Really cool

Well, I bought this game before new years. I played this game a lot, but not really anymore. The game has 11 CO's in the game, 7 you have to get by doing certain things in the game. The names of the CO's are Andy, Max, Sami, Grit, Olaf, Eagle, Drake, Sonja, Kanbei, Nell, Evil Andy (can't get him), and Sturm. Each one has their own special power and weaknesses. Some might just be an overall CO. For the 7 CO's that you want to use in the game, it will have to cost you. Depending on which route you go in the campaign, there will be about from 17-21 or 22 missions (I think).
There is also a design maps, where you design 20X30 maps (I have no idea which way is vertical and horizontal). You can only save 3 though (bummer). You can only get this option if you beat all Field Training Missions. There are at least 11 missions in Field Training. A few you don't need to think about. Like the Special Intel.
You can buy maps with the coins you earn after beating the game. There are about I suppose 5 folders with maps in them. The highest map is about 100 coins. SO START WORKING ON IT!!!
If you do complete campaign. You can buy a harder campaign for 1 coin. Press select when you press new campaign, and you will be in an advance campaign. I haven't tried it out, but some people are stuck on the first mission. I hope it won't happen to me. The enemy is stronger, but you earn more coins than usual if you beat it.
Some cons I know is infantry and mechs blowing up when infantry attacks infantry. They probably didn't want to put any gory stuff in the game since it is rated E. A weird part I do not understand is how most units you buy are a group of 5. Each with 2 hp. I wonder why the bomber only has 1 bomber for air. But at least with 10 hp.
The hp you have for units will effect how much damage you can do in the game. The CO's power might help too. You'll learn that in the game anyways.
The battles at the end of the game are really hard. It took me a long time to beat the Final Battle (last battle unless you go into Rivals, by trying to get eagle and succeed).
So far, the game is sort of like Civilization 2, because it depends on what unit you use to attack another. If it is like bomber vs. infantry. With both with 10 hp each, the bomber will have the advantage. Too bad machine guns can't shoot up. I think I wrote this a bit too long.

The best game on GBA

Advance Wars is exactly what I've been waiting for. This game is designed by console developers (same team that has been responsible for all the Metriod titles) taking major elements of PC real-time strategy games such as Command & Conquer, and fusing them with a simple user interface and console style graphics and gameplay.

Although I draw the Command & Conquer comparison, Advance Wars is not a real-time strategy game. It is in fact (for the most part) turn-based strategy, but a great game with lots of action no less.

Of all the GBA titles I've tried (which is roughly all the games released in the US so far), Advance Wars is the one title I keep comming back to.

Highly recommend.

I have learned to read the reviews before buying GBA games now. I have been burned before. Everyone loved this games in the reviews and there is good reason.

This game is simply great. Fun and challenging. The game ramps you up to teach you the whole game and then slides you into the campaign. The final battle of the Campaign blew me away.

The replay value on this game is a 5 as well. You can purchase maps in game with coins earned by battle.

Don't bother renting, just buy it.

A strategy blowout

Advance wars is probably the best title out for the GBA system. Although the cartoonish ghaphics are deciving, the gameplay and stategy is awesome. I have never played something more interesting on a handlheld yet. There are tons of units that you get to control. Bombers, Tanks, Rockets, and artillery are all included in this awesome title. Advance Wars is the game to get!!!

not just the best on Gameboy, but maybe the best anywhere...

Who would have ever thought that one of--if the not THE--best turn-based stragegy game ever made would be on the lowly GameBoy?

To be more exact, the GameBoy Advance... and the game is Advance Wars. Advance Wars proves the maxim that its not how pretty a game looks that determines its greatness, but instead how well thought out it is.

The game actually looks pretty good for something that you play on a 5-inch screen--especially the Anime-style sequences which illustrate the consequences of your strategic choices--but you aren't going to be confusing it with an XBOX game any day soon. The greatness of the game has to do with how perfect the game mechanics are, and how much pure content and replayability they've managed to pack onto a cartridge not much bigger than your thumb.

