pretty fun

This game is very fun and addicting. You can use focus and run on walls and dive backwards shooting and dodge bullets. But it is simply too easy. Your health regenerates way too fast. I beat this game in probably 12 hours. I'm going to return the rental today. The driving level is very frustrating. Rent it but don't buy it. It's much too short.

I rented the game instead of buying because I'm a poor college student. I beat it in four hours. I was expecting more of a challenge. The one aspect of the game that I liked were the featurettes featuring Niobi and Ghost. Don't belive the hype behind the game play the "focus" feature has been done before and will be done many times over in other better games. Don't buy it save your money for other games and what not. Warner brothers just wants your money.

Lotta sizzle, very little steak

What can I say? Compared to Splinter Cell, this game is really [weak]. Almost impossible to really aim the gun (just point and blast away), almost no control over the fancy stunts, the graphics are not that great, and the engine doesn't allow you to really play 'outside the box'. Splinter Cell seems to be able to handle anything you want to do, like elimintating the bad guys, then wandering around the set and exploring (and shooting) things that most never would look at.
Compared to the hype, this game is rather [weak].

This game is the best I have seen for Xbox yet!

To start off with, this game is very interactive-friendly with the idea that the controls are easy to use during game play. The graphics on this game are phenominal. When you are playing as the characters from the movie, it is exactly like manipulating the movie on your TV screen. The personalities of the characters fit in with the movies and so do the surroundings in the game (subway station, airport, rooftops, etc.)The focus feature is particulary nice as with the press of a trigger, you can see the bullets slow down and you can jump to avoid them. "Focus" can also be use anywhere in the game at anytime. Lastly, the characters moves mimick the moves of the characters in the movies. This game should definately be a top seller.

Stay Tuned for An Incredible license!!

There is little doubt that this is going to be one of the top games of 2003. The December 2002 Game Informer Magazine gave this a full-length feature, and it left little doubt that this is going to be a powerhouse game. Enter the Matrix is being developed with a close collaborative effort between gaming industry and Hollywood so that they can create a game experience "as rewarding as the movie."

There will be ultra-realistic character movements with the over 4,000 motion captures performed and encoded into the game. We are promised over 200 minutes of in-game cinematics and voices from the actors of the film including Keanu Reeves (bless his heart). You can play as Niobe or Ghost, and you play along side characters from the first movie (Neo and Morpeus). Screen shots look promising with plenty of special effects. Unless the something goes terrible wrong between now and the release of this game, we can expect ONE AWESOME GAME!

Nothing but repetition

I was very excited to play this game at first. I loved Max Payne and this game looked like Max Payne with so much more and set in a universe everyone could love. However, once you get over the "gimmicky" aspect of bullet time (in this game called "focus") the game leaves much to be desired. While it is like Max Payne in the "run and gun" aspect the developers forgot that there has to be actual gameplay to back up your "new" whizz-bang technology feature. Hand-to-hand fighting is a nice touch, though it is nothing more than hitting punch and kick a lot.

The controls are absolutely horrid. You can not specify your own set of controls. This wouldn't be such a problem if the 3 options they give you for control schemes weren't so poor. In any setup I tried to use it was hard to control shooting and focus at the same time, especially while trying to snipe.

The level design is pretty atrocious too, merely exacerbating the poor control scheme. I don't know how many times I accidentally fell off a ledge because I couldn't look where I was going (you can't look up or down without going into stationary first person mode) or fell off while I was in a hand-to-hand combo. The levels themselves are merely a small room with 4 guys leading to a bigger room with 6 guys. Repeat that process about a BILLION times and you'll eventaully get to the *biggest* room with *the* guy. Yay!

Any sort of driving mission or gunning mission should simply be ignored. While gunning I just kept my cursor at one point in the screen and held down the trigger. Sometimes I would fail through no fault of my own but rather the poor AI driving the car. Driving missions feel like you're in control of a soapbox racer or something. It ends up being a level where you just keep attempting until you finally pass.

There are many more problems that I would love to exand upon but I think those are the main ones. All its problems coupled with extremely short gameplay leads this to be one of the most disappointing games I've played in a long time. It will leave you frustrated and unfulfilled. The FMV sequences (which most of the time are merely variations scenes you've seen in the 2nd movie) are not enough to even make me consider purchasing this game in passing. Go get Max Payne, loads more fun and style all for about $...

The Matrix Has You!

Ok, ok you have probably heard about this game from somewhere already. Let me tell you this game is truly AMAZING! When I put the game in I honestly thought I was in the movie theater watching the movie! The game immerses you into the Matrix environment so well its unbelievable. The music is from the movies and it is really cool because when you have a gun battle with a lot of guys it plays really cool techno music from the movie. The focus feature is really cool too. You can pull off some cool moves like the Trinity kick, wall-walking, and the famous cartwheel. The fighting engine is very intuitive also. It has true kung-fu moves in it straight out of the movie. Also, there are many fun boss fights with agents and many important characters from the movie. This is definitely the best movie game EVER and the best game on Xbox this year. This game is a truly smart investment. The matrix has you!

Awesome story, horrible graphics and gameplay

Story - A+
Playability - D

The controls for this game are completely non-intuitive, no matter which of the three settings you choose. Using a joystick as a toggle button? Come on.

It is also obvious that this was a very quick port to XBOX, since the graphics are pretty pad. Motion capture "noise" is evident in characters who look very shifty and jerky most of the time (as if they are drunk or something). Also, things like enemies guns and even dead bodies seem to penetrate walls A LOT. More evidence that the engine for this game is not quite fully baked.

Overall, this game had a lot of potential, and is still quite playable, but fails miserably to take advantage of the hardware, does not promote exploring the virtual world, and has counter intuitive controls. Overall, it is not worth full price, but alas will sell well due to its title.

Great graphics, good story, weak gameplay

This game had the potential to be so much more. It's fun, but the gameplay is frustrating. Using a gun is a joke; there is a total lack of any aiming mechanism. Using martial arts is way too easy; making it harder would increase the replay value. The game touts stealth missions, but enemies always spot you immediately and without fail. In general, the game was too easy and too short. I think the powers that be are churning the Matrix machine a little too much with this title. They seem to have given up on making this a truly first rate game. Don't game designers test these things with real gamers before publishing them? Or don't they care? On the flipside, the game has lots of interesting cut-scenes and great graphics overall. It's just that I think I had really high expectations for this title given all the hype that surrounded it and the film.

Every thing they said it would be.
