Game of the Year...for me at least

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3

This game has it all. Great graphics, great story, and great gameplay. I have a pretty decent mid-range system, and the graphics look great. I do loose a little in frame rate when the action gets heavy, but not enough to [...] about. Believe me, the action does get heavy! Shoot-outs will cloud the screen with dust and smoke, so sometimes you have to wait for the smoke to clear or shoot blindly with the limited amount of ammo you can pick-up. This really cranks the tension up to a high level. These are not cookie-cutter targets either, the AI in this game is the best I've seen in a shooter. They will flank you, work as a team, call for back-up, anything to beat you. If you are fighting 4, and you loose track of one, that's because he's finding a way to get behind you! Some conplained about the lack of different enviroments in which to fight. The plot is working your way through a office building and complex. This is an enclosed area, I loved the presentation. You have to fight in an enviroment that you are not used to fighting in. One minute you are fighting in a wherhouse with trucks and crates all around, the next you are making your way through office space with cubicles (those who look closely will find Milton's red Swingline stapler!!!) Shoot-outs are great. You have to learn to compensate for recoil. Some people think this is a problem with the aiming, but this adds another level of realism to the game. The storyline draws you in, but it does leave a few questions in the end. Hell, that's what sequels are for. Everybody wants to compair it to The Ring, but that's just because there's a creepy little girl in it. One more time for the cheap seats...THIS GAME IS NOTHING LIKE THE RING!!! There are spot that will make you jump, and parts that might creep you out. This is a game best played with headphones, the sound is awesome. The communication between your combatants tips you off to what's going on. Little things like telephone messages give you backround and foreground information also, this is a game to leave no stone unturned. Warning to parents...the "M" rating is there for a reason. Between the language and what a shotgun does when aimed at the waist, this is not one for the kiddies!! I rate F.E.A.R. above Doom 3 and HL2. Don't believe the hype, you don't need an FX55 and SLI to get good graphics, but you will need a decent video card and some memory. Just adjust the game to what your PC is capable of, and have fun!!!

It's HalfLife2 meets Doom3

I haven't played such an exhilarating game since HalfLife2. This game is all about scaring you out of your skin. It combines the creepy elements that you normally find in horror films by the clever use of physics, with the realism of Doom3's graphics, but it doesn't create that scary atmosphere by throwing gores everywhere like in D3. In general, this game is mainly shoot and hide, and keeps you interested with new weapons and enemies as you progress. Most of the time you will be sneaking up behind soldiers, fierce shootout, or battling robots head on. You can also use bullet time in this game to balance out the playing field. Grenades explosions are pretty cool. You can actually see the shockwave as they blow up. The weapons are not too bad either, especially this weapon that penetrates the enemy, and leaves him dangling on the wall if he happens to stand near it when you fire, like the crossbow in HL2. The story is somewhat good. There's a demo for it, if you want to try it out before you buy, but I'm confident that you won't be disappointed with this purchase.

Graphic: 10/10 - If you have a good video card.
sound: 8/10
gameplay: 9/10
replay: varies, I didn't go online with it, and didn't find the need to play the game over again after beating it.

Buy it!

Lives up to the Hype

FEAR does not disappoint.

The game is an excellent jaunt into the genre of suspenseful horror for the FPS style of play. Plenty of thrilling moments, fantastic use of lightning and environment to heighten the experience, and very subtle yet successful employment of great horror elements to keep your blood chilled.

Above all, if you have the capability to appreciate it, are the astonishing graphics and their ability to mold to the action effects around you. FEAR is as much a cinematic experience, especially considering its use of an unraveling mystery and classic film horror techniques, as it is a great game. When you fly into combat you'll actively try to make it look as eloquent and action packed as the game feels. And you certainly won't find yourself bored with the rather intelligent AI and strategic weapon utilization either.

Where FEAR probably comes up short the most is redundancy with level design and art. Many of the textures will start to seem very repetitive before you're even half way through, and they don't get better through the second act. There's rarely more than one way to go and the design concept begins to look identical for every interval before long. The game can be fairly easy with use of the slow mo and insta-saves, even on the hardest setting, and some of the mobs will have trouble navigating certain areas to pursue you.

Even so, I can't think of anything bad to say about the cinematic touches and eloquent horror elements in the game. The puzzles are few and far between, leaving something to be desired, but the action is beautiful and fluid to participate in, even if it feels a bit easy at times. Considering how graceful the action sequences are, how stunning everything is to the eye and how well the game moves along the story, the paltry drawbacks hardly matter in comparison. It's a clear 5 stars.

