Rock On!

Play with a bunch of friends or on your own. Either way, this product rocks the house! I haven't played guitar hero since I got it. I do wish that they had more music that I recognize, but once I get the song down, I realize that I enjoy most of the music on it. I can't wait for Rock Band 2!

Great Fun...but price means some shortcuts on quality

OK, so I HAD to buy Rock Band because playing it every month or so at my friend's house just wasn't cutting it. I actually play guitar in real life (and have all the Guitar Hero titles for PS2), but I've always been drawn to the drums, so there was no question that Rock Band would be added to our library eventually. Only problem is we went with Wii for our current console, and as of this writing, there's still no clear answer on when (or if) it will be out for Wii. Ultimately, I was too weak to wait any longer for news on the Wii front, and we brought the game home to start rocking.

I started out on a solo drum tour, and can say that they definitely nailed the gameplay. The interface is familiar to anyone who has played Guitar Hero, so the main issue for novice drummers will be learning coordination between left vs right hand, and hands vs feet. My first quality concern was the cord that connects the kick pedal to the top of the set. It's an old-school coiled wire that stretches fairly tight once plugged in. Even being careful to unplug when not in use, I have a fear that eventually the stretching is going to separate the jack or something. Other reviewers have reported that their kick pedals broke. I haven't had the problem myself, but they apparently sell devices to reinforce the pedal mechanism to (hopefully) extend the component's life. My only problem with the kick pedal so far has been finding the sweet spot to place it in. It helps to put something heavy in front of the set so it doesn't slide away from you while playing.

The next day I tested out the guitar side of things. Again, the gameplay is excellent, if not slightly less difficult than Guitar Hero. (Some of the songs appear on both games, and there are definite differences in some patterns and phrases.) My friend bought the PS3 version of Rock Band, which is not compatible with his PS3 GH controller, so I was anxious to verify whether my PS2 GH controllers would work with RB. Thankfully, they work great. Which is a huge bonus for me since I can't believe how low-quality the RB guitar controllers feel. This is quality issue #2. The strummer button on my friend's guitar works intermittently, and mine has spotty functionality on the overdrive tilt feature. (For the latter, the Select button also works. For the former, it sounds like you need to join the many other reviewers who have had to return their controllers to EA for replacement.) Another friend said it best: you'd think they would have got the guitars right. I ended up loaning my RB guitar to my friend so he can have 2 guitars while waiting for Sony to release the patch to make PS3 GH and RB guitars compatible, or for guitars to become available separately.

So the Rock Band at my house consists of drums and two Guitar Hero guitar controllers. The microphone works also, but we only had three band members the first night, so we're still looking to audition a vocalist. And even though I would call my quality concerns significant, this game is a blast, and I would recommend it in a second. Mainly because the $150 price tag is pretty decent when you get right down to it. Initially the price seems huge, but the drum controller has to be factored accordingly. Drums sell separately for $80, which means you get the software, a guitar and a mic for $70. Even with less options and no download capability, the game alone can carry itself just fine.

Solo play may slow down as songs are unlocked at various difficulty levels, but getting people rocking out at parties, especially if they're new to the game, could pay dividends well into the future. There have been complaints about lack of versatility in song choice, but I think they did a great job crossing genres and eras. Dani California is one of the better songs to showcase how great the game is. Also, a larger percentage of songs are performed by the original artists than found in GH, which definitely adds value.

gh franchise still better to me

overall i like the game. the drums are good but i dislike the foot peddle (very tiresome after just a few songs). the guitar is fine but with the new inset fret buttons it takes a wile to get use to. makes for easier sliding to get back and forth on, but they seem to stick a little. also they did away with the click when u stum. seems like a good idea but i find it harder to time on notes that are close together. as for the songs, good selection for the most part, wish the ps2 version had downloadable songs tho. i find them all easier than guitar hero. for instance i can play every song on the hardest level of guitar on rb but then i go back and play gh 2 on the hardest level and cant get the harder songs. i dont regret buying this product in the end, its really fun, plus when i do upgrade to a ps3 the instruments do work with it so ill just have to buy the game itself, or the sequel depending on how long that is.

The ability to play with others in a band is just awesome for the non-musician and the ability to add additional equipment is great too. Only downside is the lyrics for the singer are so small (and this is on a 50" HDTV) that you have to be what I consider too close to the screen to read them (as in like 3-4 feet).

best game ever

This is the best game I have ever purchased. My whole family enjoys it and friends come over to play it and we have tons of fun. My 14 year old son had a Rockband birthday party and all the kids loved it. It is fun for all ages. This was a great purchase.

I love this game! It is great to be able to have four people play together and have a blast. The only problem I had was my HDTV set up caused a delay in the sound, making it very difficult to play. I purchased an HD program to update my PS2, and it helped, but it did not solve the problem. I have since hooked my PS2 and Rock Band up to a standard-def TV and it is much more fun to play now. One improvement I would have liked is a wireless microphone.

The game is awesome. It's pretty realistic in esence. I'm a drummer. I only have a problem with the metric system of the game but thank God it can be calibrated. It's a great game in overall.
