The sequel that is not a sequel

Okay, If you played Deus Ex and are about to buy Deus Ex 2, hold on at least till you read this. This game completely scraps the RPG elements and great things it had going for it from the first. They dumbed the game down, changing the inventory, having unified ammo--Yes, that means that the pistol uses the same ammo as the flamethrower. Other than the storyline, there is no similarities from the original. Not only is the point system gone, locational damage gone, there is pathetic AI, blocky, tiny levels, cartoonish characters and various other bad graphical effects. This game fails in comparison from the first, so if you are looking for more of the good ole same style game play from Deus Ex, play through Deus Ex again. Or you could wait a week until this game end up in the bargin bin. A complete disapointment and failure in game design. Keep your hands off or play the free demo if you dont take my word.

A waste of great potential

Let me first state that I am a huge Deus Ex (original) fan. That seems to be the trend for those writing poor reviews on this complete waste of silicon. I am thanking my lucky stars that I decided to rent before buying. Anyway, lets break this down in to a few pro's and cons.

PROS-
1) Deus Ex universe. The storyline is at least somewhat interesting. It has the same twists and inability to trust anyone like the original.
2) Interface is acceptable. I thought that when you got the hang of it, this was pretty well done.
3) Mods are interesting. I like the fact that we had "black market" mods. However, please see that this is in the CONS section as well.

CONS-
1) Glitches, flaws, and other crashes. This game seems to have been rushed out the door with a mere passing over with the hands. At least serious game makers, like those of Halo 2, have the determination and dedication to push back a release date to ensure that they have the best possible game. This thing has horrible loads times, horrid frame rate, and actually stalled on the console. I have never seen a game do that in the history of consoles!! That just doesn't happen!! If you want the PC version, be prepared for far worse. The game will cost you the price of a new system.
2) AI with the IQ of a turnip!!! In the last game, if you stabbed a group in the back...that's it, you are never going to work for them again. In this, you stab all you like, they'll take more. Also, in the original, you shoot someone, the other enemies scatter and start firing. Here, they are a little slow on the uptake to say the least.
3) Good drama involves invested characters. In the original, you were invested in the story and characters. Here, you don't care at all. Therefore, the story just plugs along like a train with nobody at the brakes, and no passenger truly caring where they are going.
4) Mods are merely acceptable. "Black Market" mods are cool, but you know which ones people are going to pick. In addition, in the original, mods were a prized commodity, especially since you had to find mods specifically engineered for a body part. Here, they throw mods at you like Mardi Gras beads, and you can use them for anything! Where did the challenge go?
5) Lastly, it ain't the first one. The first Deus Ex outshines this one like a candle in the summer sun. This was a Deus Ex game in name only. At least in the first one, I cared.

To sum up, save yourself $30 to $45 and rent this game. It is good entertainment for those with no real life to speak of, or when you are seeking a way to escape the in-laws/family when on vacation and you have nothing else important to do. Besides, you will finish the game in the rental period anyway, and you have gotten out of your system and have the money to have a good night out with friends, or to buy a real game.

what were they thinking??

what a horrible dissapointment. another victim of the hype machine. the reason this game is so horrible and utterly unplayable is due largely to (major) technical flaws. the storyline seems promising. the game play looks good too...on paper. both the storyline and gameplay would have definetly made this game a 5 for sure, but unexcuseably horrible framerates, long loading times, tricky controls, and pretty much a half assed job on presentation buries all that could have made this game a winner. i played the game a good number of times just to attempt to find some good in it, but the more i played the more frustrated and angry i got. i had to shut it off. it now sits on my shelf and has collected a lot of dust since i got it. this is all unfortunate because i was a huge fan of the orginal deus ex. the game was brilliant. maybe the best game i ever played. anyway- if you are even thinking about going out and buying the pc version instead, you better be sure your comp packs at least 128mb vid card, 256 to play the dam thing. also make sure u hav a gig of memory, a processor that runs above 2.0 GHz. trust me. i tried the PC demo. even more unplayable than the xbox version. the developers completely lie about the system requirements on the box. so all in all- give up on this game. its not worth the frustration. all im thankful for is that i didnt buy this game myself. i got it as a gift. theres a million of better xbox game out there right now. personally, i reccomend you go check out crimson skies. awesome game. anyway, be thankful i warned you before you completely wasted your money on this peice of utter crap.

