The ups and some few downs of the game

Dark age of camelot is my favorite game, though it will be topped by(I dont think I may say it). I will go throught the pros and cons of the game.
The graphics of the game is finely made and the character animation is extremely detailed, as you even can dye your clothes and armor with simple dyes like green, blue, red and orange, and finer dyes like black, teal and purple.
Another prospect is that you can tell monster difficulty. That was missing in some games.
The monster AI is quite simple, but also very good(meaning that it is understandable, but still complicates the game). The monsters can call for help and follow each other around. The AI means that various tactics will be in use and that you will need to group with other people more often.
Although the roleplaying has not gone through yet, it is still very possible to make friends, and you have a friends list too. There are very strict rules concerning cheat and violation of rules. Players that hack will get their account shut down as fast as possible.
There is more or less dangerous places to adventure in, and there is dungeons filled with dangerous monsters.
Some people may find it a little hard to understand the game, since there is very few menus and a whole lot of chatting, since many players will interact with each other. Almost all functions are slash ( / ) based, for example, when you want to quit, you have to type /quit. If you are fairly experienced with multiplayer you may not find it a problem, but newer players (to multiplay) will find the game quite confusing.
In my opinion, Dark Age of Camelot is the best game in rpg and mmorpg ever, basically.
Well, now my review ends. I hope it may have enlightened some. If not, you are free to contact me (in-game) and ask any questions concering anything.

Ok, I have never played Everquest. Up until recently I hadn't even played shooters online. So a friend that was into EQ started talking about DAoC at lunch one day. He started explaining character creation, skill point allocations, weapon attack styles and so on. What was really neat is that a bunch of us that knew each other could play together. So I start a Ranger. I get to about lvl 12 with it before I realize that I had put the initial points in the wrong area and I'd be seriously crippled in later levels. Ok, lvl 12, no biggie. I start a new ranger with the correct allocations. I'm playing him up to lvl 14 and then arrows that do any significant damage are outrageously priced and I can only carry about 300 before I start moving slowly due to weight to strength issues. Keep in mind I'm using about 10 arrows a monster in groups and 3 when soloing.

I get bored and broke quickly so I start a mentalist. Spells replace a bow and unlimited pretty lights replace arrows. The mentalist is at lvl 23 and even though I appreciate the character I'm really losing interest in the game. It takes about 3 hours to get one level in a power group that knows what it is doing. (I hear that once you hit 30 it gets much, much slower). Maybe I'm just impatient but that is too slow for me. I've learned how to use my spells and abilities way before the next level is awarded to me.

I've watched some Player vs Player on a few different machines 1ghz+, one with a Geforce 3 another with a Geforce 2 and let me tell you that when spells start going off the frame rate drops to almost nothing. It is pathetic. This is what I'm striving to get my levels for? Choppy gameplay that would drive me insane.

The music is great for a while then I turn it off because it gets repetitive and annoying. The creature sounds are poorly done. Fight some of the tree creatures for a perfect example. I'm envisioning one of the marketing guys being pulled in at the last minute to help finish the game to scream "aarrr--grrrrr" into a microphone. The terrain isn't as bad as some people say.

I'll say that I had the most fun up to lvl 14 or 15 then it just became work instead of play. The realm I'm playing in is called Hibernia which is supposed to be the "magical realm". Yet I play other realms and they have better spells. Is it just me or should the other realms not have spells at all? They have awesome fighters that outmatch anything Hibernia has and they have stun spells that can cast repeatedly without any loss of effectiveness. Stuns can't be removed before their time is up. Oh, yea, it's area effect too...a wide area. So if your group gets hit by one of these then say goodnight. So, it looks like I was playing in the wrong realm from my comments but, this is 1/3 of the game. Balance? None.

Another gripe I have is that due to the large amount of cheating the designers have over compensated by killing your character if your machine locks in the middle of a battle no matter how easy the monster is you're fighting. If you happen to be moving at the time this happens the server still thinks you're moving and your character runs into a field full of aggressive monsters they will all be pulled and attack the poor members of your group killing them all off while your machine is rebooting. They assume you are attempting to cheat all of the time and you can't be trusted. Some people do this I know but makes it frustrating for the rest. Also, if your friends get a little ahead of you forget about grouping with them. They removed gaining experience points with people more than a few levels higher than you because they assume...yep, you're cheating.

This game is fun for a while but I think I'll wait 5 or 6 years before I try another MMORPG. The technology and planning just isn't there yet. I'm playing over a cable modem and the speed is the same as when I was playing over 56k. I'm not upset at Mythic, just unimpressed. I get the feeling of playing a text adventure with graphics they may or may not reflect what is actually going on.

The one time I had to use online tech support they were very friendly, helpful, and professional.

Just so-so..beware the hype of beta testers..

As time moves along, more and more computer gaming companies are jumping on the MMORPG bandwagon. Some cling tenaciously, despite a plethora of problems including laggy gameplay, missing features, and bad customer service. One of the newest of the 'next generation' MMORPGs is Dark Age of Camelot by Mythic Entertainment.

While this is admittedly a stable and fairly well-performing game, compared to recent buggy releases in the same genre (AO, WW2 Online), it's mostly a humdrum experience, and feels not unlike wading in a shallow pool on a hot day, it just doesn't really do the trick. The reason for this overall malaise in gameplay stems from the lack of overall gameplay depth and player character options. The lack of a variety of character classes really weakens DaoC's long-term playability and versatility. It's hard to really feel unique, as a PC (player character) within the game world since you're not given many class options. Similarly, while the three different races/realms ARE definitely distinct in both feel and culture, these difference add little more to the overall gameplay, other than providing the player with a focus for enmity when the PvP and PvE battles begin.

