Pong has better graphics

IF you have ever played half life don't waste your time with this game. The graphics are poor and the story line uncompelling. I can't believe people give this thing 5 stars, a 5 star game is GTA3 or Gran Turismo, this is just a shoddy excuse for a FPS. Don't waste your money on this game, thankfully it was given to me as a present so I didn't waste cash, but I wish I got knitted socks instead of this! (Sorry to be so harsh but the game is truly horrible)

.... this game looks quite good. I have been following its developments thru magazine articles. It looks as if the game is going to build off the shortcomings of past fps (first person shooters). There is a new feature called Geo-Mod technology that allows nearly every solid object in the game including wall to be shot or blown down. There are supposed to be up to 4 vehicles for you to control. There are also to be many weapons for you to use including rocket launchers, pistols, machine guns, and a gun that I think is called a rail gun. It allows you to fire a high velocity slug that will penetrate walls in a single shot. The gun also includes an inferred censor that allows you to see behind the wall. This game looks as if it will be a winner, but we tell until the game comes out on May 25.

First off...yes, it is very good! This is the best SINGLE player shoot 'em up experience on the PS2. Again, I have played only around 5 hrs. so far but it was well worth the wait. Quick, some very minor negatives before I go further on about the positives of this game. The enemies take alot of lead before they die...with my standard pistol at an average distance it takes pretty much a whole clip to kill one bad guy..around 4-5 shots, that means lots of reloading. This isn't that great of a multiplayer experience...only 2 players, no 4 player split screen...however bots are available in various numbers and difficulties. You wont play red faction multiplayer if you have either unreal, quake or timesplitters for the ps2...they are much better at this. The graphics are solid, the framerate is more than adequate, the bad guys beg you not to shoot them, then bust out a pistol and start blasting you, they also hide and run for cover behind corners and walls if under attack. As of now, this is as close to half-life for the ps2 your gonna get, in my opinion, it is a Must Have title.

I've played ever single first person shooter known to man and i can say that this game is very revolutionary. The part that facinated me the most (even more than the submarines and drill tanks) was the realistic gun fire. I was walking in a mining factory and came to a metal bridge. I looked down the side and saw I was really high. I kept walking and all the sudden I hear men voices yelling at me. Before I could take another step I saw a little spark flash infront of me and the sound of bullets whistle by. I started running to the other side of the bridge and could hear the bullets bouncing all around me, occasionally lighting the ground with a quick flash. It was like being in the middle of a 007 scene or something.

C9 Magazine Review - Red Faction

Being a big fan of FPS games, I had to check this one out. You can blow holes in the wall right? That's cool! "Can't find a key? Create your own door." That's what it says on the back of the case anyway. People, I've played this game from start to finish, there is no damn key in this game. Anyway, Red Faction takes place in a mining company on Mars. You are a miner who gets caught up in the middle of a revolution. The revolution is happening because a plague is infecting miners as well as abuse from the Ultor company guards. After killing some guards and living while other miners die Parker, that's you, comes in favor of Eos, the female leader of Red Faction. Red Faction is the faction of miners who revolt, who of course happen to where red uniforms. Through out the game you receive help from some higher up in the Ultor corporation via your radio. If you have enough patience to deal with rather hard sections in the game, you will eventually save the day.

The big feature that THQ is pushing is the fact that you can blow up walls and stuff. You can't exactly blow all of them up, which does make it seem like a rip off, but still seeing the damage you do inflict, is a really, really, nice feature. This is especially true in multi-player mode where you can blast the hell out of your opponents base, leaving them no where to hide from you Sniper Rifle or Precision rifle, or whichever of the 15 weapons you choose to use. This "Geo-Mod" feature as they call it, is hopefully just a start of better things to come in later games.

The weapons in the game are nicely done. You can utilize secondary-firing functions for many of the different weapons much like in Unreal Tournament. Throughout the game you also get the chance to use 5 different vehicles, including a Jeep, Submarine, a small flying device, and a few other vehicles. I see that this game is rated Mature for "Blood and Gore", the only thing close to "Gore" in Red Faction is hearing people get crunched when you run over them in one of the vehicles.

