This is one of my best investments. I have been able to come back to this game time and time again and it rocks every time. Its got pretty much everything the fps fan needs, you can drive, ride, fly, swim, run, pick up any gun you see, drive anything that moves. Let me also say the mods for this game are unreal, there are many to choose from and they only amplify your gaming experience (desert combat my favorite). This is by far one of the best game EA has made. I love it and would venture to say will play it till the cd explodes.

I've been an avid multiplayer fps fan for a decade now, and have probably logged more hours playing this title than any other. In my opinion, BF1942's release was as revolutionary as that of the original Quake. The physics engine is nearly flawless, and the action is frighteningly realistic and fluid. Also, it seems to me that the WWII era weapons technology lends itself perfectly to this genre; archaic enough to be simple and tactile, while advanced enough to keep gameplay highly varied and feverishly paced.

BF: 1942 is the best online game this year.

Pros:
- The maps are well crafted and expertly balanced.
- The vehicles really make this game, light tanks, heavy tanks, dextroyers, battleships, carriers, submarines, fighter aircraft, bombers, and heavy bombers, jeeps, troop carriers, and artillery.
- AI bots in single player "instant battles" are good practice

Coms:
- Requires a FAST net connection.

Overall:
- Excelent game, I'd go so far as to call it onling game of the year, lots of replayability and it looks good.
- Will rin on an "ok" system, near perfectly at 1600x1200x16 on my 800mHz, 256 RDRAM, 128mb GeForce4 Ti 4600, and DSL.
Weak single player campaign but may be worth playing through.

Well everyone talks graphics but frankly I am not impressed with the graphical detail... Go play Unreal Tournament if you want graphics... UT2K3 has bragging rights in terms of graphical engines... This game does not. Graphics are nice but I'd like it more if the geometrical details were higher... Maybe new maps have better graphics who knows. Everyone seems to love the desert maps even tough they have no detailing and are boring as hell (maybe it's because lower end computers don't have trouble with them and everyone plays them online).

Regardless, the feel of the game is what makes it cool. The sniper rifle feels more real than the CS one for example. Not all shots are gonna score a kill simply because you had the dot on the guy. You need to have a good position (crouched for exapmle) to score kills. Also the movements are more realistic and you don't have players bunny-hopping all over the place. That's also good.

I have 2.2 Ghz 256 mb ram (I'm getting 256 more today because of this game) and ATI 9100 card. I get good FPS maxed out at 1024. If you want to buy the game first make sure you have at least 512 ram otherwise it's really not worth it...

I think this game was meant to be enjoyed on a 3.0 Ghz computer.... Maybe next year when I'll upgrade I'll write a new review.

I purchased Battlfield 1942 about a week ago, and playing it is all ive been doing since. This is one of the best games in my extensive game collections, and i can see myself popping this into my comp 4 years from now. BF 1942 is an online fps, and the game lets you pilot tanks, bombers, fighters, jeeps, ships, landing craft, and submarines through all of the very large levels. Teamwork is very important as you rush to capture flag points and hills for a strategic advantage over the enemy. You can choose to be a sniper, an assualt soldier, to have a bazooka, or be an engineer or medic. Each class backs the other up- the snipers back up the assualt soldiers and can hold certain points, the solders back up tanks against bazookas, bazookas protect soldiers against tanks, engineers can lay mines, and medics heal everyone. Then, you can have transports carrying soldiers quickly to the battlefield, and planes to protect all troops and take out enemies. The fights are adreniline packed, exiting, and as you shoot down your opponents from your positions, you feel like a real team. Your tanks are pushing forward, your planes fly overhead, and grenades, rockets, tank shot, and bullets are whizzing overhead. The pure carnage is exilerating. Here are the good and very few poor points in the game.
Pros-1) Amazing fights
2) Great vehicles to drive
3) A lot of teamwork involved
4) Large, nice looking maps
5) A great value- theres a lot of juice to soak up from this game
6) Cool weapons and classes
Cons-1) Ive heard from many people that BF doesnt play well on a less powerful machine, but my computer is pretty fast so it doesnt apply to me
2) Some bugs with sniping- ive hit people repeatedly with my sniper rifle, withour them dying.
Overall- Buy this game. It outdoes Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Day of Defeat, and Medal of Honor, all of which i have. No matter how good those three games are, BF 1942 will always be better. Buy it- trust me, you wont regret it.

