Geo-mod helping to change first person shooters

I ordered this game just by reading the review written by its makers, and I was delighted when it arrived. You start out in a mine, and a revolt is begining, and you have to fight for the cause. The geo-mod makes the game very interesting, because you can blow holes in most walls, need a key, why not make a new door. You can blow up pillars, walls, and everything in between. Anyway, I recieved this game, and i couldnt put it down, I spent 4 hours straight, and the game is still going, and i am still very interested. All I can say is if you want somthing new, this is it.

Can you say "play the game before you review it"?

What we have here is someone giving the game two stars when they haven't even played it. I have. Yes, it's true: you cannot destroy EVERYTHING in the game (wasn't this already a "given" in the information available before the release?), because if you could, there wouldn't be much of a game, would there? The sense of achievement disappears when every problem can be solved by blasting a new tunnel around, underneath, or through an obstacle. Given that a base on Mars or any other planet would have to be resistant to earthquakes, meteorites, and such, one would surmise that some parts of the base simply might be a little more resistant to a rocket launcher than others.

Don't rate a game when you don't know if "this may or may not be a fun game". If you want "good level design, challenging gameplay, decent graphics and a smooth framerate", play the game. THEN give it your two stars if you still can't get over the fact that a company can come up with a new angle and a great plot to a worn-out genre of first-person shooters. Volition wowwed me with FreeSpace, and they've done it again with Red Faction. And much like FreeSpace, Red Faction demonstrates Volition's ability to take an old idea and make it better with improved gameplay, graphics, and storyline. That's not called a gimmick: that's called good business sense.

THIS GAME KICKS ASS!

Hell yeah! Red Faction is by far one of the best games out so far on the Playstation 2. With its great storyline, explosive action, and excelent graphic and sound effecs this game really rocks. Oh and lets not forget about the cool as hell Geo Mod technolgy. When this game was first previewed the idea of just blowing up stuff didnt sound that revolutionary, but when you actually use it you'll find its great. Cant find your way through a door? Blow up the wall next to it and go through. Trapped in a hallway? Blow up the vent in the floor and drop down to the next level. You know all those times you were playing a game and you were like man i wish i could do that?Well in this game you probably can. The coolest thing i think was when a walked into a cavern with a big tank on a bridge shooting shells at me. (And yes the shells were actually shaking the ground and destroying everything around me.) I couldnt destroy the tank from there with out getting killed, so i fired a couple rockets at the bridge, collapsing it and watching the tank fall to its destruction below. But this wouldnt matter if the story was pointless like Timesplitters was. Instead you're in the middle of a revolution on Mars against the evil Ultor mining corporation. The story progresses as the game moves on with interaction with characters and events constantly changing, kind of like a movie. My only complaint is that the characters are kind of dumb and usually get capped as soon as you meet them. But, the faction leader on the radio and all the Ultor voices over the intercom give the game a cool atmosphere. The one player game would be great on its own, but there is also a cool 2 player game. The geo mod technology really changes the way multiplayer games are played and forces you to create new strategies. Sitting in a tower with a sniper rifle won't work for long because that tower will be blown to peices in a couple minutes. Its a amazing how much of a level can be destroyed after 10 minutes of a death match. The only thing wrong is that the deathmatch levels are pretty small and a lot of times kills are based on where you're zapped into the level when you die. After you die its easy to zap back in and imediatly pick up a rocket launcher and blow away your oppenent. I think some more powerful sheilds would have helped and bigger levels would have expanded the possabilites of the great technology. But hey they had to leave something for the sequel. With a great single player game and a pretty good, intense multiplayer game Red Faction flat out rocks! Add in fully custamizable controls and this is near perfection. If you're a fan of shooter or action games at all, GET THIS GAME!

Well i've seen a number of titles for the ps2 and a few have been quite disappointing, well I'm just not into football games or snoboarding, but i thought I'd give red faction a swipe. The intro graphica for the story mode are a bit guff,I mean I reckon Squaresoft could survive independantly if they made it their business to work on all ps2 intros and cut scenes.I just cant understand how apparant production oversights like this can make it into the final product, but I digress.
Red faction from the word go is a right riveting rollercoaster ride of brain warping madness. -the training session is brilliant and the control system is pretty intuitive.Once onto the main 1 player game the learning curve is lovingly ramped,so you don't get vaporised right away, and the sheer blow-away-ability of just about everything is very cool.Little touches, like the miners cowering when you walk up to them wielding an unlikely looking piece of death dealing technology is highly amusing. All in all,a game with a very high replay value and a must for any lucky ps2 owner. In yer face Mr. x-box.teehee.

Red Faction is a first person shooter set on Mars in the not-so-distant future. I have two words for you - deformable terrain!

The game has amazing graphics, as you'd expect on a PS2, a decent soundtrack, and an involving storyline. You're in a mining colony on Mars. The colony has a mysterious plague wiping people out, and an underground movement is pointing out that the mining corporation isn't very ethical.