IT'S......OK :)

Hype! I love hype. The kind of hype that says this game is going to have revolutionary graphics and gameplay. Unfortunitly most things that are hyped don't live up to it as is the case with Deus Ex 2. Let's start with the highly touted graphics: the textures in this game suck, they're muddy, dirty, and washed out, frankly they look as though they belong on the PS2 I HATE THEM! It is true the game does have good lighting effects but they do not over shadow the otherwise bland and boring level disign. Also the rag doll physics are realy lame and unrealistic. Next the other over hyped portion of this game, the gameplay: it's not that f-ing original, it's not. What it is though is very linear and uninspierd. My biggest complaint in this area is my biggest overall: the shooting. This game is a first person shooter G---amnit; now I know the games creators would like to think that they crafted some sort of revolutionary RPG but that is just not the case. First and fore most this game is a FPS and shooting people is realy boring and in no way satisfying. Lastly the soposed "great story" is realy not that special, it's just recycled X-Files you are not alone shlok (did I spell that right?). Just about everybody I know admits that this game was at least somewhat disapointing, be warned.

An involving RPG

I've never played or even seen the original Deus Ex, but I do like Sci-Fi future-tech types of games and movies.

Deus Ex: Invisible War opens with a beautiful, short (considering the story), but well made cut scene and features a slick futuristic presentation and atmosphere throughout - even the menus look and sound like they're from the future. The world that Deus Ex creates is well done and very believable. The graphics, sound effects, and character interaction really set the mood of a possible future Earth. The story is original and complete in the sense that they've covered all aspects of a future society - economy, technology, spirituality, politics, security, class struggle, corruption, conflict, environmental destruction, and even entertainment. The history of how it got that way is pieced together as you progress through the game.

If atmosphere alone made a game, then we'd be talking about an all-time great game, but it doesn't, and it isn't.

The worst thing about Deus Ex is the combat - it's terrible - stiff, akward, and frustrating with clunky A.I. and bad collision detection. After having played games like Rainbow Six 3 and Halo, the combat in Deus Ex looks and feels ridiculous, like something from another era.

Deus Ex: Invisible War does allow you some freedom, but instead of a large open world or city like GTA, it's broken up into small free-roaming sections or buildings that load when you enter and exit them. There should be no doubt that this game is an RPG all the way, through and through. If the designers had been able to incorporate Rainbow Six type of combat in Deus Ex, this game would have been a monster. But as it is, Invisible War is more about exploring, talking to people, picking up stuff, managing your stuff (life energy & biomod energy, credits, weapons & weapon mods, med kits/food, multitools, and biomod abilities) and accomplishing those missions that YOU see fit to take on.

It's in this last aspect where Deus Ex deviates from other games - it actually reacts to what you do (in terms of plot and interaction). The characters in the game are aware of your actions and are constantly trying to get you to come over to their side and work for them - pulling you in different directions and forcing you to think about what you do and how you do it. This intellectual struggle contrasts with the step-by-step linear storyline of most games, and while I can appreciate this unique quality, and the other positives like graphics and setting, I don't feel that it's enough to be able to call this a great game. These positive aspects save the game from being really bad, instead of pushing it up into greatness.

I guess I would rather see a hard-hitting FPS with strong RPG gameplay (character interaction, player modification, and the evolving plot) than an interesting RPG with weak combat, which is what Deus Ex: Invisible War is. It's not a bad game, and it is what I expected (I read a bunch of reviews before buying); it's just that its potential is so great that with a few tweaks here and there, Invisible War could have been a ground breaking iconic type of XBOX game on the level of Halo and possibly bigger due to the engrossing atmosphere and complexity of the Sci-Fi future-Earth world. Instead it's merely an entertaining game with a cool setting and just enough "different" thrown in to make you keep playing it.

Good game... needed more.

First of all, I have to say I don't know what glitches previous reviewers are writing about. At all. I've had absolutely zero problems with the game.

