After playing through Mechwarrior 3, I could not wait to play 4. I downloaded the demo, and the graphics were beautiful, but the gameplay just wasn't as fun as 3. But I gave it the benifit of the doubt and thought the story in the full version would make up for it. I was very, very, very wrong. This has to be the most boring story ever. Not only that, the voice acting and videos are extremely boring and the actors just act like they don't care. Mechwarrior 3's voice acting was superb, everytime my commander in the MFB said something, i really made sure to listen. But geez, these guys just don't care. Plus the video quality is terrible compared to MW3, really choppy and botched colors. This is what microsoft does; they take a good name and try to make it all flashy and cute when it doesn't need it. Mechwarrior 3 was a true Mech simulation, this is just a flashy ... arcade game.

Close but not quite.

If you are a long time player of Mech games, then heres how to gauge MW4: If you loved MW3, you'll hate (or at least be very dissapointed with) MW4. If you hated MW3, than you'll love MW4. There are many intelligent improvements made in MW4, but ultimately, the look and feel of the game is painfully cartoonish and hard to take seriously. The actors portaying the storyline fall far short of the mark in conveying the intended drama of the story. Missions are fairly interesting, music is superb (composed by Duane Decker, who also did the soundtrack of the MW3 expansion 'Pirates Moon'), terrain detail is astounding, and the early lunar missions skyline is awe inspiring; But despite these pros and a few others, MW4 just doesn't deliver the impact it should. As far as this pilot is concerned, Mechwarrior 3 is king of the battlemech games, even though its not perfect either. If your thinking of MW4; save the cash and spend half of it on the MW3 that comes with Mechcommander Gold and Pirates Moon(...). But dont take my word for it, look at some pics from 3 and some from 4; Then choose your mech...to each his, or her, own.

A less than average game.

This game really isn't worth your time. Microsoft has gutted it. Many people may be raving about the graphics, and the story line; but honestly, the story line isn't any better than mech 3's, and what's the point of great graphics if the gameplay is horrible? Microsoft has done three things that have really destroyed this game. The most noticeable is that the mech handling has been greatly speed up. The speed at which you can turn around in this is something I would expect from a 150 pound person--not a 100 ton mech! Microsoft has also made the control system incomprehensible. The first 3 mech games were simple enough, but this one is impossible to figure out. Finally, the mech lab makes it impoosible to have any variety. The game gives you only one or two options for what you can do to your mech. This igame is not worth it--buy mech 3.

hmmm ... something not quite right

I loved the old mech. games, and although this modern one is very much like them but with incredibly improved graphics, something does not seem quite right.

Something emotional is not there ... the old game was better, or perhaps because it was a new concept it was fresh and exciting.

I highly recommend you get a demo and play it to see if you like it, especially if you played the old mech.

PS: it is nearly impossible with a force feedback joystick, every step the mech takes wrenches the stick about, making it hard to hit a building let alone another mech!

Great graphics, great sound, but FMV that's as bad as 1996.

In the old days of games, right after Windows 95 made it easy for developers to include videos based on an already installed MPEG decoder, FMV (Full Motion Video) was all the rage. Games by several different publishers appeared, including Seirra and Origin. It's best to say that in most of these, the combination of terrible actors, poor video quality, and sound recordings that made stronger men then I weep didn't bode well, and eventually 99% of games dropped the standard. Wing Commander III & IV were different because they choose to use actual actors and sets, setting a standard never repeated. But in most games, voice actors could be hired for less and either animation or in-game cinematics could be used.

Enter Mechwarrior IV. At it's core, it's a mechwarrior simulation with great graphics, a good story, fun multiplayer, and great arcade action.... but you have to sit through some of the WORST FMV EVER MADE to play the game. You can skip it, yes, but then you miss the plot that's semi-actually-interesting, and so eventually you start playing the game just for the multiplayer, because the FMV is **THAT** bad. Terrible, horrible FMV acting. I have no idea why the developers MS employeed thought that they had the formula to resurrrect a standard from non-suckitude, but they didn't, and the FMV hurts me so much I've never been able to complete this game because I just can't stand to see another FMV.

Other than that, the game rocks.

What A Let Down

If you are a fan of mechWarrior3 you are going to be really disapointed with 4. They are totally different games that share a similuar concept. You can forget building the mega killer Mech in this game. The Ultra 20 Auto cannon is gone, the largest is a 5. The Mechs have hardend weapon points that limit your ability to custom build what you want. Take the Thor for instance it has a missile rack on the torso. Well that torso is now a hard point for missiles only. Arm, and torso critical spaces have specified spots for specified weapon types. Its like you are being dictated too as to what you can put where. The Mech lab is poorly constructed, and much more difficult to keep up with your Mechs load out. Those of us that really enjoy the fast paced games of unlimited ammo and awesome auto cannon firepower in MechWarrior3 will have no place in MechWarrior4, we were not taken into consideration. I won't speak much on the graphics, they are great, but how can you enjoy the graphics of a game you cannot enjoy. The seven new mechs, full customability, all new terrain features, the 16 player on line game, what a let down. But the box is pretty cool looking.

