I love this game!

Okami is one of the best PS2 games I have played in a long time! It's gameplay and art style are equally unique. You play as a god reincarnated as a white wolf, who has to save the world of Nippon from evil that has been reawakened.

Okami is based heavily around gods and the like, but it's not overwhelming to hear about. The game starts off with a fairly lengthy intro, which tells about how an evil being was locked up, only to be accidentally released 100 years later. Your typical storyline, right? Not really. While the storyline is similar to other games, the gameplay is not. This is mainly because you have at your disposal the Celestial Brush, which allows you to manipulate the scenery around you in one way or another. The only thing is, you have to find all 13 brush techniques you once knew. These techniques are found by completing the constellations you come across throughout your journey. While each technique is used at one point or another, there are a few that are used very frequently, such as Power Slash and Bloom.

Fights are actually kind of fun, even if they are fairly easy. You find, buy, or receive various weapons from characters. If you go to the Dojos you find here and there, you can learn new moves to use both in and out of fights. Throughout the landscape are Demon Scrolls, which put you into a small-ish enclosed area to fight monsters. Fortunately, these are optional, as they serve no real purpose in the game.

With every great game, there are some not-so-great elements. One is the voices of the characters. The voices are basically just babbling, which is kind of annoying at first, but for me, I actually kind of got used to it, so it's not that big of a deal. Sometimes the camera gets in the way of things, but other times it's very helpful. I've noticed that in some areas of the game, things seem to get a little slow and laggy. I don't know if it's something wrong on my end, or if it's just the game. But don't let that turn you off from buying this game, for the goods outweight the bads by a landslide!!!

I'm only 50 hours into the game, but I don't think I'm even near the end! This is a fairly lengthy game, especially if you do a lot of exploring and the multiple side quests you come across.

If you own a PS2, but not Okami, you are missing out on possibly the best game for the console!!!!! If you don't have a PS2, well, now you have a legitimate reason!

This game is a beautiful peice of art

This game is a beautiful peice of art, its stunning, interesting, full of beautiful lore and a wonderful whimsical story. The unique paint brush interface is truely spectacular and forces you to think and be creative as you make your way through this world.

You play as a wolf, who relates to the world as a once god trying to save the world from a disaster, and as you go, you can do good deeds to gain honor and make her stronger.

This game is just fantastic. if I could think better right now I would write a better reveiw haha. But I love this game it really is just about my favorite console game. I highly recomend it. if your not convinced, look up G4 tech TV's "Xplay" review of it, they have clips and also sing its praises.

Beauty and Adventure

Okami first caught my attention with the graphics. The art in this game is awe-striking (and isn't just reserved for the cutscenes - it lasts throughout the game). Amaterasu, the wolf that you play as, wields the celestial brush to alter the world. The interface of trying to paint with a joystick takes some getting used to but once you adjust it seems both smooth and creative. The story made it hard to pull myself away from this game and each time I started to rejoice that I had nearly completed the game the plot thickened and a new thread was introduced. Most of the characters and stories are based on Japanese folklore and tell a fascinating tale.
The gaming experience is great. One of the few adventure games that lives up to Zelda (and in some ways surpasses it). There are tons of sidequests to keep even the best gamer busy for a long time, even after the main storyline has run its course. The challenges are set on a good curve - easy and explanatory at the beginning and move toward puzzles that take more thinking or ingenuity to solve.
My only annoyance with the game was the battles. They seemed to be easily avoidable and not especially challenging. Occassionally you would run into a stronger character that was really complicated to fight and it was frustrating because I sometimes felt unprepared.
I still very highly recommend this game. I was enamored with it at the very beginning and still consider it an amazing game. definitely a worthwhile purchase.