Now, that said, I was disappointed with this game in certain ways. The graphics, outside of the work with lighting, were rather bland. In game play, the weapons don't have enough punch and are strangely difficult to nail people with (in comparison to other FPS like Halo and Medal of Honor); forget about melee weapons like the energy sword unless you want to fill one of your VERY finite enquipement slots with something to break objects for the fun of it ... you won't hit diddly in combat. The skills RPG element of the original Deus Ex is gone, and frankly I found the biomods largely uninspired. IMHO, if they were going to do away with the skills, they should have allowed for more biomod slots, maybe even double the slots or more.

I enjoy playing the game. The difficult factor is about right for a good challenge, and I even like the chee-Z plot. I just wanted more stuff. Should have been more. These things are the little things that should not have been too much trouble to include. Hopefully, they'll try again and fill in these little gaps.

Needs a story line

While I loved the gameplay aspect of this the story line quite positively sucked! Of the 4 possible endings all are lame letdowns and very depressing. I got sick of the storyline half way through the game it was so lame. Someone with some creativity realy needs to get hold of this wonderful engine! I have played the game through only once which is very unusual for me (I replayed the end twice to check out a different ending but the other two are so obvious thier was no need to suffer through it two more times) I suppose if you can afford it this game is worth buying just for the diverse and unusual ways you can do things but if your looking for a fun story dont bother.

Slow load times and ending on Xbox killed it for me....

"You look modified." may be the coin word of the millenium like Robot was in the last one. Nanotechnologies and holograms dominate the future throughout. The game is a sequel that continues 20 years in the future with Alex D the "clone" trainee. You can be male or female with 3 choices of skin color. The game has great potential to be a cult classic and in some cases it is but the slow load times and scarce ammo just kills it for me. The graphics are good but are better on the PC versions compared to the Xbox. Bugs regarding freeze frames are fixed in the Xbox version however, the box still stalls if play over a 6 hour period requiring a "reboot" as it did with me. There are 4 ways to go depending on which side you choose. I seen 2 endings so far. I played the game on default normal and is in reference to that level. The AIs' are good when they are the enemy but as a source of information they can be stupid. Leo in the end was a complete idiot after taking out a faction; questioning Alex D's courage. He becomes useless. I just can't get him to attack anybody else so I kill him for his grenade. NG Resonance is funny and informative in the Air terminal. Little ammo is the main problem I have with the game. I'm totally rationing it throughout the game. Why does it take "2" head shots to kill with a sniper rifle after weapons mods? The advance rail gun is a joke on organic targets. Totally ineffective against even minimum armoured opponents. I can upgrade my Bi-Mods for hacking systems, strength increase, regeneration etc. I don't want to give much away except that the main ending won't please Star Trek fans-- unless it's the foundation for a sequel. After a week of playing, I only get a 15 second ending. I'm playing it a second time as a female and for the start I'm searching for ammo even before I had a weapon. Selecting the right weapon and bi-mod to activate for any given situation can be tedious at times. There is an easter egg regarding a flag in the UNATCO ruins. In the "Dance Room", there's chat logs from the developers about 14 data pads in all. What a bunch of characters!! Is this why there's problems with the game? There's only one way to the VIP Booth in the Easter egg without a key and you're going to have to jump from the speaker boxes to get it. There's nothing there but a good view. On the Xbox, I had to wait 15 seconds between scenes and when I die. Those seconds add up even if the screen displayed hints during the load. In game time, I spend 24 hours. That's about 4.5 days in real time. I was reduced to doing "room clearing" and info gathering like I did in the military. Your actions don't really matter much up to that "point" when you have to take a side. It doesn't matter who you kill. There are only 3 or 4 main ones that determines the outcome of the game. Still it's good game with all the limitations. I really hated where the ending was going and it wasn't what I would call a happy ending. Could have been a great game with more beta testing and a rewrite. I'm glad I got my copy in the "Red Tag" bin for a "Lincoln"!!!!

not as good as The Conspiracy for ps2.

The graphics are way better vs the conspiracy for ps2.. but the game play isn't there so much. I was bored most of the way through this game. It didn't have that much to draw me into the story. The biomods are kind of lame and aren't that big of a factor in gameplay. There's multiple endings which is cool. The framerate gets choppy quite a bit in areas and in places you wouldn't expect them to also.. A fan of the first but not the second in the deus ex series.
