The greatest game to date on the XBOX.

I can't stress the fact enough. Until GTA3 comes out on the xbox (which is made by the same people, I might add), Max Payne will hold out as being the greatest game that the xbox has. The graphics are amazing, the story is incredibly spellbinding, and it keeps you glued to your seat. The two greatest features of this game is the Bullet Time (r) and the AI difficulty. As some of you might recognize, Bullet Time was the device used in The Matrix to slow down time and swirl around your camera. The reason this feature is so great is because you can slow down a wild gunfight so you can accurately aim without being shot in the process. Also, it just looks incredibly cool. The AI (artificial intelligence) difficulty is also key to making this game so innovative. It recognizes your playing ability and adjusts the game difficulty accordingly.

Pros:
- Incredible graphics.
- Incredible story.
- Bullet Time.
- HUGE arsenal of guns and never a moment where you aren't killing anybody.

Cons:
- A little on the short side.

a lot of overblown hype

Annoying and Repetitive.

Great graphics, great sound, and great story

but....

the game gets annoying and repetitive and here's why:
load time...cut scene...see enemies...go to bullet time...shoot enemies...load time...cut scene...see enemies...go to bullet time...shoot enemies...load time and on and on until the game ends.

the pc version loaded whole chapters at a time while the xbox version loads sections of each chapter at a time. This means that you will be in a gun battle, you will go into bullet time, you will win the gun battle and then you will wait for the xbox to load the next cut scene. This constant loading of these cutscenes that tell the story actually ruins the continuity of the game.

I thought this constant loading actually made playing the game a little annoying. And bullet time gets to be repetitive after learning how to become good at it. If you want to play a game in slow motion then this game is for you.

There is just way too many breaks in the action (xbox loads up next cut scene that furthers the story) for me to fully enjoy this game. I know that the story is integral to the game but they could have presented it in a way that didn't chop up the gameplay into little section after little section.

The controls for this game could have been a little more natural. Sometimes it was difficult just to walk straight ahead.

Bullet time is cool but it just gets to the point where you have had enough of slow motion action.

Great gameplay plenty of action BUT

I just feel that this game is bogged down with too much story and the comic book style cut scenes drive me mad. The voice acting is pretty bad like a late night bad action b movie on cable. I liked the graphics and the controls were pretty easy I spent a few minutes with the tutorial so far it is a fun game plenty of gun play and plot twists (I am on the hotel level as we speak.) This is the first time I have ever played Max Payne and since I got it for $15 from Target it was money well spent despite the "story" recommended to action fans but I only got it on Wednesday I wonder how much longer I'll be playing it? I hope it lasts longer than a Noo Yawk minute though

Get it for the gameplay, not the storyline

The storyline is at first decent, but then it gets really bad...before finally you're wondering if Max is just trying to find an excuse to kill some one...

But the thing that carries this game is, of course, the gameplay. Bullet time and being able to use an assortment of weapons will quickly become addictive on you, and you will find yourself taking on massive enemies feeling like you are truly invincible.

However, I must make one point on a level that caused me to give this 3-stars as opposed to 4...the dreaded nightmare level. Yes, that level indeed was a nightmare. I spent two days beating that damn thing, it was effective the first five minutes, then afterward it just gets to be an annoying part of the game.

Overall though, this was a fun game. Innovative for the gameplay, mediocre for the storyline.

The writing and voice acting are supposed to be bad!

I'm sick of reading the reviews criticizing the writing and voice acting in Max Payne as though they were making an attempt at being serious. It's supposed to be cheesy and stupid, it's the style of the game. Bottom line, kick [butt] game.

If it wern't for Halo, Max Payne would be king

I started playing this game on a friends X-Box and I was hooked. I bought an X-box just for that game, and spent the next few days in my room trying to beat the game. Through the plot twists, bullet time, and new characters, who could be helping you, or setting you up for betrayal, I had no trouble beating it in 2 weeks, but much trouble putting it down. This game is a mush have for shoot em up fans. I did feel however, that the dream leavles would be more fun if there where people you could shoot.

Solid Game (3.5)

First of all, people need to realize that many Xbox games are produced for adults, hence the warnings. Complaining about the blood in this game is understandable but keep in mind that this is an adult game. If I had a son I would not allow him to play.

With that in mind, the game is very film noir and has a pretty decent story. I do hate the voice overs however, some serious over-acting. I like the sound and the lights in the game, they complement the mood nicely.

However, I am in the minority in regards to the bullet time. For me, it doesn't go well with this game and I did not use it very often. Perhaps it got so much pub. because it's a novelty. I guess that is a matter of personal taste. I am glad the game is hard as I love a good challenge but I know some people may be turned off by it. The one thing that irked me though is that the levels seemed rather repetitive.

All in all I liked the game and I can understand why it is very popular. Simple button mashing will get you wasted in a NY minute. It's nice to see some stratgey in shooter games from time to time. :)

Storys Chessey but gameplay more than makes up for it.

OK i LOVED this game the best part was the bullet time u cant get any better than that but anyways....the whole point is gameplay and the story being very weird at times and the gameplay the easiest possible not confusing at all and the way the game levels to ur abblities like if ur not to good at first it'll adjust and make the guys easier and if ur really good it'll get harder and harder but anyways i was expecting to be playing this game for like 2 days i played it for maybe 4 or 5 hours and beat it but maybe thats just me i thought it would take forever to get through levels and it did.....sometimes but other than that this is the BEST game to get and if u dont get it then ur missing out on ALOT!!

This is what gaming is about

What can I say about this game except that it is amazing. You will feel that you just stepped into a movie only the setting isn't so Pleasantville. This game does a truly amazing job at making you feel like you are living the story and who couldn't love the slow-time feature. This game has everything; graphics, sound, gameplay and a great story. I highly recomend this game over any other game except Halo but I wouldn't say Halo is better because they are totally different games each with its own greatness. You must play this game
