Microsoft Keeps the Series Alive...

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 4
Date: August 08, 2001
Author: Amazon User

Before I start my review, I would like to take this time to issue a warning: Do NOT get this game if you have a dangerously low tolerance for explosions and/or a middle-class computer. MechWarrior 4 packs in so much detail and speed that viewing this game is especially tough on slow computers (our computer actually filed a lawsuit against us for first-degree assault). Anyway, to avoid your computer trying to slash your credit rating (or something much more sinister) please use a Pentium III or equivalent. Another thing to mention is that this is a testosterone-fueled game, and will NOT help your computer's inferiority complex. Now, onto to the review!:

MechWarrior 4 can be placed in the category of Robot Action. There are several other games that fall into this genre: Virtua On and all of the other MechWarrior series. In most Robot Action genres, you control robots with a wide array of weapons in an interactive arena. You will verse other robots in these arenas in attempts to kill, or blow up, these other robots. This genre will usually contain: Sci-fi violence, very little or no gore, and little language. This game is no exception; it is rated Teen.

MechWarrior 4's gameplay is very fun. This can be linked to its weapon blasting, fast-paced, techno-blasting style. The game has both single player and multiplayer modes. Both are unique and have much to offer. MechWarrior also adds a Mechlab in which you can customize your favorite mechs to a huge extent. Its music and sound effects heighten the MechWarrior experience. To give you a closer look at MechWarrior I shall go into each of these subjects individually:

Single Player Campaign: This mode pits you in the body of Ean Desari, an adolescent boy whose father was just killed because he refused and boycotted a trade. His death starts a small rebellion that includes you, Ean Desari. The campaign leads you on seven different sets of missions until you overthrow the "evil empire". To gain good MechWarrior experience, you will have to take this mode.

Instant Action: To quickly build up your skills, this mode is the best. Featuring four different ways to battle (Mission Play, Wave, Master Trials and Tutorial) this mode is fun, challenging, and most of all, the very best. And I'm not kidding when I say this mode is the best.

Mechlab: This isn't really a mode, as it is a trivial feature of MechWarrior. It appears in the Instant Action mode, the Single Player Campaign, and the Multiplayer Mode. The Mechlab allows you to take an already made mech and change everything from weapons to individual points of armor. It's surprising to see how much your favorite mech can change! This mode is the greatest in the one-player modes, as you can make perfect teams.

Multiplayer: Now in MechWarrior you can play against people from around the world; and like most online games you can chat with your team. The chat is concentrated on the battle so you don't get any riffraff chat like "any fems here" etc... The Multiplayer Mode has much more options if you host a game. Some examples are: Restrict Mechs and/or Components, and Choose Your Type of Game (there are several different modes; each fun and unique). Even if you don't have some buddies to play with, you can use a computer player (called bots) that are supplied by ZoneStats. If you don't have a high-speed modem, then don't worry: I have a 24.4 kb. modem and I still get pumped up graphics and sound.

THE FINAL WORD:

This game is an absolute blast! Tons of weapons, a very flexible design, and a long and gripping single player campaign make this a great buy. Of course, the need for a great computer ... and the steep price are a bit on the con side of things. However, there are too many great things about this game to stop you from buying it. You will get your moneys worth. You will be satisfied. And most of all, You will not regret buying it.

Microsoft kills yet another good game

Don't even bother. MS seemed more interested in cutsey videos than improving the game. Earlier versions were good because they could be played effectively with a keyboard. Now it seems you need a MS force feedback joystick just to tromp around. What happened to the MLB's? This game elicits no emotions. I had trouble getting away from the MW3, but MW4 is already in the back of the drawer after two weeks. TOO Bad.

the worst game of the year

I bought mechwarrior4 and started playing the training phase and that's where I realized the mistake of buying this game.If you use a SideWinder joystick you'll find that the throttle does not work as it did in the previous mech games, and there is little you can customize even when you get a clan mech, what's the deal?As you progress into the game you find yourself going against 4-5 mechs with two dunerheads for lancemates that might shoot you as well as the enemy. Fire control is pretty much a loss, and the targeting almost as bad,if I could talk to the makers of this I would ask them what they where thinking,it is really to bad that the games came to this end I have all the mechwarrior game and this one is the worst.

