Don't Let Hype Ruin This Great Game (4.5 stars)

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

Of course when you hear that a new game is coming out by the guys who brought you "Grand Theft Auto 3," lots and lots of unwanted and unwelcome hype is going to come out of the smoke and will ruin the game for everyone. This game was SO OVERHYPED that it led to people disliking the game. Listen loud and clear: THIS IS NOT "GRAND THEFT AUTO 3!" THIS GAME HAS A NAME OF ITS OWN AND IS SUPPOSED TO BE DIFFERENT FROM "GTA 3!" If you want "GTA 3," then buy the game for crying out loud and stop complaining that this is not like "GTA 3." I played this game with an open mind, and I played it MORE THAN ONCE before deciding my verdict on it. I feel that a lot of people played it for three minutes and decided, "Eh, it stinks!" It's a shame because I feel that this is a very good game and goes to very creative levels much like previous Rockstar games.

There are different modes you get to play and different missions for you to do. The whole game is basically rioting and looting in order to take down the corporation. You get to pick up objects and throw them through store windows. (Didn't get that in "GTA 3," now did ya?) While roaming through packs of maniac looters in outrageous crowds, it is your job to create as much mayhem as possible. You can either do missions or create mayhem on your own.

The coolest part of this game is that you can use body parts as weapons. That's right; find a leg, arm, or a head on the floor, pick it up and bash people to death with them. As disgusting as that sounds, it's actually quite humorous and entertaining. A little cartoonish in a way, but still very cool.

(ALTHOUGH THIS GAME IS NOT AS BAD AS "GTA 3," THIS IS NOT A GAME FOR YOUNGER PLAYERS. IT'S VERY GRAPHICH AND ADULT ORIENTED.)

Now, is there as much freedom in this game as "GTA 3?" Of course not, but that's okay. The graphics are really great and the pace and loading of the game is very fast. There's so many things going on at once that it blows your mind trying to pay attention to one little thing, that being good and bad. The only major disappointment is the control of the game; it's frustrating and very poor. It's very hard to throw objects or shoot at one particular target. But besides that, it's still a very good game. The best mode in the game is "Chaos," being that there's more of an opportunity for you to do whatever you want than in "Revolution" mode. If you want some cool cheats for this game, check out www.gameshark.com. There's a ton of them!

Like I said, this is NOT "GTA 3," so if that's going to disappoint you, then don't buy it and save yourself the whining and complaining. Don't listen to the hype and play this game with an open mind. Play it more than once before writing a review that bashes it. You don't have to buy it; just rent it and see for yourself. Despite the very poor control, "State of Emergency" is a very wild and unpredictable game that can lead to hours and hours of fun. Play it for yourself before you make any decisions on it.

This game is great, but don't be expecting a GTA 3 out of it because you will be dissapointed if you buy it thinking that. You get a good supply of weapons (flame thrower, AK47, pistol, uzi, pepper spray, and others weapons including park benches and other hand held weapons.) It is definitly one of Rockstar's best. If you are old enough or your parents dont mind body parts flying all over the screen when you blow them up with a rocket launcher you should get it. You can also use heads, arms and other body parts after blowing them up.

Best Violent game!

Rocktar Entertainment kicked ass when they first came out with this game! It is still the leader in Violent Video Games, anywhere from grenade launchers, mini gun, rocket launcher, and even your classic pistol, you can be a good guy and shoot only the gang members and corporation or you can be a fool in either Kaos or Revolution and kill everyone in your site, last clone standing is fun since at the end it says "CONGRATULATIONS YOUV'E KILLED EVERYBODY!" if you like violence, by this game and look at other Rockstar games they rock!

Disappointing

As someone who doesn't play a lot of video games, I bought this game because I thouroughly enjoyed Grand Theft Auto 3 (the best game ever!!!). There is so much going on at one time in this game that it is hard to keep track of the people around you, who is attacking you, and who you are supposed to help. This game is revolutionary from the standpoint that there is so much going on in one screen, but thats pretty much it. The missions are somewhat monotonous and the chaos mode is somewhat pointless (kind of like a practice session for the other modes). Rockstar Games is definitely the best game-producing outfit out there, but this one falls short of the level GTA3 reached.

Not a classic, but fun nonetheless

After GTA, I admit I was expecting a lot from this game. Largely, it delivered. Having owned it for a few days, I must admit I'm not hooked on the missions yet. So far, they are short and the storyline isn't particulary engaging. However, the Kaos mode is a blast. The object is simple -- run through a mall, city, etc taking out as many bad guys (government agents, gang members) and destroying as many things as you can. The assortment of weapons are great and you pick them up as you run along. The best part of the game is the total mayhem on screen. There are characters running everywhere... big explosions... lots of carnage. This is a great game in the "button mashing", shoot 'em up genre. I'm sure I'll play it every few days for some serious stress release, but it's not the engaging story that GTA represented. Still, State of Emergency is a winner and you should definitely check it out!

