Coded Arms......

With the lack of good FPS on both the PSP and the Nintendo DS, I decided to give Coded Arms a try. What I found in the game was nothing like a good majority of the reviews had talked about. I'll admit, for a FPS, Coded Arms is no Quake nor is it a Half-Life-Unreal or Halo. What it is, however, is a pretty decent FPS with original ideas...good control(once you get used to it)...and unbelievable graphics(it's practically the best looking PSP game I've seen to date). More of a FPS in the DOOM/Serious Sam vein. The story goes a lil something like this..It takes place in an abandoned virtual reality system inside a giant computer network. The VR system was originally created as a combat training simulator in the event of an alien invasion. However, during this program's development, a major flaw was discovered and the project was scrapped. Though abandoned, the program kept evolving within the computer network and eventually turned into a vast and brutal VR world populated with virtual alien invaders, dangerous computer bugs, the VR system's own security bots and huge boss enemies. You take the role of a computer hacker who infiltrates the VR system and fight through five different game worlds with multiple gameplay levels. More than 30 different weapons are available to battle the horde of virtual creatures, including real world weapons such as sniper rifles, machine guns, grenades, and more fantastic armaments such as pulse rifles. The style in which Konami made Coded Arms gives you the feeling that you're actually in a digital world. It wasn't until recently that i found out this game was originally intended to be put on the PS2....but, for a PSP title, Coded Arms rocks.

There were a couple of things, however, that I didn't like about Coded Arms. While it is easily the best looking PSP title to date and the random level generator was cool and all(almost making it a different gameplay experience each time you replay), the levels pretty much started to look alike to me, giving you little variety in exploring in between. Second, there wasn't enough meat to the story to suit my tastes. It was hard to stay motivated, at times, to keep playing(something I've heard alot of reviewers say)...other than to keep going from room to room clearing out enemies & whatnot and keeping moving on to the next level. While both of these elements are essential to making a good FPS, it doesn't take alot away from the game.

Coded Arms is one of those FPS that gives you an intense gameplay experience. Have enough bad guys on the screen after you and you'll definitely feel the heat of battle. That's just the single player experience. The multiplayer aspect is the best part of Coded Arms as it supports up to 4 players over Wi-Fi, with three mutiplayer modes. Overall, this is a great first try on the Playstation Portable. It has alot of potential if Konami decides to make a franchise with this series.

If you're a FPS fanatic, this is really one to get.

Coded Arms Hands Of Review

The first thing you will notice about Coded Arms is the sound. One of the best soundtracks and sound effects I've heard on the PSP. The game is basically about a government combat training simulator that malfunctioned, creating a virtual battlefield swarming with deadly enemies. You as a hacker called the "Coded Ones" find this system and begin to fight these creatures to earn rare items found through out the system called "A.I.D.A."

For about the first thirty minuets, I've probability spent all my time on the controls. There are four different types of controls and as for me, the first type of settings were easier to get use to than the others. Now since there is not a second analog stick on the PSP, I found it easer to move my character around using the analog stick than having it as my aiming. The controls are definitely going to take sometime to get use to than the game play.

The one interesting thing I noticed about playing Coded Arms was the level designs. The levels can range from being really small to extremely large arenas. There's also the fact that there is a random map generator for each level, so if you were to replay the same level, it would appear different every time you play it. Another cool thing about Coded Arms is the way the creatures die. From aliens to robots, when they get "Deleted" a trail of numbers would slowly deteriorate them, almost Matrix like.

Now I've never experienced lagging yet in a PSP game but this would be the first. Yes the game does lag when there are a lot of things happening at once. This can get annoying and make you die faster which untimely ruins the fun. Just remember when you die you have to start from the beginning again, so save often. Loading is not a big deal at all for this game. The longest I had to wait would be thirty seconds. Usually it's around five to ten seconds max.

Multiplayer is extremely fun with friends even though it would be cooler to see an online mode. Up to four players can join one game choosing from Last Man Standing, Deathmatch, Keep The Mark and more gaming modes. The only thing that sucks about this game is the auto lock-on. Luckily enough you can turn this off not to be cheep but I would keep it on for basic story mode campaign.

Besides this being the first FPS game for the PSP, when you insert the game, you will find another UMD icon. This is a version 1.50 system upgrade. So this means you need to upgrade your system before continuing the game. Thoes of you with version 1.00 PSP's, wont be able to play this game unless you want to give up playing emulators on your PSP. I'm guessing this is a new way of forcing people to upgrade there units.

Either than that, I personally loved the game. As I said before, great sound affects, superb music for each level and great graphics for the PSP. I give Coded Arms a 9.0 just because of how much the controls are hard to get use to. Either than that this game is definitely worth buying.

CODED ARMS WOW!!!!!

Coded Arms what to say. This game is GREAT! When I first put this game into my PSP I could tell it was going to be great. The intro movie realy got me excited and then playing the game was even better. The graphics are amazing. When I looked at my PSP I started to wonder how an FPS game could be played on this system. The controls take a little bit to get used to if you're used to playing with 2 anolog sticks (which I am.) But it's not to hard to get used to them. There are so many enemies, guns, upgrades, and other cool stuff that this game just never gets boring. I also like the random levels. Everytime you die and select retry you end up in an entirely different room. This game is great a must buy for any PSP gamer.