Don't waste your time weighing if this better than Half-Life 2, Doom, FarCry, or anything else they bring up. It's a superb achievement in FPS gaming, and deserves a place on the throne with every other FPS of its generation.

If you consider yourself an avid FPS player, or a stickler for truly horrifying and suspenseful movies, or even if you just want a slightly different take on a very old and stale genre, you should be playing this game right now. Seriously - *right* now. Kick yourself if you haven't and move your mouse to that order button!

Yes and No...

The below reviewers are right and they are wrong. The game is fantasic. Period.

Good points:
-Great graphics. No you don't need a super computer either. My computer is high end, but it isn't SLI enabled and isn't worth 4 grand. I'm running a 1.8 64 AMD, 1 gig ram, nvidia 6800GT (256MB). I didn't have one problem running the game. Yeah, the 68 does alot, but if you aren't running at least 128 MB right now and you're into first person shooters, then it's time to upgrade anyways. The new generation of shooters demand alot from a PC and it is necessary towards the evolution of FPS from the old school "run and shoot", to the strategic masterpieces that we see today.
-Good Plot. Yeah, I guess its a bit "formulaic", but only if you're picky. There's also a great twist towards the end that drops your jaw.
-Amazing Weapons. You only get to hold three, which forces you to become strategic with what you use.
-Beautiful environments. Yeah, some would say they get repetative, but it's also realistic. Has anyone actually walked through an office building before?? It all looks the same! Warehouses and science buildings too! That's the side effect to making a large building.
-The slow mo feature is amazing. You can slow down time which allows you to take better aim and react a little quicker outside of the game.

Bad points:
-Though the enemy's AI is good, you can quickly interpret what the enemy will do depending on your actions.
-Sometimes the enemy just....knows you're there. It can be a little frustrating to walk around a corner in complete darkness or when the enemy isn't looking in your direction and suddenly get shot at even though it wasn't possible to be seen.
-Kind of like the last point, Stealth is an issue. Confrontation is 99 percent of the time required and can sometimes be taxing.
-The ending IS a slight let down in two different ways. The first is the lack of an end boss. There's an end level, but no boss. It's a let down because there's such a buildup for one, but never has one. The second would be the actual ending. I wont spoil it, but the epilogue lasts about 2 minutes and isn't very entertaining. Actually, now that I think about it, it's alot like "The Ring's" ending in some ways.

Another sort of Neutral aspect of the game is the reloading feature. There's no checkpoints. Also, if you save just before going into a room and attacking baddies, then reload because you didn't like how it went, the baddies stay alerted so you cant cheat and take an advantage by reloading. I think that it's cool, but it's a pain too :) .

The game does have a few goodies from other games, but nothing big. If you're looking for something to blow half life away, then keep looking. You wont find anything. Try not to think of every new game as a blowout of a previous game. It's like trying to compare lord of the rings to the matrix or star wars. They're all great!

In any case, this is a great game that takes a few to beat and challenges you in several different ways.

Reason why you may not like FEAR

I read alot of reviews for this game before buying it and heard alot of reasons why it was a wonderful game, arguably the best FPS of its time. What I didnt hear alot of was reason why a person would NOT like this game, so after playing it through, I figured I would share my thoughts (Dont get me wrong, I LOVED this game, much more than HL2, but Ill touch on that later). You would not enjoy this game much if:

-You don't like getting scared and/or startled. This game does plenty of both. I dont want to ruin the story, but a number of time you encounter this little girl who looks much like the girl from the American version of The Ring. Shes creepy to say the least. Theres a number of dream sequences mid game that are scary. As for startling, doors will suddenly slam in front or behind you, apparitions pop out of no where, stuff inexplicably moves by itself, etc. I would have to stop playing periodically and get the blood flowing back into my hands. My friend played the first two levels and, after seeing his face drain of all color multiple times, said they should a diaper as one of the minimum requirements (And that was only the first two levels, ladies and gentlemen).
-Profanity bothers you. Just about every curse word imaginable is made use of, by both friend and foe. Not a game suitable for your young children, ladies and gentlemen.
-Gore bothers you. In nearly every level, there are numerous corpses burned, shot to hell, knawed upon, etc. Corpses explode into HL giblets and a spray of blood if you hit them at close range with a shotgun. Grenades and such will decappitate enemies-its not uncommon to see a charred head roll by you after setting off an explosion.
-Blood bothers you. There is blood aplenty. A number of the dream sequences involve you wading/swimming through it. Did I mention there was blood? Just so you get the idea, there is a LOT of blood. Hemaphobes, dont play this game.

