The BEST flight simulator available!!!

Hands down this is the best flight simulator I have ever tried. I have not liked any previous MS FS products, but, this one is a whole different story. If you have a force feedback joystick you get the sensation of really flying. The scenery is great. Of course, there will always be room for improvement. But, I have found the program to be VERY stable and a lot of fun. I HIGHLY recommend it to any serious flight sim fan!

I had a chance to fly FS2002 at the Microsoft Flight Simulator booth at EAA Airventure in July. My favorite feature was the virtual cockpit. I have flown some freeware aircraft that included virtual cockpits but this was awsome. All the instruments operate and you can read them. I was flying the Bell 206 and the virtual cockpit made manuvering the aircraft, especially on landing much easier.

The scenery was also awsome. My biggest gripe about past flight sims was the lack of trees and other obstacles off the airports. This will make emergency landings much more interesting. Autogen definetly gets a thumbs up.

I just checked the status of my order and it will be here in two days. I can't wait!!!

Simply Amazing

The words, the video, the pictures, thje descriptios....They are all not enough to describe what this game is to the REAL flight Sim people like myself. They are selling this game for around 65 dollars for the pro. In my opinion, i would of paid 100. Well worth the graphics, and the ATC is so realistic that it actually makes you feel that you are a part of something very real. My only advice is that you invest in the joystick ( Force feedback) to get the entire effects. Other than that, happy flying.

Wow... being one of the many who felt seriously disappointed and somewhat ripped off with FS 2000 I went into this one with some trepidation, even after all the glowing reviews...I did the full install, jumped right in, and set a few of my personal preferences before going off on my first flight, a short jump around San Francisco in the Caravan. View changes are as fast and smooth as they were in 98, the thing consistantly runs at 40fps without a single tweak, and the scenery is close to being as good as any add on I've come across for 2000. It looks like Microsoft got it right this time! All the advance press seems to be true. My first flight consisted of taking off from SF Int., crusing to the city, a water landing under the Golden Gate, then taking off and heading back to the airport, ATC yelling at me the entire way! Everything ran perfect, and in all truth, I'm pretty much stunned right now at how good this thing is right out of the box! If you're into flight sims, this one's a must have!! Running a 1gig. Athlon here, 256 megs. of RAM, and a Prophet 4500 vid card.No clue as to how it'll run on a weaker system, but I have heard that people have gotten it to run ok on systems as slow as PIII 400s.

Having been an avid fan of MS Flight sims since their earliest versions, and for over twelve years, it is great they have finally incorporated a virtual cockpit, which can be used to view the superb scenery, tree's included. It runs beautifully on my very middle of the road system (575Mhz, 256Mb Ram, TNT2 32 PCI). I have added the New Zealand 150 mesh scenery, which gives the mountainous landscapes picture postcard realism. I have very few gripes and the good news, it can only get better. Chris Bell

As Real As It Gets!!

I bought FS 2002 four months ago and I've been "flying" every single day since then. Then I wanted to test its realism, just for fun, I went to a local flight school and ask for a "discovery flight" for $$ for 1 hr. Let me tell you that now I can compare FS-2002 to the real thing and it's true, it is as real as it gets...the only thing missing here are the G forces, but everything else is real. Even my instructor was amazed of my level of knowledge.
If you like flying, buy FS-2002, and if you don't believe me, go to your local flying school and compare for yourself!

Not as realistic as they say ..

I had heard a lot about the MS flight simulator before I bought it...I had read hundreds of reviews on Amazon.com. I guess I had started expecting too much. My biggest disappointment with the Flight Simulator was that the sceneries are not realistic at all. In St.Louis, all you see after take off is barren lands with a few buildings and the arch that look like the downtown. It looks more like an 18th century St.Louis with the arch added on to it. And of course, there is an outline of the river. There is no greenery, no snow, no nothing.

I also tried some of the international airports that I am familiar with. They are all there in the database, but no sceneries. They all have just the runway. After you take off, they are all the same.

The training flights [aren't good], The voice of the instructor and the actual events are not co-ordinated. Even after you crash, the instructor will keep giving you instruction on how to land.

Still, it is a good product, it just has a long way to go to be able to claim what they say it is.

Fantastic!

Ladies and Gentlemen, get ready for one of the most realisticly simulators avaialable on today's market! Microsoft's Flight Simulator 2002 Professional Edition really takes you to the skies! I have had this simulator for a little over a year, and I have not come to any major disapointments yet! I actaully got this simulator right when I started taking aviation lessons, and let me tell you, this program is nothing short of amazing! Amazing visuals, realistic flight models, real-time automated weather and scenery, new artifical intelligence system, new interactive air control system, and so many more goodies just packed into this flight sim!

Flight Simulator 2002 Professional has many new features than its other simulator brands (such as Flight Simulator 98). New Aircraft, new artificial intelligence system, new interactive air control system, new NEW NEW! Everything, if not everything, then nearly everything is new in MFS2002Pro. Now I know what you're probably thinking right now. You're probably thinking wait, why is this simulator so fun? I mean all you do is fly around in a simulated airplane. Wrong! You experience what it's like to fly in real time, well..almost at least. Well..maybe not almost, but close! Imagine taking off in a Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jet, on your way to a long international flight to Paris, or skim the ocean waters, lakes, whatever in a Caravan Floatplane, or how about cruising around in New York City to have a glance at the Empire State Building in a Bell 206B Jetranger III Helicopter. So many possibilities! With having more than 22,000 airports world wide, make flying almost endless. You can also fly to private unknown airports, not just intl. ones.

