Could have been much better, a real disappointment

I really had my heart set on Toy Commander and when I got it, the game just didn't deliver! The game concept is really cool on paper but it didn't translate into a good game. The jerky camera which comes as a result of the poor vehicle control actually makes me sick everytime I play it! Control is so important in any 3D game and this game just lacking, big time!

The multi player mode is also disappointing as the small vehicles get lost among the colourful stages. The game is just not fun! The graphics and the sounds are great but the game is just lacking in the fun department.

I'm sorry people but the bottom line is that you can pass on this game and be quite contented because you saved a couple of bucks.

Fun for a while, but gets tedious

When I first played this game I thought it was fantastic, and in some ways it is. For instance, there are some well designed missions such as attacking heavily armed bases made up of serial boxes and some good rescue missions, plus it looks pretty good too. Unfortunately for every well designed mission there are one or two frustrating and boring ones. Examples of these include searching a two story house to find some cockroaches to squash and searching a huge open room simply looking for some static toy soldiers to shoot down. It was these kind of missions that ended up making me give up let the game gather dust. The difficulty level is also quite uneven in that it starts out easy, then becomes tough, easy again, then extremely tough, then easy again and so on.

This review probably sounds more negative than it should. Some people will have the patience to put up with the tedious missions to get to the good ones, but personally I felt like putting my fist through the TV screen after a while.

Your choice.

Cool, but really difficult!

I had high hopes for this game. The graphics are good, with a great "larger than life" scale. But if you are buying this for a kid, he or she better be a graduate of Top Gun or they're going to have a hard time getting very far in the game.

It is a lot of fun in 2 player mode, but single player is almost too hard to be fun.

For the kid in you

In "Toy Commander" you play the role of Andy, a little boy whose house is taken over by his rebellious toys. It seems Huggy Bear, Andy's first toy, is sick and tired of being neglected for Andy's newer toys and stages a rebellion, enlisting the aid of all the other toys Andy has neglected over the years. Huggy Bear declares himself "Toy Commander" and sets up his HQ in the house's basement.

Your job is to defeat each of these toys to earn the right to face Huggy Bear and take back control of your home. Each of Huggy Bear's minions controls one room of the house and you must best multiple challenges they issue to you before getting the chance to confront them one-on-one.

These challenges come in many different forms and form the backbone of the game. The unifying factor in each is that you must use toys to achieve your goals. You are given one or more toys with which to work. For example, in one mission you must knock three eggs into a pot of water and then turn the heat on under the pot. To do this you are given a toy tank and plane to control and you must use your wits to figure out how exactly to beat the mission. Once you have figured out what to do the next trick in this and all the missions is to best the time of the particular boss of the level; once you beat enough boss-times you get to face the boss itself.

Sounds pretty cut and dry, no? And sometimes it is, but the beauty of the game is the perfect balance the missions strike between impossible and possible, tear-your-hair-out frustrating and I've-almost-got-it frustrating. Many missions are easy to complete but not under the alloted boss-time. Others are just plain hard. But as other reviews have noted, it's just this hard-but-not-impossible quality that makes "Toy Commander" such a great game.

Other pluses: the graphics are very good, with toys and backgrounds well-crafted and detailed. All the environments--the rooms of the house-- are unique, helping to create a great variety of missions. And perhaps the biggest plus is the premise itself. Getting to zoom around a seemingly-giant house from a toy's perspective brings back fond memories of zooming around my own house, from a child's perspective.

So if you were the kid who often encountered an evil lord's forces (your green army men) kidnapping the princess (your sister's cabbage patch doll) and taking her to their mountain fort (a stack of encyclopedias) only to send in the good guys (your toy tanks) to get her back, "Toy Commander" is for you. Indeed, it is for the kid in all of us.

Since when did playing with your toys become difficult?

One thing that kind of irked me about Toy Commander was the difficulty level, which is kind of up there with all the different tasks you must complete in each level (or should I say...room?). I mean, if this is a game geared to look like it's for kids, shouldn't they have some fun with it, too? Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not asking for a cakewalk, but just a bit of adjustment of trial and error. Regardless, Toy Commander is a great innovation in the Dreamcast library, with a great graphics engine and plenty of gameplay to go around. If you're looking for something to dig into for awhile, you'll find plenty to play with here. Just don't expect something as simple as, say, Barbie.

VERY Challenging, but loads of fun

I was worried about this being a kids game. Man, was I wrong. I can't imagine a kid finishing this game. It's very tough. If you don't like a challenge, don't buy it. If you like unique, challenging, lose track of time fun, then you NEED to buy this game. It's awesome!

This game is very cool. Even though it may be a little fustrating and time-consuming sometimes its very fun. When you get tired of completing missions you can play versus style or have your friends over and play multiplayer.

A Forgotten Toy...

Toy Commander was a little game released by Sega a few months after the Dreamcast was unleashed. It received good reviews, but not that many people bought it. Well, anyone who has a Dreamcast owes it to themselves to buy this game. Toy Commander is one of the most original titles I have ever played.

The Good:

The premise and gameplay is very original. You are the Toy Commander (Andy, a young boy), who has lost control over many of his childhood toys. In a series of 50+ missions, you must fight for the alliance of your toys and regain your title as Toy Commander.
The missions are very imaginative and use the environements (bathtubs, hallways, parent's rooms, bath rooms) very cleverly. My favorite is where you make an assault on a "harbor" (a bathtub) in your plane.
Simple, but clear and sharp graphics
Music goes well with the mood of the game
Many different vehicles to choose from
The game is very humorous and utilizes the "Toy" concept very well
The weapons are very cool (even if there are only 4)

The Bad:

Some wonky controls and camera angles can lead to some cheap deaths
A few of the missions are impossible to complete in the given time limit
The bosses are way too easy

Toy Commander is one of the rare games that is both original and fun. The gameplay is so varied and clever that Toy Commander never gets stale. There is even a multiplayer mode- which is also gobs of fun. If the game's controls were a bit tighter, TC would be perfect. Still, Toy Commander is one of the finest games on the Dreamcast. And to Sega: Please make a sequel sometime soon!

This game is loads of fun. Ingenious idea for a game!

This game is just tons of fun. We have all wanted to play with our toys again as adults, and this game allows that fantasy to come true. The graphics are exhilirating and the game play, especially the multiplayer, is extremely fun.

it takes time but fun
