Console version not up to standards

The console version of Call of Duty 2 entitled Call of Duty: The Big Red One is simply just not up to the standards of its PC cousin.
The best parts of the game occur in the new North Africa campaign. This is largely unexplored territory for video games and Call of Duty The Big Red One does a good job of giving you a view of what the North African campaign might have been like for the Big Red One. The campaign through Italy is also unexplored territory and these missions are quite fun, particularly the beach landing mission. The game also gives you the opportunity to control several different vehicles in the game, from a tank to a machine gun on a jeep to an anti-aircraft gun. This is a fun respite from just being a GI and gunning down Nazis.

However, the drawbacks outweigh the positives in this game and make it just mediocre. The game overall is too scripted. Unlike the PC version, this game has objectives you must complete in order because they're only given to you one at a time. The levels are also not very wide open, there are several paths you could take to complete a mission that are cut off to you by invisable walls. This is quite irritating, especially since there are tons of PS2 games out there now that don't force you into one path or one objective at a time.
Even the enemy AI is scripted too much. There were occasions I ran into rooms only to have the enemy inside not react. Other occasions I had to run to a door in order for the next section of a mission to start and the Nazis to open the door and pour out. This smacks of gameplay of a couple years ago.

One of my biggest gripes is that this game just is too short. They didn't bother continuing the game with the Big Red One's assault into Germany or its role in repelling the Nazi offensive in the Ardennes, one of the Big Red One's biggest successes in the war. This gives the game just a feeling of incompleteness. If they aimed to tell the story of the Big Red One during the war they should have told the complete story, not just half.

Overall, this game isn't a step forward for WW2 console games. It's got the same tired problems those of us that have grown tired of the Medal of Honor series have experienced for years. Unfortunately the advances made in its PC cousin do not appear here at all and make this just an ok game.

Awesome game

This game was phenominal, absolutely brilliant. The graphics were refreshingly good, the gameplay was thrilling throughout the whole thing and the language 'cursing the name of god', did nothing to change the playability of this game. The first commentor needs to realise that 1) the company is not trying to kill any deities 2) you are not exactly the target audience for these games 3) a few words does not make the game any less fun, so calm down.

This is my first Call of Duty game and I was a big noob at it. I beat the game in 4 days. Very realistic and a very good first person shooter game.

Pros:
Realistic missions
Classic firearms
Excellent Graphics
Missions where you could fly B-24s and use tanks

Cons:
Very Short. only 13 missions
Should be more challenging. You should protect your squad. They only die when they're supposed to

Overall: Its a very short game. It's like an 8 hour game. The storyline is very short but is for all WW2 addicts. Good choice of weaponry. A must get for anyone obsessed with WW2 or just likes to blast peoples heads off with a Springfield.

Very enjoyable, unfortunately cut short.

I am not, and never have been, a person who will complete a game in a very short period of time. It's just not possible for me. However, COD2:BRO was a rare difference. I completed the game within 4 days of moderate timing of playing. It is a shame that there are quite a small amount of missions to do, but hey, that's how the real company went by it!

The graphics are good but not stunning, but it's the gameplay that is very enjoyable! The player AI and computer AI is very good and varies well within the setting. The detail and firing of the gun you possess really gets you into a state of rapid fire where you just want to keep shooting, so impressed with your accuracy! Each weapon has it's own sound and affect, it's great, it's very real. You can crouch and shuffle on the ground to keep out of sight, popping off enemies in the process.

What is great about this also, is that you don't just play a private with a gun, you also take the reigns of shooting down other planes from a C-47 and take pictures to uncover the enemies whereabouts and targets. You take charge of chain guns, tanks, and maybe a few others I forgot, but it's all different, and the way you shoot, the result of it, is very real and free flowing. The reaction to being shot whether it be you or one of the enemy is very realistic too.

Overall a very enjoyable game that takes you from Africa to the German line in the war, which may seem a long time, but the missions are quite many but slightly shorter than anticipated.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One was a fantastic game. It seemed so realistic and I really got atached to the other characters. The different levels were a huge variety. Very addictive. It was my first COD game and I would expect the other games to be unbelievable. Great sound and graphics, as well. This game was spectacular!!!

There were some down sides of the game, too. First, the game was way too short. I got so ubset when the credits started rolling. It seemed like I just started getting good at the game and it was over. But, one more thing that bothered me was when you get stuck on one object. Not very many bad points in this game, though.

Overall, this game is one of the best that I have ever played. You drive tanks, pilot planes, blow things up, and the good old fashon killing on foot. This game is truley a standard for all WWII games. I have read reviews for the BIA or MOH games and they always mention the COD. Rent it about 2 times and finish the game and eventually add it to your collection because this is truley a great game!!!!!

Very Entertaining!

Call of Duty: Finest Hour was one of the most frantic first-person shooters I had played in a while. Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is and upgrade. This game is action-packed and the sound is amazing. Very realistic! Graphics aren't as good as Finest Hour and I wasn't as amazed with the explosions as I was with Finest Hour. But, the game makes up for it! Awesome game! Online is MUCH better than Finest Hour! I found myself literaly ducking for cover as incoming mortars pounded down. Online gameplay is great! Again, the explosions aren't as good in online. But, the rest is great. The problem I have online, though, is getting into a game. I think it's just my network connection but I sometimes get kicked off (not from being booted). Anyways, Get this game!

I was disappointed with the following aspects of this game:

1) AI is not challenging. (I'm not a great player either.)
2) Your range of movement within the game is very limited.
3) Many times you get stuck at a level just trying to figure out what you are supposed to do after all enemy are gone.

My favorite games are combat games but this was a disappointment.

fun... but boring

Don't get me wrong this game is near perfect. But this game is not as good as i thought it would be. i waited for 3 weeks 4 this. this is a good game but is lacking in many ways.
1. like from previous reviews,it;s tooooooooo short.
2. can be repetative. On g4 they said a.i. is strong. that is not true. they are weak!! the missions can be hard but they r always the same. the freakin nazis storm out of the same areas every time.
3. the missions are linear. same obl. same deaths.
4. the men in ure group are invincible and the one that do died are scheduled to do so.
5. missions can be boring often. its basically destroy this, kill them, get here and run. BORING!!!
i like the game but cant believe i presured my mom to take me and buy it. for that i am truly sorry.
this gets a three but i may have put a higher score.
wait for the price to go down and you wont be very dissapionted.

the only thing I found disapointing is how short it is. I rented it and beat it in about 6 hours. Other than that everything else is awsome. Graphics, Gameplay, and missions.

EXCELANT GAME

Call of Duty Big Red One is the best WW2 game I ever played. The AI is much smarter and the weapons are realistic. If you want an ecciting game with a little bit of WW2 history than buy this game.