So you get sucked into the revolution against the company, and are being helped out by the rebels. There's really cool glass-shattering effects, submarines to ride in, Ultor Corporation baddies to blow away, and the plague to figure out. Lots of weapons and levels to plow through.

But what makes this game so much better than its HalfLife siblings is the TERRAIN. In say HalfLife or most other games of this ilk, you shoot a wall and it gets charred. You can leave bullet holes in things, or maybe shoot out the window. Red Faction brings this to an ENTIRELY new level by letting you MODIFY THE TERRAIN with your attacks.

Yes, this means if someone has locked a door you want to get through, you blast out the wall next to the door and go through the hole you've made! Know that the room below you has something special in it? Blast a hole into the floor! Trying to negotiate across a room? Be careful, because your enemies could cave the floor in beneath you!

It turns what was before a "go through this maze in THIS order" kind of game into a "you have this huge 3D space, use your brain to figure out how best to reach your objectives." It's amazing how much this expands the game!

There's a two player death match mode, and 20 levels of gameplay. Well, well worth the money - and watch for Red Faction 2 coming soon!

Great Value, Fun Shooter.

I've never really like first person shooters. This game, my first real first person shooter I ever bought and completed, was really enjoyable. For a "Greatest Hits" game, it provides good value and good fun. I appreciated it as a learning tool (yes I did it on easy), and as a game itself.

There were some problems with this game though. It tried to emulate an adventure and stealth game within a first person shooter. This was done very poorly and destroyed much of the continuity. This sometimes meant annoying backtracking, and pointless exploration. Other times, it meant that if you can't continue unless you got a certain vehicle, or hit a certain button. The stealth aspect is the worse. I felt it was clumsy and completely arbitrary when a guard saw you or not. Luckily, I downloaded a walkthrough, which reduced much of this drudgery. Also, the vehicles are clunky, boring, and take away from the flow as well.

Now to the good part. While not a huge graphical achievement, it was still very smooth, and there was no clipping, slowdown, or bad camera angles. Not stunning, but still, very polished nonetheless. The controls were a bit tough to get use to, but if you haven't engrained yourself to the PC controls, the transition is not bad at all. The auto aiming provides a bit of ease to it.

The best way to describe the feel is to think of the movie Total Recall without Arnold or the freaks. You're a revolutionary in the Mars mines, fighting your way through. You travel through mines, caves, high tech buildings, hospitals, space station, and through water. The scenery is sometimes chilling, sometimes peaceful, sometimes ruddy. It all works well with the mood of the game. The computer AI is decent (e.g. the don't run right into ambushes or get trapped in corners or behind walls), and the weapons offer a bit of variety.

There are no real levels in this game, but about 70 load points to go through. This provides a huge area to pass. Saving can be done at any place, which is a huge, huge, plus. There are only two bosses, so it's good to know it doesn't rely on the old tired gaming cliché.

Finally, it has difficulty levels. I'm new to first person shooters, so I choose easy. Maybe it was a bit hard at some points, while it was a way too easy at most other points, but it's better than being frustrated beyond belief. If you're masochistic or an expert, you can move up to a more difficult position. Either way, everyone will be satisfied.

This game also has the standard multiplayer mode. You can compete against another player, or against computer players. The levels are fun, and it's good to get way to practice or get some aggression out.

In short it's a very good game for everyone. If you want a fun small adventure, choose easy and download a walkthrough. If you want a challenge, choose the impossible level, and try to figure out those little puzzle and stealths.

Pros:
Controls are not bad.
Smooth and polished.
Great Value.
Large and varied environments.

Cons:
Pointless searching.
Vehicles clunky and forced upon.
Stealth base action clumsy, annoying.
Difficulty not spread evenly.

Time to complete: 15 hours (walkthrough and easy level).

Difficulty level: Varies from really easy to really hard.

Frustration level: Medium

Join the Red Fraction!!

Red Fraction is an execellent game! The AI is good, the graphics are top notch. The only thing wrong with this game is the guards whinning voices that repeats. "Where's my backup?!" is just one phase the guards uses.
You are Parker, a miner on Mars. You work with other miners who are mistreated by thier employer, Ultor. You see a revolt taking place after you're in the game for 30 seconds, and the fun begins!
You have friends, Eos the leader of the Red Fraction, and Hendrix. Hendrix works for Ultor, but hates the company. Hendrix gives you advice and tells you what to do if you're stuck.
You have some deadly enemies: Capek, the mad doctor that's doing experiments on the miners. Masako, leader of the mercs (she comes in near the end of the game), and of course guards.
The weapons are pretty cool. The weapon i hate is the piledriver, which is a cool gun, but takes tooooooooooooooo long to load if you're in a fight.

Big New Idea for the First Person Shooter Genre

This game is setting a new idea that really makes it worth a try. After months of this game being pushed off further and further, when it finally arrived on store shelves, I was a bit hesitant on picking it up. THQ tends to come up with a great idea and then makes a mistake in the implementation, such cases being the Game Boy Advance game GT Advance and the Playstation and Dreamcast game Evil Dead. The idea of blowing through walls with a bazooka sounded great, but it had to be seen to believed.