State of Bad Camera Angles

Take Grand Theft Auto 3--remove the cars, remove the great soundtrack, make the missions tedious and screw up the game camera, and you have State of Emergency.

There's some fun to be had--blowing up stuff, sending an explosive rocket into a crowd of people, scrambling away from a mob of club wielding guards, etc. However, poor mission design and a game camera that doesn't cooperate (e.g., you're firing a maching gun and the camera faces you rather than your oponents, forcing you to shoot at enemies you can't even see) make this a game to skip. Get Grand Theft Auto 3 instead.

GTA3 Hopeful?

I went and picked up a copy of State of Emergency when it was released yesterday and boy was I disapointed. I was very psyched to get this game as I've been reading previews of it for months on the web and all the hype about it has been nothing but good. But this game is a definete waste of money. First of all, the graphics are sub par and the camera angle can be very annoying at times. The controls are ok, but you can only hold one weapon at a time. The thing that made me the most mad was the actual game. The game comes off immature and childish. The "missions" are not fun and just plain annoying and the user interface is confusing as hell. I am a very big fan of GTA3 and this game can't hold a candle to it. I think they should have taken themselves a little more seriously when making this game. I returned the game today and picked up Drakan: Ancients' Gates and that game is awesome.

2 stars for a good attempt at a storyline and the fun factor of whooping everyone's butt with multiple weapons, but gets very old very quick. Stay away and make it a renter.

Only fun if you like repitition

Here are two reasons why you shouldn't buy this game:

1. Mercenaries

2. Any Grand Theft Auto Game after GTA2

This is bad

This game is the epitomy of every aspect of what is wrong with our society. The fact that resistance is commodified by a video game destroys any true struggle for freedom from corporate oppression. The actions taken by real people to resist the WTO (which this is a parody of) are being laughed at and construed into a cartoon and sold to angsty children to feel like they can be part of the action. Stop pacifying rage and alienation by packaging the outlet into a dead end like a video game. To all the people that want to resist corporate domination of your lives, put down the controllers and look on the internet for info about how the real action only comes from learning about how capitalism and the state destroys the Earth and humanity itself. Forget about the game - take real action, and organize your friends and community to be self sufficient. Of course now that this game is out, government officials have every opportunity at their hands to make a scapegoat for the "problems" of protesters in America. They can point the finger at the game as a cause for the "violence," instead of themselves. Free your mind, don't clog it with senseless pacifiers like this!!!!!

If you were expecting Grand Theft Auto...

then you should have bought the game with that title. This game is NOT Grand Theft Auto and any expectation that it should be is just ridiculous. That is my complaint about today's gamers... they all seem to want to repeat the same great idea in EVERY game once a good game comes out. The reason that Grand Theft Auto was great was because it WASN'T like any other game out there. Now I see the basic complaint about State of Emergency is that it's not Grand Theft Auto. Of course it's not. They would have named it Grand Theft Auto: Emergency if they wanted you to think that it was.

Now about State of Emergency. Personally, I think the game is great. Especially the Chaos mode were you really don't have mission but you can run around the city destroying stuff. In my opinion it does play out like a riot and it allows you to engage in that guilty indulgence without getting physically hurt. I like how you can pick up chairs, guns, garbage cans, rocket launchers, molotov cocktails and more. It's cool how you can blow up buildings, trucks and cars. This game is just insanity and really lots of fun.

So why 4 stars and not 5? There are some areas that this game could have done better. For one, it would have been cool to be able to enter buildings. It's so frustrating to see those open doors and not be able to walk through them. It would have been fun to be able to loot a store or beat up a cashier or something. The ability to enter a vehicle would have been nice too. Imagine jacking a car or truck and ramming it into a store front? That would have been nice as well. The last criticism I have is one where I agree with most of the critics. The missions do [stink] and they are boring. But the reason I think they [stink] is that this is supposed to be a riot and there's not supposed to be any rhyme or reason to it, so why even bother having missions! It's much more run running around like a lunatic. My advice: skip the missions altogether and go for kaos mode.

Conclusion: Great game for those who aren't looking for intellectual stimulation and just want to let off steam. Think of it more as a freeform fighting game rather than Grand Theft Auto and I'm sure you won't be "disappointed."