This is probably one of the BEST games I've ever played! It has a long engaging story with wonderfully animated and Drawn Locations. Although some parts are a little gay, with flowers flying behind you and once you defeat someone they turn into flowers but its ignored most of the time. It's gameplay on the other hand is as fun as riding a rollercoaster! You have the powers of a god and can jump on and off walls, swing on vines. In the game you get to fight demons, dragons, and monkeys! The storyline is very interesting and makes you want to keep playing. There are cool bonuses once completing the game and funny ones. The side storys are a bit confusing but it all works out in the end. The beautiful lands of the world have been covered in darkness and the small village of Kamiki village was spared. Okami, and old hero of the village, a young wolf, has been reborn by the sun god, AMATERASU, he will save the world from the evil darkness and the villians behind it!
You are a GOD a HERO a HUNTER a SAVIOR, you are OKAMI!

Okami: An under-appreciated gem for the PS2

The recipient of multiple 2006 "Game of the Year" awards in both the U.S. and Japan, Okami adeptly combines a deep combat system, elaborate platforming enviroments, varied puzzles, original mini-games, and an epic story; into one of the most impressive action/adventure games in the history of PlayStation gaming. Most often compared to Nintendo's recent Legend of Zelda games, Okami borrows elements from many of the genre's best games, but it adds enough innovation to avoid feeling derivative.

The main character in Okami is a sun god named Amaterasu that has the form of a wolf. Playing an adventure game as a wolf may seem limiting, but it isn't in this case. Being a god you have the ability to wield a variety of magical weapons called divine instruments, which ride on your back, and jump into your mouth on their own when you attack. Hands aren't necessary for Amaterasu. When you need to carry a object that won't go into your inventory, you just carry it in your mouth. It is similar to playing as a humanoid action hero.

In addition to the usual jumping, dodging, and slashing; you also acquire, a magical paint brush (called the Celestial Brush) that is a key element in most of the gameplay. By drawing a variety of simple shapes in various sizes on the screen, you can achieve a variety of magical effects. The brush powers are essential for defeating some opponents, and overcoming environmental obstacles.

Amaterasu has four basic attributes: Solar energy (health) , ink pots (for the Celestial Brush), astral pouches (extra lives), and yen (wallet capacity). Each of the four attributes can be increased by spending praise; which represents the faith people, plants, and animals have in the gods. At the beginning of the game people have lost faith in the gods, so Amaterasu is weak. Amaterasu can increase her attributes by restoring faith in the gods by helping others. Removing demonic curses, feeding animals, making plants bloom, and helping people with various problems, all earn praise. The system works well, and it is gratifying at times to see the world restored before your eyes, and receive people's gratitude. It isn't tedious, the way "leveling-up" sometimes is in RPGs.

Amaterasu gains more powerful weapons as the game progresses, usually when bosses are defeated, but a few can be purchased. Some have extra effects related to the Celestial Brush. Amaterasu can also acquire holy artifacts that have useful powers. Holy artifacts can't be purchased, or found. Certain characters will trade them in exchange for demon fangs that are obtained by using brush techniques on demons just after they die, or with special attacks. The holy artifacts are not necessary, with one exception that you can only earn by helping someone. There are also martial arts schools where you can buy techniques that will increase your proficiency with weapons, or allow access to hidden areas.

Okami is set in feudal-era Japan, although you will encounter things there that seem out of place in that environment. The country is divided into areas separated by obstacles that require specific brush powers to overcome. Some of what you encounter will seem like just odd curiosities, until you acquire a certain brush power.

Your companion on nearly all of your adventure is a sprite named Issun, who is a wandering artist. Amaterasu understands Japanese, but can't speak. Issun does the talking when you encounter other characters, as well as giving information and hints when needed. Okami has no voice-acting at all. The characters speak gibberish in different tones, and express themselves physically; but all of the dialog must be read in text boxes. The game does have sound effects, and music that appropriately sets the mood. There are a number of cut scenes that are used to advance the impressive story. More than once when it seems as though you are close to the end, a new area and threat is revealed; and you realize that it isn't anywhere near over. There are plenty of plot twists to keep it interesting, and while it sometimes seems predictable, it almost never actually is. You will need 70 hours or more to experience everything that the game has to offer.

