit I got lost with all the characters and their motives), don't worry too much about it, the core story is really all you need to know. Things actually become very interesting at the very end where Raiden encounters a surprise about his fellow comrades, and some brilliant philosophy is brought in.
As far as the gameplay, enemies are just as fun to take down as they were in the original MGS. Sneaking around them is also a blast. There is a rescue and protection mission that is pretty challenging also.

Hormones: 4.5/5: Everything in this game becomes more and more fun as you go along, as you'll become more accustomed to the controls and variety of moves. Although it's fun, it's not perfect. If there's one thing I didn't like it would have to be the feeling of being handheld throughout the game. The cutscenes seems to do a lot of what I could be doing myself, and if you die or "lose" a mission, you'll be able to start RIGHT where you left off, so challenge isn't really an issue here as there's no real "fear" in dying, know what I mean? (by this I mean, while some situations may be hard to get through, all it really takes is patience and a quick finger). The save anywhere option makes it even easier (though, I played it through on easy mode, try the hard or extra hard mode after finishing the game, it'll be great fun to play it through again.)
The extras on this new edition consist of a dogtag mode (where you can collect dogtags off henchmen thoughout the game, and collect them all in a folder, big deal). There's also a skateboard mode where you can Tony Hawk LITE your way through areas in the game on a skateboard and rack up points. While that's somewhat fun, don't expect Tony Hawk depth. So if you've already bought the original edition, there's really no reason to buy this one. But the big one here is the cut-scene length, at the end of the game there's one that lasts about a half hour! There's gotta be a better way of progressing the story along, it almost felt at times that I wasn't really a part of it. A "movie-game" is a good idea, just don't make it so much that the player feels like he actually IS watching a movie and NOT playing a video game.

Overall, keep in mind none of the flaws in this game are designer-type problems, like bad controls, idiotic puzzles, lazy level design, etc, but more of things you feel like nitpicking at, and I honestly couldn't think of a better way to do them to optimally progress the story along. The game is great, plain and simple, and with enthrall all fans of action/adventure/stealth type games.

You've heard plenty of good things about this game already, so here are the bad. I hate the very tedious Fatman level!!! Final battle sucks! Could have used a female playable character instead of Raiden. I've been replaying this game for a long time now, and I still hate the Fatmal level!!!
