i've had this game on xbox since it's release & it is fantastic. online. it's even better. the reason i preordered it for ps2 is due to the exclusive stuff for the ps2 version. off line split screen co-op, altered maps from the xbox version, a new map only on the ps2, & live enabled. as of now, it won't support as many as xbox on line. i've seen as many as 12 people in a room (team survival)6 on each team. terrorist hunt is my favorite on line. now matter how many times you do the same map over, it's still a challenge.

Splitscreen co-op feature not implemented

Rainbow Six 3 for the PS2 is quite a good looking game and plays generally quite well, with a decent interface and controls.

But I feel it has a significant problem. Let me make this clear: a friend and I purchased this game for the 2-player, splitscreen coop mode. Like Ghost Recon PS2, this mode is implemented extremely poorly. You can only play splitscreen on missions you have finished in campaign mode first. You cannot save after splitscreen missions. You can't progress beyond the first coop mission without running through more campaign missions.

Let's think about this. The game forces you to play through the game one player in order to play two player..at which point one of the players has to go through all the missions again in two player mode. To me, this is like forcing somebody to play through the game in order to get the sound working. Coop is an important feature that was mentioned over and over in advertising but does not really exist in a usable form.

Just wanted to blow off some steam and warn everyone: Do NOT buy this game for two player splitscren mode.

2.5 Stars. Some Good Ideas That Fall Far Short

As the godfather of the squad based counter terror game, I admit that I expected some big things from Rainbow Six 3. But instead what I got was what can be described as alot of good ideas that unfortunately aren't executed very well.

In Rainbow Six 3 you play the role of Ding Chavez, the leader of an elite count terrorist group called "Rainbow" commanded by Tom Clancy staple, John Clark. In the game you lead your team into various hot spots around the globle, battling terrorists to ensure the safety of the free world.

Rainbow Six 3's main downfall is it's gameplay. Red Storm has attempted to streamline this version by dispensing with the tedious planning stage. Unfortunatley it didn't concentrate enough on the actual missions. The missions are very linear in nature. Players essentially go from point A to point B, perform a task and then advance to the next objective. Whether it was by design or a result of the level layout, there is little if no room to improvise. By comparison, the game SOCOM by design is so well laid out that your objectives can be accomplished in any order and from a number of different ways. Also, the game is portrayed in first person. Which gives it a very clausterphobic feel. A third person option might have opened up the gameplay and levels more, but there are alot of Rainbow Six fans who would take offense to such an idea. There are many different "real world" weapons to choose from as well as "real world" tactics to employ, but unfortunately the gameplay isn't interesting enough to make the choice of weapons all that compelling. One welcome addition is the use of the USB headset. In single player you can give your team orders from a list of commands. This works pretty well and makes the game more enjoyable to a small degree. The only thing I haven't had a chance to try has been the online mode due to not having broadband or the Network Adaptor.

The graphics on this game are, at best, sub-par. Red Storm has recycled the Splinter Cell game engine for use on the PS2. But the character models are so poorly rendered that they look almost like wax statues from a museum. As stated above, the levels are poorly laid out. The spaces are very confined and not condusive to any kind of improvisation. The in game cutscenes are also substandard. Anyone old enough to remember the 60's television program The Thunderbirds will get a laugh out of them. But they are horribley voiced and scripted. The games sounds are very good as are with all Tom Clancy games. A game, however, does not live on sound alone.

I really had high hopes for this game. I thought the Red Storm and Ubi Soft could pull a rabbit out it's hat and deliver a great squad based game. It looks like that was not the case. Unless you're an ardent Rainbow Six fan, then I can't recomend this game. If you're looking for a better squad based game for the PS2 then I would recomend SOCOM and/or SOCOM 2. Either game is well worth the money.