MFS2002Pro also supports cool new features such as real-time weather. This is a neat option. If you have a modem above 56k, this is especially useful. What this does is take weather information from a satelite, and transfers that data into your simulator, making it real-time. Say if you live in Los Angelas, California and it's storming over there, just thundering and raining all day, then click this option, and it'll put it's exact weather conditions into your simulator. Not only does MFS2002Pro have neat features, it has great graphics too. When you fly above major cities, you'll notice different buildings. Offices, construction zones, schools, houses, popular landmarks, etc. Auto-generated scenery, another beautifully crafted option in MFS2002Pro. But to make those cities in this sim look more real, you have to turn up auto-generated scenery all the way too 100%, and you must have a machine that can handle it. There are tons of cool graphics in this sim as I stated above. When your plane touches down on the runway, you can see the smoke comming off the tires, you can see reflections on your plane's fuselage, and so much more. Although the graphics are weak in some spots (such as the terrain mesh, trees, water, etc.), it's still a pretty good lookin' sim! Of course though, we can't have ultra-hyper cinemetic graphics on a huge map, I mean it's the world we're talkin' about, it's huge! Machines can't handle that yet. In a few years though, I am hoping for Microsoft to improve the graphics a bit. Maybe entering different types of trees, making realistic waves in the simulator (such as being close to the ground you can see the waves lifting up and brushing off the shores), seeing cars speed past each other on the highways, etc. Maybe it'll happen in a few years, who knows. But for now, the graphics are pretty realistic in most areas.

You just don't have fun playing with this sim, you actaully learn from it too! In fact, sometimes you won't even know if you learn something, because you're so busy having fun. I use this simulator not only to have a blast flying to Chicago, but to help me practice flying in real life. If you're serious with this simulator, and don't fool around with it such as crashing on purpose, you will develop good flight habbits. Because of this simulator, I have learned my instruments in less than a full day, instead of reviewing the different instruments for a week in a book. If you're serious with this simulator, this simulator will be serious with you.

So MFS2002Pro, is it worth buying? I could go raving on and on about this, but I'm getting pretty tired. So if high-rendered visuals, being able to fly nearly anywhere in the world, learning what it "kind of" feels like to be an aviator, then this is the game for you! I suggest a processor of at least 1.6 ghz, a minimum of 512MB RAM, a high-end video card, crank this simulator up and experience a whole new thing! The more realism in this sim your computer can handle, the more interesting and exciting things will get!

Great, but be careful.

First, I've been using the Microsoft simulators for some time. They really have gotten better, better graphics, more detail, you name it. But they've also taken up a great deal of space on the drive, and each has, of course, required a far more complicated machine than the prior program.

And I've NEVER assumed the programs to be real "training" devices, if for no other reason, no matter how I mess up, my life is not at risk in the simulator.

I looked forward to this one. A few new aircraft, more scenery detail (probably learned from the train simulator). I got it and right off had a problem. For some reason, the manuals would not show. I must credit Microsoft, though, with their rapid response to my inquiries. It took just a couple of days with their help to figure out and solve that problem.

I particularly like the air traffic control function on this. I think they got the idea from non Microsoft simulator--or from real life--but it fits well into the program, makes it more true-to-life.

One minor item: The flight "instructor" tries to be cute and humorous. That can get old pretty quickly. (I assume it would be more fun in real life, when one could use a little wit to keep his or her head up!)

Now, though, there are issues with the airports. I am supposed to have a detail of the airport to examine traffic patterns before landing. The program "points me" to a file in which these details supposedly exist, but I don't see them yet. Maybe that's something I'll figure out, but I think maybe the program has become somewhat dependent on Jeppesen. (For those of you not familiar with FS2000, one could purchase from Jeppesen a series of disks with details of airports all over the U.S. They actually cost me more than the FS2000 program!) I can log onto the Jeppesen site and they say their NEW disks won't be available until mid-January 2002.

Some have complained of the autopilots but I prefer it that way. It's more "realistic," Not just a quick button to press and voila, it all works fine.

As to the manuals, they're pretty long to read them on the screen. My bigger comment is that they take up a great deal of hard disk space.

As others have commented, in a nutshell, you better have a pretty up to date machine, or this program will be useless. If your machine is adequate, enjoy it, but anticipate a few unanswered questions.

Now, I may have to get the most up-to-date joystick....

This game is unstable!

Just received Flight Simulator 2002 for Xmas and having a real problem using it. Seems that I get continual "freezes" or pauses every few seconds while trying to fly any of the aircraft in the program. This is not only annoying but almost unusable, since it's is hard to make fine adjustments during flight (especially trying to hover the bell helicopter).

I would, however, appreciate any help, tips, or suggestions
that could possibly cure this problem. For reference I am running Windows XP on an 800MHz Athalon CPU, 512Mb of RAM, a brand new G-Force 2 video card with 32Mb of RAM, and a 20 Gb hard drive.