Coded Arms makes the most of what it is given by the PSP. Lets just face it, it's really difficult to make a decent FPS without 2 analog sticks. Konami was able to, here's the review:

Graphics: 7/10. The graphics are great. All of the characters, weapons and environments are amazingly drawn. The reason why it gets a 7... color. While the characters are colorful, the entire game environment is really dull. Almost everything is grey or brown.

Gameplay: 9/10. This took me by suprise, its way better than I ever expected. Controling your character is actually quite easy and smooth, once you get used to the odd concept of using the right-side buttons for aiming. The game also helps you aim by moving the reticule to the enemy if you are aiming close to it. This helps close the gap between using an analog stick and buttons to aim. The level generator is great too. I was expecting just random boxes dispersed across a wide open room, but the generator strategically places elevators, doors, ledges, towers, and all kinds of boxes and explosives (everything from a tiny barrel to a giant gas-filled water tower). Even so, the gameplay does get a little repetitive after a while, but the whole concept of getting new weapons, testing them out, and upgrading keeps it entertaining.

Sound: 7/10. Most of the weapons have great sound, good enough for console games. The music, however, is a little annoying. First of all, you know if you are about to have an engagement with an enemy, because an annoying gameboy-like track (always the same one) begins to play.

Overall: 8/10. This is a really good game. Buy it. Most of its flaws are caused by the PSP, I think the developers did a great job. Reviewers like EGM and Playstation Magazine (who both gave this game a 3/10) are being way to hard on this game. They're trying to compare this game to fantastic other shooters, like Halo and Half-life. Coded Arms isn't GREAT, but it is worth your money, and because its on PSP, it is a really good game.

This is a great but very addicting game. Tons of weapons to choose from. The only flaw is that it is an easy game to beat. After you beat the game, there are a ton of other levels and extras. Great shooting game!

Could have been awesome

Coded Arms has many of the ingredients of a great FPS but the meal just wasn't cooked yet. It reminds me of another Konami PS2 launch game, Zone of Enders. While they are two totally different games their position was similar: to be the pioneer of a new genre on a new system. Both have outstanding visuals, controls that took some getting used to and not much more to offer. Like Zone of Enders, Coded Arms isn't a terrible failure, but it isn't exactly fun or memorable either. The controls are easy enough to learn but don't lend themselves to precision (generally required in FPS) which is forgivable. A bigger mistake is the endless "sameness" of the enemies and the levels. A box is a box no matter how you dress it up, so it is pointless to say every gamer will experience this differently as a rationale for the randomly generated level design. The AI is non-existent so every room is more or less a death match between you and the allotted number of enemies. I have this lurching suspicion that there is a trend amongst game developers to make lesser versions of games in the name of portability (see Metal Gear Acid or Metroid Prime Hunters). I mean really, if this came out on the PS2, Xbox or Gamecube no one would give it the time of day. The handhelds available these days are capable of so much more. So you can be desperate and call this "best on the PSP" or "great game" or you can call it what it is.

Konami FPS is solid

First off i'm not an avid FPS fan, i'm more of a classic Doom and wolfenstein gamer. But after having beat Untold Legends, Mercury, and Metal Gear Acid i was ready for something new and different. Coded Arms delivered.

Graphically this game is very impressive for the little sleek PSP handheld. another reviewer said that almost all areas look the same and are drab, this is true, however in the "Ruins" world you jack into, its very colorfull and very stunning visually.
As far as gameplay value it was repetitive in the same way most other psp games are , for example, most people are saying that Untold Legends is just a hack and slash with minimal plot. It's true, however it is sooo fun that the minimal story doesn't hinder the overall fun. The same thing can be said for Coded Arms.

This game is definately worth the money, i was very leary for my first hour or so into it thinking it wasnt, but that's just cause the controls take some getting used to. once you practice for a while it becomes second nature and that is where the real fun comes in.

I'm probably 2/3rd through the game right now, and its pretty tough, but also a lot of fun, especially considering its easily the equivalent of a console game for you to play on the go. You just can't beat that.

I feel that even after the "novelty" of the portable hi-quality graphically intensive game systems wears off, people will still look back on this as a solid release. Definately worth the praise its achieved.

An encouraging first try

First off, I think this is definetly a rental, not a buy. I liked this game. Didn't love it, liked it. Evertones complaints are valid; repetetive, awkward controls, lcak of animation. I rented this knowing the controls would be awkward because its a handhels, but after a while I got good at it. I also rented it to see what a fps on the small screen was like. I was prepared to be dissapointed, but I was very pleased. I was pleased that this, being the first fps on the psp, was a pretty good first try, and as game developers go along, the fps on psp is only going to get better.

well thought out controls for the first PSP FPS

i had my doubts about how the developers were going to setup the controls with only one jowstick, but they managed to do it just fine. it almost makes me with that fireteam bravo does the same thing. you get used to it pretty fast. with the awesome graphics and wide selection of weapons, this is a great game.

Good and Fun, but Repetitive

The basic plot of this game is to blast away anything and everything in sight. If you like this concept, buy the game. However I feel that it lacks certain elements such as a basic story line (which bothers me since there is not a single cut scene in the entire game), and even though it claims that the environments change every time you play, they all seem like big rooms connected by hallways with a few elevators here and there. There are a lot of weapons but several look exactly the same (such as Inferno, Judgement, and Onslaught which all have different attributes, but look like RPG launcher.) Final Verdict: In more ways than one this game is very repetitive, but if you like blowing away through clips of ammo like never before on a hand held, this game is worth every penny.
