Demonstrations of Power

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 1

Ion Storm has come a long way since the John Romero days. No longer the house of delays and duds, the company now produces some of the finest games in the business. Critically acclaimed Deus Ex and Anachronox allowed the group to grab, and hold, a respected position amongst their peers. And now Deus Ex 2, and Thief 3, will allow the teams to prove that they weren't just lucky.

The verdict: These kids can amaze.

Deus Ex 2 takes place years after the first; it features new characters, new plotlines, new weapons, and old locales. But don't be surprised to see a few familiar faces in your return visit to post-modern Earth.

The story is just as convoluted as it was before, blending various conspiracy theories with quasi-philosophical gameplay choices. From the outset to the finish, you're presented with numerous choices that affect the way the game takes shape.

Gameplay has remained excellent, but some may gripe about missing RPG elements that existed in the first. The ammunition system is now unified, so you can pick a weapon and stick with it. Controls have been "consolefied", making it easier to perform jumps and shoot. The dual-stick control scheme is perfect.

Running parallel to the standard set by its gameplay, Deus Ex 2's graphical and aural effects deserve a mention. High-count polygon models covered with wicked textures have been lit to high heaven. In Deus Ex 2, besides looking super-cool, the lighting actually plays an important part with the game. You can guage enemy locations and actions by watching their shadows. Music and sound permeates every ounce of game, and has been advanced to levels far beyond the predecessor. Sound effects and music are both top notch and immersive.

But, despite all the positives, Deus Ex 2 still has a few missteps. The endings are not rewarding in the slightest; you'll spend many hours exploring and conquering the game's world, only to be given something slightly more exciting than "Thanks for Playing". The new bio-modification system does promote some strategy, but also promotes irritation with your inability to develop into a super-being. While fairer for the computer, the system would have been much cooler, and more fun, if it allowed you to modify one region of your body with more than one mod.

Overall Deus Ex 2 is a worthy sequel to the amazing original. Despite a couple flaws, it delivers on every level and will be enjoyed by fans of the first.

Good Game.... and just for xbox

Ok let me tell you about this game. Its a good game and I have a good reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I just played the demo of this game. Even though it was just a game demo it still looked really good. Nice graphics and cool wepons. Please don't get me wrong about this game its a really good game but I gave it 4 stars just because I didn't really play the actuall game.... just the demo. But I do sugest that you go out and buy this game, or you can just get the January issue of the official xbox magazine. It comes with a demo packed game disk and that disk has Deus Ex: Invisble War

So go out and get it... you won't regret it trust me

not as good as The Conspiracy for ps2.

The graphics are way better vs the conspiracy for ps2.. but the game play isn't there so much. I was bored most of the way through this game. It didn't have that much to draw me into the story. The biomods are kind of lame and aren't that big of a factor in gameplay. There's multiple endings which is cool. The framerate gets choppy quite a bit in areas and in places you wouldn't expect them to also.. A fan of the first but not the second in the deus ex series.

Good game on the XBOX platform

Deus Ex IW is a great game on the XBOX. The graphics have been sharpened, the bugs all cleaned up..of course for it being on a platform. I wont repeat what's already been said numorous times about the gripping storyline and weapon system. I would however recommend playing the first Deus Ex because you'll need a lot of background info to fully understand the plot later in DE:IW. I only wish that Eidos would've taken A LOT more time into making the PC version so they could enjoy the fun too. If you plan on getting this game for your PC as well..CHECK YOUR SYSTEM TOP TO BOTTOM; VIDEO CARD, SOUND CARD, RAM, THE WHOLE 9 YARDS, because there is HUGE compatibility problems and 9 out of 10 chances the game wont work on your PC system. Anyway if I were you get the XBOX version..no bugs...no compat issues...and....it's a lot better story told over the XBOX.

Very fun game . I had no problems with biomods running out . HINT: get the mods that dont use any energy at all. They never run out. As for controls easy, easy, easy. And oh yeah did I say easy.I always seemed to find plenty of biomod refills. The blackmarket mods have some of the better advantages. THIS GAME WAS MORE FUN THAN KOTOR , FOR ME ANYWAYS.

IT'S......OK :)

Hype! I love hype. The kind of hype that says this game is going to have revolutionary graphics and gameplay. Unfortunitly most things that are hyped don't live up to it as is the case with Deus Ex 2. Let's start with the highly touted graphics: the textures in this game suck, they're muddy, dirty, and washed out, frankly they look as though they belong on the PS2 I HATE THEM! It is true the game does have good lighting effects but they do not over shadow the otherwise bland and boring level disign. Also the rag doll physics are realy lame and unrealistic. Next the other over hyped portion of this game, the gameplay: it's not that f-ing original, it's not. What it is though is very linear and uninspierd. My biggest complaint in this area is my biggest overall: the shooting. This game is a first person shooter G---amnit; now I know the games creators would like to think that they crafted some sort of revolutionary RPG but that is just not the case. First and fore most this game is a FPS and shooting people is realy boring and in no way satisfying. Lastly the soposed "great story" is realy not that special, it's just recycled X-Files you are not alone shlok (did I spell that right?). Just about everybody I know admits that this game was at least somewhat disapointing, be warned.
