Mythics Dedication

Mythic really has a gem of a game going here. Their plan to continue full company devotion to this game is whats really got me excited. The only bad reveiws of this game ive ever seen were about lack of content. This is, of course, true when this game is being compaired to other huge mmorpgs as the like of EQ, yet look at how long eq has been out, and how many updates and patches they've had! Verant truly has a great game with EQ, but not their entier team is working on it, just a small portion. Now, look at Camelots future, with the continued development, i can see this game going places Verant never dreamed of!

You can bet I'll be picking up a copy of this game!

A well-thought out game with a very responsive company

First of all, be careful of the reviews you hear about how a game of this sort is "unfinished." I am yet to see ANY games of this sort to be "finished." It is true there were many aspects to the game were yet to be implemented at release, but the company has diligently worked to implement items into the game in an orderly fashion (though timely is matter of perspective.)

Also be careful of reviews that say that Mythic is in the job of nerfing. They spend a significant amount of time trying to balance the game. If there is an "uber" template, that template won't last very long. (Unlike Asheron's Call where EVERYONE is a magic-user.) With each new addition, skill change, class change, monster change, equipment change, (which happen rougly every two to three weeks) it is difficult to predict in which direction the game balance will turn. They gauge the balance through the success rate of the various professions and customer feedback. After some study, they make a change... It may be true that at some point in the game a certain class or realm has an advantage, but by analyzing data and customer feedback, that advantage may be short-lived or possibly long-lived, depending on the extant of the imbalance, but rest assured, it's not permanent.

Also, this game is incredibly dependent on the intelligence of the user. I recall a time when Albions (a human realm) outnumbered Midgards (dwarf, trolls, kobolds) in a realm vs. realm battle, about 16 players to 8 players. We (Albions) had been regularly trouncing them just through sheer numbers. The Midgards stil came back for more and more. Unfortunately for the Albions, we were getting rather over-confident and the Midgards came from a direction where we were not looking and using their party of 8, wiped out a party of 16 (technically two parties of 8). My hats off to the Midgards for using their brains and taking advantage of our overconfidence.

Be very careful this can be a Nightmare!

Be very careful when purchasing this game. The process of instllation so that you can get to the game can and was a nightmare! CAUTION! This game does not support Voodoo Cards. If you have one you'll have to purchase another. And after installation...still no guarantee that the game will work..for me it didn't.
The customer service calls have continued for over one week and nothing has been accomplished except to cause several operating problems with my system by following their suggestions.. The people are very nice and most cooperative, but they have a very...and I mean very limited knowledge of the problems showing up with this game.
Simply put...It is the opinion of this writer that Dark Age of Camelot has a very narrow acceptance parameter for some machines. Yours could be one which like mine...won't run the game. The supprising part is that there is nothing special about my machine...it is very vanilla and doesn't seem to have any other problems connecting to anything else on the internet.

IN SHORT BEWARE BUYER! This game may be called Return to Store after many frustrating hours of never connecting with the game.

Leaving the others behind!

Despite some technical hangups for some (my self included, for a time), the world that Mythic has created with DAoC is quite impressive. For a MMORPG in its infancy, it's absolutely incredible what can be done and how addictively fun it is! The part of the game that grabs me the most is, without a doubt, the Realm vs. Realm (RvR) combat system. Where other games concentrate heavily on one on one combat and have SERIOUS code holes, showing that PvP was an afterthought at best, DAoC has created a fine system of player combat that REQUIRES large-scale invasion and defense. The use of tactics is a MUST, as charging enemy lines in ones and twos results in a quick and messy death. The twinking problems which show up in other games are virtually nonexistent in DAoC, and the cameraderie between Realm-mates is FAR greater than in other MMORPGs, resulting in a FAR more enjoyable experience! HIGHLY recommended!