A solid game

I have been a long time Mechwarrior fan and before that a Battletech nut. Much of Mechwarrior 4 has been reinvented to be a better experience for gamers in general. The Mechs are extremely detailed and sharp and move more like they should. The weapon effects are good and the weapons are much more balanced. The campaign, while longer, seemed to easy even up in to the hardest settings. While the missions are well designed most are forgettable search and destroy types. I really like just wandering around the map, the environment is much more populated than in MW3 adding to the feel of being in something huge.

To be totally honest and fair there were a few things that I wanted to see and did not. I liked the story but I felt uninvolved, if I am the main character I would like to see more of what is going on beyond the mission briefing screen. The game is told to you in a little window in the corner, I would have liked big between mission cut scenes like in Starsiege. The inside of the cockpit lacks much detail, a step backwards from MW3. The new Mechlab is much better, but they have limited what I can and can not do to my Mech. Yes, this is better balanced and easier to use, but very simply I want to decide to use and I did not like it that the option wasn't there for me. Still, none of this detracts to much from a great game.

Three words

Let me start by saying three words. BUY THIS GAME. Now that I have gotten that out of my system Im going to give you reosons for youre new purchace. The action for this game is amazing and a reason enough to buy this game but thats not all this game has to offer. Storyline is important to me and all of the mek warrior series has it. There are apparantly 16 games made and so they have a lot to draw from. The acting is not memorable but looking at the people who have gotten oscars rescently it looks like good actors are hard to find (and no Im not an old man ranting about how good the actors where in the fiftys). The multi player is the best I have ever played and gives yet another reason for teens to not go outside (only joking). You can take this game as far as you want or as short as you want. the controls are easy compared to the games that came before but can become more advanced the more you learn. The expansion pack is on its way which should make it an even better game. all in all this game is a must and if youre computer can take it you have to get it.

Great Game!!! Buy It!!!

Over the years many games about the battletech universe has appeared, the computer games especially. The games are usually very fun,you drive mechs, giant robots, into the battle field and encounter a diverse set of opponents. The best part of the game is the ability to customize your mech with different weapons, second also there is a good amount of mechs you can choose. The graphics are phenominal, the lasers illnminate the screen, the explosions are nice, the computer opponents are good (not dummys that stand and fire aimlessly), and the missions are challenging. Everything in the game is interactive, stand near a exploding mech you get damaged, destroy a fuel tank while you are near it you get damaged, ram a vhecile you destroy it, damaging a helicopter it falls and crashes (if you're under it while it falls, Uh- oh). Over all the game is nice and worth a while, it's also a great buy.

Fun but too short

Pros-Fun. Smooth graphics, easy to use the mechlab and a pretty good story.

Cons-Way too short. The campaign is not more than a short weekends worth. If you are not into playing this game online, there is very little replay value in this game.

But the game is cool and fun to play. If you don't mind not having a game you will play for months, it's pretty good.

Good, but not great

The graphics are incredible, but Microsoft definately sanitized the MechWarrior we all know and love.

Another bummer is there is no autopilot and no satellite uplink.

The game is worth playing, but I would wait until it's on the bargain shelf.

Best PC game in Battletech system

This game is great! It was released a few years ago but they have never written another game for this IP. I can't understand why. Microsoft got the Battletech (or Mechwarrior) license whey the aquired Wizards of the Coast. It has a loyal fanbase and lots of people still play the game even though it is a few years old and the graphics are a bit dated. Don't get me wrong, the graphics were stellar for their time and they are still pretty good, but compared to the newest games on the market today you can definately tell it is an older game.

However, this shouldn't stop you from getting a copy as this is a unique and enjoyable first or third person view shooter style game. The large number of 'Mechs available keeps the game from getting stale and the almost endless combination of weapons loadouts ensure that no two 'Mechs on the battlefield are exactly alike. If you buy this game you should also buy the 'Mech packs and the expansion packs. Definately worth it.

Not what I expected

This game is a complete disappointment from the other Mech games. The new mechlab takes away a players creativeness by restricting the weapons a mech can carry. The controls are completely hideous. The only thing about this game that catches my eye is the graphics.

If you are a returning Mechwarrior, looking for another great game, then I don't recommend this one. Microsoft has taken a great line of games and completely screwed it up.
