Best WW2 Game Ever

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2
Date: May 23, 2005
Author: Amazon User

This is easily my favorite WW2 Game ever made.

I haven't even played online play yet, but I already like this game.

Whoever said they rather play Medal of Honor over a Single-Player game of this really has low standards. I'd rather play against an unpredictable army rather than the highly-predictable opponent in Medal of Honor. You can play Medal of Honor a hundred times, and the enemy AI will always be in the same spot. At least in a single player game of Battlefield 1942, the enemy opposition is constantly on the move. And no, the enemy is not lousy. I've played human opponents at Goldeneye who are 10x's worse than the AI opponents in Battlefield.

The only bad thing about this game is this: I just bought a brand new computer a few weeks ago, and I still can't run this game the way it was designed to be played. I have to limit the amount of bots, and I have tweak visibility (among a few other things) in order to run this game smoothly.

Also, when I bought the Anthology pack for Battlefield 1942, the packaging was incredibly pathetic. Why did the packagers not put these CDs into CD cases? Because of the crappy packaging, I've already scratched the back of Disc 1.

Anyways, I'd easily recommend this game to anyone who enjoys WW2-themed games. Yes, even if you don't play online, get this old game before it disapears from shelves.

Need plenty of ram

It's a great game, but you do need at least 512m ram. Even a 2g proccessor with only 256m won't cut it.

Fun Game, but RIDDLED with technical (and other) problems

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 3 / 5

The game designers did a good job creating a fun game, but a HUGE number of technical issues make this game overly fustrating.
My BIGGEST gripe is the copy protection. In a BRILLIANT move that transfers the burden of piracy from the software company to the end user, EA uses a network key in addition to needing the original CD. I can't tell you how infuriating it is to try to jump into a game only to be kicked off by the message "CD KEY IN USE". Some pirate out there gets to play while I, who paid for the game, suffer the consequences. Brilliant EA- just simply brilliant.
BF1942 (currently version 1.31) is full of bugs. It will play for about 5 minutes and crash on me two or three times, with no error message, before I can get through a whole game. One of the included maps crashes on me constantly- I have never been able to complete it. EA tech support is not much help either. They suggest running BF1942 from a clean boot without running anything else before. This does help. If I run another game, McAfee, Outlook, or Internet Explorer, before BF1942, BF1942 will crash constantly until I reboot.
The menu system is horrid. The server browser has very little filtering, no favorites, and is locked to 640x480. Some of the in-game player-player options are even worse. If you want to add a player to your buddy list, you have to open a text console, type game.listPlayers, scroll to find the player ID number that matches your friend's name, then type game.addPlayerToBuddyList #. Then, the the server loads a new map, you have to do the whole thing over again. The voting interface is the same way.
When everything is working perfectly, it is a fun game, but you'll need a beefy CPU, GF4 or newer gfx card, broadband, and find a server with pleanty of bandwidth (It's fairly common to see players jumping around from lag). BF is definately a resource hog.

good game, but laggy

My computer meets AND exceeds the system requirements for the game, yet, it is laggy. I play on fast servers (GameSpy Arena) and yet, it's slow. I exit almost every other application running before I run the game, and it lags.

A midget compared to other games

No doubt, the game is indeed fun. With 16 different maps and 4 different nations, the game can be played over and over again with the same satisfaction. One problem, there is no story to this game.
The objective is not to infiltrate an enemy building or sabotage a base, but only to shoot and kill, shoot and kill. The game is just too simple.
In games like Medal of Honor, you actually had to use your head. It was almost like a puzzle, with hidden areas all over the place. This is where creativity comes in. As for Battlefield 1942, all you do is run around the map and shoot soldiers.
Also, I think the intensity of the game is just below average. Why is this so? The number of soldiers participating is too small. At one point of the game, I discovered that there were only two other men on my side fighting along me! In the Omaha level, I easily dodged the German bullets even though the ratio between enemy soldiers and friendly ones was on "Impossible" level. Come on, where's the excitement? In MOHAA, you had bullets flying all over the place with endless numbers of Americans falling around you. You actually had to use the obstacles as protection.
The game just could have been better. In the Stalingrad map, it would have been more interesting if the Russians actually had to cross the Volga in boats with German planes flying above. In Iwo Jima, there could have been caves and underground tunnels.
To sum it up, I think the game needs more creativity. More soldiers should participate in the Single Player Missions. 10 or 15 soldiers on each side may seem interesting and fun, but when you realize the size of the map, it's sometimes really difficult to find the enemy, especially in some of the desert maps. Also, I would appreciate it more if the AI would use the planes more.
But do you know what frustrates me the most? Where in the world is that ...submarine?

