Worth a second examination

When Metal Gear Ac!d was first released, it was the subject of scorn from the majority of Metal Gear fans. Excited by the prospect of a Metal Gear game on their new Playstation Portables, fans were dejected to discover that this wasn't really a Metal Gear game at all. In reality it was a spinoff title that didn't even exist within the same continuity. Worst of all, it wasn't even "Tactical Espionage Action"...it wasn't even an action game!

Instead, what Konami delivered us was a strategy/card game. Such games were not new - they had existed in mini-games in other RPG titles and even full-fledged "card" games had been released in the past, though many of these didn't cross the pacific.

Now that Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops has been released though, and given fans what they had been wanting since the PSP was released, this game is worth a second examination. It may have alienated the core Metal Gear fanbase, but for the type of game it is - it is VERY GOOD at what it does. The plot is interesting and the script well written. There may not be much voice acting in the game, but at least I feel like I can hear David Hayter's voice when Solid Snake is speaking. The advantage this offers is that as a gamer you need NO KNOWLEDGE of any previous title in the Metal Gear franchise. So if Metal Gear's stealth gameplay doesn't appeal to you, that doesn't mean this game needs to be ruled out. It is a very good strategy game and the card system produces an element of chance that causes any given stage to play out a little differently each time.

Perhaps you'll get lucky and acquire potent cards early, perhaps you'll instead have to rely on more mundane cards. The card game is, itself, simple while still having a variety of different cards that produce interesting effects. Also notable are the character cards - these cards usually depict someone from the series such as Grey Fox or Olga Gurlukovich. When you play their card, you get to see a short rendered clip of that character from their source game. Very cool.

If you're looking for a traditional Metal Gear game, then this is definitely one to avoid - check out Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops instead. However, if you have a taste for strategy games - regardless of whether or not you love or hate Metal Gear then this game is worth checking out.

I'd stay away from this one

OK, I played Metal Gear YEARS ago when it first came out on Nintendo. i played a few times with newer games, but I have not been a big game player since my early teen years. Now, at 27, I thought this system looked great, so I bought it and Metal Gear at the same time, since I thought it would be like the older ones from years ago. Boy was I wrong. I like a game you can just start and go, but this is not that kind of game. This has a card system that you have to use to move and do everything with. Too confusing for an old school gamer like me!

BORING AND LOUSY

This game isn't worth your money. I had bought it instead of NFS thinking that MGA would be better. IT IS NOT. THe story was interesting but the rest of the game sucked.
1. it is hard to get used to teh gameplay.
2. you have to know "strategies" or it gets pointless.
3. Either that there was not objectives but kill at get to a point OR i couldn't find the objectives.
4. the graphic sucks. I basically bought psp for its graphics. The game looks like it uses GBA graphics.

I didnot have any fun with this game. I played it for about seven hours and just gave up on it.

Read more customer reviews or rent it before buying this game

see people, this game isnt sopposed to be a sequal or a continuation of SOLID games. it is only THEMED MGS, and can be played if just about any game were applied. take GTA. replace FAMAS with AK-47, USP with Colt .45, and Rations with 'ice cream', if you know what i mean. most people would shudder at that fact, but face it; its a game of chess here, i tense up as much as i do here as i did in MGS 1 and 2. The twists and turns of the plot are tremendus, and that, sir, is enough to play it.

warning cheap immatation

When I got this game I couldnt wait to play it.This game is probably the worst one in the series. The 1st problem was that they talk for about ten minutes before you get to start. The 2nd problem is that the set up is completly different and they make you play it like a card game, and you also have a limited number of moves until the enemy moves. You don't even get to shoot. So if you like the previous games DO NOT BUY THIS GAME

I'd rather have flushed the money down the toilet

Just bought this game an hour ago....this game sucks. Entrusting in the Metal Gear franchise I decided that this would be a good action game for my new portable system. WRONG! Its a card game...I wanted Metal Gear not You-gee-o! This game is so cheaply made. This game does not at all take advantage of the PSP's graphical power. The cut scenes are nothing but pictures and text. No voices, no animation. The gameplay is boring and not at all intriging. Now I cant bring it back cause its software. I got ripped off....my only hope is if the company has a recall on such a horrible game...thanks Konami.

Its More for Feel than Just Simplicity

It seems like, in general, the opinions on ACID are mixed. However, reviews making comparisons to other childish card games or making references to monky "butt" (its ok, we're not all 1st graders like you, we can say butt) are unwarrented. However, obviously, this is just my personal opinion.

This was one of the first games I picked up with my PSP, and in fact was the first one I played (I bought Twisted Metal: Head On as well). Now, obviously, this isn't Metal Gear, and its that simple- which is a fact that one would do well to keep in mind going into the game. I went into the game with an open mind, and realizing that this wasn't going to be MGS like I was used to, but it turned out to not be bad.

ACID moves away from straight action that some may play its predecessors for, and instead focuses on tactical finess and strategy, requiring a thought out approach to tackling objectives. Now this may obviously turn off many fans in the MG series, so I would not recommend buying the game if this sounds unappealing. There will be another MG game, or at this point Snake Eater, so go for those. However, for those people more interested in trying a straight-out form of MG in more of a numbers-game form, then I recommend ACID.

Thumbs Down!

This is the worst game I have ever played. In order to move you can only go so much and also you need to select "move". And when you shoot an enemy it only hits him a few times but the bad part is you can't aaim. You just choose a direction and fire, it's worse than that. I sold this game back to Gamestop on like the first day because it was so bad. DO NOT GET THIS GAME. THIS IS YOUR FINAL WARNING!!

For all you PSP owners that are MGS fans a game called Metal Gear SOLID PSP is coming out-i don`t know any details about the story, characters or if it is a sequal or prequal to the MGS series-I do know that it is not a Card Strategy game like Metal Gear AC!D.It would be interesting what story it uses like who do you play-Solid Snake,Jack(Raiden) or possibly Big Boss-or is it a remake of a previous MGS title-Or is gonna be a side Story like MG-AC!D(Mst likely you play Solid Snake).
I do not have a PSP-But i will be reading reviews, previews and forums. At the momet i own Metal Gear Solid:The Twin Snakes,Metal Gear Solid 2:Sons Of Liberty,And Metal Gear Solid 3:Snake Eater(MGS3 Best,MGS:TTS 2nd,and Sons Of Liberty third)

bye

First i want to acknowledge that i don't believe in the existence of a "best game ever" or a "worst game ever". Every game has it target audience who will appreciate it.
I am very much into strategy games and FPS. This game is slow, because of the cards system, so it lost it appeal to be a FPS and because of the turns system it lost its appeal to be a good strategy game.
The graphics are based on cartoons with pokiemon style characters and poor 3D rendering.
I never played a metal gear game before on any consol so i have nothing to bench mark to. But a purpose of any game is to entertain me first then educate me with something i didn't know before. This game failed to provide me with anything. I personally regret buying it.
i think the audience who will like it are 19 years old males who
have plenty of patience and stamina to learn how to play it and evolve with the story. Don't expect much though.
