Game Not Broken, Guitar Bad, Playstation Dirty

We bought this from Amazon and were very happy with the service, always have been. Unfortunately it is defective and a person has to go through hoops to get a replacement. It can't be shipped back to Amazon and replaced, you need to go through EA games. When you open the package there is a notification saying if it doesn't work contact EA games, do not contact the vendor. I did contact Amazon and they responded helpfully but time will tell if we get ours. It also went down in price in 1 week. Oh well, pray for me.

UPDATE: also I would give it 5 stars but I can't change it on Amazon's site.

EA Games took very good care of us after we found out the guitar was defective and they replaced it delivered within 5 days. The game is a blast, I was wrong about the game being broken, My playstation was dirty and after I cleaned it the game worked great. Our whole family plays it and have a lot of fun. Also Amazon was helpful also in getting me the information I needed to get the guitar replaced. HIGHLY RECOMEND THE GAME

A word of warning

Just a word of warning. I purchased this bundle yesterday from another retailer(Target). Got it home, set everything up, inserted the game, and nothing. I investigated to make sure it was not something on my end, but my console reads everything else I have fine.

So my next step was to try to contact EA customer support. After I finally got a live person, I found out that EA is suing Sony over this game because apparently the game is on something called a multi-layed disk. Which Sony told EA all PS2's would be able to read. Well EA is aware of at least 7 different production runs of PS2's that have been reported as not being able to read the game. My recourse? Not EA's problem. Call Sony, or take the game back and try to get my money back. I'm going to try to call Sony today and see where I get, mostly because I don't want to repack everything. I'll update with what happens.

But for now, if you have a PS2, I recommend checking into this by contacting Sony to make sure your system will read these multi-layered disks before you waste your time.

Fun but missing features for PS2 version

This is a really fun game that the whole family can play. I have played this game at a neighbors house on the XBox 360 and noticed they have a few more features available than the PS2 version. In the PS2 version, there is no way to create and customize your own players. The PS2 version also lacks the ability to play online and to download new songs. It is a very cool game which sees a lot of action from my family.

Overrated

Ok, I'll make this quick. It's a glorified version of Guitar Hero. Yes, the drums are cool, the mic is cool, 2 guitars are cool. Great party game. Unfortunately, only 58 songs. False advertising on that you can't make you own characters. Great party game, but seeing as you can't do the online thing and get any more songs or really customize or unlock anything, go buy a 360 or ps3 if you want to get the most out of it. Or just buy the game itself to rock out with guitars you already have (gh guitars work with this pretty well). So if it wasn't false advertising on what you could do with the ps2 version, it would get a 5 star because then you wouldn't go in with false expectations.

(and before anyone blasts me for posting this review, it's a great game, but not worth the big money that it's going for. And I like customizing things and unlocking things as well as playing the songs, and there's not that many songs)

I prefer Guitar Hero

We set this game up, and after messing with the calibration for a half an hour finally got to play. We were horrible. I knew I had no rhythm but the drums were frustrating. In Guitar Hero I'm pretty good, I get about 98% or higher on medium level (still kinda suck on hard), but with rock band I almost fail easy songs. This leads me to believe that the calibration is STILL way off. I guess I'll have to drag this into my bedroom on my normal teeny tiny TV... smash everyone in the cramped room and try it again...great party game. The guitar controller is a piece of crap, I hate the strum bar, and the start/select buttons are too close to the bar so I kept accidently hitting them with my hand.
I'm a girl, so naturally my voice is higher than the singers, and found I'd only get "Awesome" when I sang in exaggerated low vocals. Also for a kareoke game they chose some weird songs, that Im guessing most people wouldn't know very well...but I did have a blast singing In Bloom and Say It Aint So.
I guess on my day off I'll have to spend the day really figuring out the calibration and getting used to drums. I just feel a little disappointed. When I first got Guitar Hero I sucked, sure, but I at least had a lot of fun learning. This game just frustrated me.

Actually got my WIFE to play it!

Fantastic FUN! Great challenge! Hours of enjoyment - downside is there are LIMITED songs - we BREEZED through the EASY setting in 2 sittings (about 6 hours total...) as for MEDIUM setting - it does get more difficult.
The beauty is anyone can play - it's great for eye/hand coordination and most of the songs I enjoy!
And oh yeah - my wife wanted it more then I did after using it at a Best Buy (Amazon was SO much cheaper though!)! She plays the guitar!
It is worth the price for the game and it is actually very clode to playing REAL drums... like I said the only negative is the limited songs that you get with the game (and half are only worth listening to)...

gh franchise still better to me

overall i like the game. the drums are good but i dislike the foot peddle (very tiresome after just a few songs). the guitar is fine but with the new inset fret buttons it takes a wile to get use to. makes for easier sliding to get back and forth on, but they seem to stick a little. also they did away with the click when u stum. seems like a good idea but i find it harder to time on notes that are close together. as for the songs, good selection for the most part, wish the ps2 version had downloadable songs tho. i find them all easier than guitar hero. for instance i can play every song on the hardest level of guitar on rb but then i go back and play gh 2 on the hardest level and cant get the harder songs. i dont regret buying this product in the end, its really fun, plus when i do upgrade to a ps3 the instruments do work with it so ill just have to buy the game itself, or the sequel depending on how long that is.

