This game is great. It's all that i ever do anymore. First I really got into the single player, and once i was through with that, (because it is kind of short), I started the multiplayer. The multiplayer is some of the best i have played in a long time, because you don't just die as soon as you respawn without knowing what happened (like in quake 3 or unreal tournament, and there are all sorts of different game types to play. The keyboard controls are a little wierd, but if you have a microsoft sidewinder precision pro or force feedback 2 it is really easy to figure out. What i did (i don't know if they still have this offer) was i got the game with a force feedback 2 joystick, for like [price], which is a pretty good deal. Anyway, as far as this stacks up against other Mecha games, it is definately better than MW2, but i have never actually played MW3, but i don't know how it could be better than this game. The only thing that bugged me about MW4 was the mechlab and the way that it worked, but i soon got used to it. This game rocks.

Recommended to Buy!

Mechwarrior 4 is one of the best looking games i have ever played. The only other game that looks this good and has a good story line is Max Payne. When the IS and Clan Mech' Paks are purchased it takes the game to new dimensions. One of the great features in this game is that the cheats come built into the options menu so you don't have to do all these fancy keystrokes just to do some thing minor. Online play is beautifully set up graphically and option wise. All in all this is a great game and any expansion pack just makes it better.

MW series is still the best round (4/1/2 stars)

Actually, ive only played the demo of MW4--the first 2 missions. The voice acting was so-so, yes, but please. ive played games like future cop: LAPD, and SOF (at a friends house), so compared to them, this game has quite good acting.

The Mech lab is revamped, in a good way, from MW2 and definately MW3. (You could do nothing in MW3 from what i could tell, but it was OK in MW2). The fact that you can only place certain weaps on certain parts SORT OF makes sense--if you're piloting a marauder you're not gonna stick an SRM pod on the arm. But you could easily put a gauss rifle there. so that may need work, but it does make sense. You're not gonna stick a PPC on the huge missile rack of a warhammer, either.

The next thing i noticed was that in-game, the weapons were a LOT simpler to use. The controls were mostly that of MW2. The only caveat i found was that turning your torso just a leeeeetle to the right was difficult, as until it began to turn majorly, it ROCKETED right over, making targeting impossible. Yes, the other problem was that unlike MW2 you couldn't shoot the legs out from under a mech. Don't make much sense, but maybe thats just my targeting ability :) i bet if you actually bothered to aim, you could easily. (despite what anyone says, legs are still the best way to kill a mech). I was actually able to do some damage on my first try, but it is not an ez game. It will take many tries until you get the hang of mech strategy. and if you play FPS's where you are a non-moving shooter, you will have a very bad habit to break.

Overall, the few caveats they put in just HAPPENED to be big ones. but not big enough to make me NOT buy this game as soon as i get a good computer. But as for you, the reader, you do have a good computer. Buy it. (And whilst you are at it, pester microsoft, the evil empire, to release it for the mac!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!)

if you don't have it don't buy it

The action, storyline, plot, and weapons are good. Multiplayer is decent and is actually something you can get good at(unlike quake 2 where jumping around like a ping-pong ball is the only tactic). There is only one thing annoying about this game. Whenever a new sound effect plays, there is a slight pause for the first time. After that it plays smoothly until the end of the mission, so its not so bad but if there is like 8 or so mechs fighting you with different weapons it can get confusing.

Single player game doesn't keep your interest too long, but does well enough to teach you the things you need to survive in the online battlefield. And that's where the real action is at. But not all of you might have high bandwidth connection...or if you do it's giving you problems (Like mine is >:|). Do not despair, as the bots will give you more then enough challenge to keep you occupied.

Set the bot skill to 9...spawn about 5 of them. Give them Assault mechs and try to survive with a light mech. Always a fun way to spend your free time.

An amazing robot game!