Basically you start the game as a new recruit of the Orange Star Army, learning the tricks of battlefield command in a series of "Training Missions" which lay out exactly what you can and can't do in a logical, yet fun manner. The game is mostly played from an overhead map view (intercut with Animated battle action scenes), where you can control the movement and deployment of various resources like Infantry Platoons, Tanks, Ships, Aircraft, etc. The great thing is how you are eased into learning the complexity of the game one technique at a time, without making the training TOO easy.

When you graduate from Training you are "promoted" to being a kind of advisor to a series of Anime-character Commanding Officers, who (in the Campaign mode) basically act as direct proxies for you, but also have conversations amongst themselves. Each C.O. has a unique kind of super-power (come on... this IS a Japanese game), which they can use once or twice per battle, and some other stregnths and weaknesses appropriate to different types of battlefields.

The game also supports up to 4 players in a Link mode, and on-top of the already huge Campaign, has a secret, harder second campaign mode, dozens of stand-alone "Battle maps", and the ability to design and trade your own new battle maps.

I'll be playing with this one for years.

This game is awesome. It is simple, yet complex and takes a long time to master. I really love this game. It makes it so car rides never seem long enough. There is so much stuff to unlock and so many levels to play, you will never tire of this game. Also, the multiplayer and map-trading feature are great! Enjoy it!!

Great Fun!
A great strategy game for anyone!!! Even though the graphics are like cartoons, it makes a great strategy/war game. And now you're probably thinking "Oh, how boring can you get?"
It is definitely NOT boring. It has an engaging plot, fun game play, and again, GREAT strategy. You can also play Multi-Player with up to 4 friends. Also, there is NO inappropriate violence in the entire game. It easy to learn, but very difficult to master; the enemies can surprise you no matter how long you have been playing it. I also like the comic graphics. Now I hope you agree with me!
Three Cheers for Advance Wars!!!

fantastic fun and very addicting, a definite must-buy!

Ok, I'm going to lay this out straight. This game is one of the greatest games ever created, and the best game for the GBA. I first played it yesterday at my friend's house, and I instantly got hooked. I played one mission on Field Training and loved the game. Last night my same friend spent the night at my house and we would turn off the lights in my room and I would play the game in the dark, only seeing with the artificial light of the GBA SP. This game is so fun, watching your team's mechs and tanks and infantry kill Olaf's troops in Field Training is very entertaining, and the battle graphics are great!! I think one of the coolest things in the game is the CO's superpowers. I mean, Olafs blizzard is very cool, and it's fun to watch your troops battle in fog. Also, the weapons are cool, There are: Infantry, Mechs, Tanks, Bombers, Fighters, Battleships, Destroyers, Missiles, Rockets, and much, much, more! Overrall, this is how I would rate this game: Gameplay: 10/10- fun and addicting, Graphics: 10/10- clear and smooth, you can see the textures, Sound: 10/10- The music during Field Training is so good, I started humming along to it without noticing, the sound effects are wonderful, Controls: 10/10- The controls are simple and very easy to learn with Nell helping you on the Field Training missions. Overrall: 40/40- This game is perfect in every aspect, making it very enjoying to play. Anyone who has a GBA or a GBA SP, buy this game today!!! (I am)!!

"Killer App" for the Gameboy Advance

Advance Wars is an addictive turn-based strategy game, with a comprehensive tutorial and a variety of game modes: single player campaign, single player, multiplayer mode where you pass the GBA from player to player after each turn, linked 1-4 multiplayer "VS." using one cartridge with more vs. maps available for multi-cartridge linked multiplay.

Progress through missions and you are awarded coins that allow you to unlock additional parts of the game by purchasing maps. You can also design maps with a built-in map editor, and these maps can be traded with other players via the link cable.

The graphics are detailed, bright, and easy to scan. The interface is minimalist and keeps clutter to a minimum. This game is the "killer app" that should get you to buy a GBA if you don't already have one.

Load up on batteries.

This game is basically chess, with more units, you can move all of your units per turn, and you can create units. It is challenging, but it is very fun. Not to mention its a gameboy game, so you can play it anywhere :)