The graphics are also done rather well in some respects. The game control flows like Time Splitters and Quake 3. The level design is nice with a variety ranging from canyons, to office buildings, to mining facilities, and even to a space station. While there isn't anything really spectacular in these levels, they are done nicely. The character design however, is rather poor in my opinion. All the men in the game look basically the same, with only minor alterations to the face and body. This really shows in the multi-player mode. One thing I definitely didn't like about Red Faction, is that you can't sneak around at all in large open areas. Once you enter a room or area, it seems like every enemy in that area knows exactly where you are. Even if you can barely see them at the other end of a canyon, they got your [butt].

I think FPS fans will be glad to add this game to their library, at least until they can trade it in toward Soldier of Fortune. With a solid single player mode, a decent multi-player mode, and the "Geo-Mod" feature, Red Faction is by far the best First Person Shooter to come out on the PS2. Hopefully, it won't be for too much longer.

Who's sick and tired of walls being your blockade? Well, i am. I think this game next to metal gear solid sons of liberty is the best game ever. I don't care in the next 1,000 years and there is better games. This will be no matter what, the best game ever! What I'm tring to say is, you can pretty much completely destroy everything with the right weapons.

Great Game

when i bought this game i new it was going to be great! I was right. The gameplay is awsome, the graphics are sweet, and you can virtually blow up anyone or any thing in the game. this is like the james bond for PS2. if you liked james bond you will love this game. if you want to follow my adivice and get this game then get a strategy guide for it, you can easily get lost.

Wow. This was a disappointment. The game hardly takes advantage of the super-duper cool GEO-MOD technology. This is pretty much just a normal first-person shooter with a few walls you can blow up thrown in to sell the game. VERY FEW THINGS CAN BE BLOWN UP. People may say "instead of pasting a flat texture on the wall where you shot it, you will actually blow a hole in it!" This is usally false. The majority of the opportunities you have to interact with something by shooting it, the object or surface does NOT get destroyed. Rather, it just gets colored a different color. Oh, sure, there are some instances where you can tunnel through a wall with a rocket launcer, but the whole game by no means takes advantage of the opportunity. The geo-mod stuff really is just a gimmick. Don't buy the game expecting most of the time spent blowing holes in the wall. Also, the game is a bit short. I finished it within five days.

This is also very interesting: I was playing the multiplayer with a bot and I was making my own secret tunnel/cave in the rock with my rocket launcher, when all of a sudden, I couldn't make any more holes! The game, so not to take up too much RAM of the computer (PS2 in my case) actually disabled the geo-mod capability and so when I shot the rock, nothing happened! There is a limited number of times you can shoot the rock!!!! Unbelievably cheapo!

Disregard the geo mod and you still have a nice game, thus earning four stars.

Don't listen to the hype though, because the realtime destruction of the enviroment everyone's talking about plays a very small role in the whole game. I'm talking about maybe two percent of the game actually relies on geo-mod. Literally. Don't think of this as a geo-mod fest, think of it as a typical first-person shooter with a nice but underdeveloped story, corny shoddy corny horrible cut-scenes, and the opportunity to waste your ammo blowing holes in walls because *very few* walls and glass and people are the only things affected by you shooting at them.

The "acting" in the cut scenes is terrible. Really.

On one last note, the game is quite lonely, as you are often by yourself shooting at the occasional robot-like AI-controlled human-shaped boxes disguised as Ultor guards. Never do you see more four people onscreen at one time. I am serious. I am not exaggerating. The computer can't handle more than four people. And while I'm on the subject of four, when you shoot pipes and steam comes out, the most holes you can shoot is also four. Shoot a fifth hole and the first one disappears.

Controls are excellent and NEVER get in the way of the game. great controls on the ps2.

Regarding the M rating, this game really isn't too bloody. Unlike quake or soldier of fortune, people *always* stay in one piece, even when you hit them dead on with a rocket. Other than the violence of killing, *drops* of blood and some deformed (wrinkled skin and bulging body) people who do nothing but stand there, there is really nothing in this game to earn an M rating. Despite the fact that the box says blood and gore, there is no gore, as in chunks or internal organs. The worst you will find is flying blood drops and detailed blood stains on the wall (and wrinkled people).

for fifety bucks, i'd hold out for Metal Gear Solid 2, because the geo-mod certainly doesn't warrant a purchase of red faction.
