Great Game

I've been a fan of troika since the founder's worked at Interplay to develop Fallout. Since their departure from Interplay and their creation of Troika, the studio has had two projects that, while great, have fallen short of their potential. Arcanum had a compelling story with great development but had a lackluster combat system and was very buggy. Temple of Elemental Evil fixed the combat system but forgot the story. With Vampire: Bloodlines, Troika hoped to take the best of their past efforts and combine it with the Half Life 2 engine for sure fire success. And for the most part, they got it.

The game starts out showing you one of its best points. The character customization in Bloodlines is incredibly deep. There are plenty of races of Vampires to choose from with a variety of magical abilities and skills to develop. These abilities can be leveled up as the game goes on through experience.

Experience, unlike in most games, can not be earned by combat. Instead, it can only be earned from quests. This is definitely a plus as it makes the player more willing to experiment with other ways to achieve success in a quest. You don't need to hound down every monster in hopes of leveling up.

Since quests are such an intricate part of the leveling up process, I should probably address them. Quests are very abundant in the game and can be of quite a variety. You might need to break into an apartment and plant an object, scope out a haunted house to solve a murder, or assassinate the leader of a gang. These quests are all interesting for the most part, though I do have one gripe on them. It can get very annoying when you need to get information from a person, and get sent on a goose chase, doing quest after quest for various people just to finally get the information from the desired character.

On the note about the haunted house, you will discover one of the greatest levels ever to grace a video game in this game. The Ocean Beach House is easily the scariest place I've visited in a game and has an amazing ambiance. The level itself justifies the price of admission for the game.

Combat in the game, is immensely fun, though at times very challenging. Characters can battle in various forms to succeed. Characters can sneak up on opponents and murder them, utilize magical abilities to blast their opponents, play at a distance with guns, or get up close and personal with sledgehammers and claws. All of these combat types are viable, making the game playable from various perspectives.

Many reviewers (if not here, in published sources) griped about the poor use of guns. However, I don't see many problems with them. I used them in many sticky combat situations and found the controls fine. While the machine guns and sniper rifles were often hard to control, it improves as your skill does. They act more realistic than in most games and are hardly the mountain people make them out to be.

Overall, this game is much better than many sources will lead you to believe. I believe it more to be a 4.5 but as I don't have that choice, I feel it is closer to a 100 (5) than an 80 (4). I recommend this to any fan of RPGs and suggest FPS fans to give it a try as a break in to the RPG genre.

A highly under-rated game.

This really should have been better received by the gaming community, and hasn't received the accolades it deserves. Despite all the niggles in this one, it is by far one of the most enjoyable games I have ever played. You might have some problems on a lower end machine, but with the patch and some minor tweaks you can earn a respectable framerate with decent graphics. High end machine owners (3Ghz 1GB RAM or so) should have little problems. The combat system isn't as smooth as it could be, but the graphics go a long way to making up for this. This game contains well written dialogue, and an incredibly immersive enviroment. It also has some of the best voice acting I have ever heard on the game. There are several options for customizing your character, and it should be noted that the female models look great, heh, heh. By far one of my favorite games of all time.

I recently revisited this game, and was once again blown away after playing it. Incredibly immersive, well written, and utterly one of the most enjoyable games I have ever played. The style of this game will pull a gamer in, and hold his\her attention well until the wee hours of the morning. This game is best played in the dark. Enjoy!

One of the best games ever!

This game went far beyond any expectations I had for it. The plots are deep, rich and very twisty. Some of the twists you see coming and some you don't. If you like the vampire setting, this game will rock your world!

If there was a drawback, I'd have to say it was the ending. The ending lacks, no matter which ending you choose. The very ending is always very short, and some of them make no sense and leave a lot of loose ends. For such an awesome game, they really didn't work on the endings enough. However, having said that, all the suspense and rich play leading up to the very end make the game well worth it. I am usually someone who hates games with poor endings, but this one is well worth playing. You'll be able to choose from several different vampire clans, and make choices that will effect whose side you end up on.

The graphics are good, and it's fairly easy to understand how to play. This is one of my favorite games of all time.

Good times

I think one of this game's strongest points is the fact that it can be replayed a few times, and in different ways. I started as a Nosferatu, and as such couldn't talk to anyone. Very different experience than my Tremeere who persuaded people to do all sorts of stuff and blasted people with blood. Who was still very different from playing as a crazy Malkavian who made other people totally insane.
The only problems I experienced (after the game was patched with he 2.3 patch and all) were in diffuculty with figuring out quests, but that's prolly just my idiocy. I highly recommend this game!

Fun, but has some issues

Thankfully, there is a very dedicated community to this game, which include folks who write their own bug fixes. Last I looked (several months ago), the unofficial list was up to about 8 or 9 patches.

That being said, this game did bring some interesting elements to the table. I don't feel I wasted my money - what I felt was wasted was time in looking for bug work-arounds or having to restart due to crashes/corrupted files.

The range of Vampire types is intriguing, but the pre-generated characters were not to my liking. I'd read that apparently they'd scrapped that portion before launch. Skill point allocation had a nice range & was interesting throughout. A disappointment arose in the realisation that had I not concentrated my skills in a particular area, there would've been no way to get beyond that point. For example, say you had to get info out of a computer, but your skills in that area were lacking... Most times there were alternate ways around, but a couple of times not.

In each area there were less and less quests, which was disappointing as well - because despite the bugs, the game IS fun. Trying to figure out where to get your next meal, the quests, dealing w/ the creepy hospital guy - you really wanted the game to keep going, and that is certainly a big factor in my rating :)

At this price....still a maybe!