The 'relic wars', as some are calling them, will be the strong aspect of DaoC. However, even this aspect of the game doesn't add that much to the gameplay. Admittedly, this unique idea does add SOMETHING different to the standard mix of Online gaming's usual fare, but it's just not enough to really distinguish DaoC from the rest of the current pack, stability notwithstanding, and it certainly won't prevent DaoC from being blown away when the heavy-hitters arrive on the scene. Games like Planetside (the Online FPS from Verant, makers of EverQuest), Earth and Beyond (Deep space combat Online RPG from Westwood), and finally, Star Wars: Galaxies (again by Verant) will all showcase unique gameplay and enough interesting differences to make the release of DaoC a (sadly) moot point in the long run.

For a game to really stand out, in the competitive genre of MMORPGs, it will need more than just a simple twist on group-based gaming, it will need a copious amount of depth, tons of in-game options, solid gameplay, and a relatively bug-free experience. Dark Age of Camelot provides some of this but without much pizazz, so consider that before spending your hard earned cash on what is, at heart, just another derivative fantasy-based MMORPG.

Doac The best game -Still -after playing for a year

This is the best game we have played. My husband and I play as a team and also solo. We have a Midgard guild and we just can,t stay away from it. Mystic is always improving the game , and trying to improve the characters. We have gotten our money out of this game 100 times over.We have people from all over the world in our guild which is great and gives us a great variety of friends .
I don,t really think we need to look any further for adventure . DOAC has plenty of it

8 months later and I'm still wowed!

This has to be the richest, lushest online game I've yet to play. The choice of characters is at least twice as varied as what Everquest offers. Levelling is easier than Everquest also. I've also found that it's easier to meet and group with players in DAoC than EQ, none of those snotty cliques I constantly found on EQ. After experiencing the aloof nature of EQ and the disappointment of Anarchy online, DAoC is a breath of fresh air. Those reviewers who say the game is not finished are forgetting that alll online games are works in progress. DAoC was definitely ready for gold release in comparison to Anarchy Online. In summary, I have no regrets in buying this game and am sure I'll be playing it for years to come.

Awesome game for the casual gamer

Unlike Ever Quest, you definitely can play this game for about 30 minutes and actually get something accomplished. In EQ I was actually flamed one time for only grouping with someone for only an hour, but with this game even though my character is 46 I can log on for an hour here or an hour there and actually be a part of a group that doesn't get pissed when I decide to log for the night. I don't think this game is as much of a challange as EQ, which is why I say it's for the casual gamer. For those who are not so casual I think that it has the potential for becoming boring after a while. I don't think there's enough things that you can do beyond lvl 50 to keep someone interested. Sure, there's one dragon you can kill, and then there's Legion raids, but not much else to do besides rvr which can get boring at times. Sure you had to commit a lot of time to raids in EQ, but at least there were lots places that you could do raids if you so desired. I've played this game since the day it came out and I'm starting to lose interest. I feel like I've done everything there is to do and I'm not even lvl 50 yet.

Good Bye EQ, Camelot is here to take your place

Hmmmm lets see; Questing to gain half a level each level, Trade system that works, not geared to power gamers but to people who want to have fun with there friends, Not geared to umber guilds, and did I say quest that work that have sweet stories that everyone can do every level.
Customer Support that works, they are honest and they admit there mistakes. If they have made a mistake they admit it and tell you how they are going to fix it. They don't blame you or tell you that this is just a game. What a change.

I ahve just played this game over at a friends house two days ago and let me tell you, it is WONDERFUL! The graphics are great and there is plenty of action. There is also stragety and you can team up with other players to take the down the most difficult of enimies. U can choose 4 races, a male or female, and you can choose 4 ways of battle. The way or Arms, Stealth, Magic and Nature. Each one gives you different ablities. You have many choices of hair color and style, how tall or short. THIS GAME IS DEFENTLY WORTH THE SMALL FEE OF ONLY $10.00 A MONTH!

Very addictive game, I have no complaints except for the giant leveling gaps. I got to level 39 and its getting hard to get my character up to 50. Since I started playing this game, my eyesight has been diminishing RAPIDLY. This is not a lie or a joke. If you don't know what addiction is, you will now. I have lost hours of sleep and even play this game at work. This game can easily fill a boring weekend. Playing for 5 hours straight in one sitting is not uncommon. Word of Advice: REST your EYES every hour for 15 minutes playing this game, and get another account for the girlfriend/wife or you will be hawked continually about not giving her time (unless you wanna lose a real life relationship for a computer)

Remember when Massive Multi-Player Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) were the wave of the future and when possibilities are endless and fun. Well, I am still waiting for the endless possibilities and the fun. Dark Age and all MMORPGs make you feel like a gerbal, in that, you feel like you are running in place on that stationary wheel. The major problem with Dark Age is that you "work" by killing rats, snakes, ect. to get to the next levels so that you can kill bigger rats, bigger snakes, etc. The enemies stay the same except in name and colors. You literally kill lame animals for weeks just to supposedly move up on levels. The game developers give you the illusion that you are advancing a level after you have killed about one hundred snakes so that you can kill another hundred snakes that are "tougher." Do you get the point? Don't get me wrong, there are people out there who like to do this stuff, although I wonder how they equate doing the same thing over and over again being fun. Dark Age is probably the best of the MMORPGs but then again being the best of a boring, broken lot isn't what you strive for. MMORPGs is popular now but you have to wonder how long can these types of games keep gamers mesmerize and dellusional? Save your money! These types of games are not worth it.