Tremendous fun, but a step down from GH3

Let me start by saying, this game is awesome. If you order it, you won't be sorry. However, there are things here and there, if you've played GH3, that are irritating or sad.

1. The guitar's strum toggle is sticky. Instead of a nice 'clack' so you know you've played a note, you just get a gradually increasing resistance to your strum. You're not sure exactly when you've played the note, and pushing it all the way really wears your strumming hand out quickly.

2. No more cut scenes. Come on, the cut scenes in GH3 were hilarious. Not exactly critical to the gameplay, but it would've taken ten minutes to just pop a funny animated story into Rock Band.

3. Some of the transcriptions (from music to falling colored blocks) are ridiculous. There are far too many songs where, on the guitar, you're simply wailing away on one note for what seems like a good two minutes. Hint: on Highway Star, I should not be playing rhythm guitar while listening to a faded-out, awesome lead guitar in the background.

4. The drums do not mix with downstairs neighbors, and apparently nobody in design gave this a second thought. We put towels under our set.

5. Sure, Queens of the Stone Age suck, but putting that aside, here are some beefier complaints about the song list: Cherub Rock and When You Were Young WERE IN GH3! If you were playing Super Mario World, and found yourself compelled to beat the underwater level from Super Mario Bros, you'd feel gypped. And so do I. 'Maps' isn't even a rock song. They specifically passed on the title "Elevator Music Band" for a reason.

All that said, I am still glad I own the game. If you like the musician-type games, this is a must-have.

Fun game marred by limited advancement.

My wife and I have found Rock Band to be fun and exciting, however there are a couple of issues with the game that make it ultimately somewhat annoying.

1. The learning curve is not smooth. You can be jamming along and everything is great, and you will come upon a song rated at the same difficulty that is impossible to complete. GH3 has a much smoother progression of songs which brings you up easily.

2. The Vocals player does not contribute directly to points when they complete phrases.

3. The accuracy of timing on notes required on medium is perhaps too tight.

4. Once you get to 260,000 fans you can't get anymore until you can play at the Hard level. There is a large gap between the medium songs and the Hard songs making a barrier to continued unlocking play.

5. The game is so strict on note accuracy that 10ms of timing difference set in the options can have a significant impact on your performance. This is so wrong, and it bothers me to no end. I like GH3's note accuracy model much better. It provides challenge without being needlessly annoying.

6. I feel that the notes are not well represented in Rock Band. I find myself noticing that the buttons required for play don't seem to really match what notes are playing in the song. GH3 seems to be much closer. In GH3 my hand begins to "know" what to play if I know the song.

I actually started playing GH3 after playing Rock Band. I had become annoyed at the learning curve on RB, so I switched to GH3. Also the GH3 guitar controller seems better made. My RB controller has a broken Wa wa bar brand new. I've scheduled a new replacement, but I have not seen the RMA box yet in the mail after 2 weeks.

All these detractors aside, it is really fun to play the game with my wife. We really enjoy nailing a song with me on Guitar, and she on the vocals.

Not bad considering

First, if you're thinking about getting this game and you have the option to, buy it on the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360. The Playstation 2 version of the game itself is stripped down to the minimum acceptable level. No Downloadable Content (or online of any sort for that matter), World Tour suffers terribly, no customization whatsoever.

I first bought the PS2 Special Edition because I did not yet own either the PS3 or Xbox 360 and didn't want to waste too much money if I didn't like the feel of the game at all. Later on I ended up getting a PS3 and Rock Band was amongst my first titles I bought for it. I instantly felt like I'd made the right choice.

Something to note:
All the peripherals inside the PS2 Special Edition are completely identical to the PS3 Special Edition, with the exception that the PS2 version includes a 4-port USB Hub, which is particularly nice should you need the ports on say a 40gb PS3 in the future (as the system only has 2 available USB ports) or for your general computer needs.

To date, I've expanded the basic 58 songlist up to 96, and soon to reach 100+. New Downloadable Content songs are added to the Playstation Network Store and Xbox Live Marketplace each week at a price range of $1-2 each, or in song packs (generally consists of 3 songs for $5.49). And should you be in a hurry to get the new DLC, Xbox Live Marketplace updates their Rock Band content a few days quicker than the Playstation Network Store does.

Anyways, that's my small contribution to the product page. I hope this and the other reviews given here have been of some help.