Worst Game Ever- VERY Unrealistic

Imagine if you will, a sherman tank, and a tiger. Now in realistic conditions the sherman wouldn't be able to jack to the tiger, it would take more shots from a sherman, compared to the tigers 1. But no, in battlefield 1942, it takes two shots from a sherman to destroy the tiger, and two shots from the tiger to destroy the sherman. Now explain this, how can a sniper rifle, be so accurate at 1000+ yrds? Without an arc at all? Pin point accuracy. Best of all, that accuracy requires a single shot to the head for instant kill, a shot the the chest will not mark an instant kill, takes two to kill a person. Planes, oh my god. It takes over 5 clips with a colt 45 to kill a plane, doesn't matter what, everything is the same plane, tank, ship just reskinned.. Carriers are a joke. It takes 6 torpedoes to take down an enterprise class carrier. It takes over 8 bombs to sink it.. This game for those of you who are WW2 Enthusiests, WILL NOT ENJOY THIS GAME FOR IT'S REALISM. You will probbaly die laughing from the lack of realism in combat, a thompson is so accurate from distance you can use it as a sniper rifle, granted it does hardly any damage. It will still work if you nail them in the head. Just once.. this game is so horrible, I felt that I should sue EA for making such a bad game. That's just my two cents..

Game of the year??? Thouroughly disappointed!

I got this game because of all the hype. Also, this is from the singleplayer experience, and not the multiplayer.

I've played MOHAA and Ghost Recon a lot, as well as Halo on Xbox, and I thought this would be a comporable game, if not better from all the hype I heard. Its not. There isn't much to it - AI is either too stupid (you can run right past the enemy and wait, and then shoot them in the back before they even notices you're there - or you can crank it up and its too hard (being sniped by someone pretty much invisible).

Also, my biggest gripe is I don't like having a very limited amount of time to clear a level. Often when I thought "hey this game is getting fun", the level would end and its on to the next one.

They do a poor job recreating historic battles of WWII. D-Day is a joke. HOHAA is much better in that regard.

You also spend a lot of time just trying to get to and find the action. How fun is that? Walking around until a sniper kills you. Then, you always have to click a new spawn point - that gets tiresome fast, and you always have to wait between 10 and 20 seconds before you spawn.

Also, sometimes the AI grabs the coolest weapons before you get a chance and you're left walking. Things like the boats are sometimes impossible to figure out how to get out of when you're by yourself. Which reminds me, its unrealistic how alone you often are in this game - just you and the enemy it seems - not realistic at all.

Other vehicles are nearly impossible to fly and attack with, like the planes. The maps are also so small you fly out of them in a few seconds. Not fun. I gave up on flying the planes several times.

The Battleships are also almost always useless as well, as you can't see the shore or other ships you're shelling.

This game says its both single player and multiplayer, but its obviously built for multiplayer first, and the singleplayer parts were obviously designed as an afterthought. I feel I was mislead about this game, wish I could get my money back and buy Half Life or Splinter Cell - or I'm hoping the PC Halo or Half Life 2 is cool.

For multiplayer, you'd better have a fast machine and broadband, otherwise forget it.

Being able to control different vehicles is fun, especially the tanks, but game of the year? I think not. I feel ripped off. If you gave this game 4 stars you've probably never played Halo or MOHAA. Sorry, but I just don't get it.

Good Idea, Bad Implementation

When I first heard of this game I was impressed, a good idea. The ability to choose what ever vehicle you wanted, land sea and air etc. I was immediately fronted with long loading times. I decided to try the single player first and it was extremely slow and choppy game play so I tried out the multiplayer which where even longer loading times. I stuck with this game for a good several days thinking I could get used to its flaws but I just couldn't get past the buggy and choppy gameplay.

The graphics are nothing to cheer about below Medal of Honor and Soldier of Fourtune II.

The sound was ok.

All in all not worth the money. Even with my system specs you still have to turn down the graphics to medium and even low to have decent gameplay and I can run Medal of Honor and SOF2 with high graphics on multiplayer and have it run smooth.

System specs:

Windows XP Pro
DSL
Pentium 4 2.0 gHz
256 DDR Ram
GeForce 3 Ti200 128mb ram
Sound Blaster 5.1

Okay, let me first start by saying that I have not played the multi-player portion so this review is on only the single player game. The game is marginal. I finished the campaign in four hours on the normal setting. The load times for the missions are long (about 1 min for each). So, if you wish to stop the mission and restart, it takes a long time. Your computer-controlled buddies on your side are useless as sometimes they run right past enemy players without engaging them. They will stand right next to an enemy base with no enemy nearby and fail to capture it for your side, even when you command them to do so. I found the aircraft almost impossible to control and use effectively. I never even saw a submarine.
The game does have some fun points. I did enjoy the music and the graphics. When you turn up the game to the hard or impossible settings, it is truly challenging. I think that this game could have been much more intriguing with a few small changes in game play. After a week of play, this game is ready to join the stack of old games that are awaiting their fate beside my desk.