The art style and graphics are meant to resemble Japanese brush paintings, and are impressive artistically; but unlike any other game I have seen. The controls work very well, although it does take some practice to draw precisely with the Celestial Brush using the analog thumb-stick.

What is wrong with the game? The camera is occasionally uncooperative, but no worse than in any other 3D game I have played. 95% of the time you can get the angle you need. The difficultly level is tuned for Japanese gamers. If you thought that "Jak and Daxter" was too easy because you defeated all of the bosses on your second attempt, you will have the same issue with Okami. You may defeat all of the bosses on the first attempt. That isn't to say that Okami is an easy game. The platform segments, puzzles, and timed mini-games provide plenty of challenge.

Okami isn't impressive technically; but it delivers an epic, engaging, story with finely-tuned gameplay and imaginative level design. Okami is a great value.

One of the best games I have ever played, period.

This is one of the best games I have ever played, hands down. In a market made of ever-homogeneous 1st/3rd person shooters, I found this to be a refreshingly original game. The artwork is beautiful. The soundtrack is epic. The gameplay is satisfying, fun, and engaging. It certainly helps to be a dog lover because, in this game, you get to be a dog!
The game has me completely immersed...The people responsible for the look and feel, the "completeness" of the game world, did an incredible job. I think the icing on the cake is the fact that, as the dog, there is even a button to "Bark" that has no other function as far as I've seen...you can just bark at stuff. Another good part too, is that it is a LONG game! It just seems to keep going and going...I think I'm at about 30 hours, and there's no end in sight. Hooray, Game!

Honestly, I would almost go out on a limb and say that it is more of a work of art than anything else.

As a lifelong musician, artist, video game enthusiast, and a professional computer programmer, I am completely blown away on every concievable level, as if you couldn't already tell. A "Must Play" if there ever was one, in my humble opinion, of course :)

Okami is underrated

Okami is a fun and beautiful game. With a good storyline and different and interesting battle techniques, I think it is one of the best games that gets overlooked.
In Okami, you use a "divine" brush with 13 different techniques you must aquire throughout the game. You use these in battle and in various situations. You travel with a wandering artist Isshun (sp?) who really makes the game funny. Not only is the graphics unique and beautiful, the gameplay is awesome. Fun and exciting battles but a whole bunch of mini games and side trips that are very entertaining. I really recommend this game to all ages and people.

Didn't know that not only Japanese but also many American people played this game and like it:) Many reviews makes me proud of Japanese traditional culture.
I never played English version, but it must be the same..

This game is loved by many Japanese that the story reflects old Japanese ages good aspects. "Amaterasu-Omikami" which is the name of the "Sun", considered as a greatest god in Shinto religion in Japan. This is the story of this god, which looking is a cute white dog, helpes the people. He could use the other god's power, because he is the god of the Sun, most powerful god considered in Shinto religion.
I think playing this game will also help you understanding Japanese traditional culture and value.

The Art and the Music is also the old Japanese style, and we, many Japanese love it!! If you can't play game well but have some interests in Japanese traditional music, listening the sound track of this game will help you a lot.
Playing this game reminds me the old good ages of Japan. If you study Shinto religion, I am sure that you can find the story of Amaterasu-Omikami(Okami). In shinto religion, there's many gods of nature and spirits and that is why we could accept different religion from different countries. I am the follower of Jesus, but there is no problem playing this game. This is one of the most famous story in Japan, the story of Okami!

In my opinion, this is the absolute best Playstation 2 game! It is awesome! What can be better than playing a wolf goddess who saves the world by painting. Has lots of action, adventure, problem-solving, and humor! A must have! Especially for those who like to draw. The Visuals are incredible beautiful. And the gameplay keeps you coming back to play again.
