Lacks the game factor

I purchased this game as a replacement for the venerable Aces Of The Pacific. While the game is a great flight simulator and is extremely involved The combat simulator leaves a lot to be desired. With all the intricacy of the flight model it seems they left out a lot of the fighting model. Planes that I know could do an Immelman turn in combat simply cannot do that in this simulator. Also the selection of planes is maybe half of the Aces of the Pacific selection, which adds to the disappointment. I would like to see someone update the Aces series for new computers so that these half baked attempts are knocked off of the shelf and into the serious Flight simulator only genre.

Avoid CFS3 - - Upgrade CFSM2 with Add Ons

I was thrilled when news of CFS3's release came out, but then was scared away by all of the horrible reviews about the game. CFS2 was such a huge improvement over the original I expected a quantum leap in CFS3 and I gather that is not the case from what I have read. But all is not lost.

After doing some research I found that all of the features I wanted that were absent from CFS2 are available as free add-ons easlily downloadable from dozens of websites authored by flight sim enthusiasts. With some simple add ons to CFS2 you can fly any type of plane from any era - - you can fly in any theatre (i.e. Europe, North Africa, etc.) - - you can fly single missions or huge campaigns. Sick and tired of flying Wildcats against wave after wave of Kates, Vals and Zeros in repetitive stock missions? Jealous of the Daultless pilots who dive down to hit the Soryu on those Midway missions while you fly escort or CAP? Just plug in the various add-ons and you can fly in any plane and under just about any scenerio (fictional or historic) you like.

The available add-ons can vastly improve game play and variety. I was amazed by the number of historically accurate add-on missions that are available for free. "The Midway Project" is a terrific add-on that lets you fly any one of the many air missions of both sides in that historic engagement - - and they're all deadly accurate. Just another example . . . there's an entire campaign relating to the Austrialian defense of Port Moresby and New Guinna available entirely for free. All of the missions, planes, ships, campaigns and utilities that I've added to the program have been easy to install and they run perfectly. It took me roughly 2-4 hours to find and download everything I wanted and when I was done I had added just about every combat aircraft that was flown in any theatre in WWII, had added about 20 individual missions and three whole new campaigns.

Having opted to stay away from CFS3 I can't really comment on that game. I understand it's quite good if you have a brand new ... machine and can be a horror show if you don't have the latest Pentium and the fastest graphics card available. I can say that upgrading CFS2 with various free add ons has totally changed the game into everything I was hoping I would get with CFS3. The games runs perfectly even with all of the miscellaneous additional files, it's much more historically accurate and it's a LOT more fun.

DON'T BE SURPRISED!!!

Now me among thousands of other CFS fans are dying for the release of the Second edition....CFS2 however, DON'T BE SURPRISED if you have to have the same system requirements as the other games Microsoft have recently releast such as... FS2K, FS2K Pro and Crimson Skies, all of which require 10 Ghz. super computers with 516 mb of RAM just to get the intro to run.

I have no idea what Microsoft is tring to prove with these massive programs that can't run properly on average computer systems.

So fair warning... don't be surprised... waiting your heart out only to realize it runs like crap on your average home computer system.

For Christmas I got Combat Flight Simulator 2 and I have played with it every day. I dont think I will ever be tired of it especially with all the air craft down loads you can get off the internet at [URL]. If you get down loads the first thing you should get is the IA pach, (it makes all non-fliable planes fliable). It is a must. On the same site you can also get every airplane from WW 2, but WW 2 planes are not all they have. They also have modern aircraft like the F-16, B-2 and even the Apache chopper with all the fire power. For the stock air craft they have repaints and weapon modifications. The weapon modifications are so cool. You can make any airplane carry any weapon. And that's what you can do with the the down loads.

The game itself is even more fun. To get the most out of Combat Flight Sim 2, you should get a "force feed-back" joy stick, with rudder control, it realy adds alot of realism. Once you have flown every mission in the game you can ether build more with the "mission builder" or you can down load missions from the internet. I suggest you build your own, it is alot of fun. I realy recommand this game, it is fun and real, it is the perfect flight simulator, up to date with the combat and everything else you would expect from a flight simulator. I suggest that you get this game now and Combat Flight Simulator 3 this fall when it comes out. I hope this review was useful to you and you get this wonderful game. Your fellow pilot, John-Luke (age 13).

SIMPLY THE BEST

Don't listen to those who say this is a let down, thy're the people that will never be happy with a sim... You need the hardware, but that's not bad, that's very good because that means you will be able to play the game for years to come. Graphics are great, in fact if you don't have the hardware, upgrading now would be a good Idea. If you spend money just to buy the hardware for this game YOu won't be disapointed. If you loved aces of the pacific this game will take you back to those days.

Real Sim action ( not Arcade )

Ok... the min system req are a bit much. And the program is a bit large. And out of the box the planes have limited Air-to-Surface attacks (guns and cannons). But this game is the best WWII-era flight sim around. The realism of flight( when set to max realism) is spot on. The AI of the enemies is definately not a turkey shoot and real Air Combat techniques have to be used to get the upper hand. The instructions are a bit lack-luster ( but who reads those anyway !! ) I also have found that there are CFS2 sites with updated planes, mission, etc that let used torpedo, bombs etc... BUY THIS!!

A MUST HAVE Flight Sim!

Microsoft's follow up to the European Theater's Combat Flight Simulator is a vast improvement. While the game's look is quite different, the gameplay remains compelling. The 1940's comic book styled user interface is much more interesting to look at. The game is superlative in most categories. Beware...your PC needs the juice to run this game. If you can double the minimum req's, you'll be fine. The stock planes are too few (only 7)however there are many internet forums out there where a sim pilot can acquire a multitude of add-on aircraft and mods. These sources transform a really good flight sim to a hypnotic experience. I really enjoy this edition better than CFS3. It is simply more fun.

Not so Great

It's either great graphics which are outstanding or great flying which is not when the graphics are running full tilt. Combat Flight Simulator WWII Europe Series is much better. It tried to do less and accomplished more. To get these aircraft flying you have to sacrifice too much in graphics. Microsoft tried to please too many and put too much in this which ruined the performance of the aircraft.

Good air to air, but air to ground is lacking

I had been playing CFS-1 (Europe) for several months before I bought this game. I run a PIII-866mhx with 256MB RAM and a GE Force card with 64MB of video ram. No problems with hardware. The gameplay I've found to be more challenging than CFS-1 (the enemy planes seem smaller and much harder to hit). The cockpit renderings are fantastic, and the air-to-air combat scenery is great also. My beef with the game is twofold: air-to ground action, a big component in the Pacific campaign, is really weak (lousy ground graphics), and from an historical perspective the game misses some critical campaign pieces (most notably Iwo Jima & Okinawa). Overall a lot of fun, especially carrier landings.

Great WWII sim!

This game puts you in the cockpit of one of many WWII fighter planes and lets you expereince the action for yourself. Although this game has about a 2+ hour learning curve, once you have the controls down, you will absolutely enjoy this game. The graphics, to say the least, are the most detailed and realistic of all flight sims I've played (trust me- I've played a lot). Away from the game, however, I found the 300-page "Pilot's Manual" both informative and interesting. Beyond telling you how to control a certain plane, it gives you background information and real-life pictures of the plane back in the day. I have a somewhat relation to this game, as my grandpa was a pilot in this region during the war, and I've learned so much about this area of the armed forces. I recommend this game to all that are looking for a great game and maybe even a little "hitory lesson".
