I preordered the game because I could get a great deal on it, and figured it was too good to pass up, even if I hated the game. No need to worry about that.

I got it as soon as the shipment came in, and have played it nonstop since then... that's about 36 hours now. The American version is MUCH better than the Japanese game. There are extra items added, and each version has two extra starter dogs. Nintendo fans and online community members will recognize various Nintendo icons in the game, such as game creator (and creator of Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, and Pikmin, among others) Shigeru Miyamoto (called "Shiggy") with his dog Pik and former Nintendo Power writer (and current Localization Team member for NOA) Alan Averill, called Alan.

There are twenty breeds overall, with three variations of each. The game starts out at the kennel, and you pick your dog. After it comes home with you, you have to teach it its name. Young children who still don't speak clearly will have a hard time with the voice recognition, because they'll learn to speak correctly and the dog won't know it's name. There's also a lot of reading involved, and on a handheld, there's not much room to read it for your child.

There's no reason to buy all three versions of the game. The only difference between them is the starter dogs, but you can unlock every breed.

The Bark Mode allows you to stop playing but have your dog search for other players. If someone else playing Nintendogs comes into range, your dog will bark and you and the other person will be able to interact. You can also send the other person a present.

People saying this game is for little kids are completely wrong. I've seen people from age 3 to age 63 love this game- including myself at 16.

Lair of Eric recommended for ages 6 and up (or whenever you can read).

get this

Santa brought this for my kids ages 6 and 7. It keeps them very entertained. The best thing of all is I don't have to buy a real dog! At least not for now. They are both up to 3 dogs in which they "play" with, walk, train etc. We have bought a 2nd Nintendogs so now they can visit each other and exchange messages (pictochat). I saw a report on the news warning parents about the bluetooth capabilites and how anyone within a certain distance can send messages to your kids through the DS Lite so use caution.

Don't listen to ANYONE who says this game is bad

I recently got this game and it is so so so cool! Anyone who rates this less than 5 stars is wacky and wierd! Trust me, if you have a Nintendo DS THEN BUY THIS!! You cannot, I repeat, cannot go wrong buying it. Now you get to own up to 8 dogs in 'your' house. You need 'money' to buy the dogs and supplies, but it is really cool how you earn it.
1 you could go to a competion and get placed well
2 You can sell stuff to get money
But really this game is just so cool!!! Anyone who has a Nintendo DS I REALLY REALLY REALLY Recommend them buying this game!

wow nintendo!

This game is amazing and for many reasons..first you can pick from a large selection of dogs, a puppy. They all have different personalities, some say they get along great with other dogs and love listening to their owners, some say they like to do their own thing, so think carefully about witch puppy you want. If you don't see a dog you like or the right combination of male/female or color just hit back then enter the pen again until you see one that is perfect for you. Once you have your puppy you pretty much follow the game, it tells you how to name your dog and it starts you on training it to sit, ly down, paw, etc... Using your voice of course! Once your dog knows a bunch of tricks you can enter it into contests, the more contests you win the more money you win, which will then allow you to purchase more dogs if you'd like. You also need to walk your dog, wash and brush it and play with it. There are frisbee contests so you can purchase a frisbee and practice with your dog. You can also blow bubbles at your dog this is a really neat feature. This is a pretty fun game it takes patience to teach your dog new tricks but if you stick with it it becomes more simple. Also ALL DOGS IN THE NINTENDOGS SERIES ARE UNLOCKABLE IN EACH GAME. So don't go out and buy all 3 versions. The ones on the box are the ones you start out with, but by winning contests and earning money you can unlock all the dogs for a price. Great game for all ages.

An AWESOME game!

This was the first game I got for my new DS lite and I am impressed!

People do say that it isn't the best game, but if you love dogs, want one or anything like it you will be impressed.

When you first start off in the game you are whisked off too the kennel with $1,000 (enough to buy 1 dog of choice and accessories). You will be given 6 choices at first, listed on your versions cover, I reccommend the Lab one. You get to pick your dog now! Keep in mind all dogs have different personalities so if you want dog with a different personality just click out and then back, the dogs do change.
*Keep in mind all versions are unlockble with your trainer points*

Now you get to play with your dog, then name it. Naming your pooch will only be successful if you pronounce it the same and enunciate each time. Pretty soon your dog will know its name.

The game will then guide you through to teach your dog to sit. After this you get to play with your dog. You can now buy toys and necessities. Make sure that you keep your dog happy by keeping up with all its needs, food, water, bathing, etc.

You can earn more money by entering contests and selling un-needed supplies at the second hand shop.

When you go on walks (go at least once daily with each dog) you get trainer points and you get to make your dog happy!

...and eventually with enough money you can even buy more dogs!

I hope I included enough. If not the instrction manual included is a great resourse.

Have fun raising your puppy(s)!

A lot of fun!

My nine-year-old daughter has played this game everyday since she got it (Christmas 06). All of her friends have it, so they are able to exchange dog breeds, and accessories. She says she'd give this game 60 stars!

Ignore them

First off, do not listen to the other reviewer saying to wait because it is going to come out for PSP. That is ridiculous. NINTENDOgs is made by (surprise) NINTENDO! Nintendo would never make it for Sony's PSP. The control for the entire game is using the stylus, which the PSP obviuosly lacks. That is almost as silly as Mario for the Xbox. Secondly, all of the dog breeds are, in fact, available on one cartridge. They just need to be unlocked by interacting with other Nintendogs owners.

As for the game, I suggest merely renting it. The gameplay gets repetitive fast, and the cuteness factor wears off. There is only so much you can do with it besides walking the dog, bathing it, and taking it to competitions. The game might be good for small children who want to get puppys, to see if they can handle the responsibilities. Besides, you might get weird reactions if you are saying "Roll over!" to your dog at a public place.

Overall, as I said before, rentit first to see if you want to buy it. I would give it an 8.1 out of 10.

This is great

this is a great game! you can adopt a dog, train it, walk it and enter it in competions! To train it you have to use voice command which is AWESOME but sometime when you are in a noisy place it is hard to train it!I hope this helped!