Bury me with this game...........

First of all, I am not a glutton for first person shooters, team based or otherwise. I played Return to Castle Wolfenstein's Multiplay for a few months last year, but eventually it became redundant and I moved on to other games such as Freedom Force, Neverwinter Nights, and GTA III. The Team Based shooter genre needed a game of this caliber in order to pull me back in, and let me tell you, hands down this is THE best Game, shooter, RPG or otherwise that i've played in awhile. I have seen some reviews blasting this game due to compatability issues, but I had no problems on both systems I own, one running WIn 98 SE and the other running Win XP.
BF 1942 offers a single player mode(which I've pretty much ignored) but the multi play is the real kicker here. Be sure you have a Broadband or DSL connection, as it is required to play. And play you will. This game offers 16 multiplayer maps, each one recreating a classic WWII battle that places you in the middle of the conflict as one of five somewhat typical, but thoroughly enjoyable character classes. There are modes of play such as CTF, Head to Head, Team Deathmatch, etc. but the most fun is the assault mode, which is similar to Unreal Tourament's domination mode(teams battle for control of several flags placed throughout a map). There are over 35 vehicles at you disposal, ranging from Naval Battle ships, to Sherman Tanks, to Planes, to artillery, and so on. Piloting each vehicle requires a little bit of practice, but becomes second nature after awhile as the controls aren't extrememly daunting, and it is ALWAYS fun. The developers made sure that nothing is too complicated and have thus engineered a sublte learning curve to the game. The physics are very different than most shooters because gravity actually plays a part in everything you do. Bullets, Bazooka shots, tank shells and artillery fire descend in an arc the further out they travel, so no more 'line it up in the crosshairs and blast 'em' action. This makes it very satisfying when you do score a kill, as it requires a little more skill than in most other games. I could gush on and on, but i will let you, the faithful buyer, discover the rest for yourself.

Good Game

This game is a very fun game. It combines strategy and fps to some extent. You replay many of the great battles from world war 2 such as battle of the bulge and midway.

The only reason that this game does not get 5 stars is because of the incredible bulk of the game. I'm running a 2.26 p4 with 512 ram and 128 radeon and the game takes a good 2-3 minutes to load on my system. It is the biggest pig of a game that I have ever played, and consequently because of this fact, I am playing it less.

But once you do get it up and running, its a blast.

Finally a WWII online

The dream game has come. Battlefield 1942, a WWII game playable rather online or single player. And it's better than that other junk: BAM BAM - uh oh my life is halfway down. This is actually REAL, 1 to 3 normal shots from maybe a pistol will kill you. Besides the pistols, there are possibly any war weapon or vehicle you can think of. Let's take a look.

*GRAPHICS*

Outstanding. 8/10 maybe? Really good grpahics that make the game look absolutley real.

*SOUND*

The guns firing and walking and everything else gives me one word to say: REAL

*GAMEPLAY*

This is the best part...you can snipe people or run and kill them. (hmm, I want to blow up this guy....BOOM!! muahaha you dead)

Great game

This game is amazing!!! I have noticed people complaining that this game slows down your PC especially if you have Windows XP.
Not true at all. I have WinXP and I have not experienced any problems whatsoever. Perhaps if you have old computer that doesn't support newer games that need to meet specific requirements, but if you have newer computer you should be fine.
I have P4 at 3.06 Ghz with a 120 Gb hard drive and 1 GB of memory and the game is running SMOOTH.
This game is so realistic. It includes all the major battles of WW II. You can use all the military equipment from the Tiger, Panzer tanks through Messerschmits and the Junkers bombers to BMW motorcycles and VW Kubelwagens. You can also sit and operate the anti aircraft guns.
But the best thing about this game is that you can choose which side to play on. You can play as the Allied forces, but that's boring. I like playing as the Nazis. It was so sweet blowing up American, British and Russian tanks.
But anyways, this game is great and it is worth the money.
I give it a 5 star rating.

A good premise, bad execution

I will only give you the negative comments in this review. In Multiplayer, whether you join an FF server, you will be surrounded by people who have no clue how to do anything and of course the few TK'ers that ruin the fun. Lag is horrible, even with a ping of 35ms you would warp around frequently, and once you climb down a ladder on a moving ship you have a 1 out of 5 chance of warping out of the ship in to the ocean. Lag is horrible, I must stress this. Also, the weapons are uneven among different classes, and the poor accuracy combined with lag causes people to run around in circles shooting and reloading most of the time.

This could all be fixed by some updates, but as of now those are the main problems in multi-player.