This game is an 100% improvement over anything currently in the market to date. And like it's predecessors DAoC will also eventually fall to the Next Generation MMORPG, but until then do not contemplate, aquire DAoC and play! As we speak the game is being updated, patched and improved. However you intend to interact in DAoC, RvR (Realm vs. Realm) is the centralized theme.

this is a great MMORPG for everyone for the PvM (player vs monster) people out there the monsters are great and always fun to kill to gain some money now for you PvPers (play vs player) people out there I haven't found a better game if you want to go it solo you can easily do that with any class in the game of course some classes are better than others in solo and with stealth this is espeachly true Stealth is a skill that allows u to run at a bit slow pace but unseen to other players untill u are hiting them. For players who prefer the more normal method u can always be a tank and bash people over the head with ur sword mace sheild ect, for the magic usesers out there you can be anything from a top quality nuker to a person who attacks with a pet this game is well worth the money the support is great they are always updating it and adding new things and the camelotherald.com website is sweet to keep track of how you and your guild mates and other friends stack up against others in PvP

Good game, but not perfect

If you are looking for a game that will keep you interested over a long period of time, this could be it. However, if you are easily annoyed by minor problems, or are looking for a wide-open RPG, this game isn't it--at least, not yet. You may want to wait a few months until the game has had a chance to mature. And if you are looking for a first person shooter, this game isn't it and, I hope, won't ever evolve into one.

This is an online only game and requires that you pay an ongoing fee (about $12 a month) to play it. For this reason, the game doesn't have an "ending." You are supposed to just keep playing it indefinitely.

The danger here is that the developers of the game will find ways to waste your time, frustrate your ambitions, etc., in order to keep you playing. Some of that does happen in DaoC. For example, the fastest way to get from one spot to another in the game is on a horse. But when you purchase a ride on a horse, you don't immediately show up at your destination. You do literally have to ride on the horse (with nothing to do) for 5 or 10 minutes. Of course, if you decide to walk instead, it will take 5 times as long....

The game also hasn't quite decided what it is. It isn't a shooter, as PvP is one of the last things available. But it isn't a role playing game either. Some aspects of RPG are there, but some have been intentionally disabled. E.g., you can be a trader or a craftsperson, making your living outside the combat arena. But you can't really be a hunter or fur trapper, as creatures stop dropping loot once they are no longer strong enough to represent a threat to you.

Some problems may be corrected over time, such as the lack of an automap or minimap. There are a number of such gaps/problems. E.g., if you want to perform tasks/quests to gain experience, you will need to hunt around for someone to give you a task. Most of the time, the answer is "come back later." I've spent hours looking for someone who could hand me a task. If you need directions on how to find an NPC, in order to complete a quest, you must ask a guard. If you ask a sentry, or any other NPC, they won't know. Only a guard knows that?! And when you get a task, be sure to write down the location you're heading to. The auto-notes feature doesn't retain this information.

The documentation is weak, and as yet there isn't much on the internet to fill the gaps. E.g., my character has lost Quickness points, but no one I've met, no site I've visited has any idea how to get those restored. The simple answer "visit a healer" doesn't work. Apparently a specialist is required?

In summary, I have a low tolerance for things that waste my time or annoy me. So far, I am still playing DaoC, which says a lot for the underlying gameplay and--to some extent--the potential the game has to evolve into something great. Because I do notice that my time gets wasted and that certain things annoy me when I play.

Still just leveling treadmill

I played AC extensively. I played DAoC for about 2 months. In the end--bordom took over. this is just another leveling treadmill that will consume a large amount of time but leave you empty and bored. great graphics. good support staff. good servers.

This is the greatest game ever

DAoC is a mystical game with a lot of places to go and things to do. There r three diffrent realms each with diffrent classes and races. The graphics are incredibul. There is the leveling sistum where u gain lvls by killing monsters. When u get to 5 u get to chose your afficial class. When u get to be 30-50 u get to do relm vs realm battles. (u can do realm vs realm battles be low that but u would die and not do else except see diffrent races of diffrent realms). Now there is a dueling system where u can invite an other player to duel u. If u r looking for an ultimate online role playing game the 1 to get is DAoc (in this i use a lot of DAoC writing short-cuts =) Have fun)

DAoC vs. EQ

I played Everquest from its infancy to the present (Just before Planes of Power) and I have all the expansions that are associated with it. I loved the game except for a few of the following items: 1) Too many folks per server, 2) The "jerk" factor.(too many unfriendly folks), 3) over camping of items and bickering for hunting spots, 4)zone lines and zoning crashes to desktop. And these are just a few.

Now don't get me wrong, EQ is a good game....and then I played Dark Ages of Camelot. NO zone lines (except dungeons and home cities), folks are VERY nice and helpful, graphics are very smooth and non-cartoonish, NO CAMPING...woohoo, no bickering and complaining about hunting spots and game flow is smooth and exciting. I would recommend this game to anyone wanting a real enjoyable gaming experience.
