Good game for L&O fans

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 6 / 6

The only problem I have had with this game is the fact that I am apparently too dimwitted to solve the case in time!! It's been challenging, but that's okay with me.
As for the performance of the game itself? I am running Windows XP,on a 1.8 P4,w/256 RAM. The game installed quickly, and has run flawlessly.
So..if you don't have hardware problems, and are a fan of L&O,and love to figure out "who done its,"this is the game for you.

a blast!

This game is beyond horrible

For starters, there is only one case. Once you solve that, you are done and can sell it at a yard sale. This kinda irks me. Once you've written the interface, how hard is it to make a few more story lines?

The interface is a pain to use. I bought the game for my mother, an avid Law & Order fan and she had a time with it. All of the scenes in the game are basically panoramic images that I can only assume are rendered in Quicktime. After reading one of the other reviews here, I visited the website and played the online demo. For the life of me, I can't imagine why they didn't use that interface in the real game - it is much easier to use.

The time constraints bother me quite a bit. At the beginning of the game, you are allowed to choose two of four qualities to help you. One of them is "efficiency" - that you won't take as much time doing things. Well, under normal time constraints, if you do EXACTLY the right steps, wasting no time whatsoever, you barely finish in time. If you select "efficiency", then time moves so slowly that you basically have to sit there and mark time waiting for something to happen. There needs to be a middle ground here.

One of the things that gets me to no end is that a lot of the evidence you collect at the crime scene really blends in with the dirt. There was one critical piece of evidence of evidence that my mother and I spent a half an hour looking for. Another one of the helpers you can choose is "evidence collection", where your cursor will be changed into a magnifying glass whenever you hover over a piece of evidence. This is almost essential.

Also, one word of caution: save frequently. If you go out on a tangent that turns out to be wrong, you will need to load your saved game to get your wasted time back. Also, I've had it lock up a couple of times for no good reason.

Another word of caution: the box says that it needs 96 megs of RAM. Well, one of the times that it locked up, I saw that it was using well over 200 megs. This didn't particularly bother me because my mother's machine has a gig in it, but I would have to think that with under 256 megs, it would be constantly reading from the hard drive.

A third word of caution: they suggest installing the Java runtime environment. I ran the game on Windows 2000 just fine without it. The help says that you only need to install Java if you have XP so I'd be inclined to leave well enough alone and not install it unless you need to.

A fourth word of caution: I'd suggest finding someone who has this game and taking a look at it before buying it.

This game is a nice change of pace for someone who is used to blowing stuff up in computer games. It is well-produced, well thought out and generally a pleasure to play. I almost never do this, but I've gone out and bought copies as gifts. I highly recommend it.

Great game for fans of the show as well as someone who's never seen it. The different stages of the game allow you to play different parts in a crime investigation. Search for evidence, question witnesses, and try to get an arrest warrant before your time runs out. Then play as the DA, and again try to beat the clock and the defense to get a conviction. Lots of problem solving fun.

I like the show, but I'm not a hard core fan, but I got the game any way. I was surprised that it's real fun. I like asking people questions and looking for things to pick up. Some of it is kind of hard, but it's fun to be a like a part of the tv show.

I've played alot of games, and I just had to say that I think that the customer support on this game is very good. I had problems installing it, went to the Legacy Interactive website and got help with my problems right away, had to update some drivers. The game is really fun, but challenging, so I've been back to the website multiple times for hints. So far I've spent about 20 hours as Lenny Briscoe's partner, am now starting the trial portion. Overall, I've had a very good experience with the game.

I am a huge fan of Law and Order and could not wait for this game to be released. Unfortunately, this game has so many bugs, I could not bear to finish it. Between the constant lock ups and waiting forever and a day for the lab to process my evidence, the game is just plain boring. If you want an interesting, solid detective game (with more than one case), I would highly recommend CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (even though I think Law and Order as a television show is much better).

I've never revised a review before, but I felt I had to this time. First off, do not think that the requirement listed on the package are all that's required for an enjoyable gaming experience here. If you do not have one of the newer video cards, don't even bother. Based on the requirements listed on the box, I should have been able to play this game without a problem. But after dealing with a spinning screen, a game that paused for long stretches of time, and even a screen that went white, I called tech support only to find out (after buying the game) that I needed a newer video card if I really wanted to play. Even after downloading and installing a few drivers provided by Legacy Interactive, I couldn't get it to run as it was supposed to.

Then there is the trial section. At least during the investigative half, you can pause the game or walk away from it for a while, and you have plenty of opportunities to save your game. Save BEFORE you go to trial, and if you think you're going to be distracted DON'T go to trial. Save your game, go live your life and come back to it later. Because once you're in trial phase, you can't save or quit the game until that phase of the trial is over. And again, if you don't have a newer video card, you'll be frustrated when you do get to trial because the 3D animation be jerky and will skip to such a degree that you will inevitably miss some of the testimony of the defense witnesses and some of the defense attorney's questions. (And you can't object to what you don't hear. Not effectively anyway.)

I played through to the end of the trial phase, and all the way to the verdict just once, because I wanted finish at least one game. And I then uninstalled the game and got rid of it. If I want the "Law and Order experience" I'll catch the show itself on television.