I have been a collector of 'mech games for seven years now. I have always thought that the mech games were cool, but when I bought Mech Warrior 4 I was truly impressed. The game is not hard to learn and the controls are easier than they used to be. You are in a 40 foot, 75 ton robot called a battlemech, made for war and to eliminate the enemy. The game has different difficulty settings so if you are a bigginer you can still have a ball.

Graphics: the graphics are amazing. Every once in a while you can be shooting at someone and think you are in a dream. You can take high-quality screenshots of battle too. Graphics don't get much better than this! (four 4 1/2 stars)

System: the system is one of the only put-downs to the game. The game is very high quality and has not once yet crashed or frozen. The trouble is that you have to have a pretty hardy system. 300 Mhz, 64 mg RAM and it may not say you do but you need to have at least 1.1 Gb. of memory to play it good. Even more if you play multi-player because you need to download the updates. (3 stars)

Plot and Gameplay: These are what divides regular games from mech warrior 4. The plot is pretty thick in this one, where you are the nephew of a duke and one of your enemies have claimed the throughn. Their power is stronger than yours and you have to build up forces and take them out mission by mission and there are plenty of them. They have a variety of missions from brainless overpower the enemy and wipe them out, to strategic methods to position your mechs to ambush the enemy, or to defend a very delicate building from a layer of attackers. This is what makes the game so fun! (5 stars)

Multiplayer: This is my favorite aspect of the game. Multi player has an elaborate attendance. With updates downloaded from the internet ... you can play other people around the world. There is little lag and you can play it with just a dial-up modem. You can join groups called clans (this game is based off a series of books called Battletechs) and fight other clans with various types of games. Some ore free-for-all and team free-for-all and capture the flag and extreme strategy is required for multiplayer. (5 stars)

This game is my actual favorite game and I recomend that you buy it. Remember that Mech Warrior 4 Merceneries is coming out in November so keep your eye out! God bless!

I bought this because my computer was too new to run Mechwarrior 3, which in my opinion was a great game. Well, this one surprised me many times over. The graphics were the first surpise. They were on par with games I have from 1995, and were much worse than Mechwarrior 3. The weapons-loudout screen is better in ways...but all mechs can only carry around 1/3 of what they used to be able to. And now hardpoints can only carry certain items (ballistic, missile, beam, and Omni). While I agree to some extent to this (missile racks shouldn't be able to carry Gauss rifles), they brought it to such an extreme that any good loudout is virtually impossible. Many points that should have had the capability of carrying anything (Omni hardpoint), were often limited to ballistic weapons (guns and autocannons), or something like that.
_The aiming system has switched from the direct mouse cursor control that was in MW3, and gone back to the "center your mech on your target". This makes targeting a pain in the neck, because it isn't as smooth as it was in previous games. It's rather jerky and hard to do anything effective. Using the mouse helps greatly, though.
_An interesting quirk is that it's impossible to tell which weapon group you have selected. Why? Because they set up the controls so you can fire any weapon group at any time. So why would you need to know anyway? Becuase in the middle of combat, it's combersome to reach a hand up and hit a certain key when you're trying to do something...but they have a key where you can just fire the currently selcected weapon group (GREAT help if you're using mouse targeting). But to figure out what you have selected, you have to fire them.

_Overall: if you haven't played a previous Mechwarrior game, get it. You'll have nothing to be dissapointed in. If you really liked Mechwarrior 3 AND it works on your system, save your money. The only thing this game has going for it is one or two new weapon systems.

The best yet! (exsept Black Night)

It's the best mech game yet with lots of expanions! 21 different mechs,3 light,5 medium,8 heavy,5 assult. there's a mechlab to costomize your mech(it dosn't change the mechs look),change it's armor, electroinc, jumpjets, weapons, paint and other stuff. Then it's time to battle you can do misson play, wave and others, misson play is many different missons, wave is you get to choose 4 diffrent mechs to battle. then change the map, day or night, your mech, and lacemates and their mechs.
Also choose heat or off, invicability on or off, unlimitid ammo on or off, and slash dammage on or off in the options section.