Like Multi-player Action?

If you do, then buy this game and you will never leave your house! If you have a high-speed internet connection, you'll likely find that this game is more addicting than crack.

The single-player campaign options are fun, but I just use them for practice for the multi-player. THAT's where the fun is! I forget to eat when I'm playing, and have probably lost 10 pounds in the past month..

I highly recommend you pay the extra money and get a microsoft sidewinder joystick. The game is built around this joystick, and it really makes the game much more enjoyable. Your standard gamepad is practically useless.

Learning the game was easy. The mechlab is great, allows you to tweak the perfect mech to your liking.

Incredible!

This game is awesome! You are in total control of how the mission goes. Being able to outfit your mech (the huge battle machine you pilot) makes for a good experience once you get out there and the enemy is pounding on you. You can choose what weapons your mech carries, how much armor it has, even what kind of paint job it wears! The mission play is very cool, the battle field makes you employ tactics- how you confront the enemy, how well you use your surroundings, there are even items on the ground that will help you win the fight. You dont feel like your watching what happens from affar, you deffinately get the sense that your there- making everything unfold the way it does. The graphics are top of the line. An emensely satisfiying game, this deffinately five-stars!

This Game kills!

I first got hooked on Mechwarrior when i was 6. i played mech 2 and mech3. Now, here is mech 4, the greatest of them all. the game has come a long way. in mechwarrior 2, you could destroy the toughest mech in the game in only 6 shots from the weakest weapon(and this is with no cheats). in mech 4, you need to shoot a mech a lot of times to destroy it. this makes the game more realistic. the weapons are also top of the art. the graphics are great for weapon fire!
In mech 2, the PPC, a 'strong' weapon was a simple ball of blue that took a million years to reach it's target(and it's a beam weapon. Right!). Pathetic! in mech 4, the PPc is a blue lightning bolt like object that takes like a millisecond to reach it's target! Much more real!
the graphics are also majorly advanced. It looks much more like the real planet. it has landscaping and the cities look like real cities.
My final comment is the jump jets. in mech 2, you can jump a 100 ton mech 200+ meters into the air. Now is that really posible? No. in mech 4, the jump jets can boost a 100 ton mech about 20+ meters into the air(not counting it's height).
MECHWWARRIOR HAS COME A LONG WAY. IF YOU WANT A GOOD GAME OF THE MECHWARRIOR FAMILY, I RECOMMEND MECHWARRIOR 4.

I had a lot of fun with this game. While I'm not really into first-person shooters, this one actually delivered some great gameplay in a very unique gaming world. The game does have a few minor games; however, overall it's easily worth the price.

Gameplay: You pilot huge robots armed to the teeth and kill other robots similarly armed. Period. There is a story line with the single-player campaign, but it's quite forgettable. The real fun lies in customizing your mech in the mechlab and getting to battle. There are 25 missions in the campaign, and overall they are quite good. Some of the missions are rather easy and you can finish them in a few minutes. Others are very hard and will take several re-tries (and an occasional lowering of the difficulty level for those of us who are not experts at Mechwarrior games). The interface is pretty clean and useful, and I was able to navigate just fine with my old Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad. Unfortunately, this games does suffer from the same minor, but irritating, problems of past games in the series. For example, the mission briefings can still be vague and long-winded, and sometimes you'll have to play out a mission 1 or 2 times unsuccessfully just to figure out what you're supposed to do. Also, you can't save in the middle of a mission. This wouldn't be a problem if the missions were fairly short, but many of them are not. Finally, AI opponents fight well and use good tactics, but AI allies (lancemates) can have some pathfinding issues.

Graphics: The game looks very good, even today. The mechs have good detail, and the weapon effects are great. Even the terrains are nice to look at. Footage of human actors are used for mission briefings, and the introductory movie is Hollywood quality. Some of the environments are destructible, but not in a major way.

Sounds: The developers outdid themselves here. The sound effects are superb and very appropriate. Also, the soundtrack for the game is worth buying separately. Voice acting is good, but sometimes a little cheesy and over the top. Overall, the game's sounds are done well.

Techical matters: With the patch, the game was very stable on my computer. It came with a very useful instruction manual as well. Overall, the single-player campaign lasted me about 20-25 hours. I don't think the campaign has much replay appeal, but thankfully you can do player vs. computer skirmishes under various conditions and play against other people online.

Overall, Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance is a very good game, and perhaps the best one in the series. It's fairly easy to learn and is well put together. I recommend it to anyone into sci-fi gaming or shooters.