Like I said at first, I LOVED this game. I loved HL2, but this one takes the trophy in my mind. All the above dont phase me, and what sets this game above all the others in my mind was that it DID scared me. On top of that, the graphics are wonderful (not as good as HL2, but only by a little). The AI is the the most challening yet. I played it on medium difficulty and had to reload at least a dozen times per level. Even if I didnt die (which happened alot) I would finish with little ammo/health left and decide to redo it, knowing I could manage better. Extreme difficulty, dont even get me started. The game is fast paced. The only reason i got through some scrapes was because of SloMo. It allows you to do things like dodge grenades (cant dodge bullets though, sorry), take REALLY careful aim with slow refire weapons, get the drop on a group on soldiers, etc.

A few other things Ive heard people complain about: Level design. The entire game is set in the inner city. Theres a few quick parts where youre outdoors, going from one building to the next, but thats it. Its all set in warehouses, abandoned factories, office buildings and the like. Theres not a high diversity of enemies. Theres three varieties of basic grunt soldier, a heavily armored soldier, a biped mech or sorts, members of a security force, some sort of cloaked assassins, and turrents, floating and stationary. You of course have the ghosts, but they dont pose much of a threat.

Post note: I use HL2 as a reference point because most people either have played HL2 or have seen it played. I didnt mean to pick on HL2 at all. I happen to like that game. Its just at the moment, its the FPS from which the others are judged.

No Half Life 2, but it's well worth the money

The Good:

Graphics, sound effects... all well done. The story is good. Great, even, if not compared to HL2. The array of weaponry and the slow-motion fighting - that you control - makes the game very cool. Certainly, one of the best FPS to come out in some time.

The AI is fantastic. They hide, they retreat and regroup. They distract you with cover fire while their buddy reloads. And they will try to flank you and get behind you. Amazing. This is one area in which Steam could've learned a thing or two.

The game is scary. It has a cinematic feel to it which makes the plot that much more rich.

The Bad:

The soundtrack blows hard. I'm not talking about the sound effects and the slight musical abbreviations that pair with the "spooky" parts. I mean the foundation sountrack. As your jogging about, looking for more people to kill, there is this underlying sountrack. It's really less of a soundtrack and more of a few melodies and sound effects on a continuous loop. It's pretty uncreative, monotonous and annoying. The good thing is that it changes. The bad thing is that the new tracks never really get any better.

There is no open areas in the game. The levels have claustophobic feel to them. You are more or less indoors the entire time. The most open area of the entire game is a parking garage - and that part is very brief.

The characters apart of the plot are trite and boring. The NPC scripting is a bit childish and tends to take away from the richness of the plot. This is something that they failed to learn from HL2... you need good writers.

All being said, the game is good. It has a few downfalls that keep it from 5 star status, but its definitely worth the purchase.

Repetitive, but still a fun shooter

Graphics

+ Sports some top-of-the-line graphics. The models are incredible at the highest of settings. The explosions are intense and visceral, destroying everything around them (including turning enemies into mulch). Lots of detail laid about giving you a real feeling of being inside a corporate office high-rise.

- Repetitive environments. Most of the time is spent in an office format with you going between the cubicles and halls battling a very low number of different kinds of enemies (you fight the 'clone soldier' for most of the game). The game is not optimized very well. Source engine this is not -- expect it to run choppy even if you're up to the specs are beyond it (I suggest 2-gigs of RAM).

Sound

+ High-end quality sound. Much like Max Payne and other games featuring slo-mo, the sound becomes mutilated, twisted, and deafened when using the feature. It creates an intense scenario, where bullets can be seen and explosions experienced from their very first spark to their final settling of dust and debris -- and it all sounds top-notch. The guns have enough 'oomph' to be satisfying, especially the scatter-gun.

- No real negatives.

Story

Interesting, but detatched from the game. There is a strong intro and the story flows very well at the start, but then around the middle it just disappears entirely. It picks up again at the end (and strongly so). But ultimately the story isn't anything to write home about: clones, freaky girl with twisted back-story, crazy psychodelic commander threatening the world/whatever; you're a special soldier who has super-reflexes (hence the slo-mo). It's on the B-side of any average thriller out there.

Gameplay

Repetitive. The slo-mo is a novelty and wears thin quick (especially for anyone who has played the Max Payne games) -- as does the low number of enemy types thrown at you. I could only shoot my way through a game envisionment of Office Space so many times... While immersive at times, the game simply lacks any sort of variety and really slows down at times (contra to the fast-paced action and quick scares). In this day and age of expansive, intriguing video-game worlds (Far Cry's beautiful island-scapes, Half-Life 2's ever changing environments), F.E.A.R. just doesn't hold up. The one trick-pony is fun for a few rides, but after awhile you're really just beating a dead horse.

