Simply Bad..., A true Gamer's wet dream

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 5
Date: March 29, 2003

Ok this game is simply awesome, it has tremendous freedom and variety yet it doesn't take a month to get used to the game, something that can appeal to people. It has standard FPS gameplay and control so if you've done a fair amount of gaming it comes absolutely natural (CS, NS, even Duke w00t). The animations and detail are outstanding if you've got the hardware to support it, which is a prob if you don't, but that's just the price of intensive gaming. Some have said the game should run smoothly on a less-than-par video card (GF2 MX isn't exactly top-of-the-line) and to get great graphics you need a video card that can pull some weight. Now if you're wondering if your system will run it good enough all I can say is I've got an XP 2100+, 512 MB PC2700, ATI Radeon 9500 Pro OC'ed to 9700 specs and it runs like a dream.

It is also a problem if you have dialup, pretty much impossible to play online, so broadband is a must...but that also means IF you have broadband, you almost can't get a bad ping'ed server because everybody playing online has cable/dsl/adsl.

There are something like thirty five vehicles and four different classes which allow amazingly varied gameplay and none of the classes are weighted above the others, even though the assualt soldier seems to be a stronger character. Now that the Road to Rome expansion is available, it's almost a must to get the full perspective of the game as well. Also there are two add-on maps called Aberdeen and Coral Sea; a massive North African tank battle and massive Pacific Fleet air-battle, respectively.

With arguably the very best physics engine and very lucrative graphics engine out right now, it's no surprise it was PCGamer's Game of the Year and Multiplayer Game of the Year, it absolutely rocks, and people I know who have played Medal of Honor prefer Battlefield 1942. If you don't own it go buy it or pirate it, oops, I mean go buy it :). One way or the other, GET THIS GAME!

Good...but no missions really

This game is for people who just want an arena to fight in. The game contains no real mission and therefore no scripting. The absence of scripting can be good because it basically deletes predictability. I, for one like having a mission. I know I gave it 4 stars... but it's closer to a 3.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

I bought this game some days ago because no one would shut up about it in school. Everything went fine: The installation, the video options, no problems of any kind.

Until I tried to play multiplayer. The first time I got an "invalid version" problem. I tried everything but I couldn't get it to work.

I pressed the "Update" button on the autorun menu but it took me to the EA main site. I don't know how to procced from there. There are way too many "Pay money" "Register" "Download demo of other games" ads that I got lost. There is not even a "Downloads" section.

There are no phone numbers or email adresses on the manual or CD case. The single player mode of Battlefield 1942 is a complete joke so the game could only decorate my desk.

You know what I did? I traded it for Heroes III (A game older than me! No one else wanted this game, probably for the same problems I had) in school some hours ago. And you know what, I didn't need to press an update button or even got to websites to play it, and what's more important, the single player was fun!

Excellent

In a tide of WW2 based games, this one stands above all others. The one difference: you can fight as the Axis, which makes it a more flexible game than others.

Graphics are good, sound is excellent, controls are extremely simple and easy to learn, and gameplay is second to none. Best computer game in a long time.

This is the most fun I've had wasting time in years!

After playing an accumulated 100 or so hours of this (and that's an understatement) I think I can honestly say this is the best multiplayer game of all time. There aren't many cheats for jerks to use, so the gameplay isn't spoiled like you may find playing half-life or Medal of Honor. Plus with the new patch (v.1.3) that is now out they have an "auto-punish" system which keeps team killers out of the game.
I know some people complain about the system requirements, but for those of us priviledged enough to have an awesome computer...the graphics certainly give EA bragging rights. To wrap up this review I will summerize the game's key points.
A. BUY THIS GAME
B. BUY THIS GAME
C. READ A AND B AGAIN
D. IF you want good grades in school, dont buy this game for your mind will be engrossed for hours on end.

This game rocks

This game is fantastic. You get to play in every imaginable WWII vehicle and then some. The views are excellent and changable. There are a number of character types a person can play with a multitude of their own weapons and abilities. This game is great and the expansions just keep on coming. Download the free Desert Combat...Helicopters are a blast.

The graphics of the game can be changed to both your computer's ability and your satisfaction. This game is the greatest war game out there for first shooters. Buy and enjoy the endless action.

Best online wargame FPS ive ever played

This is what we all hoped operation flashpoint would be like. This is what we all thought medal of honor would be like. It is the by far the greatest FPS based on WW2 ever created. It has a perfect balance between what real war is like and what play war is like, and a perfect balance between the allies and the axis.

You can do anything in this game. Play a frontline soldier, an anti tank, a medic, a scout/sniper, or an engineer. You can also man stationary MGs, flak turrets, and shore batteries. And ofcourse you can drive tanks, jeeps, APCs, divers, bombers, fighters, battleships and submarines. Its all in this game and perfectly blended to make the best wargame ever.

The graphics arnt state of the art but they're good and if your really big on graphics you'll find that the gameplay makes up for it. The only bad things ide have to say about the game are that there are a few bugs which all games do when they're first released and the AI glitches which dont really matter because the real game is online.

I would recommend this game to everyone that enjoys all forms of FPS's and definetly to those you like warfare games espicially WW2. If you like games like Medal of Honor this just might not be the game for you because its alot more intense and sophisticated. This concludes my review, if you dont believe me....

So many ways to play

Watch out... this one will absorb all your free time and then some. Great 3D engine. You can set how much CPU the AI will take. Don't set it too high or you can't move before you get killed. Great range of difficulty. You can set how many opponents are out there as well as how many friendly units. Several different maps. Each map you have to play differently. It is fun learning how to play each map. You can ride in a tank, shoot from a battleship, fly a fighter plane or be any of four different positions in a bomber. (Not to mention sitting on top of a hill as a sniper. :) Very fun game. Played on AMD AthlonXP 1800 with 1 gig RAM and GForce 4 video card. Multiplayer using 1/2 T1. (Ok, so... I am spoiled)

Excellent online WWII battles.2 teams combat up to 64 players at one time,(32vs32)In this game there are tons of armor to choose from. You will be able to fly airplanes, helicopters,Drive tanks, missle lauching armored vehicles. And much more.I guess everyone knows a little something about the battlefield series.I think that this game is great not only because it is a nice, fun game to play, but you do not not a $400.00 video card and the newest, fastest computer on the market in order to play. The graphics are pretty good when you first install the game. But if you download the free mod (DesertCombat)The graphics improve and the game is very similiar to battlefield 2.

Buyer Bewar

First of all. READ THE REQUIREMENTS! This game takes more than a store bought "I just paid 2k computer and it should run anything" type of computer. This game stretches the limits of what games can do now. You NEED a very good video card, and at least 512 ram just to play this game decently. Most store bought computers barely come with a 32ram chip and it takes about a 128 to play the game well. Also, you need a DSL, cable, satellite type internet connection to play online, dial up will not do.

Aside from that, this game is incredible. The team strategies involved makes this so worth it. This isn't your typical 1st person shooter where you can run through a mob gunning everyone in their path. I love getting drilled by a sniper from 100 yards away while crawling on the ground, makes it more realstic than any shooter game I've ever played.
I highly recommend this game to those people with soupped up computers or a store bought Alienware. The rest of you...too bad.