Overall, the game is average. The selection of weapons is interesting, and the enemies are your usual range of foot soldier to highly armored gunner. Nothing spectacular there. The level design is pretty unique, and once you get deeper into the game, gets quite varied in textures and feel.

As a savior to the game, the demolition ability is amazing. With a rocket launcher, you can punch through walls, allowing you to get to other areas or get a sneak surprise on your enemy. This is especially well done in the multiplayer levels, but in story mode, there aren't many walls you can punch a hole through, and the availability of the gun's ammo is few and far between. The other downfall to the ability to knock through a wall is that it wasn't too often that you came across a strategic time to use it. Near the beginning there is a chance to knock out a bridge so a convoy of soldiers and a tank. It looks really well done, and gets the player excited about the capabilities, and then the game goes on to deliver nothing more than blowing up guys through walls. And even that is few and far between.

Overall, the game is addictive and runs at a good and steady 60 or so frames per second, and the multiplayer mode can be quite addictive. I think with a little more thought and a better plot, a game in the future could use the Geo Mod technology to make an incredibly immersive environment that Red Faction failed to do.

One of the best fps's to ever hit a console

It looks like we've come a long way from past fps's. Red Faction is one of the reasons I am a proud owner of a Sony Playstation 2 Computer Entertainment System. Sometimes I worry "what if Sony sells out, what if Sony doesn't have the power to stand up to other Next-Gen consoles such as Microsoft's X-Box or Nintendo's Gamecube." But, it's games like these that ease my mind, Red Faction is one of the best fps's to ever hit a console, and i'm glad it decided to hit PS2. Now onto more important things.

Red Faction brings a new type of technology to the table, the title of this new found glory? - Geo-Mod technology. Basically meaning that you can go around shooting your surroundings with rocket launchers or what not, and it will do damage to the surroundings. This is a great way to keep you clinging to the edge of your seat while playing this amazing game.

At first, while starting out in the story mode, or the one player game, the graphics may not be all you were expecting from the PS2, but don't let this fool you. Red Faction has more then it's fare share of amazing grahpics, all running at a smooth frame rate. The textures are amazing!!

On to the story, you take control of Parker, the hero of the game. Red Faction takes place on mars. Your hero is one of many miners who are sick and tired of being treated like scum, and the miners feel like they should rebel from this harsh treatment. strange messages and pin-ups on the walls from a strange person named "Eos" start taking place around the facility, Eos wants to lead the revolution. Immediatly you start fighting Ultor when you enter the game. You will have to battle it out for your freedom with security guards and even aliens. The game has sort of a cinematic feel to it, you feel like you're actually Parker, and there is nothing better then feeling like you're a part of the story.

To top all these great things that come packaged with the game, the game is 1-2 players. Although, I find the 2 player split-screen battle it out mode a bit lacking. There is no doubt that it's fun, but just not what Red Faction could've been capable of. I find sometimes the frame rate slows down when too much is going on in the multi-player mode. The levels in 2 player mode aren't very large, you've basically gotta run around without stopping for a breather killing everyone in sight to take 1st place. Which isn't what it should all be about.

control.. I thought that Red Faction would be lacking without the keyboard and mouse compatibility, but i was in for a surprise, the game-play is amazing, it doesn't quite live up to the keyboard and mouse, but it's a big step for developers to be able to create smooth control on an fps that is tooken straight from the pc version. I didn't have any problems getting used to it at all.

All-in-all I give THQ's Red Faction a 5 out of 5 star rating, although a bit lacking in the multi-player mode this game still has many things to offer to make up for this. A deep story, the new Geo-Mod technology, a long lasting game, and all running at a decent frame rate. Red Faction definitly revolutionizes the fps franchise for me. So go out and get your money's worth, grab Red Faction and join the revolution.

The first item of discussion with this game is the Geo Mod technology which is facinating to anyone who has lived through the evolution of video games. This technology is best used by creative individuals who take the initiative to try it whenever they feel instead of waiting for the more obvious moments. The futuristic weapons are the best I've seen in a video game. Most futuristic weapons look cartoonish and silly. These weapons, with their secondary functions, are very interesting and fun to use. They seem like very possible creations in the near future. One part of the game that I particularly enjoyed was the ability to hide bodies of terminated guards and workers. This level of realism adds to the game's ability to capture the player in the story. The story itself is very interesting and causes almost emotional reactions to events in the game. Red Faction is also longer than other, still fun, games I have played on Playstation 2. Also, the case has a built-in memory card hoder which was incidentally a savior to me. Anyone who has lost or damaged a poorly housed memory card will appreciate this. In the end I will say that this is the best game I have seen on Playstation 2 so far and I recommend it to anyone who wants to play a very well thought out and intriguing game.