Bottom Line:

Awesome graphics and sound; gameplay suited for quick sit-downs of action, but really starts to age when played for too long.

Best fps horror

F.E.A.R. is one the best horror games I have played,
It's like Silent hill in First person view.
There was one great part where you jump into this pool of water and instantly go into a diffrent realm, It was awsome.
The Graphics are awsome too. The levels are well detailed,
Now about levels being repetitive, I actually had to replay fear just to see what everyone was talking about.
Now that I whent over It again, I can say that they are repetitive,
I did'nt notice that before, Probably because I was too busy kicking a** lol.
About the language: I did'nt see anything wrong with the language after all If you were getting shot at what would you say?
About the violence: Does FPS mean anything to ya'll. I did'nt see anymore violence in this game than I did in Metal Gear Solid or The Punisher.
The story: This game is like one of those movies that you actually have to follow through and payattention too. But If the story does'nt keep you playing the action will.
About Replayability: you'll probably play this game about once or twice, Because going around the second time does'nt offer anything. No story changes. No unlockables. Nothing new.
But the greatest thing about the ai is that there unpredictable. (Meaning they don't strike the same spot)
I was shooting one guy while the other guy sneeked around the corner behind me.
Enemies being repetitive, I think not.
The only thing I hated about F.E.A.R. is the 5cds they should have put
It on dvd, or did they? If they did I could'nt find It so I'm stuck with 5cds

Now about the specs. I have a upgraded gateway gt5040 Pc
Video/Graphics card: SAPPHIRE 100176L Radeon X1950PRO (one not two),
and 3 gigs of ram
That's all I've upgraded soo far.
I can run fear at max flawlessly.
and thats without using crossfire (two video cards).
Looking at everybodys specs, there computers seemed to be more powerfull
than mine. But yet can't run at max settings. Maybe It's Geforce lol, or probably ram.

About the cd being needed in the drive to play. Get a nocd crack at gamecopyworld.com or Alcohol 120% at alcohol-software.com

Overall: A great game to play once or twice, But some may find it too violent or too much bad language. Just download the demo befor you buy it.

May be it is a good game if you had a high end video card

Warning! If you can play Battlefield 2 in highest resolution doesn't mean your video card can support this game. I have a Geforce FX 5600 ultra and played BF2 in highest resolution, Half-life 2 in highest resolution and setting but only can play FEAR in 620x600 resolution ? radiculus and unbelievable. Why? don't ask me Ask Sierra. BE..BE.. BE.. CAREFUL and check your video card before buying this game

Addictively Freaky FPS

This is without a doubt a revolution in the FPS ("first person shooter" for those who don't know) games. As an unamed member of F.E.A.R., you're job is to hunt down and stop a renegade military leader and his army of mind controlled lackies in their reign of terror. Thats where the story begins (complete with the graphic sequence of the revolt by the bad guys) but it quickly "goes to hell" when you start hearing wierd "white noise" over your comm-link, hearing taunting voices, and seeing weird stuff like people disintegrating as they walk past you and (taking a page from japanese pop-horror) a mysterious girl in a red dress that appears and disappears without warning.

Some of the, what I consider, innovated new features provided in this game are the "hidden story", slow-mo, and realistic death physics. The "hidden story" is such that the vast bulk of exposition and nessecary parts needed to understand what the **** is going on is hidden throughout the game within laptops and voice-messages. Without actively searching for clues, the player will never know approximately 80% of what is happening and why. You can still finish the game without searching for clues, but you will be more confused than ever. Slow-mo takes a page from movies like _The_Matrix_ and _The_One_ in that, when in a pinch, all you need to do is hit "Slow-mo" and your character's hightent reflexes and agility enables you to move and react significantly faster than you opponents. You even see air streams bullets leave in their wake. The physics in this game are phenominal. If you're jaw doesn't drop from the blood splattering, it will when you make an enemy flip head over heels as you blast point blank at his leg with your shot gun or (my favorite surprise that I discovered) seeing you drop kick a fallen baddie and witness him fly head first into a concrete wall (with equally bloody results).

As you have already seen, this game is very graphic when it comes to violence. Language is not spared either, especially considering the amount of wierd and freaky stuff that goes on. And when i mean freaky I mean stuff that makes you jump at every little pebble that falls on the ground. I had to play with the sound turned down it was that freaky.

Rated M for all the above reasons (and for good reason...parents please listen to the ratings for this game!!!), this fright-fest is perfect for any action/fps/horror gamer out there. It even has a kick-*** multiplayer option too.
