This REALLY is the Game of the Year

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 4

Before I tell you about the game Max Payne, let me tell you about myself. I have EVERY system ever made, from Colecovision to PS2. I have played TONS and TONS of games, including almost every new hit PC and PS2 game on the market today. If it's out, I probably own it. That being said...

Max Payne is TRULY the best game of the year. The storyline is captivating to say the least. Your an undercover NYPD cop working the streets of New York City. A couple junkies break into your house and kill your wife and son. The graphics and sound are movie like, and as convincing as anything you've ever seen in a video game. The story is what makes this game great.

The game play is also amazing. There are tons of weapons that you obtain throughout the game. The slow motion "bullet time" effect is something out of the future. The enemys are FAR from easy to handle. This is not a run and shoot game. It takes time. You can quick save (atleast in the PC version) at any time during the mission. They allow this because of how challenging the game can be at times. You'll explore hotels, old prostitution houses, and office buildings looking for the root of the evil that caused these junkies to kill your family.

This is a game you will get involved with. You learn a little more of the story every time you beat a mission. It's like watching a mystery movie, except this time your the star. This is the type of game you won't kick yourself for buying. It's what I like to call a "no risk" purchase. It's going to keep your attention ATLEAST long enough to be worth the money. It takes a while to beat, unlike alot of these 4-5 hour long mission type games. It's a long story. If your looking for a game to get into, grab Max Payne. You will be VERY happy you did.

P.S. Looking for another AMAZING game? Try Ghost Recon for the PC. It's my 2nd Favorite of the year.

Payne Is A Pleasure

I've had this game since it first came out and I have
over a hundred video games. Some I've sold because
they suck (specifically, No One Lives Forever) and some
I've held on to for their replay value. This game is
a keeper!

I enjoyed the story line, the controls were good, and I
loved the maturity level, i.e, language and violence of
the game. I never tire of painting the walls with my
enemy's blood. The points at which your game were saved
were decent.

The load times could've been sped up (yawn). The
nightmare levels in which you're running around in slow
motion through dark hallways were stupid and just weren't
fun to play, so....I skipped them.

This game is unlike no other and I would be surprised
if Max didn't return for a sequel on the PS2. Definitely
buy this game! This Payne will bring you more pleasure
than most relationships.

If you have PS2 or aer planning on getting it, this is the game you should buy, It's not one of those games that you can beet in one night. It's kinda like the Matrix. It's one of the best games that have ever been created.

One sweet game

I've been playing video games now for about ten years. Nothing except Grand theft Auto 3 comes close to Max Payne. The bullet time is amazing, and the comic strip like cinemas are cool. This is reason enough to buy a PS2.

Best Game on the PS2

I am just about finished solving Max Payne and I have to tell you it is an outstanding game. It has a great story but even better great action. It is like a Die Hard movie. At times you have a choice of 10 weapons. This game really makes your think!! Remember to save your painkillers!!!! Rockstar Games you ROCK!!!

The Next-Gen Shooter Has Arrived

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

Max Payne has set a new standard for shooters. Bringing in a whole new technique of gameplay to the scene, it lets you play as though its your favorite action movie, fully loaded with blazing firearms, slow motion shoot-outs, and a powerful plot. If action is your calling, Max Payne will, without a doubt, please.
On a cold, cold New York night, Max is unexpectedly slapped into a situation where, not even half way through the game, has him as N.Y.'s most wanted by the cops and the mob. As you'd assume, having a peaceful discussion with the two groups won't quite cut it, so he'll have to blast his way through to clear his name, while at the same time finding out all the dirty secrets behind the slaying of his family. Well placed cut-scenes give you a nice breaks from all the action, as the plot reveals more and more twists as you near the conclusion.
While the gameplay is just simply "get from point A to point B while shooting everyone you see" type thing, Max Payne has something that other shooter games don't; Bullet Time. This unique feature allows you to slow down time while being able to aim at "real" time. So basically, while everything around you is going at slo-mo, you can still point your weapons as though it were moving at regular speed. Not only does this give you the upper hand against the truck load of enemies you'll face, but it also makes for some awesome action sequences. Once you master this, the games fun factor blows sky high. Unfortunately, odd controller configurations will challenge your patience as you try to reach this status, and may make the game, at first, seem dull.
Another flaw in this game is its replay value. Story Mode has only one ending, and besides increased difficulty options and a "race against the clock" type game, there's not much else to look for. Fortunatley though, Max Payne's incredible gameplay and great plot make for one heck of a gaming experience. Its sure to deliver.
(I would of given it a 4.5, but I can't)

Only OK

People who were expecting another GTA 3 were way off. I was not but I was expecting a game that was better.

After a while, the game play with the "Bullet Time" gets really cheesy and repetative.

The game is only average and is worth a rent at Blockbuster to at least try it.

Good graphics and storyline, but:

...the controls! Please! This would've been a very, very good game, if it wasn't for the [bad] controls...I'm sorry, I like the game, but the controls make the game (for me) virtually unplayable.

A classic in action gaming...

This incredible game is one of the best in the action genre, setting a new standard in action gaming. The characters are complex, the violence dark, and the story involved and constantly engaging. You are Max Payne, fugitive cop out to bring down the baddies of the big city. Now, you've launched a one-man war after you lose everything you know and love. The graphics in this game are pretty good, but it is the story that keeps this game constantly interesting and fun to play for hours on end. It takes a while to get used to the controls, but once you can handle it, the fun never stops!