Having been a fan of the PC-based Rainbow Six series, and seeing the dismal ports on PSX and N64, I was somewhat apprehensive about this title. However, I was pleasntly surprised. So, without further delay, here is my breakdown of this game.
CONCEPT: Lead a 4-man CT (counter-terrorism) team in a variety of missions, including sweep and clear, bomb disposal, and hostage rescue, with a WIDE selection of weapons and gear to assist you.
GRAPHICS: Weapon detail is excellent. You can actually "see" the "correct" way to reload the various rifles and pistols in the game. The night and thermal vision modes look very sweet and are actually very useful. Environments are great as well, although tangos look a bit redundant after a while (they either wear leisure suits or Hawaiian shirts. Kinda like blowing away John Travolta or Jimmy Buffett...).
SOUND: The weapon's sounds are very authentic. You can tell the difference between an M-4 and an AK-47, as well as the other weapons. Radio chatter amongst teammates is also a tad repetitive, as is tango voices (both living and dying). However, a nice feature is the ability to hear radio chatter only through the headset, which adds to the ambiance and realism (especially when playing alone). Environmental sounds are also very realistic.
CONTROLS: Not bad. Tends to be a bit frustrating at first, but you get the hang of it very quickly. Issueing team commands is good either with or without the headset, although without is a bit easier.
OVERALL: A good, solid combat/tactical sim worthy of the "Tom Clancy" title. I think that there are a few issues here and there, like not being able to pick your teammate's weapons and gear, or the sometimes dumb mistakes your teammates can make resulting in their injury or demise. Also, it would have been nice to be able to pick your team from a wider pool of operatives (like the PC versions). If you like this type of game, you will not be disappointed. Replay value is good, as trying missions over again with new weapons and tactics is a blast. Military/weapons buffs (like me) will enjoy the realism and there is no shortage of action for the the shooter-game junkies. OK. This concludes my pre-op briefing. Any questions? No? Then you have the green light for insertion. Good luck!

Falls short of the X-Box version, but not a bad port overall

In the past, I have not been a big fan of the Rainbow Six series...but after playing the X-Box version of Rainbow Six 3, I was quite impressed. The plethora of selectable weapons and realistic environments adds a new twist on the first person shooter genre, allowing the player to guide a team of 3 other individuals in counter-terrorism scenarios. No quirky floating power-ups or monsterous boss battles here, just real-life situations with the stamina of a normal human. One well placed shot in the head or chest region will bring you down, as well as your opponents. Unfortunately, the PS2 version fails to fully replicate the experience of it's X-Box counterpart. Subtle differences in the backrounds and environments are present, some frame-rate problems exist here and there, and for some odd reason there are more loading screens. The exclusive Trieste mission is a fairly enjoyable romp, but isn't anything to get excited over. The split-screen mode is a generous addition and plays as smoothly as the 1-player campaign mode (which makes me wonder why it wasn't in the graphically superior X-Box version), but it's no substitute for playing via link cable. The bottom line: The PS2 is an acceptable port, but if you have an X-Box or a high end PC, you would do well to get Rainbow Six 3 for it instead.

Huge Disapointment

Ubi Soft is at it again with it's third chapter in the tactical Squad shooter, base off of a Tom Clancy book, Rainbow Six.

After a botched operation the Rainbows are licking their wounds and wanting to get back into the action again to prove themselves worthy. There chance comes in the form of a massive crisis that involves OPEC, the US and the Saudi's. A string of terrorist attacks is crippling the oil industry and there is a hell of a lot of finger pointing. It's up to John Clark's Rainbow Team to figure out what is happing.

R63 takes the more traditional FPS format by only playing one person and seeing the weapon you are using, held in the character's right hand. But this game also has a few small, but damaging features.

No selective feature on the weapons, submachine guns and assault rifles are stuck on full auto/burst, making accuracy impossible.

Too many friggen guns to choose from! Normally that won't be such a bad thing, but I spent five to ten minutes thinking about which gun I want to use.

At most you have three men plus you, no other teams. Of the three men you control, you can't change their equipment.

Why is this game rated M? The only blood that I saw was in the open cinematic and it was just two quick shots, there isn't any more blood or gore in the game, also not even a bad word is utter.

Lets hope that Rainbow Six 4 will be better

One hell of a game!

You know what? I love the first person shooter games and I am a big fan of the Bond games. For some reason I love the sound of a loading gun and this is the satisfaction I have been waiting for in a game. This is one of the best first person shooters......well.......one of the BEST GAMES I have played.

First of all I like the weapin choice. You can really customize what you are fighting with. You have a primary, secondary, high explosive and covert weapons to chose from. Some of those missions I will tell you...they were really hard. the best thing in the game was what you could do with your team-mates. You could tell them what to do and they were the ones who made the mission that much easier. There is a window that popps up when you want them to interact with the environment, like doors and so on. I have to give this game a 5 out of 5 because first of all the graphics are incredable, it is a challenge, it makes you think, and it is just another fine product of the Tom Clancy mind!!

Terrible

This game is terrible. The movement is difficult and cumbersome. Your team of elite soldiers are nothing more than bumbling idiots that manage to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. They remind me of the Three Stooges as they constantly run back and forth into the line of fire. Mine as well as the terrorists! The missions are very linear and the maps don't allow for any exploration. I had to choose between this game and Ghost Recon Jungle Storm. I made the wrong choice. I would not reccommend this game to anyone.

asome game!!