I'm really not sure if I can recommend this game for most players. I'll give you the facts and let you decide.

Let's start with the bad. This game wasn't finished when it released. It was pretty irresponsible to put out a game in this condition even if you're having corporate trouble. There are several quests I just couldn't finish because of game mechanic problems. One in particular is a quest where the characters get to the end of the dialog tree and just don't leave dialog mode. You are done. Go back to your save. There are other quest related bugs that forced me to re-install the whole game just to continue in the game. This was not a side quest either. It was the main quest! I ended up having to re-install twice just to finish the game. If it weren't for a great online community constantly updating unofficial patches for this game I would never have been able to finish at all. Also, if you are looking for a first-person shooter, skip this game. The gun-fu is pretty week in this one.

Now the good parts. This has all the makings of a fantastic RPG. The NPC characters are dynamic. The vampire clans are all fairly unique and make the game a new experience each time you play. The game world is open and full of things to quest on. Even with all the problems, I found this to be a truly great game experience. It is also a great representation of the first World of Darkness. That may be why I actually finished the game. Plus, from a horror stand point, there are some really good, creepy scenes in this game. If you make it to the ocean-side hotel or the back alley porn studio you will see what I mean.

That reminds me. This game is definitely not for the younger kids. If you want to keep the sex and violence from the kiddies. Skip this game!

So, what was all that about? You really have to decide if this game is worth your time. Even at the low price it may be more aggravation than it's worth. You should lose sanity because of what you see in the game, not because the game doesn't work.

I was so excited when this game was released. First off you have the Half-life 2 engine, which is a great system. This was one of two critisisms I have about the game. Despite using that engine, some of the visuals weren't quite at the same level as Half-life 2. Still gorgeous, but having both, I guess I expected the detail level to be identical.

The gameplay is excellent, and there are many choices throughout each quest, and the world as a whole. There's alot to do in every part of town, and a great level of interaction. I do kind of wish passerby's were given some sort of blow off statements, instead of just totally ignoring you. Still, there's alot of movement on the streets that helps the environments feel more organic.

I did notice a few glitches and bugs, but nothing too terrible. The cutscenes sometimes have glitches, and the worst bug was one where I had to talk to a guy to enter a room. I chose the wrong topic and left, only to find him gone when I returned. I ended up having to reload as there was no way into the office without his presence.

Overall, I'm enthralled with this title. I got it two days after Half-life 2, and I haven't been able to tear myself away from Vampire long enough to go back to it. If you're an RPG fan you will love this title. Besides being engrossing there's a ton of replay as your clan affiliation can present you with a radically different experience.

Ugh. I can appreciate the "Vampire mythos", but this game has a problem with execution. Overall the plot and storyline was ok, but I couldn't tolerate the bugginess. The game just got slower and slower as it moved along, probably some sort of leaking somewhere. IT shouldnt take 3 minutes to load a game,go inside a building, etc. And even with the patches a few of the quests were still bugged and couldnt be completed. I knew this game had minimal/horrible testing at the 4th dialog spelling mistake in the first few hours of play. Horrible.

Interesting game with a good scare factor!

I am not what you call a vampire fan or even know the difference between different secs of vampires but I thought this game sounded interesting so I bought it at half price (I waited awhile from the intital release date to buy it) and began my journey into the darkness of L.A. California.............

What did I think???

It is a game genre that I am not familure with at all. Before buying this I played a lot of FPS and RTS war games even a flight sim here and there but never a horror game and one about vampires to say the least so my review may not mean much to the hard core fans but coming from outside of this game genre I thought it would be interesting to review my initial output fo the game since I am the least bit partial to the genre.

Graphics are very good but not like HL2. I like the way they did the interiors in buildings with such vivid imagination but the outdoors need some work. Lighting was good in certain areas like the Mansion upstairs (Light House strob light was cool) but the game is mostly very dark which looking at the theme it is expected.

Gameplay is where a game makes it or breaks it and as far as I am concerned VMBL made it. A typical RPG in third or first person with a good story line and acting. An example of this is when your doing favors for Treasa at the Asylum and she freaks out on you tryng to kill her other personality (Janus) which you think is her real sister all along until she shoots Janus and nothing happens to her? This was very weird but interesting because I never have seen this type of scene in any game as if they just through it in to surprize you! The combat part of the game needs a lot of work but for what the game claims to be an RPG, this is expected.

Horror is where this game earns the full 4 stars for me. That is why I bought it and why most people buy this type of game for the scare factor if there is one so did I get scared? Yes, I did! Never have I been afraid to play a game (come on I'm 30 years old and grew up watching the Shining) but when you play through the Hunted Mansion level with the lights out, downstairs alone and the sound way up, you will get scared like I did! Trust me! I loved that Hunted Mansion because you did not know what was around every corner and the sounds you would hear there were very errie!

Overall the game is a good scare in some parts but in others a good story and plot to follow along with. I did not finish the game as of yet (I am stuck in downtown L.A. map at the Skyline Hotel level trying to find this women to talk to but can't get any access to the hotel rooms to find her and my hacking points are not up to speed to break into the hotel security system) so I am just giving you a half-way-through the game review but it's the intital impression the game gives that counts when judging it not the ending of it!

My advice, if you like horror genre games and a little scare here and there buy this game! If you want a FPS action game like HL2 look else where please! If you just like a good story line and plot that is a little out-there then this is the game for you! Heck, buy it and see what you think reguardless of what anyone here says in there reviews of the game. You won't regret it, trust me!

Ohh and I almost forgot, you will be afraid!!!!!
